Research And Development Of A Weighted Most Recent Common Ancester Algorithm For Metagenomic Taxonomic Assignment, Hellen Butungi
Research And Development Of A Weighted Most Recent Common Ancester Algorithm For Metagenomic Taxonomic Assignment, Hellen Butungi
All Master’s Theses
The new generation of metagenomics has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. This has been majorly due to rapid advances in DNA sequencing technology, which has produced large amounts of sequence data in relatively shorter times, compared to conventional DNA sequencing methods. There is a need to taxonomically characterise these data by assigning individual sequence reads to their constituent taxa. However, there is lack of up-to-date and customized software tools to accomplish this task, and for taxonomic characterisation, an automated taxonomic classification scheme is necessary. The overall objective of this study was to improve the accuracy of the most recent …

Cloning Of The Gene, Purification As Recombinant Protein And Functional Characterization Of Leishmania Mexicana Cytochrome B5 Reductase, Ala Azhari
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Leishmania are protozoan parasites that are transmitted by a sand fly vector. These parasites affect not only humans but also wild animals including domestic dogs and rodents, which form an additional challenge and public health problem to control the disease. Leishmaniasis is an important disease with worldwide distribution, including Saudi Arabia, the Middle East, and other tropical and subtropical areas around the world. Due to the expansion of irrigation and agricultural activities, more exposure to sand fly occurs, which leads to the expansion of leishmaniasis infections as newly emerging disease.
Emerging drug resistance in leishmaniasis is an additional problem, contributed …
Bayesian Inference On Mixed-Effects Models With Skewed Distributions For Hiv Longitudinal Data, Ren Chen
Bayesian Inference On Mixed-Effects Models With Skewed Distributions For Hiv Longitudinal Data, Ren Chen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Statistical models have greatly improved our understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection
and guided for the treatment of AIDS patients and evaluation of antiretroviral (ARV) therapies.
Although various statistical modeling and analysis methods have been applied for estimating the
parameters of HIV dynamics via mixed-effects models, a common assumption of distribution is
normal for random errors and random-effects. This assumption may lack the robustness against
departures from normality so may lead misleading or biased inference. Moreover, some covariates
such as CD4 cell count may be often measured with substantial errors. Bivariate clustered
(correlated) data are also commonly encountered in …

Perceived Stress And The Buffering Hypothesis Of Perceived Social Support On Facebook, John G. Lynch
Perceived Stress And The Buffering Hypothesis Of Perceived Social Support On Facebook, John G. Lynch
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Online social networking sites have experienced a surge in popularity since their inception. Serving as a hub for communities of all ages, Web sites such as MySpace, Friendster and Facebook bridge geographic and time limitations and offer their members the opportunity to connect with anyone on the Internet at any time. The growing accessibility of technology for computer-mediated communication, outside of such Web sites offers similar opportunities. Although critics share concern over potential for the loss of intimacy, the possibility for increased levels of perceived social support through limitless networking options should not be overlooked. When we consider the strong …

On The Global Stability Of A Generalized Cholera Epidemiological Model, Yuanji Cheng, Jin Wang, Xiuxiang Yang
On The Global Stability Of A Generalized Cholera Epidemiological Model, Yuanji Cheng, Jin Wang, Xiuxiang Yang
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we conduct a careful global stability analysis for a generalized cholera epidemiological model originally proposed in [J. Wang and S. Liao, A generalized cholera model and epidemic/endemic analysis, J. Biol. Dyn. 6 (2012), pp. 568-589]. Cholera is a water-and food-borne infectious disease whose dynamics are complicated by the multiple interactions between the human host, the pathogen, and the environment. Using the geometric approach, we rigorously prove the endemic global stability for the cholera model in three-dimensional (when the pathogen component is a scalar) and four-dimensional (when the pathogen component is a vector) systems. This work unifies the …
Hospital As A Critical Infrastructure In The Community Disaster Response System, Yixuan Li
Hospital As A Critical Infrastructure In The Community Disaster Response System, Yixuan Li
Theses
The Department of Homeland Security lists 19 groups of sectors as Critical Infrastructure Key Resources (CIKR) such as Water, Emergency Services, and Healthcare and Public Health (HPH). Protection of those interdependent sectors is of vital interest for the country in the event of disaster. Hospital infrastructure systems are basic HPH elements of the CIKR. Local hospitals deliver essential routine healthcare services as well as serving as frontline responders during non-routine disaster events. Currently, hospitals generally extend their routine healthcare activities for external community disaster preparedness and response services. This extension takes the form of coordination with other responders within the …

3-Fluoro-4-(morpholin-4-yl)aniline (2), prepared from 3,4-difluoronitrobenzene, was converted to the corresponding Schiff base (3) by treatment with indol-3-carbaldehyde. The treatment of thiourea 4 and carbothioamide derivatives 9 with ethyl bromoacetate or 4-substituted phenacyl bromides generated the corresponding thiazolidinone (5 and 13) and thiazoline (6 and 12) derivatives, respectively. The acidic or basic treatment of carbothioamide 9 produced 1,3,4-thiadiazole (11) or 1,2,4-triazole (10) compounds, respectively. The structural assignments of the new compounds were based on elemental analysis and spectral (IR, ^1H-NMR, ^{13}C-NMR, and LC-MS) data. The antimicrobial activity study revealed that all compounds showed good antitubercular activities.

Crisis Response Information Networks, Shan L. Pan, Gary Pan, Dorothy Leidner
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
In the past two decades, organizational scholars have focused significant attention on how organizations manage crises. While most of these studies concentrate on crisis prevention, there is a growing emphasis on crisis response. Because information that is critical to crisis response may become outdated as crisis conditions change, crisis response research recognizes that the management of information flows and networks is critical to crisis response. Yet despite its importance, little is known about the various types of crisis information networks and the role of IT in enabling these information networks. Employing concepts from information flow and social network theories, this …

Diarrhea can be caused by a range of pathogens, including several bacteria. Conventional diagnostic methods, such as culture, biochemical tests, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), are laborious. We developed a 7-plex PCR-Luminex assay to simultaneously screen for several of the major diarrhea-causing bacteria directly in fecal specimens, including pathogenic Aeromonas, Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Salmonella, Shigella, enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC), Vibrio, and Yersinia. We included an extrinsic control to verify extraction and amplification. The assay was first validated with reference strains or isolates and exhibited a limit of detection of 10(3) to 10(5) CFU/g of stool for each pathogen as …
