Theravada Buddhism And Political Engagement Among The Thai-Lao Of North East Thailand: The Bun Phra Wet Ceremony, Sandra Cate
Theravada Buddhism And Political Engagement Among The Thai-Lao Of North East Thailand: The Bun Phra Wet Ceremony, Sandra Cate
Faculty Publications, Anthropology
The Thai-Lao of North East Thailand (Isan), the major ethnic group in a core area of the Red Shirt movement, have long expressed concern with the well-being of the muang – now nation-state – in which they reside. This paper explores the proposition that the moral foundations for continuing political engagement at the muang level are explicitly stated in the annual Theravada Buddhist festival, the Bun Phra Wet, celebrated in almost every Thai-Lao village. Moreover, these concerns also involve appropriate actions by the people to correct the systems in which they live.
Is It Time To Forget Science? Reflections On Singular Science And Its History, Jan V. Golinski
Is It Time To Forget Science? Reflections On Singular Science And Its History, Jan V. Golinski
History
The name history of science refl ects a set of assumptions about what science is. Among them is the claim that science is a singular thing, a potentially unifi ed group of disciplines that share a common identity. Long promoted by scientists and philosophers on the basis of a supposedly universal scientifi c method, this claim now looks very embattled. I trace its development from the early nineteenth century and the growth of the positivist movement to its various manifestations in the twentieth century. Recently, some historians have called for the term science to be relinquished, and for adoption of …

Marine Insurance And Mercantile Enterprise Through The Lens Of The Baltimore Insurance Company V. Mcfadon 4 H.& J. 31 (1815), Catherine Gonzalez
Legal History Publications
This essay contextualizes the case of The Baltimore Insurance Company v. McFadon, tracing the dispute from its origin to its disposition in the Maryland Court of Appeals in 1815. The case, which centered on whether mutual claims could be set-off against each other in a suit involving an open insurance policy, is illuminating as to the evolution of marine insurance, trade between Baltimore and the West Indies in the late eighteenth century, and the impact of the Napoleonic Wars on American mercantile enterprise. By examining the case through the lens of this historical study, it becomes apparent that the …
“The Abomination Of Mankind”: Anti-Chinese Sentiment And The Borders Of Belonging In San Francisco’S Chinatown, Rachel G. Shuen
“The Abomination Of Mankind”: Anti-Chinese Sentiment And The Borders Of Belonging In San Francisco’S Chinatown, Rachel G. Shuen
Honors Thesis Collection
My project builds upon historical studies about anti-Chinese racism and exclusion by addressing the creation of a problematic police force, the Chinatown Squad, which marked a racialized people and neighborhood for surveillance and discipline. The inauguration of the Chinatown Squad reflected important shifts in the policies of the municipal government and the San Francisco Police Department. Examining the expansion of the police force in the name of public safety alongside the municipally-directed policing of a racialized neighborhood will complicate our historical understanding of anti-Chinese rhetoric and violence.

Picturing The Wake: Arcimboldo, Joyce And His ‘Monster,’, Václav Paris
Publications and Research
This essay considers Finnegans Wake through the lens of Arcimboldo's art. Drawing on surrealism, French theory, and close readings of parts of Joyce's most difficult book, it shows the work to be visually richer and stranger than we imagined.

Power System Load Modeling Using A Weighted Optimal Linear Associative Memory (Olam), Morlue Samukai Eesiah
Power System Load Modeling Using A Weighted Optimal Linear Associative Memory (Olam), Morlue Samukai Eesiah
Theses
Power system load models are very powerful tools, which have a wide range of applications in the electric power industry. These uses include scheduling system maintenance, monitoring load management policies, helping with the generator commitment problem by providing short-term forecasts, and aiding system planning [4]. Further, Power System Load Modeling is a technique used to model a power system and other essentials for the assessment of stability. In today's datacenters, power consumption is a major issue. Storage usually typically comprises a large percentage of a datacenter's power. Therefore, without mentioning that managing, understanding, and reducing storage, power consumption is an …
A Social Literary Study Of Hebrew Esther: Characterizations As A Narrative Construct For Discussing Diasporic Identity, Sara Vulgan
Seminary Masters Theses
This study is a preliminary attempt to ascertain insights into diasporic Persian/Second-Temple period ideas concerning Jewish identity. Through the book of Esther this study utilizes the methodological tool of literary characterizations as a means for gaining insight into the narrator's conceptual framework. The first section highlights some of the important recent Esther studies, along with studies concerned with sociological questions and the Hebrew bible. Section two presents a broad discussion of the sociological and literary concerns for this study. The third section presents a study on the characterizations of the story's co-protagonists, Esther and Mordecai. Two aspects of characterization, the …
An Important Year: Competing Images Of Womanhood In The Ladies’ Home Journal, 1919, Eva Krupitsky
An Important Year: Competing Images Of Womanhood In The Ladies’ Home Journal, 1919, Eva Krupitsky
American Studies Senior Theses
This thesis explores the two main images of womanhood found in the editorial and advertising contents of the Ladies’ Home Journal, a popular mass-market magazine from the early 20th century. My specific focus is on the year 1919 because several important events that affected American women were prevalent during this time. I place my research about the two images of womanhood in the magazine within the context of WWI’s end and the proximity of women to reaching voting rights. This is a transitional year during which both historical happenings can be discerned by looking “in between the lines” of …

Roots Of Farm And Family, Carol Gjenvick
Roots Of Farm And Family, Carol Gjenvick
Graduate Student Independent Studies
The current food industry is a vast and confusing system that often generates contradicting information, new jargon and trends on how and what to eat. Most families in urban and suburban regions shop at local grocery stores, supermarkets or chains and are far removed from the origins of their food supply. Even with the growing support of farmers markets and local farmers, the average person no longer has access to an actual farm. Children in particular, are less likely to understand how a farm operates, the essential role of the farmer, the impact of seasonal changes on food supplies and …

Mediating Disconnected Communities With A Liberal Arts Education, Jennifer Redmond
Kristi Schultz Broughton Liberal Arts Essay Contest
2012 Topic: Mediating the Disconnect: Liberal Arts as Inspiration for Activism
Virtually all news and media outlets frequently and urgently remind us that we are at a historic crossroads and that local and global societies and economies are facing extraordinary if not totally unprecedented challenges. Yet many of us tend to feel disconnected from these challenges, watching them as if they were a show that we are free to observe or ignore or as a set of problems others are responsible for solving, preferably without our involvement. In what ways has your experience at Butler moved you to and prepared …

Baloney Or Braunschweiger?: Communicating Cultural Identity In Multigenerational German Immigrant Families, Dena Huisman, Heike Flood
Baloney Or Braunschweiger?: Communicating Cultural Identity In Multigenerational German Immigrant Families, Dena Huisman, Heike Flood
Iowa Journal of Communication
Researchers have examined economic, social, political, and historical implications of immigration throughout U.S. history, but little research has been conducted on everyday communication and the lived experience of immigrant family life in the United States. The current research explores family communication in mid-20th century German immigrant families and their balance between two cultures, demonstrating the complex cultural boundaries between family generations and between families and cultural boundaries themselves.
Old Du Pont Company's Accounting System Lasting A Hundred Years: An Overlooked Accounting System, Daijiro Fujimura
Old Du Pont Company's Accounting System Lasting A Hundred Years: An Overlooked Accounting System, Daijiro Fujimura
Accounting Historians Journal
Accounting historians have not yet realized that there existed another complete accounting system before the formation of the modern accounting system of today which Johnson and Kaplan's Relevance Lost characterizes by the integration of cost and financial accounts supported by inventory costing. In that earlier accounting system, cost and profit calculations were made in a past particular ledger account or accounts, namely trading account(s), where accounting practices opposed to inventory costing and integration were used. The historical existence of that accounting system is overlooked by accounting historians. The example of the old Du Pont Company (DPC) this paper presents will …

Visualizations And Intuitive Reasoning In Mathematics, Kajsa Bråting
The Mathematics Enthusiast
On the basis of historical and didactical examples we consider the role of visualizations and intuitive thinking in mathematics. Examples from the 17th and 19th century have been used as well as smaller empirical studies at upper secondary school level and university level. We emphasize that a mathematical visualization does not reveal its intended meaning. With experience we can learn to interpret the visualization in different ways, depending on what is asked for.
If There's No "Fat Lady," When Is The Opera Over? An Exploration Of Changing Physical Image Standards In Present-Day Opera, Emily L. Stephenson
If There's No "Fat Lady," When Is The Opera Over? An Exploration Of Changing Physical Image Standards In Present-Day Opera, Emily L. Stephenson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Though present-day American society generally assumes opera is one of the few remaining entertainment fields where talent matters more than physical appearance, as the 2004 firing of Deborah Voigt demonstrates, present-day opera singers are increasingly being held to stricter image standards. In 2004, Covent Garden dismissed Voigt from their production of Ariadne auf Naxos, in which Voigt was supposed to reprise her critically acclaimed interpretation of the title role. According to Voigt, Covent Garden's casting director Peter Katona felt that she was too large to fit into the black dress the new production required of the character. Voigt's removal …

The Role Of Apologetics In Mormon Studies, Daniel C. Peterson
The Role Of Apologetics In Mormon Studies, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
T he following essay was presented on 3 August 2012 as “Of ‘Mormon Studies’ and Apologetics” at the conclusion of the an nual conference of the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR) in Sandy, Utah. It represents the first pub lic announcement and appearance of Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture, which had been founded only slightly more than a week earlier, on 26 July. In my view, that rapid launch was the near-miraculous product of selfless collaboration and devotion to a cause on the part of several people—notable among them David E. Bokovoy, Alison V. P. Coutts, William …

An Hsi Report: Industrial Farm Animal Production And Livestock Associated Mrsa (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), Humane Society International
HSI REPORTS
Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of bacterial infection and is increasingly found to be resistant to antibiotic therapy. A newly described type of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus carried by farm animals, Livestock Associated MRSA (LA-MRSA), is now causing infections in humans with and without direct livestock contact. A reduction in the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in feed would likely reduce the capacity of industrial animal agriculture to continue to create, disseminate, and perpetuate a large reservoir of LA-MRSA on a global scale, but more fundamental changes in the way animals are raised for food may be necessary forestall a …
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
During Reconstruction a movement gained momentum to educate the newly freed slaves in the South. Historians have agreed that the impetus for that movement came from the freedmen, as they came to be called, as well as northern missionary societies and religious aid associations. In South Carolina that impetus started in the Sea Islands around Charleston. Many historians have studied what is known as the Port Royal Experiment and the educational programs in Columbia and Orangeburg, particularly as they pertain to the higher education institutions for African Americans that arose from these efforts. But no one has specifically studied what …
