Changing Language, Remaining Pygmy, Serge Bahuchet Feb 2012

Changing Language, Remaining Pygmy, Serge Bahuchet

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

In this article I am illustrating the linguistic diversity of African Pygmy populations in order to better address their anthropological diversity and history. I am also introducing a new method, based on the analysis of specialized vocabulary, to reconstruct the substratum of some languages they speak. I show that Pygmy identity is not based on their languages, which have often been borrowed from neighboring non-Pygmy farmer communities with whom each Pygmy group is linked. Understanding the nature of this partnership, quite variable in history, is essential to address Pygmy languages, identity and history. Finally, I show that only a multidisciplinary …

Pilgrims Of Beauty: Art And Inspiration In 19th Century Italy, Crawford Alexander Mann Iii Feb 2012

Pilgrims Of Beauty: Art And Inspiration In 19th Century Italy, Crawford Alexander Mann Iii

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 38, Spring 2012. In the 19th century Italy was the most desirable destination for travelers from every corner of Europe and beyond. Thousands crossed mountains, even oceans, to go there, leaving their "barbarous” homelands to study and admire Italy’s unsurpassed aesthetic and cultural riches. A poem in the New England Magazine in 1831 described the goals and ideals of visiting Italy on a European Grand Tour, calling those who did so "pilgrims of beauty.” Like religious pilgrims of centuries past, these lovers of art participated in a ritual journey, a powerful shared experience of Italy’s magnificent landscape, …

Buttering Up The British: Irish Exports And The Tourist Gaze, Mary Ann Bolger Feb 2012

Buttering Up The British: Irish Exports And The Tourist Gaze, Mary Ann Bolger

Articles

This paper argues that the advertising of Irish exports in the 1960s provided for their consumers a form of ‘tourism without travel’. (1) This concept is borrowed from Mark McGovern, who uses it to describe the experience of the consumer of the ‘Irish pub experience’ in his article ‘”The cracked pint glass of the servant”: the Irish pub, Irish identity and the tourist eye’ in Michael Cronin and Barbara O’Connor (eds) Irish tourism: image, culture, and identity. Clevedon; Buffalo, N.Y.: Channel View Publications, 2003 In particular, Kerrygold butter acted as an especially authentic souvenir of Ireland because it was, as …

Correlating The Nevius Method With Church Planting Movements: Early Korean Revivals As A Case Study, Wesley L. Handy Feb 2012

Correlating The Nevius Method With Church Planting Movements: Early Korean Revivals As A Case Study, Wesley L. Handy

Liberty Theological Review

John Nevius served as a missionary to China in the late nineteenth-century. From his field experience, Nevius argued for radical changes in missionary methodology. His greatest influence may have been on the mission to Korea beginning in the 1890s. David Garrison, currently serving in South Asia, served for several years in influential administrative roles within the International (formerly Foreign) Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He studied and advocated Church Planting Movements [CPM], necessitating a change in contemporary missionary methodology. Both men have made major contributions to the practice of missions. This article endeavors to show the similarities between …

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Journey From 'Indio Puro' To Cultural Mestizo: Indigenous Identity, Mestizaje, And Nationalism In Nineteenth-Century Mexico, Angelica Sanchez-Clark Feb 2012

Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Journey From 'Indio Puro' To Cultural Mestizo: Indigenous Identity, Mestizaje, And Nationalism In Nineteenth-Century Mexico, Angelica Sanchez-Clark

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Like many Mexican Liberal intellectuals, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano (b. Tixtla, Guerrero, 1834; d. San Remo, Italy, 1893) played a central role in defining the role that the mestizo—and, by force of circumstance, the Indian—would play in the formation of national identity after Mexicos independence from Spain. This dissertation examines Altamirano's literary and political works, as well as his personal correspondence, and his experiences as a soldier, educator, and politician, in order to understand how Altamirano, represented as an 'indio puro' who underwent the transformation to mestizo, exemplifies the link between Mexico's colonial past and its struggle to define its national …

On The Move: Games And Gaming Figures In Nineteenth-Century U.S. Literature, Douglas Anthony Guerra Jan 2012

On The Move: Games And Gaming Figures In Nineteenth-Century U.S. Literature, Douglas Anthony Guerra

Dissertations (1 year embargo)

In this dissertation, I analyze the way that gameplay, considered broadly, both facilitated and informed representations of agency in the nineteenth century. In effect, games were archives of possibility made procedurally discrete, rendering modes of action and agency legible in ways that are suggested, although differently engaged, in their somewhat less ephemeral cousins: books. Understanding that both games and books emerged from within similar fields of cultural production and often marketed themselves to the same audiences, I argue that taking a technical and materially historical approach to games helps us to explore major literary works of the period to startlingly …

Conditional Love: Imitation, Inheritance And Violent Relations In Early Modern Revenge Tragedies, Megan Elizabeth Allen Jan 2012

Conditional Love: Imitation, Inheritance And Violent Relations In Early Modern Revenge Tragedies, Megan Elizabeth Allen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In "Conditional Love," I reread narratives that seem to confirm normative kinship structures as excessive iterations of their very normativity. Examining revenge tragedies by Shakespeare, Marston, Middleton, Tourneur and Kyd, I argue that the metaphors each playwright uses to portray familial emotions reveal the ideologies underpinning both excessive and normative versions of familial relationships. For example, the pietas that causes Titus to refurbish his elaborate family tomb also leads him to murder one of his sons. It is because Piero, the villainous father in Marston's Antonio's Revenge, imagines his daughter as a physical part of him "as near my heart …

The Indonesian Massacre Of 1965 And Reconciliation Efforts In Indonesia, Wayan Ariati Jan 2012

The Indonesian Massacre Of 1965 And Reconciliation Efforts In Indonesia, Wayan Ariati

Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging past, present, and future

Indonesia declared its independence in August 17, 1945 after more than three centuries of colonization by the Dutch, and a short period of Japanese occupation (1942-1945), with Soekarno as the first president and Mohammad Hatta as his vice president. However, as an independent country, Indonesia encountered many problems economically, socially and politically. Under the Soekarno regime known as the Old Order, there were two powers; the Armed Forces (ABRI) and the Communist Party (PKI), both vying for the attention of Soeharto and intent on influencing his economic and political policies. The PKI was the largest communist party outside Russia and …

Household-Level Predictors Of The Presence Of Servants In Northern Orkney, Scotland, 1851–1901, Julia Jennings, James W. Wood, Patricia L. Johnson Jan 2012

Household-Level Predictors Of The Presence Of Servants In Northern Orkney, Scotland, 1851–1901, Julia Jennings, James W. Wood, Patricia L. Johnson

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Servants were an important part of the northwestern European household economy in the preindustrial past. This study examines household-level characteristics that are predictive of the presence of rural servants using data from Orkney, Scotland. The number of servants present in a household is related to household composition, landholding size, and the marital status of the household head. In addition, the sex of the particular servant hired reveals that the labor of male and female servants is not fungible. The sex of the servant hired is related to the ratio of male and female household members of working age, the occupation …

Women In Engineering; A Phenomenological Analysis Of Sociocultural Contextual Meaning Of Gender Roles, Pamela C. Charity-Leeke

ETD Archive

The twenty-first century presents many new challenges in career development and choices in the workforce for men and women. Currently, women comprise nearly half of the United States labor force. United States women are employed in various career areas, ranging from the traditional careers for women, such as education and secretarial, to their growing numbers in business, law, and medicine (U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010). As technology becomes the driving force of the economy, it has become essential that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are areas that more U.S. citizens should pursue. Although engineering is a …
