Ecosystems Under Sail: Specimen Transport In The Eighteenth-Century French And British Atlantics, Christopher M. Parsons, Kate S. Murphy Oct 2012

Ecosystems Under Sail: Specimen Transport In The Eighteenth-Century French And British Atlantics, Christopher M. Parsons, Kate S. Murphy

History

The ocean was frequently as hostile an environment for plants and animals as it was for humankind in the eighteenth century. Existing methods of preserving the plants, fish, birds, and land animals that provided the raw materials for European science increasingly proved insufficient for the often long voyages that brought them from colonial and indigenous collectors; specimens arrived dead when they were needed alive, rotten and damaged when they were needed whole, and they frequently suffered as they encountered negligent and uninterested sailors, and rats and other shipboard pests that showed too much interest. This paper examines strategies of specimen …

Dynamics Of An Acute Coral Disease Outbreak Associated With The Macroalgae Dictyota Spp. In Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, Usa, Marilyn E. Brandt, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Rob Waara, Jeff Miller, Brian Witcher, Andrew J. Estep, Matt Patterson Oct 2012

Dynamics Of An Acute Coral Disease Outbreak Associated With The Macroalgae Dictyota Spp. In Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, Usa, Marilyn E. Brandt, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Rob Waara, Jeff Miller, Brian Witcher, Andrew J. Estep, Matt Patterson

Biological Sciences

Reports of coral disease outbreaks have increased in recent decades, but often few details are known about these outbreaks, such as environmental triggers, associated biological variables, or even the precise temporal span of the outbreak. Here we document an acute outbreak of a rapid tissue loss disease on the highest live coral cover (15%–30%) reefs within Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, USA. This disease exhibited similar signs to white plague disease with the notable exception that a white film often was observed on the recently denuded skeleton. The temporal span of the disease was short (<2 mo). Partial mortality was recorded but there was no detectable impact to overall coral cover. A significant increase and then decrease in the cover of macroalgae, primarily of the genus Dictyota, occurred simultaneously …

Talking Drugs: The Burden Of Proof In Post-Garcetti Speech Retaliation Claims, Thomas E. Hudson Oct 2012

Talking Drugs: The Burden Of Proof In Post-Garcetti Speech Retaliation Claims, Thomas E. Hudson

Washington Law Review

Law Enforcement agencies fire their employees for speaking out in favor of drug legalization, which leads the employees to sue their former employers for violating their First Amendment Free Speech rights. These employee claims fall under the U.S. Supreme Court’s complex speech retaliation test, most recently articulated in Garcetti v. Ceballos. The analysis reveals that circuit courts are inconsistent as to who bears the burden of proving that they prevail under “Pickering balancing,” and how they should construct that burden. This Comment argues that U.S. Supreme Court precedent demands that the employer bears the “Pickering balancing” burden, and that …

Ulrich Pfeffel's Library: Parish Priests, Preachers, And Books In The Fifteenth Century, Matthew Wranovix Oct 2012

Ulrich Pfeffel's Library: Parish Priests, Preachers, And Books In The Fifteenth Century, Matthew Wranovix

History Faculty Publications

Ulrich Pfeffel, a priest, preacher, and avid book collector in the dioceses of Eichstätt and Bamberg in the second half of the fifteenth century, has long been known and celebrated in the local historiography of the diocese of Eichstätt, but has not received any sustained treatment. Thirty-two manuscripts and three printed books once owned by Pfeffel, in all containing well over 200 texts, have survived. The books themselves are of a remarkably even quality, of both moderate size and length. All appear to have their original fifteenth-century binding, usually leather, and three of the bindings can be identified as the …

New Media, Old Criticism: Bloggers' Press Criticism And The Journalistic Field, Tim P. Vos, Stephanie Craft, Seth Ashley Oct 2012

New Media, Old Criticism: Bloggers' Press Criticism And The Journalistic Field, Tim P. Vos, Stephanie Craft, Seth Ashley

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bourdieu's field theory suggests that the rise of the Internet and blogs could generate a shift in the journalistic field – the realm where actors struggle for autonomy – as new agents gain access. This textual analysis of 282 items of media criticism appearing on highly-trafficked blogs reveals an emphasis on traditional journalistic norms, suggesting a stable field. Occasional criticisms of the practicability of traditional norms and calls for greater transparency, however, may suggest an emerging paradigm shift.

Effect Of Ambient Air Temperature On Leaf Size In Raphanus Sativus, Matthew Fleming, Michael Mccormack Oct 2012

Effect Of Ambient Air Temperature On Leaf Size In Raphanus Sativus, Matthew Fleming, Michael Mccormack

Featured Research

Global warming is an increasing problem in today’s society. Thus, it is important to know how plants, specifically those that are cultivated for human consumption, react to rising average temperatures. This experiment tested how the leaf size of a common crop plant, Raphanus sativus (radish), is affected by two different temperatures. It is hypothesized that as temperature rises, the leaf size will increase, giving the leaf greater ability to cool via transpiration because of an larger surface area for stomatal conductance. This hypothesis was tested by growing two samples of plants in separate incubators. One sample was grown at a …

On Death And Disability: Reframing Educators' Perceptions Of Parental Response To Disability, Keith Allred, Christine Hancock Oct 2012

On Death And Disability: Reframing Educators' Perceptions Of Parental Response To Disability, Keith Allred, Christine Hancock

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This expository article critically reviews the literature from 1950-2010 regarding educators' perceptions of parental response to disability. Pre-service, practitioner, and professional literature are examined to explore the views presented to teacher candidates during the process of professional induction. As this literature relies upon the stage model of grief associated with Kübler-Ross' (1969) description of the acceptance of death, the effects on parent-professional relations and cultural understandings of disability are critiqued. The paper presents an alternative framing of parental response to disability emerging through positive psychology. Recommendations, based upon a disability studies in education perspective, are made regarding changes in the …

Shadow Citizens: Felony Disenfranchisement And The Criminalization Of Debt, Ann Cammett Oct 2012

Shadow Citizens: Felony Disenfranchisement And The Criminalization Of Debt, Ann Cammett

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

The disenfranchisement of felons has long been challenged as antidemocratic and disproportionately harmful to communities of color. Critiques of this practice have led to the gradual liberalization of state laws that expand voting rights for those who have served their sentences. Despite these legal developments, ex-felons face an increasingly difficult path to regaining the franchise. This article argues that, for ex-felons in particular, criminal justice debt can serve as an insurmountable obstacle to the resumption of voting rights and broader participation in society. This article uses the term "carceral debt" to identify criminal justice penalties levied on prisoners, "user fees" …

A Holey Cause: Sharia As A Cultural Defense, Raman Singh Oct 2012

A Holey Cause: Sharia As A Cultural Defense, Raman Singh

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

States have the power to ban cultural defenses under the police powers doctrine. However, any attempt to ban the use of Sharia as a cultural defense presents a serious problem. Because Sharia is a religious doctrine, any statute regulating Sharia must survive scrutiny under the religion clauses of the First Amendment. As a result of Supreme Court precedent, states are only permitted to ban the use of Sharia as a cultural defense if the statute is neutral and of general applicability. This Comment analyzes Awad v. Ziriax, in which the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma …
