From Recyclers To Risk-Takers: The Social, Economic And Political Challenges Of Selling Second-Hand Clothes In Kenya, Hailey Chalhoub

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Informal sectors across the world are gaining popularity for their prominent roles in development. They provide employment for those who have been excluded from mainstream economies and they make everyday goods and services accessible and affordable for all people. In Kenya the second-hand clothing trade has become an increasingly important industry within the informal sector as it provides affordable clothes to Kenyans of all socio-economic classes. Kenya has become East Africa’s hub for importing second-hand clothes, commonly referred to as mitumba and this trade depends on second-hand clothes that are donated in Western countries and collected and packaged by textile …

I'M Polynesian Too: Philosophy Of Assimilation, Cosmopolitanism, Colonialism, Race, & Culture, Aaron Hire Oct 2012

I'M Polynesian Too: Philosophy Of Assimilation, Cosmopolitanism, Colonialism, Race, & Culture, Aaron Hire

Senior Theses

Finding identity is difficult for mixed race and culture Polynesian Americans because there is no full integration into either racial/cultural side. For many Polynesian Americans (mixed race or not), finding an ethnic, cultural, and philosophical identity is a life-long struggle that constantly toils in matters tied to their souls and well being: issues of right and wrong, gender roles, morals/ethics, acceptance, and what it means to be human. For Polynesians and mixed race Polynesians, tribulation and alienation stem from the assimilation model that is present in the world today. “American Consumerist Cosmopolitanism,” as descended from colonialism, has impacted the well-being …

Cellular Localization Of Aquaporin-1 In The Human And Mouse Trigeminal Systems, Junying Gao, Meiyun Tan, Minxia Gu, Charles Marshall, Jiong Ding, Gang Hu, Ming Xiao Oct 2012

Cellular Localization Of Aquaporin-1 In The Human And Mouse Trigeminal Systems, Junying Gao, Meiyun Tan, Minxia Gu, Charles Marshall, Jiong Ding, Gang Hu, Ming Xiao

Center of Excellence in Rural Health Faculty Publications

Previous studies reported that a subpopulation of mouse and rat trigeminal neurons express water channel aquaporin-1 (AQP1). In this study we make a comparative investigation of AQP1 localization in the human and mouse trigeminal systems. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence results showed that AQP1 was localized to the cytoplasm and cell membrane of some medium and small-sized trigeminal neurons. Additionally, AQP1 was found in numerous peripheral trigeminal axons of humans and mice. In the central trigeminal root and brain stem, AQP1 was specifically expressed in astrocytes of humans, but was restricted to nerve fibers within the central trigeminal root and spinal trigeminal …

The fall 2012 semester has been a memorable one. Faculty, staff and students experienced the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. Powerless, cold and sometimes feeling isolated, the Molloy community pulled together to assist those in need in the aftermath of the storm. Though many of our own suffered great personal losses, we are grateful for the resilient spirit of the Community as everyone completes the semester with a positive attitude. Despite the devastation that was left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we have many things to be grateful for and many positive things have transpired over the past 6 months. …

Youth And Young Adult Homelessness In Worcester, Massachusetts:, Laurie Ross Oct 2012

Youth And Young Adult Homelessness In Worcester, Massachusetts:, Laurie Ross

Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research

Supporting Worcester’s ongoing effort to understand and address youth and young adult homelessness, the Community Roundtable on Youth Homelessness in conjunction with the Compass Project and Clark University conducted the fourth annual Point-in-Time Survey during October of 2012. Young people were surveyed at city shelters, youth programs, outside of schools, in parks, and on the streets of Worcester. Out of the 753 young people (ages 13to 25) surveyed, 120 (16%) dentified as homeless. We define homeless to include young people in shelters, staying with others temporarily (i.e. couch surfing) or on the streets. In addition to these 120 young people, …

William Fulford, “The Set,” And The Oxford And Cambridge Magazine, Patrick C. Fleming Oct 2012

William Fulford, “The Set,” And The Oxford And Cambridge Magazine, Patrick C. Fleming

Faculty Publications

The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine is familiar to Victorian scholars largely because its contributors included William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones (the most famous members of the set that produced the magazine) and because Dante Gabriel Rossetti published several poems there. For the magazine’s first readers, however, its most important feature was not the identity of individual contributors but the fact that it was produced by college students. The magazine was a group project, produced not just by Morris and Burne-Jones but by their whole set. Morris’s and Burne-Jones’s contributions are well-known, and their biographies never fail to mention the magazine …

A ‘‘Practical’’ Ethic For Animals, David Fraser Oct 2012

A ‘‘Practical’’ Ethic For Animals, David Fraser

Ethics and Animal Welfare Collection

Drawing on the features of ‘‘practical philosophy’’ described by Toulmin (1990), a ‘‘practical’’ ethic for animals would be rooted in knowledge of how people affect animals, and would provide guidance on the diverse ethical concerns that arise. Human activities affect animals in four broad ways: (1) keeping animals, for example, on farms and as companions, (2) causing intentional harm to animals, for example through slaughter and hunting, (3) causing direct but unintended harm to animals, for example by cropping practices and vehicle collisions, and (4) harming animals indirectly by disturbing life-sustaining processes and balances of nature, for example by habitat …

Association Between Stall Surface And Some Animal Welfare Measurements In Freestall Dairy Herds Using Recycled Manure Solids For Bedding, A. W. Husfeldt, M. I. Endres Oct 2012

Association Between Stall Surface And Some Animal Welfare Measurements In Freestall Dairy Herds Using Recycled Manure Solids For Bedding, A. W. Husfeldt, M. I. Endres

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between stall surface and some animal welfare measurements in upper Midwest US dairy operations using recycled manure solids as bedding material. The study included 34 dairy operations with herd sizes ranging from 130 to 3,700 lactating cows. Forty-five percent of the herds had mattresses and 55% had deep-bedded stalls. Farms were visited once between July and October 2009. At the time of visit, at least 50% of the cows in each lactating pen were scored for locomotion, hygiene, and hock lesions. On-farm herd records were collected for the …

Welfare Issues With Tail Docking Of Cows In The Dairy Industry Oct 2012

Welfare Issues With Tail Docking Of Cows In The Dairy Industry

Agribusiness Reports

Banned in several European countries, as well as three US states, and opposed and criticized by the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, experts, scientists, and representatives of industry, tail docking of cows in the dairy industry—the partial amputation of up to two-thirds of the tail, typically performed without anesthetic—is still permitted in most of the United States. Scientific studies have shown the practice to cause serious welfare problems for animals, including distress, pain, and increased fly attacks.

Profile: Twelve From 2012 Where Our Grads Are Headed Now, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

And yet, this issue of Profile does pick out several of our most recent grads, featuring not one but twelve of them. I ask you to remember, as you read about these students, that for each of the twelve students featured here, there are twelve more; and twelve more; and twelve more. There aren’t enough pages for us to include all the stories of our recent graduates. We wish we could.

Creating Art: In Search Of Meaning, Jagworks

Libraries Galleries and Outreach History

Glasswork from the exhibit, "Creating Art: In Search of Healing," was on display in the glass cases in the Mary Elizabeth and Charles Bernard Rodning Gallery of Art located on the third floor of the University of South Alabama Library from October 1, 2012, through December 21, 2012. The exhibit highlighted recent scientific findings that supported the idea that the process of making art is one of neurological restoration and seemed to be an effective tool in reducing levels of anxiety. The exhibit was free and open to the public during library hours.

The artist behind the exhibit was Dr. …
