Facebook, The Jobs Act, And Abolishing Ipos, Adam C. Pritchard Oct 2012

Facebook, The Jobs Act, And Abolishing Ipos, Adam C. Pritchard

Law & Economics Working Papers

The market for initial public offerings (IPOs) — the first sale of private firms’ stock to the public — is notorious for its swings from peaks to valleys. This paper argues that these swings reflect serious flaws in the IPO scheme, and that U.S. capital markets should move toward a more stable alternative. Specifically, this paper argues for a two-tier market system in which new stock issuers initially participate in a less-regulated private capital market of accredited investors and then, if they choose, they can move to a more regulated, broader public market. Likewise, firms currently participating in the public …

Tibet Is One Of The Centers Of Domestication Of Cultivated Barley, Fei Dai, Eviatar Nevo, Dezhi Wu, Jordi Comadran, Meixue Zhou, Long Qiu, Zhonghua Chen, Avigdor Beiles, Guoxiong Chen, Guoping Zhang

Publications

The Near East Fertile Crescent is well recognized as a primary center of barley origin, diversity, and domestication. A large number of wild barleys have been collected from the Tibetan Plateau, which is characterized by an extreme environment. We used genome-wide diversity array technology markers to analyze the genotypic division between wild barley from the Near East and Tibet. Our results confirmed the existence of Tibetan wild barley and suggested that the split between the wild barleys in the Near East and those in Tibet occurred around 2.76 million years ago (Mya). To test the concept of polyphyletic domestication of …

Care For The Socially Disadvantaged: The Role Of Race And Gender On The Physician-Patient Relationship And Patient Outcomes In A Safety Net Primary Care Clinic., Daniel Baughn Oct 2012

Care For The Socially Disadvantaged: The Role Of Race And Gender On The Physician-Patient Relationship And Patient Outcomes In A Safety Net Primary Care Clinic., Daniel Baughn

Theses and Dissertations

Compared to the general population, socially disadvantaged patients have higher rates of chronic illness and require more complex medical care. They also endorse higher levels of psychological distress and tend to engage in behavioral risk factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and smoking. These issues are particularly concerning given that this population tends to adhere less to medical recommendations, has limited access to health resources, and receives poorer treatment from providers. In an effort to address this disparity, The Affordable Care Act will expand health care access to an additional 23 million uninsured and 17 million underinsured Americans. However, …

The Impact Of Water On Girls' Formal Education: A Study Of Kenyan Secondary Schools, Jennifer Emick

Master's Theses

This study applies a human rights lens to view how the lack of access to potable water in Kenya’s rural areas impacts girls’ education. This research is intended to serve as a baseline for iteration and expansion, with the long-term goal of developing a greater understanding of the ways in which water development projects and the smarter provision of basic resources can be used as strategies for achieving gender equality in both education and civic participation.

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to define contemporary trends in permanent pacemaker use by analyzing a large national database.

BACKGROUND: The Medicare National Coverage Determination for permanent pacemaker, which emphasized single-chamber pacing, has not changed significantly since 1985. We sought to define contemporary trends in permanent pacemaker use by analyzing a large national database.

METHODS: We queried the Nationwide Inpatient Sample to identify permanent pacemaker implants between 1993 and 2009 using the International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision-Clinical Modification procedure codes for dual-chamber (DDD), single-ventricular (VVI), single-atrial (AAI), or biventricular (BiV) devices. Annual permanent pacemaker implantation rates and patient demographics were analyzed. …

The Effect Of Fair Trade Affiliation On Child Schooling: Evidence From A Sample Of Chilean Honey Producers, Leonardo Becchetti, Stefano Castriota, Melania Michetti Oct 2012

The Effect Of Fair Trade Affiliation On Child Schooling: Evidence From A Sample Of Chilean Honey Producers, Leonardo Becchetti, Stefano Castriota, Melania Michetti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We evaluate the impact of fair trade (FT) affiliation on child schooling within a sample of Chilean honey producers with a retrospective panel data approach. From a theoretical point of view we argue that FT should have a positive effect on child schooling since it generates a short run pure income effect together with a medium run productivity effect on both adult and child wages. On the other hand, because of the higher productivity generated by the medium run effect, the opportunity cost of child education increases if they work with their parents. The direction of the impact of FT …

The Push Factors For Corporate Social Responsibility: A Probit Analysis, Paolo Cominetti, Laura Poddi, Sergio Vergalli Oct 2012

The Push Factors For Corporate Social Responsibility: A Probit Analysis, Paolo Cominetti, Laura Poddi, Sergio Vergalli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the last two decades in OECD countries there has been increased development of Social Responsible (CSR is the acronym of Corporate Social Responsibility) certified firms. This certification is assigned by public and private companies which guarantee that the behaviour of a certain firm is environmentally and sociologically correct. The first part of our work is devoted to establishing a certification index defined as the intersection of two of the three main international indices (Domini 400 Social Index, Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, FTSE4Good Index). The purpose of this is to overcome certain problems related to the multiplicity of CSR …

The So2 Allowance Trading System: The Ironic History Of A Grand Policy Experiment, Richard Schmalensee, Robert N. Stavins Oct 2012

The So2 Allowance Trading System: The Ironic History Of A Grand Policy Experiment, Richard Schmalensee, Robert N. Stavins

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Two decades have passed since the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 launched a grand experiment in market-based environmental policy: the SO2 cap-and-trade system. That system performed well but created four striking ironies. First, by creating this system to reduce SO2 emissions to curb acid rain, the government did the right thing for the wrong reason. Second, a substantial source of this system’s cost-effectiveness was an unanticipated consequence of earlier railroad deregulation. Third, it is ironic that cap-and-trade has come to be demonized by conservative politicians in recent years, since this market-based, cost-effective policy innovation was initially championed and implemented …

Relaxing Constraints As A Conservation Policy, Ben Groom, Charles Palmer Oct 2012

Relaxing Constraints As A Conservation Policy, Ben Groom, Charles Palmer

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Eco-entrepreneurs in developing countries are often subject to market or institutional constraints, e.g. via credit rationing or missing markets. Conservation interventions which relax constraints may be both cost-effective and poverty reducing. A simulation using data from an intervention in Madagascar to relax the technological constraints of forest honey production investigates this possibility. Cost-effectively achieving dual environment-development goals is shown to depend on the severity of constraints, relative prices and, importantly, the nature of technology. Success is more likely for technologies exhibiting close to constant returns to scale or high input complementarity. Forest honey does not meet these requirements, whereas sustainable …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-10-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Integrating Water Resources Into Computable General Equilibrium Models - A Survey, Roberto Ponce, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Giupponi Oct 2012

Integrating Water Resources Into Computable General Equilibrium Models - A Survey, Roberto Ponce, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Giupponi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Water resources are facing several stresses in terms of quantity and quality. These pressures are closely related to the human interventions in fields like: agriculture, land-use/land use change, construction/management of reservoirs, pollutant emissions, and water /wastewater treatment, among others. Considering the critical role that water plays for agricultural production, any shock in water availability will have great implications for agricultural production, and through agricultural markets these impacts will reach the whole economy with economy-wide consequences. The aim of this report is to present a literature review about the state of the art methodology regarding the study of water issues using …
