Social Media And Ediscovery: Emerging Issues, Adam Cohen Oct 2012

Social Media And Ediscovery: Emerging Issues, Adam Cohen

Pace Law Review

Courts, as well as private sector and government policymakers, have only just begun to address the practical litigation issues raised by the proliferation of social media channels and content. This Article comments on some of those issues as they relate to electronic discovery (“eDiscovery”) and examines how they have been approached in emerging case law. It does not address proposed legislation on a domestic and international level that may impact social media’s use in litigation, nor does it purport to be in any way comprehensive in its coverage of developments and potential developments in the legal implications of social media.

Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven A. Samson Oct 2012

Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven A. Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The early nineteenth century in America was a period in which the idea of religious liberty came to be worked out in practice in a setting of growing diversity. The immediate effect of the dissolution of state religious establishments was to strengthen the vitality and prestige of the churches themselves. Before the end of the century, the church historian Philip Schaff could regard as normal ‘a free church in a free state, or a selfsupporting and self-governing Christianity in independent but friendly relation to the civil government.’

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Relationship Of Selected Institutional Variables To Community College Foundation Revenue, Van Patterson, Madeline Justice, Joyce A. Scott Oct 2012

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Relationship Of Selected Institutional Variables To Community College Foundation Revenue, Van Patterson, Madeline Justice, Joyce A. Scott

Administrative Issues Journal

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the annual revenue received by United States public Community College Foundations from 2008-2009 in relation to selected variables associated in the literature with successful foundation performance. This study also collected longitudinal data by replicating and expanding upon a similar study conducted by Dr. Sharon McEntee Carrier a decade earlier. Linear regression analysis was used to collect descriptive statistics that described the frequencies, central tendencies, and distribution of the data. The researchers used linear regression and analysis of variances (ANOVA) to study the relationship between revenue gained in connection with private giving …

Pollen Sterility—A Promising Approach To Gene Confinement And Breeding For Genetically Modified Bioenergy Crops, Joel P. Hague, Stephen L. Dellaporta, Maria A. Moreno, Chip Longo, Kimberly Nelson, Albert P. Kausch Oct 2012

Pollen Sterility—A Promising Approach To Gene Confinement And Breeding For Genetically Modified Bioenergy Crops, Joel P. Hague, Stephen L. Dellaporta, Maria A. Moreno, Chip Longo, Kimberly Nelson, Albert P. Kausch

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Advanced genetic and biotechnology tools will be required to realize the full potential of food and bioenergy crops. Given current regulatory concerns, many transgenic traits might never be deregulated for commercial release without a robust gene confinement strategy in place. The potential for transgene flow from genetically modified (GM) crops is widely known. Pollen-mediated transfer is a major component of gene flow in flowering plants and therefore a potential avenue for the escape of transgenes from GM crops. One approach for preventing and/or mitigating transgene flow is the production of trait linked pollen sterility. To evaluate the feasibility of generating …

Genetic And Environmental Vulnerabilities In Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Annette Karmiloff-Smith, Dean D'Souza, Tessa M. Dekker, Jo Van Herwegen, Fei Xu, Maja Rodic, Daniel Ansari Oct 2012

Genetic And Environmental Vulnerabilities In Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Annette Karmiloff-Smith, Dean D'Souza, Tessa M. Dekker, Jo Van Herwegen, Fei Xu, Maja Rodic, Daniel Ansari

Paediatrics Publications

One might expect that children with varying genetic mutations or children raised in low socioeconomic status environments would display different deficits. Although this expectation may hold for phenotypic outcomes in older children and adults, cross-syndrome comparisons in infancy reveal many common neural and sociocognitive deficits. The challenge is to track dynamic trajectories over developmental time rather than focus on end states like in adult neuropsychological studies. We contrast the developmental and adult approaches with examples from the cognitive and social domains, and we conclude that static models of adult brain lesions cannot be used to account for the dynamics of …

The Fetal Origins Of The Metabolic Syndrome: Can We Intervene?, Noelle Ma, Daniel B. Hardy Oct 2012

The Fetal Origins Of The Metabolic Syndrome: Can We Intervene?, Noelle Ma, Daniel B. Hardy

Paediatrics Publications

Epidemiological studies have suggested that metabolic programming begins during fetal life and adverse events in utero are a critical factor in the etiology of chronic diseases and overall health. While the underlying molecular mechanisms linking impaired fetal development to these adult diseases are being elucidated, little is known about how we can intervene early in life to diminish the incidence and severity of these long-term diseases. This paper highlights the latest clinical and pharmaceutical studies addressing how dietary intervention in fetal and neonatal life may be able to prevent aspects of the metabolic syndrome associated with IUGR pregnancies. © 2012 …

The Association Between Marital Transitions, Body Mass Index, And Weight: A Review Of The Literature, Lauren Dinour, May May Leung, Gina Tripicchio, Sahar Khan, Ming Chin Yeh Oct 2012

The Association Between Marital Transitions, Body Mass Index, And Weight: A Review Of The Literature, Lauren Dinour, May May Leung, Gina Tripicchio, Sahar Khan, Ming Chin Yeh

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

Objective. To examine the association between different marital transitions and changes in body mass index (BMI) and body weight. Methods. A systematic literature search was conducted for peer-reviewed articles published between January 1990 and December 2011. Longitudinal studies were included if they compared dependent variables, such as BMI or weight, before and after a change in marital status. Results. Twenty articles were included: 4 articles described only transitions into marriage and/or cohabitation, 2 articles described only transitions out of marriage and/or cohabitation, and 14 articles described both. Overall, transitions into marriage were associated with weight gain, whereas transitions out of …

Economy, Jobs, And Healthcare Discussed By Gwu Experts As Election Day Nears, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

With just three weeks until Americans cast their ballots for local, state, and federal candidates, many citizens are viewing the national economy as a pivotal issue that could determine the outcome of the presidential election. To help citizens sort through the propaganda, faculty members of the Gardner-Webb University Godbold School of Business recently weighed in on the issues relating to business, job creation, and the overall economic health of the country. “Without taking a position with a particular party, the culmination of the campaign itself will be a start to ending so much uncertainty,” said GWU Assistant Professor Dr. William …

Social Information Changes The Brain, Russell D. Fernald, Karen P. Maruska Oct 2012

Social Information Changes The Brain, Russell D. Fernald, Karen P. Maruska

Faculty Publications

Social animals live in complex physical and social environments requiring them to attend and rapidly respond to social and environmental information by changing their behavior. A key social influence is rank or status, a ubiquitous element in animal societies. Rank typically regulates access to reproduction and other resources, among other consequences for individuals. Because reproduction is arguably the most important event in any animals' life, understanding howreproduction is regulated by social status and related physiological factors can instruct our understanding of evolutionary change. This article reviews evidence from a model social system in which reproduction is tightly controlled by social …
