Ensure: A Time Sensitive Transport Protocol To Achieve Reliability Over Wireless In Petrochemical Plants, Leigh Sheneman Oct 2012

Ensure: A Time Sensitive Transport Protocol To Achieve Reliability Over Wireless In Petrochemical Plants, Leigh Sheneman

Computer Science Theses

As society becomes more reliant on the resources extracted in petroleum refinement the production demand for petrochemical plants increases. A key element is producing efficiently while maintaining safety through constant monitoring of equipment feedback. Currently, temperature and flow sensors are deployed at various points of production and 10/100 Ethernet cable is installed to connect them to a master control unit. This comes at a great monetary cost, not only at the time of implementation but also when repairs are required. The capability to provide plant wide wireless networks would both decrease investment cost and downtime needed for repairs. However, the …

Binders For Women, Blinders For Romney, Joanna L. Grossman Oct 2012

Binders For Women, Blinders For Romney, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

It was a welcome moment in the second presidential debate, held October 16 at Hofstra University, when one of the town hall participants asked a question about pay equity. The first debate, after all, had ignored all women’s issues, despite the fact that such issues have been at the center of several national political controversies, and reveal stark ideological and practical differences between the two candidates for president. And, of course, it is no secret that women comprise well more than half the electorate and an even greater proportion of the much sought-after “swing” and “undecided” voters. ...

The interesting …

Two-Photon Time-Lapse Microscopy Of Bodipy-Cholesterol Reveals Anomalous Sterol Diffusion In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Frederik W. Lund, Michael A. Lomholt, Lukasz M. Solanko, Robert Bittman, Daniel Wüstner Oct 2012

Two-Photon Time-Lapse Microscopy Of Bodipy-Cholesterol Reveals Anomalous Sterol Diffusion In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Frederik W. Lund, Michael A. Lomholt, Lukasz M. Solanko, Robert Bittman, Daniel Wüstner

Publications and Research

Background Cholesterol is an important membrane component, but our knowledge about its transport in cells is sparse. Previous imaging studies using dehydroergosterol (DHE), an intrinsically fluorescent sterol from yeast, have established that vesicular and non-vesicular transport modes contribute to sterol trafficking from the plasma membrane. Significant photobleaching, however, limits the possibilities for in-depth analysis of sterol dynamics using DHE. Co-trafficking studies with DHE and the recently introduced fluorescent cholesterol analog BODIPY-cholesterol (BChol) suggested that the latter probe has utility for prolonged live-cell imaging of sterol transport. Results We found that BChol is very photostable under two-photon (2P)-excitation allowing the acquisition …

Perceived Motion Sickness And Effects On Performance Following Naval Transportation, Joakim Dahlman, Torbjörn Falkmer, Fredrik Forsman Oct 2012

Perceived Motion Sickness And Effects On Performance Following Naval Transportation, Joakim Dahlman, Torbjörn Falkmer, Fredrik Forsman

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

The present study focused on the relationship between previous experiences of, and rated susceptibility to, motion sickness and its correlation to subjective measurements and actual performance. Performance was measured in terms of shooting precision among 23 participants from the Swedish amphibious corps after transportation in a small amphibious boat, while sealed off with no reference to the outside world. Self-rating questionnaires were collected regarding perceived performance and presence of motion sickness. The physiological status perceived by each participant was related to factors that generally indicate early stages of motion sickness, which also were correlated to deficits in performance. It was …

Possible Steps Of Complete Disassembly Of Post-Termination Complex By Yeast Eef3 Deduced From Inhibition By Translocation Inhibitors., Shinya Kurata, Ben Shen, Jun O Liu, Nono Takeuchi, Akira Kaji, Hideko Kaji Oct 2012

Possible Steps Of Complete Disassembly Of Post-Termination Complex By Yeast Eef3 Deduced From Inhibition By Translocation Inhibitors., Shinya Kurata, Ben Shen, Jun O Liu, Nono Takeuchi, Akira Kaji, Hideko Kaji

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Ribosomes, after one round of translation, must be recycled so that the next round of translation can occur. Complete disassembly of post-termination ribosomal complex (PoTC) in yeast for the recycling consists of three reactions: release of tRNA, release of mRNA and splitting of ribosomes, catalyzed by eukaryotic elongation factor 3 (eEF3) and ATP. Here, we show that translocation inhibitors cycloheximide and lactimidomycin inhibited all three reactions. Cycloheximide is a non-competitive inhibitor of both eEF3 and ATP. The inhibition was observed regardless of the way PoTC was prepared with either release factors or puromycin. Paromomycin not only inhibited all three reactions …

Mcdaniel Slough Wetland Restoration Staff Recommendation, Coastal Conservancy

Project Documents

The McDaniel Slough Wetland Restoration Project restored tidal flow and fish passage to 280 acres of former salt marsh wetlands and enhanced associated wildlife habitat. The project removed barriers to anadromous fish, restored tidal influence, deepened historic slough channels, partially removed failing or obsolete levees, and constructed levees to protect adjacent property.. This project improved connectivity by connecting more than 1,300 acres of local, state and federally protected lands along Humboldt Bay. This document summarizes the Coastal Conservancy's Staff Recommendation and authorization to provide funding for the implementation of the project.

Brief Of Benjamin N. Cardozo School Of Law Tax Clinic As Amicus Curiae In Support Of The Respondents, Carlton M. Smith

Amicus Briefs

The Cardozo Tax Clinic represents, for free, low-income taxpayers with respect to their federal income tax matters – both before the Internal Revenue Service and in the federal courts. Occasionally, the Clinic’s assistance has been sought after those individuals, on their own, filed a document late – either with the IRS or the courts -- under a time deadline set out in the Internal Revenue Code or in a regulation promulgated thereunder. Usually, no extraordinary equitable reasons occurred that might excuse such late filing. See, e.g., Iljazi v. Commissioner, T.C. Summary Op. 2010-59 (client simply filed administrative claim for …

With Religious Liberty For All: A Defense Of The Affordable Care Act's Contraception Coverage Mandate, Frederick Mark Gedicks Oct 2012

With Religious Liberty For All: A Defense Of The Affordable Care Act's Contraception Coverage Mandate, Frederick Mark Gedicks

Faculty Scholarship

The “contraception mandate” of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 poses a straightforward question for religious liberty jurisprudence: Must government excuse a believer from complying with a religiously burdensome law, when doing so would violate the liberty of others by imposing on them the costs and consequences of religious beliefs that they do not share? To ask this question is to answer it: One's religious liberty does not include the right to interfere with the liberty of others, and thus religious liberty may not be used by a religious employer to force employees to pay the costs …

The Gold Clause Cases And Constitutional Necessity, Gerard N. Magliocca Oct 2012

The Gold Clause Cases And Constitutional Necessity, Gerard N. Magliocca

Florida Law Review

This Article presents a case study of how constitutional actors respond when the rule of law and necessity are sharply at odds and provides some background on Section Four of the Fourteenth Amendment.

In 1935, the Supreme Court heard constitutional challenges to the abrogation of “gold clauses” in contracts and Treasury bonds. Gold clauses guaranteed that creditors would receive payment in gold dollars as valued at the time a contract was made. Due to the deflation that followed the Great Depression, this meant that debtors were being forced to pay back much more than they owed originally. To stop a …

Just What The Doctor Ordered? How The Patient Safety And Quality Improvement Act May Cure Florida’S Patients’ Right To Know About Adverse Medical Incidents (Amendment 7), Kelly G. Dunberg Oct 2012

Just What The Doctor Ordered? How The Patient Safety And Quality Improvement Act May Cure Florida’S Patients’ Right To Know About Adverse Medical Incidents (Amendment 7), Kelly G. Dunberg

Florida Law Review

This Note addresses the impact of Florida’s Patients’ Right to Know About Adverse Medical Incidents (commonly known as Amendment 7) on the peer review process and the quality of healthcare in Florida. Enacted in 2004 as an amendment to the Florida Constitution, Amendment 7 provides citizens access to records and reports of past adverse medical incidents involving doctors, hospitals, and healthcare providers. Critics of Amendment 7 argue that peer review privilege protections are necessary to maintain high-quality healthcare in Florida, pointing to the need to encourage candid and vigorous evaluations by physicians of their colleagues. In contrast, Amendment 7 supporters …

Popular Originalism? The Tea Party Movement And Constitutional Theory, Rebecca E. Zietlow Oct 2012

Popular Originalism? The Tea Party Movement And Constitutional Theory, Rebecca E. Zietlow

Florida Law Review

The U.S. Constitution is currently the subject of a heated political debate. Tea Party activists have invoked the Constitution as the foundation of their conservative political philosophy. These activists are engaged in “popular originalism,” using popular constitutionalism—constitutional interpretation outside of the courts—to invoke originalism as interpretive method. The Tea Party movement thus provides an excellent heuristic to explore the relationship between originalism and popular constitutionalism, two prominent trends in constitutional theory. Both originalists and popular constitutionalists study legal history to illuminate constitutional meaning, but the two schools of thought draw diverging lessons from that history. Originalists look to history to …

Toward A Specific Intent Requirement In White Collar Crime Statutes: How The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act Of 2010 Sheds Light On The “General Intent Revolution”, Elizabeth R. Sheyn Oct 2012

Toward A Specific Intent Requirement In White Collar Crime Statutes: How The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act Of 2010 Sheds Light On The “General Intent Revolution”, Elizabeth R. Sheyn

Florida Law Review

The recent passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, as amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (collectively, ACA), has altered the landscape of health care and health insurance. However, it has also served to highlight the revolution in the intent requirement for white collar crimes. In particular, the ACA lowers the intent requirement for several health care fraud statutes from “specific intent to defraud” to “general intent to deceive,” which is consistent with federal courts’ recent trend of not requiring proof of the defendant’s knowledge of the law before finding a …
