Gender, Masculinity, Femininity And Help Seeking In College, Heath Marrs, Ellen A. Sigler, Robyn D. Brammer
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
The current academic performance struggles of college men is gaining increasing research attention (Sax, 2008a, 2008b), but few studies have explored the possible impact of gender-related attributes such as masculinity and femininity on academic help-seeking behaviors and academic performance. In this study of 567 college undergraduates, students who classified themselves as androgynous on the Bem Sex-Role Inventory were more likely to engage in academic help-seeking behaviors than those classified as male sex-typed, female sex-typed, and undifferentiated. No significant differences were found for academic performance. These results highlight the importance of exploring the potential influence of gender-related constructs on academic behavior …
Coalition Portfolios And Interest Group Influence Over The Policy Process, Michael T. Heaney, Geoff M. Lorenz
Coalition Portfolios And Interest Group Influence Over The Policy Process, Michael T. Heaney, Geoff M. Lorenz
Working Papers
While not all interest groups participate in coalitions, some groups join multiple coalitions to form portfolios of coalition memberships. We test hypotheses that the composition of coalition portfolios increases the influence of interest groups over public policy when: (1) the number of coalitions in a group’s portfolio gets larger; (2) the average size of the coalitions in a group’s portfolio gets larger; and (3) a group’s portfolio improves its position within the overall network of coalitions. We evaluate these hypotheses using a study of 115 interest groups involved in the debate over the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. The results …

Adjuvant Hormonal Therapy In Postmenopausal Women With Breast Cancer: Physician's Choices, Asi Jamal, Shiyam Kumar, Sajjad Raza, Maria Mehboob, Osama Ishtiaq
Internal Medicine, East Africa
The choice of adjuvant hormonal therapy in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer has remained a matter of controversy and debate. The variety of agents is available, with each claiming to be superior. This clinical survey was undertaken to get an impression of the physician's first choice of therapy in an attempt to find out what questions still need to be answered in the making of "standard of care." A web-based clinical survey was sent to the cancer physicians around the world, and 182 physicians responded to the survey. Most were medical oncologists in a tertiary care hospital. …

Low soil fertility, stemborers (particularly, Chilo partellus) and Striga weeds (Striga hermonthica and Striga asiatica) are major limitations to production of maize in western Kenya. The " Push-Pull" technology ("PPT") has been described as an appropriate innovative technology capable of addressing these constraints. The technology involves intercropping maize with Desmodium and planting Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) around the intercrop, but in the current study a modified PPT was used and Napier grass was not included. Field trials were conducted in two locations in western Kenya during 4 subsequent seasons to test the hypothesis that maize yield, the degree of Striga …
A Third Sector Imaginary, Roger A. Lohmann
A Third Sector Imaginary, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A basic theoretical challenge for third sector scholars today is to speak in general and consistent terms about the institutional and normative orders forming outside households, markets and governments in numerous countries, regions and urban centers everywhere. The third sectors of the world have formed in light of a range of distinctive local conditions, including history, culture, law and other factors. A growing international group of scholars has produced a convincing, although limited and partial model of the third sector based in the linked concepts of nonprofit organization, nonprofit sector and non-distribution constraints. We will need to pay greater heed …

The Voice In The Whirlwind: Lessons For Job -- Randomness And Natural Evil, Richard Carlson
Conference on Philosophy and Theology
The innocent Job suffers, friends are no help, and then Job screams at Yahweh, demanding justice. The first surprise is that Yehweh responds to Job, does not criticize him but tells him he is ignorant, and then gives him a science lesson. The content of that lesson is the second surprise.

School Safety Planning: Barriers To Implementation Perceived By District Leadership And First Responders, David J. Alba, Robert K. Gable
School Safety Planning: Barriers To Implementation Perceived By District Leadership And First Responders, David J. Alba, Robert K. Gable
K-12 Education
This study explored the perceptions of district and first responder leadership (N = 6) with respect to school crisis preparedness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a stratified purposeful sampling of school, police, and fire/rescue personnel who were primarily responsible for the planning, training, and implementation of district safety policies. Overarching themes were: desire for coherence among procedures with guidance from the state level; and, ambiguity of roles and responsibilities in the event of a crisis. Participants believed the onus to foster inter-agency partnerships was the responsibility of either the state, or the partnering agencies. In addition, while the importance …

Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep
Pedaling Poverty Through Pennies, Dimes, And Disaster, Nicholas D. Hartlep
NERA Conference Proceedings 2012
This paper synthesizes and categorizes important social justice scholarship into a useable taxonomy that social justice workers can use in their personal and professional spheres of influence. The present paper discusses the idea that although social justice activities and/or projects may originate with noteworthy missions and motivations, unless their creators are vigilant, service projects have the potential to deteriorate into myth-making initiatives that reinforce the problems that they originally intended to ameliorate.

Reconsidering The Model Minority And Black Mormon Discourses, Nicholas D. Hartlep
NERA Conference Proceedings 2012
The main purpose of this paper is to explain how Black Mormonism is an example of model minority discourse(Hattori, 1999), and how this discourse—the model minority stereotype—is deleterious to the education of Black students

Gearing Up To Gear Up: Four Perspectives On Early Implementation Considerations For Gear Up, Sousan Arafeh, Joy Fopiano, Deb Risisky, Norris Haynes
NERA Conference Proceedings 2012
GEAR UP, a federally-funded pre-college outreach program, strives to provide academic and other supports to middle and high school students and their families to help them prepare for, and pursue, higher education. GEAR UP was established in 1998 by President Clinton through Title IV of the 1998 Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). This paper utilizes a phenomenological frame to explore certain key considerations involved in the initial implementation phases of a GEAR UP grant. Four distinct qualitative phenomenological perspectives from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) faculty members involved in a current State of Connecticut GEAR UP …
