Time Zones, Screencasts, And Becoming Real: Lessons Learned As A Distance Librarian, Rebecca Hedreen Oct 2012

Time Zones, Screencasts, And Becoming Real: Lessons Learned As A Distance Librarian, Rebecca Hedreen

Urban Library Journal

The library literature abounds with articles, presentations, and books on using various sorts of distance learning tools and techniques for library services. (I direct you to the excellent 5th Bibliography of Library Services for Distance Learning Resources from the Distance Learning Section of ACRL or practically any library conference proceedings for numerous examples.) Many of those resources will discuss how a particular type of tool, say, webchat, can be used for library services, with examples of successful, and sometimes unsuccessful, use in various types of libraries. I have, however, very rarely seen any discussion of when to use such tools, …

Academic Library Services To Distance Learners: In Consideration Of Costs, Technology, And Stability, Christopher Diaz Oct 2012

Academic Library Services To Distance Learners: In Consideration Of Costs, Technology, And Stability, Christopher Diaz

Urban Library Journal

In the last fifteen years, there has been an increase in the implementation of distance education programs in colleges and universities. The challenge for academic libraries will be to create working models of library support for distance learners that are both economically sustainable, and qualitatively equitable to the support given to on-campus students. The author suggests that training in advanced web computing and educational technologies must begin in the graduate study of library and information science to help offset the training costs for academic libraries. One solution might include utilizing networks of distance students to create business and other partnerships …

Creating A Custom E-Book For Your Course, Jennifer L. Bellot, Phd, Rn, Mhsa, Cne

Tech Talks

Dr. Bellot used AcademicPub to create a custom ebook for her course. Students were able to purchase the ebook edition for use on their iPads or chose to have a print copy made and mailed to them. AcademicPub makes it easy to incorporate your syllabus, presentations, a collection of content from different text books and journal articles into a single book for your course. Dr. Bellot will describe the process, compare it to past practices and report on student satisfaction with this new format for course materials.

Dental Medicine Faculty Research

Background: Research programs within medical and dental schools are important vehicles for biomedical and clinical discovery, serving as effective teaching and learning tools by providing situations in which predoctoral students develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Although research programs at many medical and dental schools are well-established, they may not be well integrated into the predoctoral curriculum to effectively support the learning objectives for their students. Methods: A series of structured seminars, incorporating faculty research, was designed for first-year dental students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine to reinforce and support the concepts and skills taught in …

Construct-Validity Of The Engagement With Challenge Measure For Adolescents: Structural- And Criterion-Validity Evidence, E. Whitney G. Moore, David Hansen Oct 2012

Construct-Validity Of The Engagement With Challenge Measure For Adolescents: Structural- And Criterion-Validity Evidence, E. Whitney G. Moore, David Hansen

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

For adolescents, engaging with challenge is a key developmental task, hypothesized to support development of adult-like competencies (e.g., agency and self-direction; Larson, 2000). This study aimed to assess the construct-validity (structural- and concurrent-validity) of a new self-report measure assessing adolescents’ engagement with challenge to help researchers understand how different settings and the conditions in these settings support adolescents’ development. The sample consisted of 337 adolescents in 10 FFA programs along with the adult advisors in each program. Adolescents completed a questionnaire, which included the Engagement with Challenge measure and the following criterion variables: number of contests completed, participation frequency, and …

Politics Versus Economics, Ishrat Husain Dr. Oct 2012

Politics Versus Economics, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

A question often asked is that when current economic ills have been diagnosed and we know what needs to be done, why doesn’t it happen? The reason is the inherent disjuncture between the political risks a ruling party is willing to take and the economic rewards accruing through prudent economic management that will take care of these economic ills.

This asymmetry between the incurrence of the costs and the appropriation of benefits lies at the heart of the non-reformist stance of democratically elected governments. India – the largest democracy in the world – has recently been faced with a similar …

Narrative Abilities Of Optimal Outcome Children And Adolescents With A Previous History Of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Joyce Suh Oct 2012

Narrative Abilities Of Optimal Outcome Children And Adolescents With A Previous History Of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Joyce Suh

Master's Theses

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) have traditionally been considered a lifelong condition; however there appear to be a subset of people who make such significant improvements that they no longer meet diagnostic criteria for autism. The current study examines whether these “optimal outcome” (OO) children and adolescents continue to have subtle language and socio-cognitive deficits. Method: The narratives of 15 children and adolescents with a history of ASD who achieved optimal outcomes (OO), 15 high-functioning children and adolescents with a current ASD diagnosis (HFA), and 15 typically developing peers (TD) were evaluated. Results: OO children and adolescents have few residual …

Interview With Ruben Cortes, Ruben Cortes, California State University, Monterey Bay

Chinatown Renewal Project

Mr. Ruben Cortes describes his life as a Latino growing up in Salinas, California during the 1970s and 1980s. He was the son of two farm workers who often worked seasonal shifts in the fields to provide for their family. Watching his parents work hard rubbed off on him, making him a great student at all the schools he attended in the North Salinas area and on to San Jose State University. Mr. Cortes begins with a brief summary of how his family came to Salinas. He tells the story how his dad was going to move to Oregon or …

Effect Of Axonal Micro-Tubules On The Morphology Of Retinal Nerve Fibers Studied By Second-Harmonic Generation, Hyungsik Lim, John Danias Oct 2012

Effect Of Axonal Micro-Tubules On The Morphology Of Retinal Nerve Fibers Studied By Second-Harmonic Generation, Hyungsik Lim, John Danias

Publications and Research

Abstract. Many studies suggest that the degradation of microtubules in the retinal ganglion cells may be an early event in the progression of glaucoma. Because reflectance and birefringence of the retinal nerve fibers arise primarily from microtubules, the optical properties have been intensively studied for early detection of the disease. We previously reported a novel nonlinear optical signal from axonal microtubules for visualizing the retinal nerve fibers, namely second-harmonic generation (SHG). We demonstrate the use of axonal SHG to investigate the effect of microtubules on the morphology of the retinal nerve fiber bundles. Time-lapse SHG imaging of ex vivo rat …
