Bibliometric Measures And National Institutes Of Health Funding At Colleges Of Osteopathic Medicine, 2006-2010, Richard Suminski, Dean Hendrix, Linda E. May, Jason A. Wasserman, V. James Guillory

Faculty and Staff Publications

Context: During the past 20 years, colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) have made several advances in research that have substantially improved the osteopathic medical profession and the health of the US population. Furthering the understanding of research at COMs, particularly the factors influencing the attainment of extramural funds, is highly warranted and coincides with the missions of most COMs and national osteopathic organizations.

Objectives: To describe bibliometric measures (numbers of peer-reviewed publications [ie, published articles] and citations of these publications, impact indices) at COMs from 2006 through 2010 and to examine statistical associations between these measures and the amount of …

The Role Of Keyword Advertising In Competition Among Rival Brands, Elisa V. Mariscal, David S. Evans Nov 2012

The Role Of Keyword Advertising In Competition Among Rival Brands, Elisa V. Mariscal, David S. Evans

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper considers recent proposals for restricting keyword advertising using competitor brand names. Keyword advertising is similar to many other widely used and valuable methods of marketing to the customers of rivals that increase competition and facilitate entry. Queries for products or services using search engines help inform consumers about other competitive alternatives and may enable them to compare different product offerings. Economists have found overwhelmingly that this type of informative and comparative advertising benefits consumers and, conversely, that restricting such advertising harms consumers. Complainants in some recent keyword advertising cases have sought to forbid search engines from using trademarked …

Balance-Of-Powers Arguments And The Structural Constitution, Eric A. Posner Nov 2012

Balance-Of-Powers Arguments And The Structural Constitution, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Balance-of-powers arguments are ubiquitous in judicial opinions and academic articles that address separation-of-powers disputes over the president's removal authority, power to disregard statutes, authority to conduct foreign wars, and much else. However, the concept of the balance of powers has never received a satisfactory theoretical treatment. This Essay examines possible theories of the balance of powers and rejects them all as unworkable and normatively questionable. Judges and scholars should abandon the balance-of-powers metaphor and instead address directly whether bureaucratic innovation is likely to improve policy outcomes.

Anabolic And Androgenic Effects Of Certain Atriplex Species Grown In Egypt, Dina M. El-Kersh, Fatma S. El-Sakhawy, Dina R. Abou-Hussein, Amany A. Sleem

Pharmacy

20-Hydroxyecdysone (20-HE) was detected by TLC in the ethyl acetate fraction of two Atriplex species grown in Egypt: A. lindleyi subsp. inflata and A. leucoclada. EIA quantification of 20-HE proved its presence in a concentration of 9.15 and 7.3 μg/g dried aerial parts in each of the two species, respectively. Significant anabolic and androgenic activities were demonstrated for 20-HE comparing to testosterone; the study also revealed that the total alcohol extract and the ethyl acetate fraction of A. lindleyi subsp. inflata exhibited greater activities than their analogues in A. leucoclada. Column chromatographic fractionation of the ethyl acetate fraction of the …

A Vision For How Technology Will Change The Work Of The Hsc By The Year 2020, Holly Buchanan, Sally Bowler-Hill

Historical and Administrative Collection

On June 29, 2010, the HSC Executive Leadership Council participated in a 3-hour retreat to envision how technology will change the way we work at the HSC across all mission areas by the year 2020. The purpose of the retreat, a goal for CY10, was to give the Council a dedicated opportunity to talk about technology outside of the HSCs regular strategic planning process. This narrative is an attempt to inter-relate the concepts brought forward at this retreat, in which a modified Delphi process was used, and provide some context so they will be more readily understood.'

Health Literacy, Cognitive Impairment, And Medication Adherence In Veterans With Heart Failure, Lee Ann Hawkins Phd Nov 2012

Health Literacy, Cognitive Impairment, And Medication Adherence In Veterans With Heart Failure, Lee Ann Hawkins Phd

Dissertations

Background: Heart failure (HF) affects 5.8 million people in the United States, costly in terms of patient mortality and morbidity as well as healthcare dollars. One important manifestation of poor HF outcomes is the excessive admission-readmission cycle. Non-adherence to medication is responsible for the majority of HF readmissions. Identification and intervention for key factors contributing to poor medication adherence is critical to improving outcomes. Two such factors prevalent in persons with HF are cognitive impairment (CI) and poor health literacy (HL). There is a paucity of tested interventions designed to improve medication adherence by addressing underlying CI or HL. A …

Public Health Nurse Decisions Regarding At-Risk Postpartum Case Closure, Denise K. Thompson Phd Nov 2012

Public Health Nurse Decisions Regarding At-Risk Postpartum Case Closure, Denise K. Thompson Phd

Dissertations

During the late 19th century, public health nursing emerged in the United States as an autonomous nursing specialty providing maternal-child health (MCH) home visitation services. Present day MCH public health nurses (PHNs), guided by their predecessors, focus on health promotion and disease prevention in at-risk maternal-child populations. Health policies, funding streams, and local public health nursing protocols are examples of extrinsic factors that may affect length of home visitation services for at-risk women and their children. The purpose of this study was to better understand the factors related to variations in PHN decisions to terminate home visitation services for at-risk …

Clinical Review Of Treatment Options For Major Depressive Disorder In Patients With Coronary Heart Disease, Fahad D. Alosaimi, Brian Baker Nov 2012

Clinical Review Of Treatment Options For Major Depressive Disorder In Patients With Coronary Heart Disease, Fahad D. Alosaimi, Brian Baker

Saudi Medical Journal

It is established that the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD) in coronary heart disease (CHD) populations is high and is associated with increased mortality. In this systematic review, we examined the evidence for the effective treatment of MDD in CHD patients by reviewing randomized control trials (RCTs) between 1980 and 2011 and then assessing whether these treatments were clinically meaningful. A total of 8 RCTs were retrieved. Sertraline, citalopram, and mirtazapine were safe from a cardiac perspective, but only sertraline and citalopram were clearly more effective than placebo in CHD patients with moderate-to-severe type, recurrent MDD, or MDD episode …
