Italian Fascism’S Soviet Enemy And The Propaganda Of Hate, 1941-1943, Marla Stone Jan 2012

Italian Fascism’S Soviet Enemy And The Propaganda Of Hate, 1941-1943, Marla Stone

Journal of Hate Studies

In conjunction with the war against the Soviet Union which began in June 1941, the Italian Fascist regime promulgated a virulent brand of anti-communism and oversaw a campaign of hate-mongering propaganda targeted at its Soviet enemy. This propaganda produced to justify the war highlighted the Manichean struggle against the Soviet Union and the special horrors of the Soviet communist enemy. Using longstanding stereotypes about a Russian lack of civilization, 19th-century ideas about racially expressed biological difference, and more recent tropes about Bolshevik barbarism and immorality, official representations of Fascism’s historic enemy—the communist—put forward a racially degenerate, godless peril from the …

Blood On The Tongue: Reading Abjection In Nationalist Blood Libels From Nazi Germany To Hamas And The British National Party, Damon T. Berry Jan 2012

Blood On The Tongue: Reading Abjection In Nationalist Blood Libels From Nazi Germany To Hamas And The British National Party, Damon T. Berry

Journal of Hate Studies

The blood libel is usually known as the Medieval European legend about Jews killing Christians to consume their blood or otherwise use it in rituals. However, in this paper I explore more recent instances of the blood libel that have emerged in nationalist contexts. What I call the nationalist blood libel is more overtly politicized than its predecessors, as there is a relationship between the accusatory portrayals of groups signified as alien and what Arjun Appadurai in Fear of Small Numbers (2006) called an “anxiety of incompletion” inherent in the modern nation-state as a result of the political discourses of …

Combating Hate Through Young Adult Literature, Rachel Dean-Ruzicka Jan 2012

Combating Hate Through Young Adult Literature, Rachel Dean-Ruzicka

Journal of Hate Studies

Young adult literature can help readers look beyond tolerance toward a cosmopolitan ethics of difference as a more sophisticated position for combating hatred. In popular discourse, the ideal of tolerance is generally presented uncritically and deployed as the best response to a perceived difference in another. However, the ideal of tolerance presents many problems. Rather than discouraging hatred, tolerance merely asks us not to act upon related feelings. Additionally, tolerance is often deployed not only as an idealized set of behaviors, but also as a moral imperative. Thus tolerance encourages cultural relativism where we are expected to be tolerant of …

Book Reviews: Arthur Goldwag’S The New Hate: A History Of Fear And Loathing On The Populist Right & Thomas R. Pegram’S One Hundred Percent American: The Rebirth And Decline Of The Ku Klux Klan In The 1920s, Rebecca Barrett-Fox Jan 2012

Book Reviews: Arthur Goldwag’S The New Hate: A History Of Fear And Loathing On The Populist Right & Thomas R. Pegram’S One Hundred Percent American: The Rebirth And Decline Of The Ku Klux Klan In The 1920s, Rebecca Barrett-Fox

Journal of Hate Studies

As reported by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the number of hate groups in the United States has continually risen since 2000 in response to three factors: the election of the nation’s first African American president, economic turmoil, and undocumented immigration (Potok, 2011). While these structural changes might feel painful for those native-born white Americans who view signs of increasing pluralism as worrisome and who believe that their economic losses are due to the gains of minority groups, they are not new challenges—nor are the hate-filled responses to them new. In both One Hundred Percent American: The Rebirth and …

Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior: An Investigation Of The Influence Of Neighborhood Crime Rates On Mode Choice – Phase Ii, Mti Report 11-04, Christopher Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Justin Meek, Matthew Piven Jan 2012

Neighborhood Crime And Travel Behavior: An Investigation Of The Influence Of Neighborhood Crime Rates On Mode Choice – Phase Ii, Mti Report 11-04, Christopher Ferrell, Shishir Mathur, Justin Meek, Matthew Piven

Mineta Transportation Institute

There are considerable environmental and public health benefits if people choose to walk, bicycle, or ride transit, instead of drive. However, little work has been done on the effects of neighborhood crimes on mode choice. Instinctively, we understand that the threats posed by possible criminal activity in one’s neighborhood can play a major role in the decision to drive, take transit, walk or ride a bicycle, but so far little empirical evidence supports this notion, let alone guides public infrastructure investments, land use planning, or the allocation of police services. This report--describing Phase 2 of a research study conducted for …

Association Analyses Of Variants In The Dio2 Gene With Early-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Pima Indians, Saraswathy Nair, Yunhua Li Miller, Emilio Ortega, Sayuko Kobes, Clifton Bogardus, Leslie J. Baier

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The type 2 deiodinase gene (DIO2) encodes a deiodinase that converts the thyroid prohormone, thyroxine, to the biologically active triiodothyronine. Thyroid hormones regulate energy balance and may also influence glucose metabolism. Therefore, we hypothesized that variations in DIO2 could contribute to obesity or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Pima Indians.

Methods: Sequencing of the DIO2 gene in DNA from 83 Pima Indians identified 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Several of these SNPs were in perfect genotypic concordance among the 83 samples that were sequenced, and all 12 could be divided into five linkage disequilibrium groups. One representative …

Women drastically loose bone during and after menopause leading to osteoporosis, a disease characterized by low bone mass increasing the risk of fractures with minor trauma. Existing therapies mainly reduce bone resorption, however, all existing drugs have severe side effects. Recently, the focus is to identify alternative medicines that can prevent and treat osteoporosis with minimal or no side effects. We used Cissus quadrangularis (CQ), a medicinal herb, to determine its effects on bone loss after ovariectomy in C57BL/6 mice. Two-month old mice were either sham operated or ovariectomized and fed CQ diet. After eleven weeks, mice were sacrificed and …

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy: A Review, Anirban Bhattacharyya, Sukhdeep Singh Basra, Priyanka Sen, Biswajit Kar

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Peripartum cardiomyopathy is idiopathic heart failure occurring in the absence of any determinable heart disease during the last month of pregnancy or the first 5 months postpartum. The incidence varies worldwide but is high in developing nations; the cause of the disease might be a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Diagnostic echocardiographic criteria include left ventricular ejection fraction2.7 cm/m(2). Electrocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging, endomyocardial biopsy, and cardiac catheterization aid in the diagnosis and management of peripartum cardiomyopathy. Cardiac protein assays can also be useful, as suggested by reports of high levels of NT-proBNP, cardiac troponin, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, …

Mid-Aortic Syndrome In A 3-Year-Old Girl Successfully Treated By Aorto-Aortic Grafting And Renal Artery Implantation Into The Graft, Tanja Kersnik Levart, Tomislav Klokocovnik

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Mid-aortic syndrome, an uncommon acquired or congenital condition characterized by segmental narrowing of the abdominal or distal descending thoracic aorta, is frequently accompanied by ostial stenosis of the aorta's branches. If left untreated, it can result in life-threatening complications secondary to severe hypertension.

We report the case of a 3-year-old girl with congenital mid-aortic syndrome, who was diagnosed by chance in the course of a viral illness, and whose high blood pressure values were first dismissed as inaccurate. Attempts to achieve medical or endovascular control of her hypertension were unsuccessful. She was thereafter successfully treated by aorto–aortic bypass grafting, resection …

After Avandia: The Use Of Antidiabetic Drugs In Patients With Heart Failure, Khaled I Khalaf, Heinrich Taegtmeyer

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Managing diabetes mellitus is an ongoing concern, especially in the presence of heart failure. Recent reports have drawn attention to adverse cardiovascular events associated with the use of thiazolidinediones, including rosiglitazone (Avandia). In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration implemented a stringent “restricted access program” for the prescription of Avandia. Other studies, which have revealed increased mortality rates in association with tight glycemic control, raise serious concerns about managing diabetes in heart-failure patients.

Herein, we provide a perspective on the management of noninsulin-dependent diabetes in patients with heart failure. We point out that thiazolidinediones exert their major effects through …

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

We sought to evaluate the restoration of microcirculatory patency after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in an unselected cohort of patients at a tertiary center.

We retrospectively evaluated distributions of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) myocardial perfusion grade (TMPG) and the myocardial blush grade (MBG) in all primary PCI procedures performed at our institution during 2008. We defined optimal microvascular perfusion as simultaneous TMPG 3 and MBG 3 at procedure's end.

Ninety-nine patients (mean age, 61.5 ± 12.7 yr; 64 men) underwent primary PCI. Microvascular perfusion was optimal in 69 patients (69.7%) and was associated with lower peaks of …

Eptifibatide-Induced Thrombocytopenia: With Thrombosis And Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation Immediately After Left Main Coronary Artery Percutaneous Coronary Angioplasty, Michael W Tempelhof, Keith H Benzuly, Dan Fintel, Marc Z Krichavsky Jan 2012

Eptifibatide-Induced Thrombocytopenia: With Thrombosis And Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation Immediately After Left Main Coronary Artery Percutaneous Coronary Angioplasty, Michael W Tempelhof, Keith H Benzuly, Dan Fintel, Marc Z Krichavsky

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Early clinical trials of eptifibatide did not show a significant association between eptifibatide and the development of thrombocytopenia, thrombosis, or disseminated intravascular coagulation. However, more recent literature has suggested a significant association between eptifibatide and the development of thrombocytopenia and thrombosis. Although the true incidence and the pathophysiology of these associations are unknown, the development of these events can be life-threatening. Herein, we describe the case of a patient who experienced acute onset of profound thrombocytopenia, developing thrombosis, pulmonary emboli, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. This paper adds to the few previous reports of cases that suggested an association between thrombocytopenia, …

Scale And Justice In Water Allocation, Marian J. Patrick Jan 2012

Scale And Justice In Water Allocation, Marian J. Patrick

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Water allocation is a fundamental part of water resources management. Water allocation is often a contested process because it involves multiple uses and users of water. Issues of justice arise when resources are, or are perceived to be, in short supply. When water is allocated the rules for the distribution of the resource may result in just outcomes for some stakeholders but may create injustices for other stakeholders. Issues of scale thus form an important component of water allocation. This thesis draws from an amalgam of ideas on justice, scale and water management and aims to present a conceptual framework …

Development Of Capillary Electrophoresis For The Analysis Of Phenolics And Glucoraphanin In Brassica Oleracea, Iris Lee

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has been used increasingly more over the last decade in the area of food analysis. Numerous food products and food components have been analysed using this technique because of its high efficiency and short separation times. However, the inherent lack of detection sensitivity in CE combined with the complex matrices present in many food samples, especially those of plant origins, is one of the contributing factors to the limited development on CE in this particular area of food analysis. In this project, the potential of CE as a tool in the analysis of vegetables belonging to the …

Finite Element Analysis Of Stress Distribution Within Metal-On-Metal Joint Replacements, Yujing Liu Jan 2012

Finite Element Analysis Of Stress Distribution Within Metal-On-Metal Joint Replacements, Yujing Liu

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Demand for joint replacements is rising in Australia, driven by a sharp increase in the number of joint problems associated with population aging and obesity. In artificial joints, delamination or failure within the coatings occurs when the stress reaches a critical level, resulting in large wear debris particles appearing on the contact surface between the head and the cup. The process has been described as due to a stress-corrosion-cracking mechanism. Under the same loading, stress increases when the contact area decreases, which happens in the vicinity of wear debris. As such, once wear debris is generated, a catastrophic process could …

Geostatistical Methods For Estimating Iron, Silica And Alumina Grades Within The Hardcap Of The Section Seven Iron Deposit, Tom Price, Philip John Savory Jan 2012

Geostatistical Methods For Estimating Iron, Silica And Alumina Grades Within The Hardcap Of The Section Seven Iron Deposit, Tom Price, Philip John Savory

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Many iron ore deposits have a weathered zone (Hardcap) near the surface which is highly variable in grades. Estimating the amount of ore grade material (HG) in this zone is difficult as a result of this variability. The Section Seven Deposit at Tom Price is largely mined out and has production data available in the form of grade blocks that were marked out during mining as HG and non- HG. Hardcap domains and a block model representing them were created and estimates were made from original exploration data using Ordinary Kriging, Global Change of Support, Indicator Kriging and Median Indicator …

Portraits Of Nursing Resilience: Listening For A Story, Vicki Cope Jan 2012

Portraits Of Nursing Resilience: Listening For A Story, Vicki Cope

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The nursing workforce in Australia is a workforce under pressure. Within in-patient settings, rapidly increasing turnover of more acutely ill or co-morbid patients, and staff retention issues, place those staff that remain under extra pressure to maintain a quality service. In nurse education settings the increasing imperative to recruit more students into the profession combined with financial cutbacks leading to staff retention issues creates a similar tension. Yet many Registered Nurses (RNs) do remain in their chosen work setting displaying tenacity and resilience despite well documented trials and tribulations.

A qualitative approach, Portraiture, was used to construct a collection of …
