Suboptimal Health: A New Health Dimension For Translational Medicine, Wei Wang, Yuxian Yan Jan 2012

Suboptimal Health: A New Health Dimension For Translational Medicine, Wei Wang, Yuxian Yan

Research outputs 2012

Background One critical premise of disease-related biomarkers is the definition of the counterpart normality. Contrary to pre-clinical models that can be carefully tailored according to scientific need, heterogeneity and uncontrollability is the essence of humans in health studies. Fully characterization of consistent parameters that define the normal population is the basis to individual differences normalization irrelevant to a given disease process. Self claimed normal status may not represent health because asymptomatic subjects may carry chronic diseases or diseases at their early stage such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Methods This paper exemplifies the characterization of the suboptimal health status (SHS) …

Sirtuin-1 Mediates The Obesity Induced Risk Of Common Degenerative Diseases: Alzheimer's Disease, Coronary Artery Disease And Type 2 Diabetes, Ian Martins, Andrea Wilson, Wei Ling Lim, Simon Laws, Stephanie Fuller, Ralph Martins

Research outputs 2012

Obesity, especially at mid-life, is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome, which in turn contrib- ute to coronary artery disease (CAD), Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The rise in overweight and obesity in all societies is prompting intense research into the causes and effects of the condition. Obesity disrupts many body systems including glucose and lipid me- tabolism, circadian rhythms and liver function. It also causes or increases inflammation and oxi- dative stress. Within cells, the endoplasmic re- ticulum (ER) appears to be particularly suscep- tible to such metabolic disruption. Sirtuin 1 …

Modular Dynamic Rbf Neural Network For Face Recognition, Sue Inn Ch'ng, Kah Phooi Seng, Li-Minn Ang Jan 2012

Modular Dynamic Rbf Neural Network For Face Recognition, Sue Inn Ch'ng, Kah Phooi Seng, Li-Minn Ang

Research outputs 2012

Over the years, we have seen an increase in the use of RBF neural networks for the task of face recognition. However, the use of second order algorithms as the learning algorithm for all the adjustable parameters in such networks are rare due to the high computational complexity of the calculation of the Jacobian and Hessian matrix. Hence, in this paper, we propose a modular structural training architecture to adapt the Levenberg-Marquardt based RBF neural network for the application of face recognition. In addition to the proposal of the modular structural training architecture, we have also investigated the use of …

Performance Of Termite-Hill Routing Algorithm On Sink Mobility In Wireless Sensor Networks, Adamu M Zungeru, Li-Minn Ang, Kah Phooi Seng Jan 2012

Performance Of Termite-Hill Routing Algorithm On Sink Mobility In Wireless Sensor Networks, Adamu M Zungeru, Li-Minn Ang, Kah Phooi Seng

Research outputs 2012

High efficient and energy-aware routing is an important issue for the design of resource constrained environments like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Many protocols have been developed for WSN that try to overcome the constraints that characterized this type of networks. Termite based routing protocols can add a significant contribution to assist in the maximization of the network lifetime without performance degradation. But this is only possible by means of an adaptable and balanced algorithm that takes into account the main constraints of WSN. This paper presents a biological inspired self-organized routing protocol for WSN which is based on termite colony …

Beyond The Private Attorney General: Equality Directives In American Law, Olatunde C.A. Johnson Jan 2012

Beyond The Private Attorney General: Equality Directives In American Law, Olatunde C.A. Johnson

Faculty Scholarship

American civil rights regulation is generally understood as relying on private enforcement in courts rather than imposing positive duties on state actors to further equity goals. This Article argues that this dominant conception of American civil rights regulation is incomplete. American civil rights regulation also contains a set of "equality directives," whose emergence and reach in recent years have gone unrecognized in the commentary. These federal-level equality directives use administrative tools of conditioned spending, policymaking, and oversight powerfully to promote substantive inclusion with regard to race, ethnicity, language, and disability. These directives move beyond the constraints of the standard private …

Fiscal Policy In An Era Of Austerity, David M. Schizer Jan 2012

Fiscal Policy In An Era Of Austerity, David M. Schizer

Faculty Scholarship

We face a time of stagnant economic growth, severe unemployment, massive budget deficits, and an increasingly competitive global economy. These daunting challenges are the legacy of a number of unwise policy decisions in both the public and private sectors. Although the good news is that unsound policies can be changed, the bad news is that no single step will do the trick. It is a challenge to rely on monetary policy when interest rates are near zero. There also is uncertainty – and a heated debate among economists – about the effectiveness of a Keynesian stimulus. One thing we know …

The Health And Housing Specialist: An Emerging Job Classification To Support Aging In Place In Subsidized Housing, Paula C. Carder, Jenny Weinstein, Jacklyn Nicole Kohon

Institute on Aging Publications

As the U.S. population ages, the availability of workers with a basic understanding of aging and health-related services has not kept pace. This is true in traditional health care organizations such as hospitals and primary care clinics as well as in long-term care settings and senior housing, including subsidized housing, the focus of this report. Nearly 1.8 million older persons receive some form of publicly-subsidized rental assistance. Some subsidized housing providers, including those that operate buildings designated for older persons, are developing new systems of service delivery that would either coordinate or provide health screenings, physical activity programs, nutrition programs, …

International Competition For Satellite-Based Navigation System Services, Robert F. Donnelly Jan 2012

International Competition For Satellite-Based Navigation System Services, Robert F. Donnelly

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this work is to review the current state of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) development and its potential impact on the social, economic, and political dynamics of the various states fielding the systems. The most recognizable GNSS is the US GPS. It is the only operational system functioning at the time of this writing and has become part of the global commons. GPS, by virtue of its uniqueness, is considered the 'gold standard' of satellite based positioning, navigation, and timing systems. This uniqueness has also enabled the US to fully capitalize on the sizable economic dividends gained …

Effect Of Solar Disinfestation And Purdue Improved Crop Storage Bagging The Control Of Prostephanus Truncatus Horn In Maize, Anastasia Wanjiru Njoroge Jan 2012

Effect Of Solar Disinfestation And Purdue Improved Crop Storage Bagging The Control Of Prostephanus Truncatus Horn In Maize, Anastasia Wanjiru Njoroge

All Master’s Theses

This work demonstrates how an integrated approach can be used for controlling Larger Grain Borer (Prostephanus truncatus) in maize (Zea mays L.) using solar disinfestation followed by hermetic storage in Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags. PICS bags work by sealing grains in an airtight environment for long-term pest-free storage. In order to provide safe food with no inputs of chemical pesticides, the combination of solar disinfestation and the PICS bagging is likely to be a promising integrated approach for controlling P. truncatus. The first experiment of this work was the heat disinfestation experiment. The aim of this experiment was …

Identification Of Kairomones Mediating Interactions Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae With Its Host Plants, Vincent Odhiambo Nyasembe Jan 2012

Identification Of Kairomones Mediating Interactions Of The Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae With Its Host Plants, Vincent Odhiambo Nyasembe

All Master’s Theses

Malaria remains a major health problem in africa, with anopheles gambiae giles as the principle vector. Plant nectar feeding forms an integral part of the vectorial capacity of this mosquito species, yet paucity of information on the nature of this behaviour persists. While it is recognized that olfactory cues play an important role in mediating orientation and attraction of mosquitoes to host plants as sources of sugar, little effort has been made to identify the kairomones involved in this behaviour. This study sought to investigate the effect of plasmodium falciparum welch infection on the mosquitoes-plant interactions and to identify kairomones …

Research And Development Of A Weighted Most Recent Common Ancester Algorithm For Metagenomic Taxonomic Assignment, Hellen Butungi Jan 2012

Research And Development Of A Weighted Most Recent Common Ancester Algorithm For Metagenomic Taxonomic Assignment, Hellen Butungi

All Master’s Theses

The new generation of metagenomics has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. This has been majorly due to rapid advances in DNA sequencing technology, which has produced large amounts of sequence data in relatively shorter times, compared to conventional DNA sequencing methods. There is a need to taxonomically characterise these data by assigning individual sequence reads to their constituent taxa. However, there is lack of up-to-date and customized software tools to accomplish this task, and for taxonomic characterisation, an automated taxonomic classification scheme is necessary. The overall objective of this study was to improve the accuracy of the most recent …
