Control Of 1,4-Anthraquinone Crystal Growth, Tyler Holm Nov 2012

Control Of 1,4-Anthraquinone Crystal Growth, Tyler Holm

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Quinones are widely found in nature, used in chemistry and medicine, and are just beginning to gain importance in materials engineering. In order to harvest their potential as an ordered or highly crystalline solid, their crystal formation processes need to be well investigated and controlled.

We chose 1,4-anthraquinone, a commercially available type of quinone, as a model compound to study its crystal growth behavior. These crystals were deposited through evaporation of a solution containing the anthraquinone and were subsequently studied through microscopy and various other methods. The effects of solvent variation, temperature, and impurities on crystal growth were all explored. …

Ubiquity Of Data And Model Fusion: From Geophysics And Environmental Sciences To Estimating Individual Risk During An Epidemic, Omar Ochoa, Aline Jaimes, Christian Servin, Craig Tweedie, Aaron Velasco, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2012

Ubiquity Of Data And Model Fusion: From Geophysics And Environmental Sciences To Estimating Individual Risk During An Epidemic, Omar Ochoa, Aline Jaimes, Christian Servin, Craig Tweedie, Aaron Velasco, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we need to combine the results of measuring a local value of a certain quantity with results of measuring average values of this same quantity. For example, in geosciences, we need to combine the seismic models (which describe density at different locations and depths) with gravity models which describe density averaged over certain regions. Similarly, in estimating the risk of an epidemic to an individual, we need to combine probabilities describe the risk to people of the corresponding age group, to people of the corresponding geographical region, etc. In this paper, we provide general techniques for …

A Learner-Centered Diabetes Management Curriculum, Daniel J. Salvo, Larrie W. Greenberg, Celia L. Henderson, Fran R. Cogen Nov 2012

A Learner-Centered Diabetes Management Curriculum, Daniel J. Salvo, Larrie W. Greenberg, Celia L. Henderson, Fran R. Cogen

Medicine Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE

Diabetes errors, particularly insulin administration errors, can lead to complications and death in the pediatric inpatient setting. Despite a lecture-format curriculum on diabetes management at our children’s hospital, resident diabetes-related errors persisted. We hypothesized that a multifaceted, learner-centered diabetes curriculum would help reduce pathway errors.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

The 8-week curricular intervention consisted of 1) an online tutorial addressing residents’ baseline diabetes management knowledge, 2) an interactive diabetes pathway discussion, 3) a learner-initiated diabetes question and answer session, and 4) a case presentation featuring embedded pathway errors for residents to recognize, resolve, and prevent. …

Network Facilitation And Social Capital, Toran Hansen Nov 2012

Network Facilitation And Social Capital, Toran Hansen

Peace and Conflict Studies

This paper empirically demonstrates that networks of organizations working together can be facilitated by individual network members, even when no facilitators are formally designated by the network members. Regression analyses also revealed statistically significant relationships between the frequency that facilitation functions were facilitated in the inter-organizational network studied and both the level of trust that the network members had for their inter-organizational network and the level of work coordination experienced by the members of the network. These two dependent variables were utilized as indicators of social capital, which was therefore found to be enhanced by inter-organizational network facilitation in this …

Medicaid Coverage For Individuals In Jail Pending Disposition: Opportunities For Improved Health And Health Care At Lower Costs, Marsha Regenstein, Jade Christie-Maples

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides an unprecedented opportunity for millions of poor men and women to obtain insurance coverage to address their substantial acute, chronic, physical and behavioral health care needs. The ACA raises Medicaid eligibility levels to 133 percent of poverty, thereby enabling adults with or without children to qualify for coverage. A substantial percentage of the newly eligible population will be jail-involved individuals – people who have had interactions with the legal system over the course of a year, including as an inmate at a county or city jail. Many of these individuals are …

Comparison Of Need And Supply Of Syringes For Therapeutic Injections In Pakistan, Adnan Ahmad Khan, Momina Saleem, Huma Qureshi, Rashid Jooma, Ayesha Khan

Section of Neurosurgery

Objectives: To determine the extent of shortfall in syringes by measuring the need from nationally validated sources and comparing it with position on the supply side. This was done in order to contribute to the ongoing national discussions that have focused on increasing syringe supply to curtail syringe reuse.
Methods: Using 'Injections received' data from the Pakistan Demographic Health Survey 2006-7 (N: 5429) and the National Hepatitis Survey (N: 47,043), the study estimated the number of injections received in Pakistan. We matched these against the local syringe production figures from the syringe manufacturers' association and import figures from the Federal …

Clinical And Genetic Association Of Serum Paraoxonase And Arylesterase Activities With Cardiovascular Risk, W.H. Wilson Tang, Jaana Hartiala, Yiying Fan, Yuping Wu, Alexandre F.R. Stewart, Jeanette Erdmann, Sekar Kathiresan, Cardiogram Consortium, Lerner Research Institute, Robert Roberts, Ruth Mcpherson, Hooman Allayee, Stanley L. Hazen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Objective—Diminished serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities (measures of paraoxonase-1 [PON-1] function) in humans have been linked to heightened systemic oxidative stress and atherosclerosis risk. The clinical prognostic use of measuring distinct PON-1 activities has not been established, and the genetic determinants of PON-1 activities are not known. Methods and Results—We established analytically robust high-throughput assays for serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities and measured these in 3668 stable subjects undergoing elective coronary angiography without acute coronary syndrome and were prospectively followed for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE= death, myocardial infarction, stroke) over 3 years. Low serum arylesterase and paraoxonase activities were …

Prognostic Role Of Pulmonary Arterial Capacitance In Advanced Heart Failure, Matthias Dupont, Wilfried Mullens, Hadi N. Skouri, Zuheir Abrahams, Yuping Wu, David O. Taylor, Randall C. Starling, W.H. Wilson Tang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Background—Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction frequently occurs and independently prognosticates in left-sided heart failure. It is not clear which RV afterload measure has the greatest impact on RV function and prognosis. We examined the determinants, prognostic role, and response to treatment of pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC, ratio of stroke volume over pulmonary pulse pressure), in relation to pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in heart failure. Methods and Results—We reviewed 724 consecutive patients with heart failure who underwent right heart catheterization between 2000 and 2005. Changes in PAC were explored in an independent cohort of 75 subjects treated for acute decompensated heart failure. …

This comment will focus on bi-national same-sex couples who are forced to expatriate from the united states to canada because of DOMA’s detrimental effects on their relationship. more specifically, part I focuses on DOMA’s constitutionality, effects on bi-national same-sex couples, and current legal challenges. Part II provides a historical analysis of the united states’ attitude towards same-sex unions before describing current legislation regarding same-sex couples. Part III describes canada’s recognition of same-sex marriage and support of immigration equality, comparing and contrasting the canadian approach with the united states’ approach. Part IV explains the current legal and financial issues that bi-national …

Empowering Change: The Effects Of Energy Provision On Individual Aspirations In Slum Communities, Priti Parikh, Sankalp Chaturvedi, Gerard George Nov 2012

Empowering Change: The Effects Of Energy Provision On Individual Aspirations In Slum Communities, Priti Parikh, Sankalp Chaturvedi, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper discusses the role of energy provision in influencing the social aspirations of people living in slums. We examine factors that influence the shift in aspirations in five slum settlements using data from 500 interviews conducted in serviced and non-serviced slums from the state of Gujarat in India. The non-serviced slums did not have access to basic services namely water, sanitation, energy, roads, solid waste and rainwater management. We find empirical evidence which suggests that when basic infrastructure provisions are met, slum dwellers shift their focus from lower order aspirations to the higher order aspirations like health, education, housing …

Neuronal Synaptobrevin Promotes Longevity In Drosophila Photoreceptors, Mejia Jonathan, Adam Haberman Nov 2012

Neuronal Synaptobrevin Promotes Longevity In Drosophila Photoreceptors, Mejia Jonathan, Adam Haberman

Biology: Faculty Scholarship

Neurons have unique challenges relative to other cell types. Unlike most other cells, neurons must remain healthy and functional throughout the lifespan of an animal. Premature neuronal loss underlies many age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer and Parkinson Diseases. Despite previous research aimed at understanding the mechanisms of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, little is known about the mechanisms that allow neurons to remain functional for the lifetime of a healthy animal. Understanding these cellular and biochemical processes is essential to promote healthful aging and reduce the severity of neurodegenerative disease. Here we discuss our recent identification of neuron-specific proteins that regulate endosome …

The Labor Supply And Welfare Effects Of Early Access To Medicare Through Social Security Disability Insurance, Kim Nov 2012

The Labor Supply And Welfare Effects Of Early Access To Medicare Through Social Security Disability Insurance, Kim

Research Collection School Of Economics

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries receive a cash benefit and become eligible for health insurance from Medicare two years after their enrollment. Disabled workers who leave the labor force typically lose health insurance from their employers, and they face significant medical expenditure risk as a result of their disability. Therefore, access to Medicare makes SSDI an especially attractive alternative to remaining employed for workers with disabilities. My research is the first to analyze the importance of medical expenditure risk and Medicare in analysis of SSDI, and it addresses the following questions: (1) How does access to Medicare via SSDI …

Hepokoski And Darcy's Haydn, Alexander Ludwig Nov 2012

Hepokoski And Darcy's Haydn, Alexander Ludwig

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Alexander Ludwig asserts that Hepokoski and Darcy's Elements of Sonata Theory: Norms, Types, and Deformations in the Late Eighteenth-Century Sonata unduly marginalizes Haydn's music by persistently labeling it as witty, humorous or deformational. Ludwig suggests two modifications to this sonata theory that would make it a more historically accurate tool for considering Haydn's music, and by extension a more faithful representation of the body of eighteenth-century instrumental music.
