An Assessment Of The Hospitalization Rates And Associated Comorbid Conditions In Secondary Stroke Prevention, Andrea D. Boan Jan 2012

An Assessment Of The Hospitalization Rates And Associated Comorbid Conditions In Secondary Stroke Prevention, Andrea D. Boan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: An inherent risk from an incident stroke is recurrence. The most effective method to reduce stroke risk is to reduce the incidence of hypertension. Thus, antihypertension therapy has become imperative in the prevention of primary and recurrent stroke. In this dissertation we examine the confounding effects of race and age on recurrent stroke risk and the consistency of secondary prevention treatment regimens. Methods: One-year recurrent stroke risk was determined in relation to race, age, gender, and comorbid hypertension and diabetes by mixed effects regression and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses among hospitalized patients in South Carolina. A subset of patients were …

Faculty Publications

Monitoring of fatigue cracking in steel bridges is of high interest to many bridge owners and agencies. Due to the variety of deterioration sources and locations of bridge defects, there is currently no single method that can detect and address the potential sources globally. In this paper, we presented a dual mode sensing methodology integrating acoustic emission and ultrasonic wave inspection based on the use of low-profile piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS). After introducing the research background and piezoelectric sensing principles, PWAS crack detection in passive acoustic emission mode is first presented. Their acoustic emission detection capability has been validated …

Hello, I Love You, Won’T You Tell Me Your Name?: An Anthropological Investigation Of Naming, Haley Lisa Close Jan 2012

Hello, I Love You, Won’T You Tell Me Your Name?: An Anthropological Investigation Of Naming, Haley Lisa Close

Senior Independent Study Theses

This study investigates how parents select the names of their children. Anthropological research on naming is very sparse, despite the immense power of names to reflect cultural variables, such as: kinship, gender relations, socioeconomic class relations, and differences in taste and personal preference. I surveyed a sample of parents at three daycare facilities in a small town in the Midwest about their children’s names and how they chose those names. My findings indicate that kin naming plays a significant role, but many parents find a balance between choosing a name with “meaning” and choosing a name based on their personal …

Abuse, Mediation And The Catholic Church: How Enforcing And Improving Existing Statutes Will Help Victims Recover, Jeffrey Pruzan

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of religious figures is an epidemic that has spread throughout the United States and abroad.' In the United States alone, U.S. bishops have reported receiving allegations of abuse committed by 6,115 Catholic priests, or 5.6 percent of the 109,694 active U.S. priests since 1950. The U.S. bishops also reported receiving allegations from 15,235 victims, or 2.6 victims per priest; however, this figure is universally acknowledged to be low. Some estimates put the number of victims in the United States at over 280,000.

The Role Of The Microenvironment And Th17 Cells In The Carcinogenesis Of Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Danielle Woodford

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, the survival rates for patients with head and neck cancer have remained relatively unchanged for the past 30 years. Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma is a highly aggressive malignancy with a 5-year survival rate of only 50%. Of the patients diagnosed every year, 5% of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients develop additional primary tumors, an effect that is thought to be associated with the high degree of immune suppression induced by the tumor. During the premalignant stage of HNSCC, …

Lygus hesperus (western tarnished plant bug) is an agronomically important pest species of numerous cropping systems. Similar to other insects, a critical component underlying behaviors is the perception and discrimination of olfactory cues. Consequently, the molecular basis of olfaction in this species is of interest. To begin to address this issue, we utilized homology-based PCR as a commonly accepted abbreviation but if necessary it is polymerase chain reaction methods to identify the L. hesperus olfactory receptor co-receptor (Orco) ortholog, a receptor that has been shown to be essential for olfaction. The L. hesperus Orco (LhOrco) shares significant sequence homology with …

Offspring of a highly inbred gynogenetic line of Oreochromis aureus displayed 12-fold increase in twinning rate compared to the outbred population. Asymmetric conjoined twins, which consist of a normal embryo attached to a malformed-atrophic twin, were frequently encountered in both gynogenetic (90·7%) and outbred (38·2%) embryos. The monozygotic origin of these twins was determined using five microsatellite markers. Progeny of heterozygous parents for the microsatellite UNH159 were separated into sub-sets of twins and normal full-sibs. Consistent with previous reports, the normal embryo sub-set exhibited elimination of both types of homozygotes for the UNH159 genetic marker at 2–8 days after fertilization. …

Temporal Flux And Spatial Dynamics Of Nutrients, Fecal Indicators, And Zoonotic Pathogens In Anaerobic Swine Manure Lagoon Water, Michael R. Mclaughlin, John P. Brooks, Ardeshir Adeli

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) often use anaerobic lagoons for manure treatment. In the USA, swine CAFO lagoon water is used for crop irrigation that is regulated by farm-specific nutrient management plans (NMPs). Implementation of stricter US environmental regulations in 2013 will set soil P limits; impacting land applications of manure and requiring revision of NMPs. Precise knowledge of lagoon water quality is needed for formulating NMPs, for understanding losses of N and C in ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions, and for understanding risks of environmental contamination by fecal bacteria, including zoonotic pathogens. In this study we determined year-round levels …

Genetic Diversity In Wild And Cultivated Black Raspberry (Rubus Occidentalis L.) Evaluated By Simple Sequence Repeat Markers, Michael Dossett, Nahla V. Bassil, Kim S. Lewers, Chad E. Finn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Breeding progress in black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis L.) has been limited by a lack of genetic diversity in elite germplasm. Black raspberry cultivars have been noted for showing very few phenotypic differences and seedlings from crosses between cultivars for a lack of segregation for important traits. Despite these challenges, little molecular work has been done to explore genetic diversity and relationships in wild and cultivated black raspberry germplasm. Microsatellite, or simple sequence repeat (SSR), markers are highly polymorphic codominant markers useful for studying genetic diversity, population genetics, genetic fingerprinting and other applications. We examined genetic diversity in 148 wild …
