Simulating Molecular Mechanisms Of The Mdm2-Mediated Regulatory Interactions: A Conformational Selection Model Of The Mdm2 Lid Dynamics, Gennady M. Verkhivker Jan 2012

Simulating Molecular Mechanisms Of The Mdm2-Mediated Regulatory Interactions: A Conformational Selection Model Of The Mdm2 Lid Dynamics, Gennady M. Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Diversity and complexity of MDM2 mechanisms govern its principal function as the cellular antagonist of the p53 tumor suppressor. Structural and biophysical studies have demonstrated that MDM2 binding could be regulated by the dynamics of a pseudo-substrate lid motif. However, these experiments and subsequent computational studies have produced conflicting mechanistic models of MDM2 function and dynamics. We propose a unifying conformational selection model that can reconcile experimental findings and reveal a fundamental role of the lid as a dynamic regulator of MDM2-mediated binding. In this work, structure, dynamics and energetics of apo-MDM2 are studied as a function of posttranslational modifications …

Incurable Blackness: Criminal Disenfranchisement, Mental Disability, And The White Citizen, Andrew Dilts Jan 2012

Incurable Blackness: Criminal Disenfranchisement, Mental Disability, And The White Citizen, Andrew Dilts

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

The Maryland State Constitution states that its General Assembly may, "regulate or prohibit the right to vote of a person convicted of infamous or other serious crime or under care or guardianship for mental disability." In a single sentence, the link between criminality and mental disability is invoked in order to draw an internal boundary around those who can take part in the project of representative government. Through a close reading of one particular moment in the history of Maryland's disenfranchisement provisions, I show how these restrictions could buttress prevailing racial hierarchies. Delegates to Maryland's nineteenth century constitutional conventions explicitly …

How Drunk Am I? Misperceiving One’S Level Of Intoxication In The College Drinking Environment, Sean Grant, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Andrew Lac

Heads Up!

Objective

One effective event-level index that can assist in identifying risky intoxication levels among college students is blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Despite widespread exposure to BAC information, doubt exists as to whether American college students can accurately estimate their own BAC level or drinking behaviors while intoxicated. This study assessed whether students can accurately guesstimate their BAC level (gBAC) and drinking behaviors used to estimate BAC (eBAC) while drinking in social college settings

Method

Participants (N = 225; 56.4% male) consisted of emerging adults attending either a two- or four-year college who had at least one alcoholic drink within …

What Is Urban Environmental Stewardship? Constructing A Practitioner-Derived Framework, Michele Romolini, W. Brinkley, K. L. Wolf

Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship

Agencies and organizations deploy various strategies in response to environmental challenges, including the formulation of policy, programs, and regulations. Citizen-based environmental stewardship is increasingly seen as an innovative and important approach to improving and conserving landscape health. A new research focus on the stewardship of urban natural resources is being launched by the U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest region. Early scoping efforts are addressing various scales of human systems ranging from individuals to organizations to the entire positive “footprint” of stewardship on the land. This report addresses a fundamental need—to understand and describe civic environmental stewardship in urban …

"Don't Drop The Soap": Organizing Sexualities In The Repeal Of The Us Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy, Craig Rich, Julie Kalil Schutten, Richard A. Rogers Jan 2012

"Don't Drop The Soap": Organizing Sexualities In The Repeal Of The Us Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Policy, Craig Rich, Julie Kalil Schutten, Richard A. Rogers

Communication Studies Faculty Works

Guided by critical, feminist, and queer approaches to organizational communication, this paper critically analyzes the United States military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) policy and the Department of Defense's (2010) report recommending DADT's repeal. Rather than fostering genuine integration, the repeal report reproduces the conditions that marginalize queer soldiers under DADT, relegating gays and lesbians to the hyper-private (closet) while constructing an asexual veneer for the military organization. Such closeting remains necessary due to the threat that "openly" gay men pose to the image of the soldier as an impenetrable predator. Finally, the recommendation to deny sexual orientation the status …

Investigating The Effect Of System Pressure On Trihalomethane Post-Treatment Diffused Aeration, John M. Zwerneman Jan 2012

Investigating The Effect Of System Pressure On Trihalomethane Post-Treatment Diffused Aeration, John M. Zwerneman

Master's Theses and Capstones

The current study has obtained removal data for the four major trihalomethanes (chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform) in a bench-scale, batch diffused aeration reactor under system pressures of 0-, 25-, 50-, and 70-psig. The removal data for each pressure was compared, and it is clear that trihalomethane air-stripping removals decrease with increasing system pressure.

Trihalomethane removal data was also collected for a bench-scale, continuous-flow diffused aeration reactor at pressures of 25-psi and 50-psi. A similar decrease in removals was observed at higher pressures for the continuous-flow system.

A model was formulated that predicts Henry's Law Constant for each trihalomethane at …

Multi-Protein Detection Of Endothelial Cell Inflammation And Single Cells' Heterogeneity Study, Jingwen Chai Jan 2012

Multi-Protein Detection Of Endothelial Cell Inflammation And Single Cells' Heterogeneity Study, Jingwen Chai

Master's Theses and Capstones

Endothelial inflammation plays major roles in all phases of atherosclerotic process and both innate immunity and endothelial adhesion molecules contribute to endothelial inflammation. In this thesis, there are three main parts regarding the endothelial cell inflammation and multiple protein detection. In the first part, we applied multiple antibodies (Abs) to measure changes in expression levels of six proteins in response to inflammatory stimulation, and we observed different dynamic behaviors in them. In the second part, we applied emission fingerprinting technique provided by Zeiss LSM 510 META detector, and achieved the concurrent detection of ten proteins expressed on the same endothelial …

Participants' lives were affected by marriage in …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Wildlife Ordinances As A Management Tool For Reducing Human-Bear Conflicts In New Hampshire, Jaclyn Virginia Comeau Jan 2012

Assessing The Efficacy Of Wildlife Ordinances As A Management Tool For Reducing Human-Bear Conflicts In New Hampshire, Jaclyn Virginia Comeau

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study evaluated the effectiveness of wildlife ordinances to address human-bear conflicts in New Hampshire by assessing their ability to reduce reported conflicts, achieve public support, and reduce the availability of anthropogenic attractants, ultimately reducing conflicts. Six towns in northern New Hampshire were used to make these evaluations; 3 with ordinances (Lincoln, Franconia, and Gorham) and 3 without (Bartlett, Lancaster, and Whitefield). The number of reported human-bear conflicts were compared between pre- and post-ordinance years in ordinance towns, a mail/online survey was sent to landowners in the 6 towns to assess and compare attitudes towards bears and ordinances, and the …

Metals And Bacteria Partitioning To Various Size Particles In Ballona Creek Storm Water Runoff, John Dorsey, Jeffrey S. Brown, Eric D. Stein, Drew Ackerman, Jessica Lyon, Patrick M. Carter Jan 2012

Metals And Bacteria Partitioning To Various Size Particles In Ballona Creek Storm Water Runoff, John Dorsey, Jeffrey S. Brown, Eric D. Stein, Drew Ackerman, Jessica Lyon, Patrick M. Carter

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Works

Many storm water best management practice (BMP) devices function primarily by capturing particulate matter to take advantage of the well-documented association between storm water particles and pollutants. The hydrodynamic separation or settling methods used by most BMP devices are most effective at capturing medium to large particles; however, these may not be the most predominant particles associated with urban runoff. The present study examined particle size distribution in storm water runoff from an urban watershed in southern California and investigated the pollutant-particle associations of metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn) and bacteria (enterococci and Escherichia coli). During small storm events …

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Osteoporosis is a chronic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass which is currently challenging the American health care system. Maximizing peak bone mass early in life is a cost-effective method for preventing osteoporosis. Whole body vibration (WBV) is a novel exercise method with the potential to increase bone mass, therefore optimizing peak bone and decreasing the risk for osteoporotic fracture. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate changes in bone mineral density at the hip, spine, and whole body in college-age men and women who underwent a WBV training protocol. Active men (n=6) and women (n=4), ages 18-22 …

Body Mass Index Change In Adulthood And Lung And Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancers, Heather Tarleton Jan 2012

Body Mass Index Change In Adulthood And Lung And Upper Aerodigestive Tract Cancers, Heather Tarleton

Health and Human Sciences Faculty Works

Body mass index (BMI) has been inversely associated with lung and upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancers. However, only a few studies have assessed BMI change in adulthood in relation to cancer. To understand the relationship between BMI change and these cancers in both men and women, we analyzed data from a population-based case-control study conducted in Los Angeles County. Adulthood BMI change was measured as the proportional change in BMI between age 21 and 1 year before interview or diagnosis. Five categories of BMI change were included, and individuals with no more than a 5% loss or gain were defined …

Two Types Of Wisdom, Jason Baehr Jan 2012

Two Types Of Wisdom, Jason Baehr

Philosophy Faculty Works

The concept of wisdom is largely ignored by contemporary philosophers. But given recent movements in the fields of ethics and epistemology, the time is ripe for a return to this concept. This article lays some groundwork for further philosophical work in ethics and epistemology on wisdom. Its focus is the distinction between practical wisdom and theoretical wisdom or between phronesis and sophia. Several accounts of this distinction are considered and rejected. A more plausible, but also considerably more complex, account is offered. The discussion sheds light on the relation between practical wisdom and theoretical wisdom, and on the positive …

Role Of Twin Cys-Xaa9-Cys Motif Cysteines In Mitochondrial Import Of The Cytochrome C Oxidase Biogenesis Factor Cmc1, Deepa V. Dabir Jan 2012

Role Of Twin Cys-Xaa9-Cys Motif Cysteines In Mitochondrial Import Of The Cytochrome C Oxidase Biogenesis Factor Cmc1, Deepa V. Dabir

Biology Faculty Works

The Mia40 import pathway facilitates the import and oxidative folding of cysteine-rich protein substrates into the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Here we describe the in vitro and in organello oxidative folding of Cmc1, a twin CX9C-containing substrate, which contains an unpaired cysteine. In vitro, Cmc1 can be oxidized by the import receptor Mia40 alone when in excess or at a lower rate by only the sulfhydryl oxidase Erv1. However, physiological and efficient Cmc1 oxidation requires Erv1 and Mia40. Cmc1 forms a stable intermediate with Mia40 and is released from this interaction in the presence of Erv1. The three proteins are shown …

Parental Efficacy, Experience Of Stressful Life Events, And Child Externalizing Behavior As Predictors Of Filipino Mothers' And Fathers' Parental Hostility And Aggression., Aileen S. Garcia, Liane Peña Alampay

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

This study assessed relations of parental efficacy, experience of stressful life events, and child externalizing behavior to Filipino mothers and fathers’ parental hostility and aggression. Orally-administered surveys were conducted with 117 mothers and 98 fathers for the first year of data collection, and again a year later with 107 mothers and 83 fathers. Path analyses showed that mothers’ report of child externalizing behavior predicted subsequent parental hostility and aggression. For fathers, child externalizing behavior and experience of stressful life events predicted parental hostility and aggression. Additionally, fathers’ parental efficacy was found to moderate the relationship between experience of stressful life …

E Pluribus Urbes: Interest Group Organization’S Effect On The Fragmentation And Governance Of American Urban Areas, Matthew L. Howell Jan 2012

E Pluribus Urbes: Interest Group Organization’S Effect On The Fragmentation And Governance Of American Urban Areas, Matthew L. Howell

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

American cities have proliferated in the post-War era. More than 2,000 new cities were founded between 1950 and 2000. While the history of the local government boom has been documented, research into urban fragmentation has explored why there is no consolidation of metropolitan areas rather than exploring why Americans chose fragmentation initially.

This dissertation proposes that individuals create new jurisdictions because individuals prefer to have governments which give them the services individuals desire, even if they could have similar (but not perfect) services cheaper in a larger jurisdiction. Individuals, however, must balance the benefit they get from better fitting cities …
