Family Friendly Contract Provisions, Estelle Gellman Nov 2012

Family Friendly Contract Provisions, Estelle Gellman

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

As have many other institutions, Hofstra University has been increasingly focused on including family friendly provisions in its contract with faculty. Many factors have contributed to this, including the recognition that it is becoming more difficult for faculty with children to meet the requirements for tenure and promotion.

Unions & Faculty Senates: A Cross-Case Analysis Of Governance Within Private Universities, Carlene Blake Nov 2012

Unions & Faculty Senates: A Cross-Case Analysis Of Governance Within Private Universities, Carlene Blake

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Academic governance within higher education is a complex decision-making

process that creates college and university policies and actions. The interactions

between faculty senates, unions, and administrators have been explored by a number of

models, including collegial, bureaucratic, and political models, as well as senate

structures, but little data is available for private universities.

The governance process was examined at two private universities: Adelphi and

Hofstra. A semistructured interview was constructed to answer questions concerning

perceptions of the senate, faculty union, governance, leadership styles, and power

structures. Thirty participants, 15 from each university, were interviewed. Interviews

were analyzed using the constant …

Restoring Public Support For Public Higher Education, Peter Mercer Nov 2012

Restoring Public Support For Public Higher Education, Peter Mercer

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

This paper discusses rallying public support for financing of public higher education, focusing on four points: First, appeals to sentiment are ineffective and perhaps damaging. Second, the support that counts is financial. Third, the best leverage is provided by parents of students or prospective students. Finally, if we want a different social contract for higher education, we must provide different consideration for that contact.

Pensions At Risk, Retiree Health Benefits At Risk: Retirement At Risk?, Valerie Martin Conley

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

There is mounting evidence to suggest there is cause for concern regarding the ability of pensions to provide the primary source of income in retirement for members of an aging U.S. workforce. Furthermore, the rising cost of health care and changes in accounting rules may put additional strains on the system, resulting in the erosion of retirement as a social institution as we now know it.

Organizing Higher Education In George W. Bush’S Texas, Charles Zucker Nov 2012

Organizing Higher Education In George W. Bush’S Texas, Charles Zucker

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

A few years ago, a delegation of international unionists visited the Texas AFL-CIO for the purpose of learning more about American unions. At some point in the proceedings, the unionists realized that in Texas public sector employees are prohibited from bargaining collectively.1 In particular, several members of the delegation from third-world countries were shocked to discover that their public-sector counterparts could not bargain collectively in Texas. They had assumed that all public employees in the United States enjoyed bargaining rights. When the meeting had ended, they expressed great sympathy for their union brothers and sisters in Texas and offered their …

The Struggle For Resources In Illinois, Sue Kaufman Nov 2012

The Struggle For Resources In Illinois, Sue Kaufman

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Being a journalist by profession words mean a lot to me, and when I look at the word struggle I see a great deal of energy being expended by people attempting to get something they believe they need. Struggles, like the tango, generally take at least two participants. Struggles can be internal or external, but generally speaking they take up a whole lot of self-directed energy. And, while all that energy and time are being expended, there's a whole lot going on in other venues that our strugglers are of necessity pretty oblivious to. Struggles often mean that two or …

Toward A Fusion Of Theological Horizons: Constructivist Reflections And Responses To The Question Of Theism In The Yoga Sutra, Graham M. Schweig Nov 2012

Toward A Fusion Of Theological Horizons: Constructivist Reflections And Responses To The Question Of Theism In The Yoga Sutra, Graham M. Schweig

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

IT is important to explore and disclose how--perhaps even why--we are going to speak about Christian and Yogic theism before conducting an exploration on theism in comparative relation between the two traditions. In this kind of discussion, it is inevitable that working definitions of key terms be provided, particular terms that will be clarified and offered to facilitate the discussion. In this study, I examine and draw from the particular studies of three scholars in the field who address the relationship between Christianity and Yoga in order to illuminate the dialectical tension between a resistence toward and the persistence of …

The Malleability Of Yoga: A Response To Christian And Hindu Opponents Of The Popularization Of Yoga, Andrea R. Jain Nov 2012

The Malleability Of Yoga: A Response To Christian And Hindu Opponents Of The Popularization Of Yoga, Andrea R. Jain

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

FOR over three thousand years, people have attached divergent meanings and functions to yoga. Its history has been characterized by moments of continuity, but also by divergence and change. This applies as much to precolonial yoga systems as to modern ones. All of this evidences yoga’s malleability (literally, the capacity to be bent into new shapes without breaking) in the hands of human beings.

Stomatal Frequency, Distribution, And Needle Hydrophobicity In Cloud Forest Spruce And Fir, Southern Appalachian Mountains, Jennifer E. Reed, William K. Smith Nov 2012

Stomatal Frequency, Distribution, And Needle Hydrophobicity In Cloud Forest Spruce And Fir, Southern Appalachian Mountains, Jennifer E. Reed, William K. Smith

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and Fraser fir, [Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir] are two species of conifer trees that dominate the mountaintop spruce-fir forests of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, USA, a community that is considered a boreal remnant of the last glacial maximum. Their persistence has been attributed, at least partially, to the frequent cloud immersion that matches the distribution pattern of these remnant boreal species. Although fundamental to photosynthetic carbon uptake and growth, little is known in general about stomatal morphology or behavior in cloud-immersed, conifer forest species, although immersion has been hypothesized as facilitating carbon dioxide …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-11-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Several Steps/Day Indicators Predict Changes In Anthropometric Outcomes: Hub City Steps, Jessica L. Thompson, Alicia S. Landry, Jamie M. Zoellner, Catrine Tudor-Locke, Michael Webster, Carol L. Connell, Kathy Yadrick

Background: Walking for exercise remains the most frequently reported leisure-time activity, likely because it is simple, inexpensive, and easily incorporated into most people's lifestyle. Pedometers are simple, convenient, and economical tools that can be used to quantify step-determined physical activity. Few studies have attempted to define the direct relationship between dynamic changes in pedometer-determined steps/day and changes in anthropometric and clinical outcomes. Hence, the objective of this secondary analysis was to evaluate the utility of several descriptive indicators of pedometer-determined steps/day for predicting changes in anthropometric and clinical outcomes using data from a community-based walking intervention, HUB City Steps, conducted …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: Use of multivitamin supplements during the pre-HAART era has been found to reduce viral load, enhance immune response, and generally improve clinical outcomes among HIV-infected adults. However, immune reconstitution is incomplete and significant mortality and opportunistic infections occur in spite of HAART. There is insufficient research information on whether multivitamin supplementation may be beneficial as adjunct therapy for HIV-infected individuals taking HAART. We propose to evaluate the efficacy of a single recommended daily allowance (RDA) of micronutrients (including vitamins B-complex, C, and E) in slowing disease progression among HIV-infected adults receiving HAART in Uganda.

METHODS/DESIGN: We are using a …
