Cellphone Diaries: Mobile Technology And Self-Authored Digital Videos In Asset Mapping, Kofi Boone Nov 2012

Cellphone Diaries: Mobile Technology And Self-Authored Digital Videos In Asset Mapping, Kofi Boone

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

The Cellphone diaries project engaged African-American residents of historic South Park East Raleigh, North Carolina in the use of “smartphones” to document places that had meaning for them in Chavis Park. Chavis Park is the green heart of their community, and is undergoing rapid change. The project was a component of an effort by NC State University investigators to support a neighborhood revitalization framework organized around a community vision plan. Cellphone diaries attempted to 1) train residents in the use of “smartphone” digital videos for individual on-site asset mapping, and 2) compare the results of individual on-site “smartphone” based approaches …

Transformed Through Relationship: Faculty And Community Partners Give Voice To The Power Of Partnerships, Seanna M. Kerrigan, Vicki L. Reitenauer Nov 2012

Transformed Through Relationship: Faculty And Community Partners Give Voice To The Power Of Partnerships, Seanna M. Kerrigan, Vicki L. Reitenauer

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

Since the 1990s hundreds of institutions of higher education have engaged in processes to develop community-university partnerships in order to develop community-based learning program that enhance student learning and strengthen our communities. These partnerships are built upon ideals of reciprocity and synergy yet they have frequently lacked rich qualitative assessment to describe the nature of these relationships, the roles played in these relationships, and the impact that these partnerships have on students, faculty, and the community partners. This study engaged 10 faculty and their corresponding community partners to document the practices of these partnerships and the impact that they had …

Equity In International Experiential Learning: Assessing Benefits To Students And Host Communities, Erika D. Nelson, Thomas Klak Nov 2012

Equity In International Experiential Learning: Assessing Benefits To Students And Host Communities, Erika D. Nelson, Thomas Klak

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

This research uses participant observation and other qualitative methods to evaluate whether faculty-led short-term study abroad programs can successfully carry out responsible ‘fair trade’, and thereby substantially benefit not only students but also the host communities. The research draws insights by comparing two experiential learning courses taught in South Africa and Dominica. Results suggest that students benefit in various transformative ways in both courses, by applying sustainability and development studies concepts to real-life service and hands-on learning in cross-cultural situations. The Dominica course yields more host community benefits, however, because of the instructors’ long-term commitments to reciprocal partnerships and equitable …

Promoting Student Engagement: Using Community Service-Learning Projects In Undergraduate Psychology, Rick Harnish, K. Robert Bridges Nov 2012

Promoting Student Engagement: Using Community Service-Learning Projects In Undergraduate Psychology, Rick Harnish, K. Robert Bridges

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

In this article, we present a novel way to integrate psychological theories and research methods by engaging undergraduate psychology students in service-learning projects. Our goal for the course was to bring to life theories and research methods that students often regard as academic rather than practical. We describe the different projects conducted with several community partners over the course of seven years. Students reported high satisfaction with the course as compared to similar courses that do not have a service-learning component. Additionally, students performed better (as measured by final grades) in the course that had a service-learning component. We discuss …

Faculty Intent To Stay And The Perceived Relationship With Supervisor At A Career-Focused University, Gary A. Markowitz

The relationship between faculty members’ perceptions of the quality of the faculty-administrator relationship, and faculty intent to stay at one’s institution was examined at a Florida-based, multi-campus, non-profit, career-focused university. The pool of potential participants included the total population of 1,085 full-time and part-time campus-based undergraduate and graduate faculty. Survey instruments included: Leader-Member Exchange Version 7 (LMX-7) Questionnaire (faculty-administrator relationship); Price and Mueller’s (1986) Measure of Turnover Intent (Intent to Stay); Mowday, Steers and Porter’s (1979) Measure of Organizational Commitment as adopted by Daly and Dee (2006); and Heneman and Schwab’s (1985) Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire as adopted by Neumann & …
