Density And Diversity Of Penaeid Shrimp And Fish Species In Near-Shore Seagrass Beds Of Northern Biscayne Bay, Florida (Usa), Robin Cascioli Dec 2012

Density And Diversity Of Penaeid Shrimp And Fish Species In Near-Shore Seagrass Beds Of Northern Biscayne Bay, Florida (Usa), Robin Cascioli

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Seagrass beds serve critical functions in coastal Florida ecosystems. The beds serve as nursery habitat for many juvenile reef fish species and provide protection for many types of benthic organisms found in Biscayne Bay. They help stabilize sediment that would otherwise increase turbidity around coral reefs, filter the water of contaminants, and help support an entire food web. Three species of seagrass were found at the study sites in northern Biscayne Bay: Thalassia testudinum, Halodule wrightii, and Syringodium filiforme. This study focused on understanding the organism habitat interaction by determining the species diversity, seasonal densities, and the …

Perceptions Of Mental Illness In The Legal System, Krista Wallace Dec 2012

Perceptions Of Mental Illness In The Legal System, Krista Wallace

Criminal Justice

Previous research suggests that there are stereotypes and misperceptions about the mentally ill population which affect juror’s decision making in cases where the insanity defense is raised. Many individuals believe it to be a “loophole” in the criminal justice system for offenders to escape punishment (Skeem and Golding, 2002). This study explores community perceptions of schizophrenia and personality disorders in a legal context. Results support that individuals are significantly less confident of their verdict decisions when the offender has a mental illness than when the offender has no mental illness. In addition, the presence of a mental illness significantly affects …

Why Snails? How Gastropods Improve Our Understanding Of Ecological Disturbance, Christopher P. Bloch Dec 2012

Why Snails? How Gastropods Improve Our Understanding Of Ecological Disturbance, Christopher P. Bloch

Bridgewater Review

The concept of equilibrium - the idea that a perturbed system will tend to return to its original state - is the basis for many foundational theories in ecology. Yet, the spatial and temporal dynamics of ecosystems are strongly influenced by disturbance. If a particular disturbance greatly alters local climatic conditions, gastropods should be among the first organisms to show a measurable response. The effects of human alteration of habitats (for example, conversion of forest to agriculture) have much longer-lasting effects than those of natural disturbances.

Effects Of Semen Extender On Motility And Movement Patterns Of Frozen-Thawed Eld’S Deer (Cervus Eldii) Spermatozoa, Sukumal Rittem, Daraka Thongthainun, Wanlaya Tipkantha, Boripat Siriaroonrat, Nikorn Thongtip

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Two semen samples of Siamese Eld,s deer (Cervus eldii siamensis: SED) and seven semen samples of Thamin Eld,s deer (Cervus eldii thamin: TED) were collected by using electroejaculation. Each ejaculate was diluted and cryopreserved with 2 extenders; 1) TRIS; and 2) modified BF5F supplemented with 5% final glycerol concentration. The movement patterns of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were assessed using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). In TED, the results revealed a significantly higher (p< 0.05) percentage of total motility (%TM), percentage of progressive motility (%PM), track speed (VCL) and lateral amplitude (ALH) in TRIS extender. The results also revealed a significantly low (p< 0.05) progressive velocity (VSL), straightness (STR) and linearity (LIN) in TRIS extender. However, for path velocity (VAP) and beat frequency (BCF), there were no differences between both extenders. In SED, sperm motility and sperm movement parameters did not show differences between TRIS and modified BF5F extenders. Findings from this study will aid in Eld’s deer semen banking and artificial insemination success in the future.

When Dna Won't Work, Rick Visser, Greg Hampikian

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Within the criminal justice system, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) evidence has often been heralded as the gold standard of forensic science. In a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Chief Justice Roberts wrote that "DNA testing has an unparalleled ability both to exonerate the wrongly convicted and to identify the guilty. It has the potential to significantly improve both the criminal justice system and police investigative practices." The phrases “unparalleled ability” and “significantly improve” reflect the high standard that DNA has attained in both forensic science and the entire criminal justice system.

Forensic DNA technology has a major advantage over other forensic …

The Expressive Cost Of Corporate Immunity, Gregory M. Gilchrist Dec 2012

The Expressive Cost Of Corporate Immunity, Gregory M. Gilchrist

UC Law Journal

Is it possible to justify imposing criminal liability on corporations? Two basic aspects of criminal law have no application to corporations: Corporations cannot be jailed and they cannot form mental states. Moreover, there is reason to think that much of the deterrent effect generated by corporate criminal liability could be generated more efficiently by civil liability. Still, the demand for criminal prosecution of corporations remains high. This Article seeks to understand why we have corporate criminal liability, and it concludes that expressivism is necessary to justify the practice. Expressivism justifies punishment by reference to the benefits of a statement of …

Understanding And Incentivizing Biosimilars, Jason Kanter, Robin Feldman Dec 2012

Understanding And Incentivizing Biosimilars, Jason Kanter, Robin Feldman

UC Law Journal

Congress recently passed the Biosimilars Act in an attempt to replicate the success that generic small molecule drugs have enjoyed under the Hatch-Waxman Act. The Biosimilars Act provides a pathway for biosimilars to achieve quicker and less expensive FDA approval than what is required for a new biopharmaceutical. There is, however, greater uncertainty and cost associated with achieving the coveted biosimilarity status. This reflects the complex production methods of biopharmaceuticals, along with the many factors that can alter the structure and function of such drugs. This Article analyzes the Biosimilars Act and the draft guidances recently released by the FDA. …

Going Rogue: Stop The Beach Renourishment As An Object Of Morbid Fascination, Mary Doyle, Stephen J. Schnably

UC Law Journal

Scholarly response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Stop the Beach Renourishment, Inc. v. Florida Department of Environmental Protection has focused on the plurality’s strong advocacy of a judicial takings doctrine. We take a different tack. While the concept of judicial takings is worthy of serious attention, it is wrong to treat the plurality opinion as an ordinary object of analysis. It is, instead, the emanation of a Court going rogue. Three basic symptoms of the pathology stand out. First, sleight of hand: The plurality opinion purports to be about an institutional issue—can a state court commit a taking?—while slipping …
