Use Of Second Harmonic Generation (Shg) Imaging For 3-Dimensional Ultrastructural Visualization Of Muscle Repair Mechanisms, Matthew Dufner May 2012

Use Of Second Harmonic Generation (Shg) Imaging For 3-Dimensional Ultrastructural Visualization Of Muscle Repair Mechanisms, Matthew Dufner

Honors Scholar Theses

In this study, we have combined SHG imaging with various fluorescent dyes which are designed to stain nuclei and used a skeletal muscle injury and regeneration model to establish the ability of this approach to reliably and reproducibly evaluate the above nuclear parameters. By using the cobra cardiotoxin (CTX-1), which creates acute well defined injuries within the muscle, on the tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius hind limb muscles of mice, predictable and reproducible regenerative patterns (in response to acute injury) can be observed by harvesting muscle samples at specific time points during recovery. Through SHG imaging, we endeavor to document …

Fostering Aging In Place: "Healthy Naturally Occurring Retirement Community" (H-Norc) Qualities In A Southwest Ohio Suburb, Laura A. Previll

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

This community assessment uses the concept of “H-NORCs” or Healthy Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities as a framework to analyze supports for aging (Masotti, Johnson-Masotti, Fick, & MacLeod, 2006) in Kettering, Ohio -- a first tier suburb of Dayton where the proportion of people over the age of 60 was 23.8% in 2010. In this study, I used focus groups and interviews to collect qualitative data on five H-NORC attributes: (1) economic policies that benefit seniors; (2) types of transportation support for seniors; (3) neighborhood design for physical activity; (4) opportunities for social integration and sense of belonging; and (5) health …

Herpes simplex virus -1 (HSV-1) is an extremely common virus and has the ability to cause recurrent infections. A vast majority of adults have been exposed to the virus and could be asymptomatic. The purpose of this study was to determine the lowest inhibitory concentration of black …

Effects Of Different Microenvironmental Conditions On The Growth And Differentiation Of Dental Pulp Stem Cells, Matthew Cupelli May 2012

Effects Of Different Microenvironmental Conditions On The Growth And Differentiation Of Dental Pulp Stem Cells, Matthew Cupelli

All Theses

Human teeth are very complex structures that are susceptible to many different pathologies due to poor dental health. Currently, there are many restorative methods to reestablish some of the function that teeth have, but the materials used in these methods all have drawbacks and cannot fully mimic the native teeth. Tissue engineering research groups have begun to explore regenerating bone or dental tissue using mesenchymal stem cells derived from the bone marrow. However, our group focuses on regenerating dental tissues using multipotent stem cells from dental pulp.
Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have shown similarities to bone marrow stem cells …

Home-Based Primary Care: A Return Of The House Call, Nicole M. Windjue May 2012

Home-Based Primary Care: A Return Of The House Call, Nicole M. Windjue

Theses and Dissertations

Retention and recruitment of providers is an ongoing stmggle in small and rural communities and poses a significant public health concern in meeting the needs of our aging population. This unfortunate situation will force many of our aging adults and home bound elders out of their homes and into skilled nursing facilities or assisted living environments long before they would have otherwise required skilled care. Providing primary care visits in the home is one way of addressing this issue. The medical and nursing communities have an obligation and a difficult challenge in providing our aging elders with a continuity of …

Existential Psychotherapy With Adults In Assisted Living, Christine A. Burbidge

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This study explored aging individuals’ perceptions of existential poetry therapy. Six existential themes served as guides. They were: hope, gratitude, mindfulness, loss of mobility, forgiveness, and meaning in life. The data were analyzed via three sub-inquiries: (a) What thoughts and feelings do these six themes elicit; (b) What additional themes (existential or non) would the participants like to explore; and (c) What roadblocks hinder this population for accessing poetry therapy to its optimal extent. The research method involved two focus groups with a total of five participants, and data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The three most common themes …

Using The Framingham Risk Score To Evaluate Immigrant Effect On Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Mexican Americans, Jennifer J. Salinas, Bassent Abdelbary, Jeffrey Wilson, Monir Hossain, Susan P. Fisher-Hoch, Joseph B. Mccormick

Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Publications

Background—This study uses the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) for 10-year cardiovascular disease (CVD) to evaluate differences between Mexican American immigrants and the U.S.-born population. Methods and Results—Data from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort (N=1,559). Average total risk scores were generated by age group for each gender. Regression analysis was conducted adjusting for covariates and interaction effects. Both women and men in the CCHC sample who were long-term immigrant residents (mean FRS scores women 4.2 with p<.001 vs. men 4.0 with p<.001) or born in the U.S. (mean FRS scores women 4.6 with p<.001 vs. men 3.3 with p<.001) had significantly higher risk scores than immigrants who had only been in this country for less than 10 years. The interaction model indicates that differences between immigrant and native-born Mexican Americans are most greatly felt at lowest levels of socioeconomic status for men in the CCHC. Conclusions—This study suggests that in terms of immigrant advantage in CVD risk, on whom, where, and how the comparisons are being made have important implications for the degree of difference observed.

Movement Is Medicine: The Effect Of A Structured Mobility Program On Functional Decline In Hospitalized Older Adults, Marie J. Bell May 2012

Movement Is Medicine: The Effect Of A Structured Mobility Program On Functional Decline In Hospitalized Older Adults, Marie J. Bell

Education Doctoral

Abstract Functional decline is defined as the consequence of physiological changes of aging resulting in the inability to perform self-care activities independently. Hospitalized older adults are more likely to decline in functional status resulting in longer length of stay. Hospital care is often focused on treating acute illness while functional status is overlooked. Low mobility and bedrest are common occurrences during hospitalization. The most predictable and probably most preventable cause of functional decline is deconditioning from bedrest and reduced mobility. The purpose of this study was to determine if an early ambulation program can maintain functional levels for hospitalized older …
