Predictors Of Time Volunteering, Religious Giving, And Secular Giving: Implications For Nonprofit Organizations, Namkee G. Choi, Diana M. Dinitto Jun 2012

Predictors Of Time Volunteering, Religious Giving, And Secular Giving: Implications For Nonprofit Organizations, Namkee G. Choi, Diana M. Dinitto

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Using data from the survey Midlife Development in the United States, 2004-2006, the present study examined characteristics associated with time volunteering, religious giving, and secular giving. Multivariate analysis, guided by the theory of volunteering, showed that education and income predicted time volunteering and both religious and secular charitable giving. Generative qualities (e.g., confidence in one's skills, desire to assist others) were significant predictors of time spent volunteering and secular giving, while religious identification was the strongest predictor of religious giving. Perceived social integration was a significant predictor of time volunteering and religious giving. Implications for nonprofit organizations that need to …

Bias And Equivalence In Cross-Cultural Research, Jia He, Fons Van De Vijver Jun 2012

Bias And Equivalence In Cross-Cultural Research, Jia He, Fons Van De Vijver

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Bias and equivalence are key concepts in the methodology of cross-cultural studies. Bias is a generic term for any challenge of the comparability of cross-cultural data; bias leads to invalid conclusions. The demonstration of equivalence (lack of bias) is a prerequisite for any cross-cultural comparison. we first describe considerations that are relevant when choosing instruments in a cross-cultural study, notably the question of whether an existing or new instrument is to be preferred. We then describe the definition, manifestation, and sources of three types of bias (construct, method, and item bias), and three levels of equivalence (construct, measurement unit, and full …

Characterization Of Muscle Spindle Afferents In The Adult Mouse Using An In Vitro Muscle-Nerve Preparation, Katherine Wilkinson, H. E. Kloefkorn, S. Hochman Jun 2012

Characterization Of Muscle Spindle Afferents In The Adult Mouse Using An In Vitro Muscle-Nerve Preparation, Katherine Wilkinson, H. E. Kloefkorn, S. Hochman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

We utilized an in vitro adult mouse extensor digitorum longus (EDL) nerve-attached preparation to characterize the responses of muscle spindle afferents to ramp-and-hold stretch and sinusoidal vibratory stimuli. Responses were measured at both room (24°C) and muscle body temperature (34°C). Muscle spindle afferent static firing frequencies increased linearly in response to increasing stretch lengths to accurately encode the magnitude of muscle stretch (tested at 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% of resting length [Lo]). Peak firing frequency increased with ramp speeds (20% Lo/sec, 40% Lo/sec, and 60% Lo/sec). As a population, muscle spindle afferents could entrain 1:1 to sinusoidal vibrations throughout the …

The Role Of Self-Management In Increasing Subjective Well-Being Of Dki Jakarta’S Citizens, Bagus Takwin, Evita Eddie Singgih, Sahat Khrisfianus Panggabean

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Big cities are characterized by their dense population, limited space, and high mobility. Past research has shown that the citizens of DKI Jakarta feel quite unhappy. Therefore it is necessary to improve the happiness (subjective well-being) level of DKI Jakarta’s population. Subjective well-being relates to how an individual self-manages his/her activities. Individuals with good subjective well-being tend to engage in activities of high productive values. This research aims to understand the role of self-management in the subjective well-being of the population of DKI Jakarta. 638 citizens of DKI Jakarta (males = 329, females = 309; mean age = 36) participated …

Graduate Center for Gerontology Faculty Publications

The role of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF) in neural function has been investigated extensively in several neurodegenerative conditions, but rarely in brain aging, where cognitive and physiologic changes are milder and more variable. Here, we show that protein levels for TNF receptor 1 (TNFR1) are significantly elevated in the hippocampus relative to TNF receptor 2 (TNFR2) in aged (22 months) but not young adult (6 months) Fischer 344 rats. To determine if altered TNF/TNFR1 interactions contribute to key brain aging biomarkers, aged rats received chronic (4-6 week) intracranial infusions of XPro1595: a soluble dominant negative TNF that preferentially inhibits …

ESI Publications

Breast milk fatty acid (FA) composition varies greatly among individual women, including in percentages of the long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (LCPUFA) 20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid, AA) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), which are important for infant neurological development. It has been suggested that owing to wide variation in milk LCPUFA and low DHA in Western diets, standards of milk FA composition should be derived from populations consuming traditional diets. We collected breast milk samples from Tsimane women at varying lactational stages (6–82 weeks). The Tsimane are an indigenous, natural fertility, subsistence-level population living in Amazonia Bolivia. Tsimane samples were matched by lactational …

Student Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Anna Feenstra May 2012

Student Attitudes Toward Older Adults, Anna Feenstra

Honors Theses

An aging American population means more older adults will be entering the health care system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the attitudes of nursing students toward older adults and to determine if these attitudes change over the course of a nursing program. This study was carried out in a university in the Midwest United States. A pre-test post-test single group design was used for this study. Students were surveyed three times throughout the program using Kogan’s Old People scale (KOP) and a demographic questionnaire. Testing was conducted at the beginning and end of the sophomore geriatric course …

Mediating And Moderating Effects On The Association Between Vision Loss And Depression Among An Older Population, Terry L. Stone, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Walter Wittich May 2012

Mediating And Moderating Effects On The Association Between Vision Loss And Depression Among An Older Population, Terry L. Stone, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Walter Wittich

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to gain a more holistic view of the association between depression and visual functioning by examining possible mediating and moderating factors. Previous research has established a linkage between low life satisfaction and coping skills and depressive symptoms. Results of this study contribute to this literature by indicating that life satisfaction partially mediates the relationship between visual functioning and depression. Furthermore, a significant coping by visual functioning interaction was discovered, revealing that among this sample, visual impairment is associated with higher levels of depression among individuals with low coping skills; however, little effect was found …

Grandparents, Great Parents: Negotiating The Role Transition To Custodial Grandparent, Leanne Alaine Burnett May 2012

Grandparents, Great Parents: Negotiating The Role Transition To Custodial Grandparent, Leanne Alaine Burnett

Communication

An ever increasing number of grandparents in the United States are taking on the responsibility for providing primary care for their grandchildren. Focus group interviews conducted in two urban communities in Alaska were the basis of this study examining how grandparents negotiate the role transition as they become custodial grandparents. Role theory was used to inform the analysis of the data. The two major themes which emerged suggested these transitions were effected by role conflict and role timing. The grandparents participating in the study indicated that involvement in peer support groups helped them to more successfully negotiate this difficult role …

Golf: An Alternative Form Of Physical Activity For An Aging Population, Lisa Richardson May 2012

Golf: An Alternative Form Of Physical Activity For An Aging Population, Lisa Richardson

Honors Theses

It has been found that breaking an exercise into multiple ten minute bouts can provide the same results as a lump bout of the same time (American College of Sports Medicine, 2010). Though little research has been done on its effectiveness as a modality of physical activity, golf, due to the considerable amounts of walking involved and the social and leisure nature of the game, could be used as an option of physical activity for older adults. In this literature review, the primary goal is to investigate the literature regarding how much energy an older adult could predictably expend while …

From The Womb To The Tomb: The Role Of Transfers In Shaping The Evolved Human Life History, Michael Gurven, Jonathan Stieglitz, Paul L. Hooper, Cristina Gomes, Hillard Kaplan

ESI Publications

Humans are the longest living and slowest growing of all primates. Although most primates are social, humans are highly cooperative and social in ways that likely co-evolved with the slow human life history. In this paper we highlight the role of resource transfers and non-material assistance within and across generations in shaping low human mortality rates. The use of complex cooperative strategies to minimize risk is a necessary precursor for selecting further reductions in mortality rate in late adulthood. In conjunction with changes in the age-profile of production, the impacts of resource transfers and other forms of cooperation on reducing …

Investigation Of A Possible Association Between Pon1 Polymorphisms L55m And Q192r With Coronary Artery Disease And Type 2 Diabetes Patients Within A Southern Population, Chiquita Yvette Mcdaniel May 2012

Investigation Of A Possible Association Between Pon1 Polymorphisms L55m And Q192r With Coronary Artery Disease And Type 2 Diabetes Patients Within A Southern Population, Chiquita Yvette Mcdaniel

Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi has a very high prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), especially among African Americans compared to Caucasians. This project determined the L55M genotypes of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) in 187 people and evaluated associations of PON1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), Q192R and L55M, with CAD and T2D in a Mississippian (southern) population. Significant associations were found with PON1 SNPs and race: genotypes LL, LM, QR, and RR showed significant associations with race (p values 0.0000955, 0.0024, 0.00001244, and 0.00001676, respectively), and combined genotypes LMQQ and LMRR were significantly associated with race (p values = 0.0001013 …

Differential Effects Of Race And Poverty On Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions, Farrukh B. Hakeem, Daniel L. Howard, Timothy S. Carey, Yhenneko J. Taylor

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

This study is a continuation of an earlier study that examined hospitalization rates for ambulatory care sensitive (ACS) conditions, as a proxy for quality of care, and found evidence of a racial disparity among African American and White Medicare beneficiaries. The current study sought to determine whether neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) explained this disparity. Differences in rates of ACS hospitalizations by race were assessed using Cochran-Mantel Haenszel tests and Poisson regression. Unadjusted rate ratios for ACS hospitalization for African Americans vs. Whites were found to be higher in low poverty areas (rate ratio (RR)=1.13; 95% CI (1.08, 1.17)) than in …
