Co-Designing An Sms Service For London’S Homeless People: Considerations For Designers Engaging With A Vulnerable User Group, Ohyoon Kwon, Annemiek Van Boeijen Feb 2012

Co-Designing An Sms Service For London’S Homeless People: Considerations For Designers Engaging With A Vulnerable User Group, Ohyoon Kwon, Annemiek Van Boeijen

ServDes Conference Series

This paper reports the challenges of designers developing an SMS service for and with a vulnerable user group; homeless people; and their supporting agencies in London. It also describes the deployed methods in the design process. Co-design activities were performed with homeless people in and outside their living environments such as streets; a hostel and a day centre. The first author engaged with them as an insider (volunteer) or an outsider (designer or facilitator). This paper highlights how co-design activities in the inside and outside environments of a vulnerable user group affect the engagement of this group. Furthermore; the paper …

Sedimentary Succesion Of The Lower Cretaceous Deposits From The North-Western Part Of Pădurea Craiului (Apuseni Mountains, Romania), Daniel F. Lazar, Ioan I. Bucur, Ioan Cociuba, Emanoil Sasaran Feb 2012

Sedimentary Succesion Of The Lower Cretaceous Deposits From The North-Western Part Of Pădurea Craiului (Apuseni Mountains, Romania), Daniel F. Lazar, Ioan I. Bucur, Ioan Cociuba, Emanoil Sasaran

Studia UBB Geologia

Within the general succession of the Lower Cretaceous deposits from the Vârciorog-Dobreşti area (Pădurea Craiului Mountains), carbonate and terrigenous deposits were identified. The limestones were assigned to two distinctive lithostratigraphic units: the Valea Măgurii and Vârciorog formations. Based on the orbitolinids Palorbitolina lenticularis and Mesorbitolina texana their ages are assigned to the early Aptian, and respectively late Aptian–Albian. The terrigenous facies mainly include fine grained deposits (clays, siltites, marls) and, to a lesser extent, coarser ones (glauconitic sandstones and conglomerates), and they are attributed to the Ecleja and Vârciorog formations. The marls of the Ecleja Formation have been observed in …

Predicting Natural Base-Flow Stream Water Chemistry In The Western United States, John R. Olson, Charles P. Hawkins Feb 2012

Predicting Natural Base-Flow Stream Water Chemistry In The Western United States, John R. Olson, Charles P. Hawkins

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Robust predictions of stream solute concentrations expected under natural (reference) conditions would help establish more realistic water quality standards and improve stream ecological assessments. Models predicting solute concentrations from environmental factors would also help identify the relative importance of different factors that influence water chemistry. Although data are available describing the major factors controlling water chemistry (i.e., geology, climate, atmospheric deposition, soils, vegetation, topography), geologic maps do not adequately convey how rocks vary in their chemical and physical properties. We addressed this issue by associating rock chemical and physical properties with geological map units to produce continuous maps of percentages …

Child Soldiers And The Architecture Of Post Bellum Settlements, Mark A. Drumbl Feb 2012

Child Soldiers And The Architecture Of Post Bellum Settlements, Mark A. Drumbl

Emerging Issues in International Humanitarian Law

At the very least, world-wide, tens of thousands of persons below the age of eighteen currently are associated with armed forces or armed groups. Adults who serve in such forces or groups, moreover, may have joined while younger than eighteen. In addition, the past decade has seen the demobilization of many tens of thousands more child soldiers. Although joyful, their return journey to civilian life also is bittersweet. They come back home to the communities where they initially had been recruited – at times, forcibly – and where, in some instances, they had committed terrible atrocities. While associated with armed …

An Interview With Richard Rodriguez, Susan Lerner Feb 2012

An Interview With Richard Rodriguez, Susan Lerner

Booth

Richard Rodriguez grew up in California, the son of immigrant Mexican parents. He excelled academically, completed degrees at Stanford University and Columbia University, and was poised to continue in academia when he turned down offers from several prestigious schools, uncomfortable with the possibility that affirmative action gave him an unfair advantage. Rodriguez wrote about his early experiences in Catholic school and his assimilation to America in his first book, Hunger of Memory. Subsequent books, Days of Obligation: An Argument with My Mexican Father, and Brown: The Last Discovery of America, further explore issues of culture, race, and …

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Gems Soil Organic Carbon Model To Land Cover Land Use Classification Uncertainties Under Different Climate Scenarios In Senegal, Amadou M. Dieye, David P. Roy, N. P. Hanan, S. Lui, M. Hansen, A. Toure Feb 2012

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Gems Soil Organic Carbon Model To Land Cover Land Use Classification Uncertainties Under Different Climate Scenarios In Senegal, Amadou M. Dieye, David P. Roy, N. P. Hanan, S. Lui, M. Hansen, A. Toure

GSCE Faculty Publications

Spatially explicit land cover land use (LCLU) change information is needed to drive biogeochemical models that simulate soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. Such information is increasingly being mapped using remotely sensed satellite data with classification schemes and uncertainties constrained by the sensing system, classification algorithms and land cover schemes. In this study, automated LCLU classification of multi-temporal Landsat satellite data were used to assess the sensitivity of SOC modeled by the Global Ensemble Biogeochemical Modeling System (GEMS). The GEMS was run for an area of 1560km2 in Senegal under three climate change scenarios with LCLU maps generated using different Landsat …

Agency Through Ambiguity: Women Ngo Workers In Jalalabad, Afghanistan, Melissa S. Kerr Chiovenda Feb 2012

Agency Through Ambiguity: Women Ngo Workers In Jalalabad, Afghanistan, Melissa S. Kerr Chiovenda

Master's Theses

Pashtun women working for international NGOs and development organizations in Jalalabad Afghanistan balance the requirements of their employment with a set values, known as doing pashto, that guide their behavior as Pashtuns. These two influences on their lives are often contradictory. Based on fieldwork in Jalalabad, this study suggests that Pashtun women working for such organizations do not overtly resist Pashtun norms that often enforce a strict segregation of women. Rather, they use strategic ambiguity, maintaining that they are performing pashto well while at the same time taking part in some work activities that on the surface appear contrary to …

The Geographic Value Of Patient-Carried Medical Records In Improving Healthcare In The Us, Lauren Edmundson Feb 2012

The Geographic Value Of Patient-Carried Medical Records In Improving Healthcare In The Us, Lauren Edmundson

The Macalester Review

American medical records have typically been maintained in a single location. However, patient-carried medical records (PCMRs) present an opportunity to alter the space in which health records and information operate. While past research has evaluated PCMRs from a largely economic perspective, this research examines potential benefits of PCMRs through a geographic framework. In total, while further work is needed to perfect the PCMR system, they can ultimately serve as a tool to alleviate four specific complaints made by American patients: lack of communication between provider and patient, lack of communication between providers, medical error, and high costs.

The Court Of Private Land Claims And The Petaca Grant: Case Study Summary, Marcos A. Roybal Feb 2012

The Court Of Private Land Claims And The Petaca Grant: Case Study Summary, Marcos A. Roybal

The Rio Chama Basin: Land, Water and Community

The Petaca land grant of Rio Arriba County in many ways typifies the patterns of settlement, adjudication, and contemporary issues that characterize New Mexicos land grants. Though it was originally established as a community land grant for agricultural purposes, Petaca's natural resource-rich lands quickly garnered the attention of speculators and investors when New Mexico was acquired by the United States in 1848. This, coupled with national manifest destiny aspirations, resulted in over a quarter century of legal battles and the ultimate dispossession of tens of thousands of acres of common lands. This case study is a synopsis of the history …
