Census 2010: What We No Longer Know About Small And Rural Places, Randolph L. Cantrell Apr 2012

Census 2010: What We No Longer Know About Small And Rural Places, Randolph L. Cantrell

Cornhusker Economics

The release of data from the Decennial Census always creates a “buzz” for people interested in knowing what is happening in their communities. The 2010 Census was no exception, allowing residents of any state, county, community, zip code or neighborhood to know with confidence how many people reside in their area of interest; along with their age, gender, race, ethnicity, household and family size and composition, group quarters arrangements and home ownership status. These data reflect the characteristics of the population with relatively high reliability for the theoretical reporting date of April 1 of the Census year, and allow an …

Overview Of Rural America: Past, Present, And Future, Brian Dabson, Nancy Arnold, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Apr 2012

Overview Of Rural America: Past, Present, And Future, Brian Dabson, Nancy Arnold, Tom Seekins Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Rural America is a diverse and changing place. Small-town America, the family farm, and the frontier west are images that have long formed the foundation of the rural American dream. Basic rural values that are ingrained in visions of open spaces, picturesque rolling hills, rich farmlands, patchwork waves of grain, and majestic mountains are alive and romanticized in our culture. Yet these popular images mask the reality that rural America is an extremely significant, diverse, and complex part of our society, with resources, problems, and needs that are extensive and largely misunderstood. This paper addresses several key issues and suggests …

Getting Away With Murder (Most Of The Time): Civil War Era Homicide Cases In Boone County, Missouri, Frank O. Bowman Iii Apr 2012

Getting Away With Murder (Most Of The Time): Civil War Era Homicide Cases In Boone County, Missouri, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

Much of the modem American legal process is dependent, not on particular substantive or procedural rules, but on legal and societal infrastructure that we tend to take for granted. To give the simplest example, appellate practice in Missouri (and elsewhere) was stunted until the late 1880s by the absence of court reporters who could create the verbatim trial records upon which a detailed review for error depends. The study of actual cases decided by juries and judges - law in action, rather than law in theory - owes its fascination to the insights it gives into what people really believe …

Private Standardization In Public International Lawmaking, Janelle M. Diller Apr 2012

Private Standardization In Public International Lawmaking, Janelle M. Diller

Michigan Journal of International Law

The interplay between market forces and legal compulsion is as old as the Code of Ur-Nammu, yet the financial incentives for social conformity have never been more patent. In what may be its most ambitious effort yet, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recently launched the International Standard ISO 26000:2010 (ISO 26000) on social responsibility (SR), a new voluntary standard providing guidance to any organization on good practices in SR.2 ISO 26000 provides wide-ranging guidance on areas of social and environmental conduct that are relevant to public policy and regulation. The single ISO-branded package offers a new product that markets …

Student Satisfaction And Frustration With Online Education, Chris Alan Tohm Apr 2012

Student Satisfaction And Frustration With Online Education, Chris Alan Tohm

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Although online education is praised for convenience, a stigma still remains about its quality. Constant comparisons to traditional methods coupled with a popular belief that online education is ”easier” continue to denigrate online learning to an inferior alternative. Online education and the technology behind it are innovative but their relative immaturity has limited most of the research to an institutional perspective. This exploratory study examines the student perspective of online education in terms of personal satisfaction and frustration by interviewing eight students with online education experience and analyzing their perceptions using existing computer mediated communication theories. This study provides insight …

To The Peripheries Of Mormondom: The Apostolic Around-The-World Journey Of David O. Mckay, 1920–1921, Kaitlyn S. Hedge, Hugh J. Cannon, Reid L. Neilson Apr 2012

To The Peripheries Of Mormondom: The Apostolic Around-The-World Journey Of David O. Mckay, 1920–1921, Kaitlyn S. Hedge, Hugh J. Cannon, Reid L. Neilson

BYU Studies

An around-the-world journey made by an Apostle may not be something extraordinary today, but in 1920 it was monumental. Hugh J. Cannon's To the Peripheries of Mormondom details the historic trip of Elder David O. McKay--the first Apostle to make a journey of this magnitude and to visit most of the places he did. He and Hugh J. Cannon were called on a one-year fact-finding mission to visit the Church's non-North American congregations and to study the customs and needs of the people at each place. This mission was the beginning of a major push toward the globalization of the …

Manipulation And Counter-Framing: A Content Analysis Of Media's Response To The Anti-Communist Movements In 1990 Romania, Adrian Popan

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The purpose of the present article is to demonstrate the importance of counter-framing for the outcome of social movements. To do so, I focus on a particular case, namely Romanian society during the first half of 1990. The research identifies some strategies of the ruling group to create and impose their own framework and to align it with the interests of the people. It is based on content analysis of a Romanian daily newspaper faithful to the government, employing grounded theory as the method of research. The analysis highlights several relevant categories, grouped under two main subsections: creating an unfavorable …

Beyond The Volcanoes: A Community Partnership For Health In Rural Nicaragua, Paige Snyder, Cathy Wingstrom, Chelsea Zeman Apr 2012

Beyond The Volcanoes: A Community Partnership For Health In Rural Nicaragua, Paige Snyder, Cathy Wingstrom, Chelsea Zeman

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Background: Health inequities related to gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geography exist in rural Nicaragua due in part to lack of access to health services. The purpose of this ongoing project is to improve health equity in rural Nicaragua through social transformation using community-based participatory action research. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model of human development, school health, and primary health care theories provided the framework for this research. Community-based participatory action research involves six phases: partnership, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination. In the evaluation phase, the goal was to gather information from stove recipients to see if their new stoves have …

November Snowfall Variability And Trends Around Lake Michigan: Sensitivity To Temperature And Teleconnection Patterns, Amanda Bandurski, Justin Barrick, Kristin Smedley Apr 2012

November Snowfall Variability And Trends Around Lake Michigan: Sensitivity To Temperature And Teleconnection Patterns, Amanda Bandurski, Justin Barrick, Kristin Smedley

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Using available long-term stations, November climatology of temperature and snowfall since 1950 has been composited for the region near Lake Michigan. Daily data was examined for the available stations to explore the monthly temperature and snowfall, the number of days with snowfall, and snow cover. The characteristics of six sub-region composites were compared using composites around Lake Michigan, respectively. Early season snowfall is much more common in the eastern sub-regions, implying a dominant role of lake-effect snowfall to the overall climatology. The number of days with snowfall is greater in the eastern sub-regions. Western and eastern sub-regions both exhibit a …

Gis Mapping And Analysis Of Lake-Effect Snowfall Patterns In Indiana And Sw Michigan, Holly Boney, Matthew Christy Apr 2012

Gis Mapping And Analysis Of Lake-Effect Snowfall Patterns In Indiana And Sw Michigan, Holly Boney, Matthew Christy

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Using a multi-decade climatology of lake-effect snowfall events in northern Indiana and adjacent southwest Michigan, a Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis has been developed to explore the spatial patterns of snowfall, as well as the relationship between snowfall and upstream sounding parameters. Using a minimum peak snowfall threshold of five cm reported at one of the available locations with long-term snow reports, there are ~250 cases in the data set. While there are numerous additional reports available for more recent events, particularly with CoCoRAHs data, only the stations available for the entire period were used for the analysis. While reducing …

A C-Band, Dual-Polarimetric Radar Analysis Of A Tornadic Mesoscale Convective System: The 25 May 2011 Northern Illinois And Indiana Tornado Event, Anthony Lyza, Raquel Evaristo, Eric Lenning, Sarah Mustered, Travis Elless, Sarah Al-Momar, Ian Lee, Teresa Bals-Elsholz, Bart Wolf, Kevin Goebbert, Adam Stepanek, Craig Clark

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

During the morning hours of 25 May 2011, at least six tornadoes struck a narrow corridor of Northeast Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Two tornadoes were rated EF0, three EF1, and one EF2. These tornadoes occurred in conjunction with a mesoscale convective system (MCS) that traveled northeast across the region during the early to mid-morning hours, between 1200 UTC and 1500 UTC. The tornadoes occurred at least 65 km away from the nearest NEXRAD WSR-88D radar site. The confirmed tornadoes from this event occurred without severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings likely due to the fact that (1) the squall-line was oriented …

Impact Of Aqua Satellite Data On Hurricane Forecast: Danielle 2010, Travis Elless, Xuguang Wang, Ting Lei, Govindan Kutty Mohan Kumar

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This study focuses on the impact of AQUA satellite data from AIRS and AMSU on the forecast of hurricane Danielle by the Global Forecast System (GFS) model. The data assimilation method adopted to ingest the data is the Gridpoint Statistical method (GSI) which is based on the three dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation technique. Two experiments were carried out to investigate the impact of AQUA satellite radiance observation on the forecast of hurricane Danielle. The first experiment (Control) assimilated all the available data while the second experiment (No AQUA) incorporated all the observations but the AQUA satellite data. Data assimilation …

Wintertime Climate Variability In The Lake Michigan Region: Sensitivity Of Snowfall To Temperature And Northern Hemisphere Teleconnection Patterns, Travis Elless, Tony Lyza, Sarah Mustered, Craig Clark Apr 2012

Wintertime Climate Variability In The Lake Michigan Region: Sensitivity Of Snowfall To Temperature And Northern Hemisphere Teleconnection Patterns, Travis Elless, Tony Lyza, Sarah Mustered, Craig Clark

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Using available long-term stations, a wintertime climatology of temperature and snowfall since 1950 has been composited for the region near Lake Michigan. The seasonal snowfall characteristics of six sub-region composites were subsequently explored, using composites for three sub-regions to the west and east of Lake Michigan, respectively. While snowfall records can be problematic due to observer changes, data within a given sub-region mostly exhibit similar variability. Not surprisingly, locations to the east of Lake Michigan have higher average seasonal snowfall and greater snowfall variability than their upstream counterparts. The variations correlate fairly well among neighboring sub-regions, with the weakest relationship …

Creating A Benefit Index For Targeting Investment In Pedestrian Connectivity Improvements East Bayside Neighborhood: Portland, Me, Damon Yakovleff Apr 2012

Creating A Benefit Index For Targeting Investment In Pedestrian Connectivity Improvements East Bayside Neighborhood: Portland, Me, Damon Yakovleff

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

This project demonstrates how a GIS-based analysis of pedestrian accessibility to selected amenities from locations in and around the East Bayside neighborhood of Portland, Maine can help identify and guide decisions about public investment in improving such access. Two street network configurations are analyzed: the current (2011) condition, and a hypothetical configuration including several connectivity improvements currently under discussion or in the process of construction. The GIS tools are used to calculate the network distances between the centroid of the area’s census blocks and two amenities: the nearest full-service grocery store, and an outdoor fitness station available to the public. …

A Quantitative Examination Of The Educational Technology Characteristics Of Ohio Schools And Their Blue Ribbon Status, Dean Goon

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to analyze data from Ohio schools and the frequency of use of educational technology, a teacher's comfort level using technology, and a teacher's beliefs about the effect of educational technology on teaching and learning based upon the school's Blue Ribbon award status. The study used an ex-post facto, quantitative comparative research design. The variables examined originated from an archival data set: the Ohio Biennial Educational Technology Assessment: 2011 (BETA 10-11). The research questions examined the differences between Blue Ribbon and Non-Blue Ribbon schools based on educational technology use, a teachers' comfort level with technology, …

Eighty-six public middle schools (grades 6-8) comprised the sample for the study; all of these schools were located in Region 1 on the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) School Improvement Map. Data was collected from (AYP) reports publicly accessed on the Georgia Department of Education website. CRCT pass percentages were used …

First Year Student Development: Sophomore Students' Perceptions Of Growth And Contributing Factors, Catherine B. Holbrook Apr 2012

First Year Student Development: Sophomore Students' Perceptions Of Growth And Contributing Factors, Catherine B. Holbrook

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The first year of college is critically important to student success, often shaping the amount and nature of growth and learning over the entire collegiate career in complex and profound ways. For this reason, higher education experts have called for colleges and universities to establish integrated, intentional programs for new students with identified outcomes which are regularly assessed to evaluate effectiveness. The purpose of this concurrent nested study was to investigate how college sophomores perceived their personal development during the first year of college against 10 specific competencies and to understand what types of first year experiences contributed to any …
