Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications
A methodology is provided for the application of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to automated solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment analysis on the regional scale. Challenges in urban information extraction and management for solar PV deployment assessment are determined and quantitative solutions are offered. This paper provides the following contributions: (i) a methodology that is consistent with recommendations from existing literature advocating the integration of cross-disciplinary competences in remote sensing (RS), GIS, computer vision and urban environmental studies; (ii) a robust methodology that can work with low-resolution, incomprehensive data and reconstruct vegetation and building separately, but concurrently; (iii) recommendations for future …

A Spatially Explicit Agent Based Model Of Muscovy Duck Home Range Behavior, James Howard Anderson
A Spatially Explicit Agent Based Model Of Muscovy Duck Home Range Behavior, James Howard Anderson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Research in GIScience has identified agent-based simulation methodologies as effective in the study of complex adaptive spatial systems (CASS). CASS are characterized by the emergent nature of their spatial expressions and by the changing relationships between their constituent variables and how those variables act on the system's spatial expression over time. Here, emergence refers to a CASS property where small-scale, individual action results in macroscopic or system-level patterns over time. This research develops and executes a spatially-explicit agent based model of Muscovy Duck home range behavior. Muscovy duck home range behavior is regarded as a complex adaptive spatial system …

Primary Prevention Of Preschool Children Through A Patient Centered Medical Home Approach, Joanna Dominick
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Background: Data from the Colorado Health Department Child Health Survey (2010) confirmed particular needs for increased enrollment in Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and improved coordination of health services. Families in Adams County continue to face challenges and barriers in the Medicaid/CHP+ enrollment and retention process. Improved outreach at the local level is needed to improve access to these vital resources for children in Adams County.
Purpose: To ascertain whether a referral and tracking system in Adams County preschools will identify children with healthcare needs, improve access to the healthcare system from the preschool, and improve preventive care …

Mediation Of Proposition 187: Creative Solution To An Old Problem? Or Quiet Death For Initiatives?, Nicole E. Lucy
Mediation Of Proposition 187: Creative Solution To An Old Problem? Or Quiet Death For Initiatives?, Nicole E. Lucy
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
The initiative Proposition 187 has been a catalyst for change. Supporters heralded it as the solution to "Save Our State" from the ills of illegal immigration. Those who opposed it, used Proposition 187 as a battle cry to mobilize a disenfranchised minority. Irrespective of ideology, Proposition 187 ended as no one could have predicted in November 1994 when it passed, 59% to 41%. When Governor Gray Davis inherited the Proposition 187 appeal from former Governor Pete Wilson, Governor Davis took the unprecedented step of seeking to resolve the conflict through mediation rather than actively defending Proposition 187 on appeal to …

Renegotiating Third World Debt , Arash S. Arabi
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
The debt crisis facing the Third World is one so severe that it threatens to shatter the economy of countless nations and leaves the future of their lenders in doubt. The only viable solution is to come up with an "alternative" method of dispute resolution to deal with the debt crisis - one that is a cross between arbitration and mediation. A disinterested body should be created to recover some, or if possible, all of the outstanding loans owed to financial institutions, while alleviating the extreme hardships the debt and current debt repayment methods have inflicted. It should be noted, …
Asymmetries Among The Members Of Mercosur, Hadi Hijazi
Asymmetries Among The Members Of Mercosur, Hadi Hijazi
Open Access Theses
The Mercosur countries are very different in terms of their economic size and dimension, their level of development, their population, and the size of their market. Taking into account GDP, population and territory, Uruguay and Paraguay are clearly the smaller Mercosur members and they do not represent even 5% of any of these variables, while Brazil accounts for 70%. At the same time, there are other political and regulatory differences, such as a lack of coordinated macroeconomic policies and incentive policies, in particular. Each member has its own investment promotion policies, as well as policies to support the productive sectors …

A large population of underserved students and residents in the City of Boston suffer from behavioral and/or discipline problems, as well as substance and/or alcohol abuse. A side effect of this behavior is the increasing instance of trash such as cigarette butts, condoms, syringes and packaging being discarded in public areas. The South Boston Youth Action Center (SBYAC) is tackling this problem by making the community aware of the locations and probable sources of this problem. The SBYAC is implementing an effort to rid South Boston parks, playgrounds and areas frequented by children of refuse associated with substance abuse. And, …

Community In A Liquid Modern Era, Jeremy S. Flaherty
Community In A Liquid Modern Era, Jeremy S. Flaherty
Theses and Dissertations
The predominant theorists of community in American sociology define community as either geographically confined local solidarities or as networks or relatively close primary ties. These definitions fail to recognize the realities of modern life, let alone life in the context of a global economy. Community according to the earliest community sociologists was a way of organizing society wherein all the social interactions necessary to the reproduction of daily life were embedded in moral relationships, which were historically primary ties located within local solidary communities. With modernity, most of these social interactions have been removed from those moral relationships, and now …
Do Populations Of An Invasive Weed Differ Greatly In Their Per-Gram Competitive Effects?, James E. Sowerwine, Matthew J. Rinella, Matthew L. Carlson
Do Populations Of An Invasive Weed Differ Greatly In Their Per-Gram Competitive Effects?, James E. Sowerwine, Matthew J. Rinella, Matthew L. Carlson
Western North American Naturalist
Quantifying an invasive species’ negative impacts across its introduced range will be quite challenging if the impacts vary unpredictably from site to site or from population to population. Little emphasis, however, has been placed on quantifying such interpopulation variation in the impacts of individual invasive species. We studied the response of a native grass (Festuca rubra) to competition from 4 geographically dispersed invasive plant (Melilotus albus) populations in order to determine if some populations of this invader have greater competitive impacts than others. Despite the relatively large number of experimental units in our greenhouse study, we …
Response Of An Intermountain Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystem To Water Table Drawdown, Daniel Pritchett, Sara J. Manning
Response Of An Intermountain Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystem To Water Table Drawdown, Daniel Pritchett, Sara J. Manning
Western North American Naturalist
Groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) that do not meet the legal definition of wetlands are important for sustaining regional biodiversity, livestock grazing, and outdoor recreation in the Intermountain West. Such GDEs in Owens Valley, California, are also used to produce 11,225 hectare meters (91,000 acre-feet) of water annually from about 100 water wells. We used 21 years of Landsat data and 18 years of field monitoring data to analyze responses of 2 adjacent-meadow GDEs to different groundwater management practices. The northern meadow, which was subject to continuous water table drawdown below the rooting zone of phreatophytic grasses, experienced decline in total live …

First Record Of The Cicada Tibicen Pruinosus In Colorado, With A Key To Colorado Species Of Tibicen (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), Brian Stucky
Western North American Naturalist
Tibicen pruinosus (Say)—a large, arboreal cicada typically found in the central United States—is reported for the first time from Colorado. This new state record represents a significant western extension of this cicada’s known range. Also reported are new records from Kansas that link the Colorado population to the previously known distribution of T. pruinosus. These results suggest that T. pruinosus has expanded its range westward, likely facilitated by human-induced changes in vegetation on the Great Plains. They also indicate the effectiveness of acoustic surveys as a tool for studying cicada distributions. Finally, an updated key including all 7 species of …

A Craniometric Perspective On The Transition To Agriculture In Europe, Ron Pinhasi, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel
A Craniometric Perspective On The Transition To Agriculture In Europe, Ron Pinhasi, Noreen Von Cramon-Taubadel
Human Biology
Debates surrounding the nature of the Neolithic demographic transition in Europe have historically centered on two opposing models: a "demic" diffusion model whereby incoming farmers from the Near East and Anatolia effectively replaced or completely assimilated indigenous Mesolithic foraging communities, and an "indigenist" model resting on the assumption that ideas relating to agriculture and animal domestication diffused from the Near East but with little or no gene flow. The extreme versions of these dichotomous models were heavily contested primarily on the basis of archeological and modern genetic data. However, in recent years a growing acceptance has arisen of the likelihood …
