Frequency-Based Monitoring Of Small-Scale Explosive Volcanic Activity, Anna K. Worden Apr 2012

Frequency-Based Monitoring Of Small-Scale Explosive Volcanic Activity, Anna K. Worden

2012 Research Day Posters

Strombolian activity is one of the most common types of volcanic activity. When this activity occurs at remote volcanoes it often goes undetected and cannot be monitored easily or safely by direct methods. Satellite remote sensing can be useful in the routine monitoring of this activity. Numerous remote volcanoes in the North Paci c exhibit Strombolian activity, often as a precursor to more vigorous activity which can a ect communities and transportation. Factors a ecting the visibility the explosions include satellite and crater geometry, time of image capture, and most importantly, weather. These factors eliminate a signi cant number of …

German Nationalism And The Allegorical Female In Karl Friedrich Schinkel's The Hall Of Stars, Allison Slingting Apr 2012

German Nationalism And The Allegorical Female In Karl Friedrich Schinkel's The Hall Of Stars, Allison Slingting

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I consider Karl Friedrich Schinkel's The Hall of Stars in the Palace of the Queen of the Night (1813), a set design of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), in relation to female audiences during a time of Germanic nationalism. Although Schinkel is customarily known as the great modern architect of Germany, his work as a set designer is exceedingly telling of his feelings toward the political and geographical unification of the Germanic regions. Through his set designs, Schinkel successfully used the influential space of the theatre to articulate not only nationalism, but positive female empowerment …

Population Structure And Hybridization Of Alaskan Caribou And Reindeer: Integrating Genetics And Local Knowledge, Karen H. Mager Apr 2012

Population Structure And Hybridization Of Alaskan Caribou And Reindeer: Integrating Genetics And Local Knowledge, Karen H. Mager

Biological Sciences

Alaskan caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) are a valued game species and a key grazer in Alaska's terrestrial ecosystem. Caribou herds, defined by female fidelity to calving grounds, are management units. However, the extent to which herds constitute genetic populations is unknown. Historical fluctuations in herd size, range, and distribution suggest periods of contact and isolation between herds. Likewise, historical contact between caribou and introduced domestic reindeer (R.t. tarandus) created opportunities for hybridization, but its extent is not known. I conducted an interdisciplinary study to understand how historical processes influence genetic identity and population structure of caribou and reindeer. Interviews with …

Federal and state mandates to improve student achievement for all students necessitate change in the way schools operate and are run. The role of the principal has changed and requires different skills to succeed in the 21st century. However, there are few studes that focues on revealing the perspective of a principal who applied a change theory in a school setting and positively transformed a low performing school into a high performing school. The purpose of this qualitative autoethnography was to study a principal's leadership in a middle school culture as the principal attempted to transform the school from 2005-2008.The …

A Cost Surface Analysis Of Obsidian Use In The Wyoming Basin, Usa, David C. Harvey Apr 2012

A Cost Surface Analysis Of Obsidian Use In The Wyoming Basin, Usa, David C. Harvey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A trans-Holocene time averaged synthesis of obsidian use in the Wyoming Basin is presented through the analysis of published and unpublished obsidian source provenance reports. A caloric based cost surface model is used to evaluate whether or not ecological factors contributed to the low regional abundance of Yellowstone Plateau obsidian. The results of the cost surface analysis indicate that modeled caloric costs for the use of four key sources varies little across the region and rather than environmental variables, social factors likely structured the regional obsidian record. Least cost paths generated from the cost surface models were compared to regional …

Policy And Food Security: A Comparison Of Viet Nam And India, Roxanne Nicole Buckman Apr 2012

Policy And Food Security: A Comparison Of Viet Nam And India, Roxanne Nicole Buckman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The following project investigates the important links between state policy decisions and food security by comparing the cases of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the Republic of India. In this way, the project demonstrates how policy decisions impact food security by determining what a state does with its food resources. Each case study describes the types of policies pursued by the respective countries as well as the state of food (in)security within the population. The findings are then analyzed alongside one another to compare and contrast the different policy approaches and resulting food security situations. This analysis shows …

Ocean Wilderness In Theory And Practice, Bradley W. Barr Apr 2012

Ocean Wilderness In Theory And Practice, Bradley W. Barr

Fisheries

Wilderness preservation has been an important focus of resource conservation since the dwindling number of wild places was perceived by some as losing a valued part of our collective natural and cultural heritage. While wilderness preservation efforts have been almost entirely focused on the land, recently there has been growing interest in "ocean wilderness." However, implementation has been constrained by the lack of a common vision of how "wilderness" is applied to the ocean, and how such areas should be managed and preserved. The purpose of this work was to identify and evaluate potential definitions of ocean wilderness and the …

Population Genetics And Mixed Stock Analysis Of Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) With Molecular Genetics, Michael R. Garvin Apr 2012

Population Genetics And Mixed Stock Analysis Of Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) With Molecular Genetics, Michael R. Garvin

Fisheries

Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) are important for subsistence and commercial harvest in Alaska. Variability of returns to western Alaskan drainages that caused economic hardship for stakeholders has led to speculation about reasons, which may include both anthropogenic and environmental causes in the marine environment. Mixed stock analysis (MSA) compares genetic information from an individual caught at sea to a reference baseline of genotypes to assign it to its population of origin. Application of genetic baselines requires several complex steps that can introduce bias. The bias may reduce the accuracy of MSA and result in overly-optimistic evaluations of baselines. Moreover, some …

Talking About Motherhood Matters: Articulation Of Population Policies Through National Day Rally Speeches In Singapore, Jasmine E. Tan Apr 2012

Talking About Motherhood Matters: Articulation Of Population Policies Through National Day Rally Speeches In Singapore, Jasmine E. Tan

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Women’s reproductive rights have always been a site of contestation. The central question this paper seeks to answer is how motherhood is constructed through the repetition of population policies by government officials and how this articulation becomes the script through which motherhood is in turn performed. This paper examines the rhetorical construction of what it means to be a mother in Singapore through the analysis of National Day Rally Speeches. Two themes emerged from this analysis: (1) Motherhood is an expensive experience and, (2) Motherhood required lifestyle changes. By unwittingly painting motherhood as negative experiences, population policies in Singapore could …

Cross-Cultural Communication Within American And Chinese Colleagues In Multinational Organizations, Yue Li

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Globalization is a mantra nowadays that has been employed to describe the highly active exchange activities between countries and regions across the globe. It takes a multidimensional form, connecting people and things regardless of spatial and temporal confines, and permeating into all walks of life. Along with changes brought by this dynamic international interaction, a myriad of organizations, no longer isolated and static, are beginning to ride on this gravy train by expanding tentacles into every cranny and nook of the globe.

One of the challenges that is facing the multinational organizations is the increasing diversity of the workforce and …

Evaluating Bucknell's Waste Stream, Hallie S. Kennan Apr 2012

Evaluating Bucknell's Waste Stream, Hallie S. Kennan

Honors Theses

This thesis examines three questions regarding the content of Bucknell University‟s waste stream and the contributors to campus recycling and solid waste disposal. The first asks, “What does Bucknell‟s waste stream consist of?” To answer this question, I designed a campus-wide waste audit procedure that sampled one dumpster from each of the eleven „activity‟ types on campus in order to better understand Bucknell‟s waste composition. The audit was implemented during the Fall semester of the 2011-2012 school year. The waste from each dumpster was sorted into several recyclable and non-recyclable categories and then weighed individually. Results showed the Bison and …

An Exploration Of Undeclared Students' Expectations Of Experiences For Faculty Interactions And Co-Curricular Involvement, Lorie Anne Kittendorf Apr 2012

An Exploration Of Undeclared Students' Expectations Of Experiences For Faculty Interactions And Co-Curricular Involvement, Lorie Anne Kittendorf

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Student persistence and achievement are areas of significant concern for institutions of higher education. With national college graduation rates hovering in the 50% range, it is important for colleges and universities to understand which student characteristics and campus environments lead to greater success, as well as the expectations students have of the college experience.

Research on undeclared students is vast and dates back more than 70 years, and many of the seminal studies and respected research data have led to the perception that they are at higher risk of attrition and have lower levels of academic achievement than their declared …

Astronomy, Cosmology, And Religious Expression In The New Kingdom: A Study Of Late Ramesside Cosmological Funerary Scenes, Luke W. Breinig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Astronomical and cosmological tomb scenes found in New Kingdom tombs consist generally of three parts:scenes depicting the celestial diagram, including the northern constellations, tables listing star or decan names, sometimes known as star clocks or calendars, and cosmological texts which help to explain the religious, philosophical, and funerary significance of these scenes. During the 20th Dynasty, new types of star tables began to appear in conjunction with new cosmological funerary texts and novel ways of showing the celestial diagram. This thesis examines the relationship these scens and the accompanying texts, as well as the underlying religious and philosophical context of …

Oral Histories

Milagros is a former teacher in the Bronx who immigrated to the United States from Cuba. In her interview, she discussed her experience escaping from Castro’s government as well as the manner in which society had shaped her identity.

Prior to living in the United States, Milagros resided in Cuba for 20 years. She stated that in Cuba, race was not as important as it was in America. Instead, status was determined by which family you had been born into. However, she did say that neighbors in Cuba were like relatives to her family, and recounted incidents where she had …

Alternative Individual Cartridge Case Identification Techniques, Curtis H. Sedlacek Apr 2012

Alternative Individual Cartridge Case Identification Techniques, Curtis H. Sedlacek

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Individual cartridge case identification is an essential component of historic battlefield archeology. With individual cartridge case identification archeologists are able to track the movement of the combatants as they move across the battlefield, giving a highly detailed view of the past. While useful, current methods of individual cartridge case identification require expensive equipment and extensive training and time to conduct. In this thesis two alternative methods of cartridge case identification are evaluated in order to determine if recent developments in the areas of 3D scanning and statistical analysis can be utilized to develop new methods of individual cartridge case method. …
