Mapping Community Mindscapes: Visualizing Social Autobiography As Political Transformation And Mobilization, Emily C. Bluck Apr 2012

Mapping Community Mindscapes: Visualizing Social Autobiography As Political Transformation And Mobilization, Emily C. Bluck

Scripps Senior Theses

Historically, autobiography has been used to perpetuate neo-liberal ideologies. Yet, when autobiography becomes social and is used to engage political communities of color, political transformation is possible. This project, through the collaborative visualization of Asian American social biography using pedagogical and relational methods as a means for engagement, seeks to destabilize dominant notions of time and space, and provide a mechanism for the retention of and documentation of institutional, and social histories using the Asian American Student Union at Scripps College as the site for political praxis.

Alexandria And The Construction Of Urban Experience, Sara L. Bacon Apr 2012

Alexandria And The Construction Of Urban Experience, Sara L. Bacon

Scripps Senior Theses

Early Ptolemaic Alexandria provides a unique perspective on cultural interactions during the Hellenistic Period. With this idea in mind, I have tracked the cultural affiliation of the city from its foundation through the early years of the Ptolemaic dynasty. In order to do this, both literary and archaeological evidence, including various foundation myths for the city, the poetry of Theocritus and Herodas, papyrological evidence as well as the city plan and archaeological remains of the Serapeum, were analyzed. Using this evidence, this thesis attempts to describe the cultural state of the ancient city and the surrounding area in its early …

Extent And Nature Of Resource Sharing Among Local Health Departments, Joshua Vest, Gulzar H. Shah

Health Policy & Management: Faculty Presentations (2008-2022)

Objective: Collaborative arrangements between local health departments (LHDs) by which they share services, responsibilities, or staff, is a growing occurrence in the US. This phenomenon is referred to as regionalization, resource sharing, or intra-state resource sharing. Participants of this session will learn about the current state of resource sharing among LHDs in terms of the public health activities, nature of the relationships, and geography. We will also discuss which characteristics of LHDs are associated with resource-sharing.

Data Source: Data for this analysis come from the National Association of City & County Health Official's 2010 Profile of Local Health Departments. The …

An Analysis Of Uriay Culture And Gospel Presentation To The Uriay Tribe, Kaitlin R. Sones Apr 2012

An Analysis Of Uriay Culture And Gospel Presentation To The Uriay Tribe, Kaitlin R. Sones

Senior Honors Theses

The Uriay people group in Papua New Guinea is a remote animistic tribe that has just recently heard the Gospel. This people group is just one of the thousands of distinct cultures in this world, many of which have not yet received the good news of Jesus Christ. This thesis opens by analyzing culture and animism and culminates with an ethnographic description of the Uriay tribe based on personal observation and information collected from missionaries who have lived among the Uriay people for over ten years. The purpose of this thesis is to provide research on this remote people group …

Try These: Tackling Representations Of Rugby In Recent South African Texts, Anne Margaret Reef Apr 2012

Try These: Tackling Representations Of Rugby In Recent South African Texts, Anne Margaret Reef

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Rugby in South Africa has long been an important facet of white, male, and Afrikaner culture. Scholars concur that the sport has been profoundly associated with Afrikaner nationalism and power, and with the violences of the apartheid state. As a corollary, rugby has also been related to and influenced by constructions of apartheid hegemonic masculinity. This study examines representations of rugby in selected texts. Identifying a trope, it argues that in these works, rugby is used as a metonym to relate (in the sense of both "to narrate" and "to connect") other forms of violence in South African society. These …

The Eliza-Higgins Model: The Ideology, Rapport And Methods Of Dialect Acquisition, Stacey Cabaj Apr 2012

The Eliza-Higgins Model: The Ideology, Rapport And Methods Of Dialect Acquisition, Stacey Cabaj

Theses and Dissertations

George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion (1912) and its musical adaptation, My Fair Lady (1956) offer 20th century’s most famous example of dialect acquisition: the transformation of Eliza Doolittle under the tutelage of Professor Henry Higgins. The opportunity to work on Barksdale Theatre’s production of My Fair Lady (2012), both as the actress playing Eliza Doolittle and as a dialect coach for the production, prompted an analysis of the dialect pedagogy of Henry Higgins. The centenary of Pygmalion is also a prime juncture to document, in contrast or complement to Higgins’ model, contemporary theories and techniques of dialect pedagogy. Chapter one of …

The Case For Graphic Novels, Steven Hoover Apr 2012

The Case For Graphic Novels, Steven Hoover

Communications in Information Literacy

Many libraries and librarians have embraced graphic novels. A number of books, articles, and presentations have focused on the history of the medium and offered advice on building and maintaining collections, but very little attention has been given the question of how integrate graphic novels into a library's instructional efforts. This paper will explore the characteristics of graphic novels that make them a valuable resource for librarians who focus on research and information literacy instruction, identify skills and competencies that can be taught by the study of graphic novels, and will provide specific examples of how to incorporate graphic novels …

Freshwater Fish Biogeography In The Bering Glacier Region, Alaska, Heidi L. Weigner Apr 2012

Freshwater Fish Biogeography In The Bering Glacier Region, Alaska, Heidi L. Weigner

Biological Sciences

Bering Glacier, Alaska, is Earth's largest surging glacier, with surges occurring approximately every 20-30 years since 1900. Surges and subsequent retreats lead to a dynamic environment for aquatic communities, as glacial ice over-rides landscapes and new habitats form during glacial retreat. Lands around Bering Glacier are administered by the State of Alaska and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Purposes of this study are to characterize fish communities and provide information relevant to their management for BLM. Given Bering Glacier's remoteness, little information exists regarding its fish communities. Fish were collected over five summer field seasons (2002-2006), with 10 …

"That's A Hard Question": Undergraduate Students Talk About Culture, Caitlin N. Montague-Winebarger Apr 2012

"That's A Hard Question": Undergraduate Students Talk About Culture, Caitlin N. Montague-Winebarger

Education

In this project I examine the ability of undergraduate students to articulate a working definition of culture and cross-culture. The students were predominately elementary education majors, enrolled in one of two culture-based elective courses at the University of Alaska Fairbanks during the 2010-2011 school year. Through the use of semi-structured interviewing and participatory/observational autoethnographic fieldwork, I provide several viewpoints from which to look at this complex issue. Through the examination of historical and institutional documents, I show that the School of Education within the University has had a long-standing commitment to teacher education in the Alaskan context, including creating teachers …

First Order Estimation Of Calving Losses From Gulf Of Alaska Glaciers, Bob Mcnabb Apr 2012

First Order Estimation Of Calving Losses From Gulf Of Alaska Glaciers, Bob Mcnabb

2012 Research Day Posters

Despite its importance in projections of sea level rise, dynamic mass loss from tidewater glaciers remains poorly constrained and understood. Owing to this difficulty, very few long-term or estimates of dynamic losses exist, and regional estimates of dynamic loss are nonexistent. Many studies have highlighted the importance of Alaska glaciers to sea level rise (e.g., Berthier and others, 2010). In this study, we present a detailed record of length fluctuations of Gulf of Alaska (GOA) tidewater glaciers, and propose a method to estimate calving fluxes on a regional level.

Kids Getting Away With Learning: Student Perceptions Of Learning In One To One Laptop Programs, Mark Standley Apr 2012

Kids Getting Away With Learning: Student Perceptions Of Learning In One To One Laptop Programs, Mark Standley

Indigenous Studies

This research explores students' perceptions of learning in one to one laptop programs in rural Alaska. This research used constructing grounded theory methods by conducting five focus groups in rural high schools in order to gather and analyze data from the students themselves. The research intent was to let the students' words and experiences shape a new theory how about they learn with these laptop programs. From an epistemological standpoint the goal of this qualitative research was to create a more complete picture of learning in one to one programs using grounded data through gathering, analyzing, and working directly with …

Health And Empires: Implications For Political Development On The Health Of The Inhabitants Of Great Moravia (9th--10th Centuries), Megan Michelle Ellicott Apr 2012

Health And Empires: Implications For Political Development On The Health Of The Inhabitants Of Great Moravia (9th--10th Centuries), Megan Michelle Ellicott

Anthropology

The early medieval period was a time of great change in Europe. Politically thee empires ruled Europe: Charlemagne's Carolingian Empire, the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. During this time early cities began to form in Europe, and new patterns of settlement developed. Great Moravia was a state level society in the southeastern region of the Czech Republic during the late 9th and early 10th centuries. This thesis explores the impact of urban development on the health of its inhabitants. In order to do this, rural (Josefov and Lahovice) and urban (Mikulcice-Kostelisko) skeletal populations were examined for cribra orbitalia, …

Internal Classification Of The Alor-Pantar Language Family Using Computational Methods Applied To The Lexicon, Laura C. Robinson, Gary Holton Apr 2012

Internal Classification Of The Alor-Pantar Language Family Using Computational Methods Applied To The Lexicon, Laura C. Robinson, Gary Holton

Alaska Native Language Center Faculty

The non-Austronesian languages of Alor and Pantar in eastern Indonesia have been shown to be genetically related using the comparative method, but the identified phonological innovations are typologically common and do not delineate neat subgroups. We apply computational methods to recently-collected lexical data and are able to identify subgroups based on the lexicon. Crucially, the lexical data are coded for cognacy based on identified phonological innovations. This methodology can succeed even where phonological innovations themselves fail to identify subgroups, showing that computational methods using lexical data can be a powerful tool supplementing the comparative method.

Framing Complexity: Teachers And Students Use Of Technology In Alaska One To One Laptop Learning Environments, Robert E. Whicker Apr 2012

Framing Complexity: Teachers And Students Use Of Technology In Alaska One To One Laptop Learning Environments, Robert E. Whicker

Indigenous Studies

The topic for this dissertation is to investigate perceptions within the implementation of established one to one laptop learning programs in Alaska high schools. A primary purpose is to gain understanding of teacher and student perception of their technology use levels by establishing a level of adoption. A secondary purpose is to gain understanding of teacher perceptions regarding concerns and implementation concepts. The theoretical framework for this study used a concurrent mixed methods approach, beginning with a quantitative broad survey with supporting qualitative open-ended questions. The sample used for this study includes public high school teachers and students, who are …

Polishing The Mirror: A Multiple Methods Study Of The Relationship Between Teaching Style And The Application Of Technology In Alaska's Rural One To One Digital Classrooms, Larry S. Ledoux Apr 2012

Polishing The Mirror: A Multiple Methods Study Of The Relationship Between Teaching Style And The Application Of Technology In Alaska's Rural One To One Digital Classrooms, Larry S. Ledoux

Indigenous Studies

This mixed method survey study examined the inter-relationships between teaching styles and the depth of classroom-based technology applications used by teachers participating in 1:1 digitally enhanced classrooms in thirteen of Alaska's rural school districts. The promise of technology to catalyze the transformation of schools into learner centric environments preparing students to be 21st century learners has not been realized. Significant first order barriers have limited the digital learning resources necessary to systemically affect pedagogical change. During the last six years, various entities have sponsored digitally enhanced learning environments to stimulate the process of education reform. These initiatives, labeled as one-to-one …

Highland Hunters: Prehistoric Resource Use In The Yukon-Tanana Uplands, Gerad M. Smith Apr 2012

Highland Hunters: Prehistoric Resource Use In The Yukon-Tanana Uplands, Gerad M. Smith

Anthropology

The purpose of this study was to conduct a first approximation of explorations and excavations throughout the White Mountain and Steese Conservation areas during the summer field seasons of 2010 and 2011 in the Yukon Tanana Uplands. An analysis of the lithic artifacts from five site excavations (the Big Bend, Bachelor Creek, Bear Creek, US Creek and Cripple Creek) was then undertaken. These assemblages were then examined and modeled using risk-assessments, optimal resource use, and behavior processes in order to explore the interdependence of environment, ecology, and material culture that drove prehistoric subsistence cycles in this area. This archaeological research …
