Migration, Transnationalism, And The Spaces Of Class Identity, Philip F. Kelly Jun 2012

Migration, Transnationalism, And The Spaces Of Class Identity, Philip F. Kelly

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

To make sense of the diversity in contemporary understandings of class, thisarticle proposes a four-part typology, with class understood as “position,” “process,” “performance,” and “politics.” Each highlights a distinct dimension of class, but all are closely related to each other. Thearticle uses research on Filipino migration to Canada to show that the downward class mobility experienced by many immigrants can only be adequately understood when all of these dimensions of class are integrated into an analysis and when the process of immigration is understood in a transnational frame. Thearticle uses qualitative data collected from Filipino immigrants in Canada to show …

Human Impact On Atolls Leads To Coral Loss And Community Homogenisation: A Modeling Study, Bernhard Riegl, Charles R. C. Sheppard, Samuel J. Purkis Jun 2012

Human Impact On Atolls Leads To Coral Loss And Community Homogenisation: A Modeling Study, Bernhard Riegl, Charles R. C. Sheppard, Samuel J. Purkis

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

We explore impacts on pristine atolls subjected to anthropogenic near-field (human habitation) and far-field (climate and environmental change) pressure. Using literature data of human impacts on reefs, we parameterize forecast models to evaluate trajectories in coral cover under impact scenarios that primarily act via recruitment and increased mortality of larger corals. From surveys across the Chagos, we investigate the regeneration dynamics of coral populations distant from human habitation after natural disturbances. Using a size-based mathematical model based on a time-series of coral community and population data from 1999–2006, we provide hind- and forecast data for coral population dynamics within lagoons …

Community-Based Participatory Action Research: An Emerging Alternative, Bryan J. Lagae Jun 2012

Community-Based Participatory Action Research: An Emerging Alternative, Bryan J. Lagae

Open Access Theses

An integrative analysis is presented of positivism, shared epistemology, and the final emerging alternative: community-based participatory action research (CBPAR). The analysis includes how each philosophy defines, views, and analyzes a community. While overcoming the drawbacks to adopting social indicator analyses to study social life, CBPAR provides a strategy that uses collaboration, empowerment, and participatory democracy to engage communities. As part of this investigation, other shared epistemologies such as symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, and previous community-based methods are considered. CBPAR studies have had significant impact on public policy, so much so that communities sometimes “improvements” that they have wanted or needed because …

Lung Cancer Screening For The Poor And Underserved: Should Routine Screening Be Performed?, Vaibhav Verma, Vladimir K. Gotlieb, Joshua Fogel, Alan S. Multz, Geeti Sharma

Publications and Research

Background: Lung cancer is a leading cause of death in United States. A recent study using low dose CT scans for screening long term smokers for lung cancer has, for the first time, demonstrated reduction in mortality, although it is not a standard of care in the community yet.

Methods: We analyzed lung cancer data for stages 0 through 4 for 1,412 individuals from, a public hospital, Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) with patients of lower income, two private hospitals, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and Long Island Jewish Hospital (LIJ), with patients of higher income, with average household income …

Prototype For Monitoring And Forecasting Fall Foliage Coloration In Real Time From Satellite Data, Xiaoyang Zhang, Mitchell D. Goldberg, Yunyue Yu Jun 2012

Prototype For Monitoring And Forecasting Fall Foliage Coloration In Real Time From Satellite Data, Xiaoyang Zhang, Mitchell D. Goldberg, Yunyue Yu

GSCE Faculty Publications

While determining vegetation phenology from the time series of historical satellite data has been widely investigated throughout the last decade, little effort has been devoted to real-time monitoring and short-term forecasting. The latter is more important for numerical weather modeling, ecosystem forecasting, forest and crop management, and health risk warning. In this study we developed a prototype approach for the real-time monitoring and short-term forecasting of fall foliage status (including low coloration, moderate coloration, near-peak coloration, peak coloration, and post-peak coloration) using temporal satellite observations. The algorithm combined the climatology of vegetation phenology and temporally available satellite observations to establish …

Political Emotions: Toward A Fresh Perspective On Collective Emotion In Composition Work, Ingrid Jonna Gilfus Jun 2012

Political Emotions: Toward A Fresh Perspective On Collective Emotion In Composition Work, Ingrid Jonna Gilfus

Writing Program – Dissertations

This dissertation examines theories of emotion in politically contentious discourse in order to better understand the implications for teachers and students in composition classrooms where critical pedagogical practices lead to contentious political work. I suggest that partly as a result of the social and political turn in composition studies, the expectation for disrupting the normative political values and beliefs of students has become part of the curriculum in many writing classrooms. Yet teachers and students charged with such learning goals may be largely unaware of and unprepared for the role emotion might play in this teaching and learning situation. I …

Asian Hedge Fund Report, Melvyn Teo Jun 2012

Asian Hedge Fund Report, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

We survey the Asian hedge fund landscape and shed light on the size, investment region, strategy, and performance metrics of funds operating in Asia. Our findings indicate that hedge funds in the region typically maintain close physical proximity to their investment markets. Institutional quality hedge funds with assets under management greater than US$100m tend to focus on Greater China and Japan. Relative to Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia, Singapore harbors the most diverse group of hedge funds in terms of investment strategy. Between January 2000 and December 2011, Greater China focused funds have on average outperformed hedge funds investing in …

The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson Jun 2012

The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eruvin are an innovative solution to the logistical “problem” of carrying on the weekly Sabbath. Boundaries that symbolically extend the walls of private homes into the public sphere, eruvin allow Orthodox Jews to carry objects outside of their homes on the Sabbath, a seemingly simple act that would otherwise be prohibited. Constructed according to intricate Rabbinic specifications, eruvin use existing architectural elements such as walls, train tracks, roadways and telephone wires, as well as natural features like rivers to create a continuous boundary. This paper will examine the theoretical significance of creating such a space. My argument maintains that beyond …

Relative Efficiency Of Fishing Gears And Investigation Of Resource Availability In Tropical Demersal Scalefish Fisheries Frdc Report – Project 2006/031, Stephen J. Newman, Euan S. Harvey, Ben M. Rome, Dianne L. Mclean, Craig L. Skepper Jun 2012

Relative Efficiency Of Fishing Gears And Investigation Of Resource Availability In Tropical Demersal Scalefish Fisheries Frdc Report – Project 2006/031, Stephen J. Newman, Euan S. Harvey, Ben M. Rome, Dianne L. Mclean, Craig L. Skepper

Fisheries Research Reports

This project identified that there is substantial spatial variation in the demersal fish assemblages in the NDSF with some species more abundant in the north of the fishery and others in the south. At finer scales within sites and depths there is spatial variation associated with different habitats (e.g. sand vs sponge gardens or reef).

"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy Jun 2012

"Sewing A Safety Net: Scarborough's Maritime Community, 1747-1765", Charles Foy

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

From 1747 to 1765 Scarborough created a safety net to keep its maritime dependents from becoming impoverished. A web of kinship connections that permitted sailors to move between land and sea as well as between maritime roles as they aged; the employment of maritime servants; the extensive hiring of elderly seamen; the use of the Seamen’s Sixpence after legislative reform in 1747 to develop locally operated seamen’s hospitals for the benefit of sailors and their families; and strong community support of the hospitals worked together to provide a social safety net that was, by eighteenth century standards, robust and effective.

Reconceptualising Resources: A Critique Of Service-Dominant Logic, Norah Campbell, Aidan O'Driscoll, Michael Saren

Conference papers

This paper examines the interactive relationship between intangible, human capabilities (operant resources) and tangible, physical assets (operand resources) in an era of global interconnectedness. It does so within the context of service-dominant logic and the challenge of sustainability in a world of resource scarcity. It challenges conventional ideas about the superiority of certain kinds of resources and it confronts a pervasive culture of demateriality both in marketing and contemporary post-industrial theory – the idea that ‘stuff’ does not count. Building on calls for a revised theory of economics and society, this paper offers a parsimonious model of a more holistic …

Redefining, Crafting, And Re/Presenting Contemporary Ethnicities: Honduran National Identity, 1994–2006, Cordelia A. Frewen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, Fourth World populations, including those in Honduras, have been steadily gaining partial recognition of cultural rights; yet often official discourses of national identity continue to subsume cultural traditions of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. Honduras's heterogeneous ethnic pluralism has historically been combined to promote a more cohesive national identity of a homogenized, mayanized, indo-Hispanic mestizaje. Exclusion and mis- or under-representation of indigenous groups is reinforced by popular imagination, particularly in the cultural heritage and tourism sectors. Firmly situated within regional Latin American and global trends, over the past two decades, official discourse on …

Investigating Presentational Change In Company Annual Reports: An Extension, Thomas Zeller, Brian Stanko, Han Jin Jun 2012

Investigating Presentational Change In Company Annual Reports: An Extension, Thomas Zeller, Brian Stanko, Han Jin

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study extends previous work with a seven year (2004-10) longitudinal investigation of annual report design for Standard & Poor’s (S&P) 500 companies. Prior research identifies the normalization of annual report design, with particular attention to voluntary disclosures, such as charts and graphs and other material designed to impress the shareholders and/or potential investors. Our findings show two distinct trends in annual report design. The first trend is to include Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) Form 10-K, which includes a complete set of financial statements and extensive nonfinancial information in the annual report to the shareholders. The second trend is …

Hands In The Pockets Of Mercurial Donors: How Three Theories Explain Ngo Responses To Shifting Funding Priorities, Khaldoun Abouassi Jun 2012

Hands In The Pockets Of Mercurial Donors: How Three Theories Explain Ngo Responses To Shifting Funding Priorities, Khaldoun Abouassi

Public Administration - Dissertations

The NGO-donor relationship has become understood as exceptionally volatile. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in developing countries rely heavily on foreign donor funding and potential over-reliance on donors becomes apparent. The research at hand concentrates on the relationship between environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international donor agencies in the local setting of a developing country. It explores the potential impact of changing funding priorities on NGO behavior and decision-making. It raises two questions: How do NGOs respond to changes in donor funding objectives? Why do NGOs react the way they do?

NGOs react to changes in the external environment in different ways …
