Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek Dec 2012

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek

Honors Theses

In the next few years, many teachers will be challenged in new ways. Student engagement will be at a premium and state standards will be more specific, shifting their focus towards college readiness, integration of curriculum, and developing sound reasoning and critical thinking skills. While the education field is accustomed to adapting and adjusting “on the go”, it may be ill-prepared for this fresh round of changes. Teachers and curriculum directors need resources to help them adapt the classrooms to reflect the more comprehensive design implied by the new standards (Next Generation Science Standards, 2012). This paper promotes a spiral …

The Role Of Interdisciplinary Gis And Data Curation Librarians In Enhancing Authentic Scientific Research In The Classroom, Benjamin D. Branch, Michael Fosmire

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Data science is a recently evolved area of scientific inquiry, where data, often collected by others, is analyzed by independent investigators to draw new conclusions. As such, data literacy needs to be incorporated into authentic research activities. The earth sciences in particular have a trove of data that resides in national data centers as well as individual investigators’ labs, which can be repurposed to provide the inputs for students to make their own inquiries into the data. With the amount of data available, students can make more substantive conclusions than if relying just on data they’ve collected themselves.

The Dolor’S Traslacion Ritual As Conflict And Compromise, Ramon Felipe Sarmiento Dec 2012

The Dolor’S Traslacion Ritual As Conflict And Compromise, Ramon Felipe Sarmiento

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle traces the history and meaning of the traslacion or ritualtransfer of the Marian image Dolor in Catanduanes province betweenthe origin village and the parish center. In the course of the twentiethcentury, the location of the image and the control of its devotion have been contested. The ritual first emerged as a compromise between advocates of popular and institutional devotional forms, which eventuated in the fullblown religious procession at present. However, the persistent struggle between the parish center and the village has made the traslacion into an arena for enacting power and the politics of place. Keywords: ritualization • religion • …

The Past And Future Of Community-Based Forest Management In The Philippines, Jungho Suh Dec 2012

The Past And Future Of Community-Based Forest Management In The Philippines, Jungho Suh

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Community-based forest management (CBFM) schemes are often cited asideal for rehabilitating denuded forestlands and alleviating upland povertyin developing countries. Thisarticle examines the Philippine CBFM in thecontext of the forestry industry: It tracks the outcome of communitybased reforestation and undertakes a simple input-output analysis. It presents three propositions for the future success of CBFM in the Philippines. First, it must secure farmers’ access to financial returns from tree plantations. Second, industrial policy must link the demand for timber from other industries to the forestry industry. Third, CBFM needs to be integrated with livelihood opportunities for the poor. Keywords: deforestation • forest rehabilitation …

The Flow Of Water, Power, And Ideas: Water Commodification In Cape Town, South Africa And The Stratified Experiences Of Time And Space Compression, Jenna Washburn Dec 2012

The Flow Of Water, Power, And Ideas: Water Commodification In Cape Town, South Africa And The Stratified Experiences Of Time And Space Compression, Jenna Washburn

Master's Theses

I use the neoliberalization of the water sector in Cape Town, South Africa in order to test my theory of unequal development. I assert that the neoliberal economic practices of water commodification, business-friendly tariff policies, and prepaid management devices keep people along the periphery from accessing water, power, and ideas – thus causing a stratification of time and space compression between the core and the periphery.

By painting a theoretical picture of world cities, I wish to complicate the dominant views of time/space compression and suggest that, much like development and arguably because of it, time and space compression actually …

The Maritime Archaeology Of West Africa In The Atlantic World: Investigations At Elmina, Ghana, Gregory David Cook Dec 2012

The Maritime Archaeology Of West Africa In The Atlantic World: Investigations At Elmina, Ghana, Gregory David Cook

Anthropology - Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the first maritime archaeology research project conducted in Ghana, specifically off the town of Elmina in the Central Region. Survey and diver investigations resulted in the discovery of a mid-seventeenth century shipwreck, which archaeological and archival research suggests may be the Dutch West India Company vessel Groeningen that sank after arriving to Elmina on a trading voyage in 1647. The site lies approximately 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) southeast of Elmina and is characterized by a mass of trade goods, including brass and pewter basins, brass manillas, lead rolls, trade beads, pins, cowrie shells, as well as …

In The Wake Of The Spill: Environmental Views Along The Gulf Coast, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford, Jessica D. Ulrich Dec 2012

In The Wake Of The Spill: Environmental Views Along The Gulf Coast, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Thomas G. Safford, Jessica D. Ulrich

Sociology

Abstract

Objectives

We analyze patterns in environmental views of Gulf Coast residents, in the wake of the 2010 oil spill. To what extent do spill-related and other environmental views vary with individual characteristics, personal experience with the spill, or characteristics of place?

Methods

About 2,000 residents of selected coastal regions in Louisiana and Florida were interviewed by telephone in late summer 2010.

Results

One-quarter of the respondents said that their environmental views had changed as a result of the spill. Despite reporting more change, more spill effects, and greater threats from climate-induced sea-level rise, Louisiana respondents were less likely to …

Selected Characteristics For Nebraska Counties From The 2007-2011 American Community Survey, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar) Dec 2012

Selected Characteristics For Nebraska Counties From The 2007-2011 American Community Survey, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Past Publications

On December 6, 2012, the U.S. Census Bureau released five-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for the combined years of 2007 through 2011, making available social, economic, housing and demographic statistics for every community in Nebraska and the nation. Also available are estimates for Nebraska’s counties.

The data are based on a rolling national sample survey mailed to about 2 million addresses each year, resulting in nearly 2 million final interviews each year from 2007 through 2011. By pooling several years of survey responses, the ACS can generate detailed statistical portraits of smaller geographies such as counties. The Census Bureau …

A Truly Radical Idea In Social Studies Education: Teach The State Standards, Richard Gardiner Dec 2012

A Truly Radical Idea In Social Studies Education: Teach The State Standards, Richard Gardiner

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

State social studies standards are reflective of the concepts of Bloom’s taxonomy, emphasizing the development of higher order thinking skills. Standardized social studies tests, on the other hand, are not reflective of Bloom’s taxonomy and almost exclusively test for memorization and identification. In other words, the standards target very different objectives than the standardized tests are designed to assess. If, then, the central objective is to achieve adequate or higher standardized test scores, we must admit that it is not “standards-based” education that is desired, but rather test-focused instruction.

Global Journeys: From Transnationalism To Diaspora, Nadja C. Johnson Dec 2012

Global Journeys: From Transnationalism To Diaspora, Nadja C. Johnson

Journal of International and Global Studies

The emerging interest in diasporic studies has recently begun to permeate various academic disciplines, none more so than cultural studies. Today, there are numerous articles, books, and journals that have begun to engage in heated discussions on the importance of recognizing and understanding diaspora communities as collective transnational organizations and movements. However, sociology, the discipline out of which traditional migration theory emerged, has seemingly been more reluctant to embrace the concept of diaspora. In this article, I initiate a much needed conversation between traditional sociological migration theory and theories of diaspora emerging out of cultural studies. I look at the …

Vocational Rehabilitation (Vr) Approaches To Job Development, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Dec 2012

Vocational Rehabilitation (Vr) Approaches To Job Development, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies provide a range of services to help people with disabilities become employed. How services are delivered, however, depends on several factors including client interests and abilities as well as economic opportunities within the local community. For better or worse, rural and urban clients face vastly different employment landscapes. For instance, USDA Economic Resource Service data indicate that rural people earn lower wages and experience lower employment rates (ERS, 2012). Rural counties also have fewer full-time jobs per capita, particularly in skilled labor sectors (ERS, 2012; Parker, 2003). Urban areas have higher employment rates in professional and …

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Publications

In an effort to better understand the ancestral state of the human distal gut microbiome, we examine feces retrieved from archaeological contexts (coprolites). To accomplish this, we pyrosequenced the 16S rDNA V3 region from duplicate coprolite samples recovered from three archaeological sites, each representing a different depositional environment: Hinds Cave (~8000 years B.P.) in the southern United States, Caserones (1600 years B.P.) in northern Chile, and Rio Zape in northern Mexico (1400 years B.P.). Clustering algorithms grouped samples from the same site. Phyletic representation was more similar within sites than between them. A Bayesian approach to source-tracking was used to …
