Registration, Attendance, And Reality: African-Americans Engaged In Sat Preparation, Don Coleman Oct 2012

Registration, Attendance, And Reality: African-Americans Engaged In Sat Preparation, Don Coleman

Theses and Dissertations

There is limited research into the persistence, participation, and efforts of African American students in their preparation for college admission exams (SAT, ACT). Registration, attendance, and the experienced reality of African American students who voluntarily enrolled in an SAT prep program as well as perceptions of African American instructors were the foci of this mixed methods action research. This study examined the development of a Saturday SAT preparation program over an 18 month period. Theoretical frameworks of Stereotype Threat (STT) (Steele, 1992; Steele & Aronson, 1995) and schooling effects (Diamond, 2007; Kao & Thompson, 2003; Ladson-Billings 1995, 1997; Starratt, 2003; …

A New Green's Function Formulation For Modeling Homogeneous Objects In Layered Medium, Yongpin P. Chen, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang Oct 2012

A New Green's Function Formulation For Modeling Homogeneous Objects In Layered Medium, Yongpin P. Chen, Weng Cho Chew, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new Green's function formulation is developed systematically for modeling general homogeneous (dielectric or magnetic) objects in a layered medium. The dyadic form of the Green's function is first derived based on the pilot vector potential approach. The matrix representation in the moment method implementation is then derived by applying integration by parts and vector identities. The line integral issue in the matrix representation is investigated, based on the continuity property of the propagation factor and the consistency of the primary term and the secondary term. The extinction theorem is then revisited in the inhomogeneous background and a surface integral …

Development Of A Ground Based Remote Sensing Approach For Direct Evaluation Of Aerosol-Cloud Interaction, Bomidi Lakshmi Madhavan, Yuzhe He, Yonghua Wu, Barry Gross, Fred Moshary, Samir Ahmed

Publications and Research

The possible interaction and modification of cloud properties due to aerosols is one of the most poorly understood mechanisms within climate studies, resulting in the most significant uncertainty as regards radiation budgeting. In this study, we explore direct ground based remote sensing methods to assess the Aerosol-Cloud Indirect Effect directly, as space-borne retrievals are not directly suitable for simultaneous aerosol/cloud retrievals. To illustrate some of these difficulties, a statistical assessment of existing multispectral imagers on geostationary (e.g., GOES)/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite retrievals of the Cloud Droplet Effective Radius (Reff) showed significant biases especially at larger solar zenith angles, …

Generalized Modal Expansion Of Electromagnetic Field In 2-D Bounded And Unbounded Media, Qi I. Dai, Weng Cho Chew, Yat Hei Lo, Yang G. Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang Oct 2012

Generalized Modal Expansion Of Electromagnetic Field In 2-D Bounded And Unbounded Media, Qi I. Dai, Weng Cho Chew, Yat Hei Lo, Yang G. Liu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A generalized modal expansion theory is presented to investigate and illustrate the physics of wave-matter interaction within arbitrary two-dimensional (2-D) bounded and unbounded electromagnetic problems. We start with the bounded case where the field excited by any sources is expanded with a complete set of biorthogonal eigenmodes. In regard to non-Hermitian or nonreciprocal problems, an auxiliary system is constructed to seek for the modal-expansion solution. We arrive at the unbounded case when the boundary tends to infinity or is replaced by the perfectly matched layer (PML). Modes are approximately categorized into two types: trapped modes and radiation modes, which respond …

Reading Between The Lines: Charging Instruments At The Ictr And The Icc, Claire Knittel

Pace Law Review

International criminal procedure, including the principle of notice, has grown exponentially from the Nuremburg Trials conducted after WWII, but the tribunals of today still face many sticky procedural issues. This Article will focus on two problems that the ICTR and the International Criminal Court (ICC), respectively, have faced with regard to notice. Part I reviews the jurisprudence of the ICTR and ICC, focusing particularly on requirements of notice and the requirements of the charging instruments in each tribunal. Part II discusses in detail a problem that each tribunal is facing: vagueness in the indictment at the ICTR and informal changes …

Identity Crisis: Class Certification, Aggregate Proof, And How Rule 23 May Be Self-Defeating The Policy For Which It Was Established, J. Britton Whitbeck Oct 2012

Identity Crisis: Class Certification, Aggregate Proof, And How Rule 23 May Be Self-Defeating The Policy For Which It Was Established, J. Britton Whitbeck

Pace Law Review

Class actions suits developed in the United States as a form of “group litigation,” an alternative to the impracticability or inequities of separate, individual actions of a similarly situated class of plaintiffs and, eventually, defendants. Congressional passage of the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (CAFA) provided the federal courts with expounded diversity jurisdiction for the purpose of “assur[ing] fairer outcomes for class members and defendants.” However, recent circuit splits regarding class certification under Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) and the use of aggregate proof in certifying classes have, in an ironic twist of legal …

Travel Abroad, Sue At Home 2012: Forum Non Conveniens & The Enforcement Of Forum Selection And Mandatory Arbitration Clauses, Thomas A. Dickerson

Pace Law Review

A common litigation strategy is to sue in the U.S. in federal or state court against a solvent defendant subject to long-arm jurisdiction and the application of U.S. common law or statutory law. Such cases raise a variety of complex liability and procedural issues including liability shifting, jurisdiction, forum non conveniens, and choice of law. This Article will identify various types of travel accidents abroad, and discuss the doctrine of forum non conveniens and the enforceability of forum selection and mandatory arbitration clauses in travel consumer contracts.

Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven A. Samson Oct 2012

Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven A. Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The early nineteenth century in America was a period in which the idea of religious liberty came to be worked out in practice in a setting of growing diversity. The immediate effect of the dissolution of state religious establishments was to strengthen the vitality and prestige of the churches themselves. Before the end of the century, the church historian Philip Schaff could regard as normal ‘a free church in a free state, or a selfsupporting and self-governing Christianity in independent but friendly relation to the civil government.’

May 68 And French Literary Production: A Periodization Of Modern Revolutionary Writing In The Works Of Conrad Detrez, Monique Wittig, And Jean Genet, Arthur F. Tang Oct 2012

May 68 And French Literary Production: A Periodization Of Modern Revolutionary Writing In The Works Of Conrad Detrez, Monique Wittig, And Jean Genet, Arthur F. Tang

Open Access Dissertations

This study proposes a renewed consideration of May 68 French literary production through a periodization of Modern Revolutionary Writing. The doxa advanced by the critical literature suggests the revolutionary dimensions of May 68 failed to impact substantively on cultural production in France. In the writings of Conrad Detrez, Monique Wittig, and Jean Genet, a different conclusion is reached through textual analyses of structural synchronicity and ad rem narrative interactions with the historic marker. Rethinking and critically revisiting several interpretations of the relation between France’s May 68 “revolution” and literary and cultural production, the texts at stake are read as poetical …

The Rise Of Turkey And The New Mediterranean Challenges And Opportunities For Energy Cooperation In A Region In Transition, Simone Tagliapietra Oct 2012

The Rise Of Turkey And The New Mediterranean Challenges And Opportunities For Energy Cooperation In A Region In Transition, Simone Tagliapietra

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper, presenting a wide range of issues related to the role of Turkey in the Mediterranean energy context, aims to provide a comprehensive framework of understanding of the growing strategic relevance of Turkey for both the European Union and the overall Euro-Mediterranean region. In particular, the paper focuses on the EU-Turkey energy relations and outlines the crucial role of natural gas in enhancing energy cooperation between the two players. In 2010 about 80% of EU gas imports derived from only three suppliers: Russian Federation, Norway and Algeria. This heavy dependence on such a few suppliers stimulated the European Commission …
