Calibration Of Multibeam Echo Sounders: A Comparison Between Two Methodologies, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber
Calibration Of Multibeam Echo Sounders: A Comparison Between Two Methodologies, Carlo Lanzoni, Thomas C. Weber
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Multibeam echo sounders (MBES) are widely used in applications like seafloor imaging, fisheries, and habitat mapping. Calibration of acoustic backscatter is an important aspect of understanding and validating the performance of a MBES. Combined transmit/receive beampattern calibrations were performed on a 200 kHz Reson Seabat 7125 MBES in the acoustic tank of the University of New Hampshire utilizing two different methodologies. The first methodology employs fixed standard target spheres and a high accuracy/high resolution rotation mechanism. This method, similar to that proposed by Foote et al ["Protocols forcalibrating multibeam sonar", J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 117(4), 2005], is designed for a …

Effects On Resilience Of Caregivers Of Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Role Of Positive Cognitions, Abir K. Bekhet, Norah L. Johnson, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
BACKGROUND: Approximately 2.8 million people in the United States are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Family caregivers manage many aspects of their care, which is demanding, overwhelming, and can affect their mental health. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of caregiver burden (risk factor) and positive cognitions (protective factors) on resourcefulness(resilience indicator) in 95 caregivers of persons with ASD. DESIGN: Descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional. RESULTS: Positive cognitions explained 32% of the variance in resourcefulness, F(1, 93) = 44.49, p < .001, and as positive cognitions increased, caregivers’ resourcefulness increased. A substantial drop in the beta weight of caregiver burden from B = −.36 to −.04 when positive cognitions was entered the equation suggested that positive cognitions mediated the effect …

Teaching Quality And Performance Among Experienced Teachers In Malaysia, Siti Rafiah Abd Hamid, Sharifah Sariah Syed Hassan, Nik Ahmad Hisham Ismail
Teaching Quality And Performance Among Experienced Teachers In Malaysia, Siti Rafiah Abd Hamid, Sharifah Sariah Syed Hassan, Nik Ahmad Hisham Ismail
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The role of teachers has evolved from merely being teacher-centered to one that is student centered and the skills required for a quality teacher are changing too. Assessing teacher’s effectiveness will not be a straight forward attempt by solely examining students’ achievements or students’ perceptions of their teachers’ attributes. A careful examination of the teaching concepts, one as a form of “labor and profession” (Firestone & Bader, 1991); or the other as a “craft and art” (Grimmett & MacKinnon, 1992) will indicate that it involves teacher’s cognitive ability and interpersonal skills (soft skills) which enhance teacher’s performance in the classroom. …

The Teachers’ Role In Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Programs: Implications For Teacher Education., Laura Scholes, Christian Jones, Colleen Stieler-Hunt, Ben Rolfe, Kay Pozzebon
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In response to the diverse number of child sexual abuse (CSA) prevention programs currently implemented in school contexts, this paper examines key considerations for selecting such initiatives and the multiplicity of understandings required to inform facilitation of contextually relevant prevention curriculum. First, the paper examines concerns about the lack of explicit professional development for educators concerning child protection, and the need to develop understandings about prevention program best practices within pre-service and in-service training. Second, drawing on a systematic review of literature, the paper identifies five key considerations to inform teachers’ selection and facilitation of CSA prevention curriculum in school …

51/1 | ‘Akko I :The 1991–1998 Excavations: The Crusader-Period Pottery, Part 1: Text, Edna J. Stern
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This volume, which comprises two parts: text and plates, is the first of the series documenting the results of the large-scale IAA excavations at ‘Akko during the years 1991–1998. It presents the Crusader-period pottery (12th–13th centuries CE), the largest pottery assemblage of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem to be studied from a site in the Levant to date. An important component of this assemblage is the wide variety of imported ceramic wares from regions throughout the western and eastern Mediterranean, some not previously identified in Crusader-period contexts in the Levant. This assemblage is important for the study of trade and …

Cyberterrorism In The Context Of Contemporary International Law, Yaroslav Shiryaev
Cyberterrorism In The Context Of Contemporary International Law, Yaroslav Shiryaev
San Diego International Law Journal
The present Article addressed the legal issues surrounding cyberterrorism. In the first chapter, the author explains why cyberterrorism should be described as “the use of electronic networks taking the form of a cyber-attack to commit a) a substantive act criminalized by the existing legal instruments prohibiting terrorism, or b) an act of terrorism under international customary law.” Further, with a special emphasis on existing anti-terrorism conventions and customary international law, it was demonstrated which actors are likely to engage in acts of cyberterrorism (non-state actors, corporations and individuals), as well as which targets are protected by law and which aims …

The 2012 U.S.-Mexico Agreement On Transboundary Hydrocarbon Reservoirs In The Gulf Of Mexico: A Blueprint For Progress Or A Recipe For Conflict?, Jorge A. Vargas
San Diego International Law Journal
This Article is divided into four parts. Parts I and II describe each of the four previous U.S.-Mexico maritime delimitation treaties of 1970, 1976, 1978, and 2000. These treaties represent different degrees of progress in the process of completing the maritime boundaries that geographical contiguity imposes upon these contiguous countries. This was a slow and careful process that spanned almost half a century. Part III analyzes the 2012 U.S.-Mexico Agreement on Transboundary Hydrocarbon Reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico from an international law perspective, with special reference to the interests of the United States and Mexico. Finally, Part IV advances …

Part II provides a historical analysis of the united states’ attitude towards same-sex unions before describing current legislation regarding same-sex couples. Part III describes canada’s recognition of same-sex marriage and support of immigration equality, comparing and contrasting the canadian approach with the united states’ approach. Part IV explains the current legal and financial issues that bi-national …

This paper describes Preformed Particle Gel (PPG) treatments for in-depth fluid diversion in four injection wells located in the northern section of the Lamadian reservoir, Daqing oilfield, China, which is a sandstone reservoir with thick heterogeneous pay zones. Forty-six producers were connected to the four treated injectors with an average water cut of 95.4% before PPG treatments. A large volume (more than 1 000 m3) of PPG suspension with concentrations of 1 900-2 500 mg/L and particle sizes of 0.06-3.0 mm was injected into each well, each injection spanning approximately four months. The injection PPG suspension volumes range …

A Call To Action—Examining Nepal’S Post-Conflict Strategy Toward Persons Accused Of Gross Human Rights Abuses, Jennifer Chiang
A Call To Action—Examining Nepal’S Post-Conflict Strategy Toward Persons Accused Of Gross Human Rights Abuses, Jennifer Chiang
Fordham Law Review
This Note analyzes Nepal’s attempts to establish accountability and the rule of law in the aftermath of its ten-year civil war. It compares Nepal’s treatment of persons implicated in gross human rights violations with the international human rights legal framework surrounding a state’s international obligations, particularly in its use of transitional justice mechanisms. It argues that Nepal’s failure to bring either administrative sanctions or criminal prosecutions against officials accused of human rights abuses—and its reliance instead on truth commissions—undermines the rule of law and violates the country’s international human rights obligations.
