The Meaning Students Make As Participants In Short-Term Immersion Programs, Susan R. Jones, Heather T. Rowan-Kenyon, S. Mei-Yen Ireland, Elizabeth K. Niehaus, Kristan Cilente Skendall

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to present the results of a multi-site case study designed to investigate students’ experiences as participants in four week-long immersion programs (New York City, Peru, the Czech Republic, Chicago). Results highlight the significance of the context of the trips and specific characteristics of the trip (e.g., getting out of the bubble, boundary crossing, and personalizing), which served as the springboard for learning and meaning making. In particular, meaning making focused on developing new understandings of social issues, privilege, and stereotypes, reframing experiences upon participants’ return, and shifting sense of purpose and career planning.

Whose Water Is It Anyway? Comparing The Water Rights Frameworks Of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Georgia, Alabama, And Florida, M. D. Smolen, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Bekki Harjo

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In most states surface waters, (streams, lakes, and coastal waters) are owned by the public. On the other hand, ground water may be privately or publicly owned. Because all waters are linked through the hydrologic cycle, and the hydrologic cycle is not confined within any geographic or political boundary, the question of ownership is generally replaced by one of who has the right to manage, divert, use, or sell the water.

The Effect Of Advertising-Focused, Short-Term Study Abroad Programs On Students’ Worldviews, Frauke Hachtmann Jan 2012

The Effect Of Advertising-Focused, Short-Term Study Abroad Programs On Students’ Worldviews, Frauke Hachtmann

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Global employers in the advertising industry are increasingly interested in hiring students with intercultural communication skills and cultural experience. While the benefits of long-term study abroad programs are well documented, this study focuses on advertising-specific, short-term study abroad programs. The purpose was to explore the effectiveness of such programs on students’ worldviews using a mixed methods design. The results show that students displayed lower levels of ethnocentrism after participating in short-term, advertising-focused study abroad programs. In addition, five qualitative themes emerged: an awareness of and appreciation for the out-group, an increased awareness of the in-group, the importance of communication, a …

Integrity And Retention Of Ear-Tag Radiotransmitters In Domestic Cattle And Feral Horses, Bryan M. Kluever, Laura Lagos, Stewart W. Breck, Larry D. Howery, Manuel L. Sanmartín, David L. Bergman, Felipe Bárcena Jan 2012

Integrity And Retention Of Ear-Tag Radiotransmitters In Domestic Cattle And Feral Horses, Bryan M. Kluever, Laura Lagos, Stewart W. Breck, Larry D. Howery, Manuel L. Sanmartín, David L. Bergman, Felipe Bárcena

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Radiotelemetry is an important tool for wildlife management and research, but in some cases attachment of neck collars can be problematic. An alternative in large mammals is to attach transmitters to the ear, though little is published about ear-tag radiotransmitter integrity (i.e., how long a transmitter emits a useful signal) and retention (i.e., how long a transmitter remains attached to an animal). Here we report eartag transmitter integrity and retention from 2 studies monitoring free-ranging calves (Bos taurus) in eastern Arizona, USA, and feral horse (Equus ferus) foals in northwestern Spain. Transmitter integrity and retention was …

The Impact Of University Patenting On Mobility Of Scientists, Xi Ye Jan 2012

The Impact Of University Patenting On Mobility Of Scientists, Xi Ye

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

After the passage of Bayh-Dole Act, universities have been actively involved in patenting. At the same time, the booming of university patenting has brought up huge controversies and debates in academia. A large body of literature is devoted, from a broad macro-level view, to investigate the impact of intellectual property rights (IPR) on the research activities of universities. However, very few empirical studies have been conducted to study the impact of university patenting on the mobility of individuals who have been granted these patents. This study, aiming to provide a different insight to the extant literature, employs data from U.S. …

The Impact Of Perceived Csr On Employee Performance And Turnover Intention: An Examination Of The Mediating Effect Of Organizational Justice And Organization-Based Self-Esteem, Alicia Ting Shiun Ho Jan 2012

The Impact Of Perceived Csr On Employee Performance And Turnover Intention: An Examination Of The Mediating Effect Of Organizational Justice And Organization-Based Self-Esteem, Alicia Ting Shiun Ho

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has spanned across a few decades and in various fields. Yet only a handful of academic studies have investigated the relationship between CSR and a commonly neglected stakeholder – the employees. The employees are an essential part of the organization and will be highly influenced by the CSR initiatives carried out by the organization. In my paper, I intend to bridge the gap between CSR and the employee. A theoretical model is presented to show how employees' perception of CSR subsequently impacts their performance and turnover intentions, mediated by organizational justice and organization-based self-esteem. …

Assessing Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Women Newly Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Ashleigh Kristina Smith Jan 2012

Assessing Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Women Newly Diagnosed With Breast Cancer, Ashleigh Kristina Smith

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

This prospective, descriptive study was designed to explore the baseline cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors of women newly diagnosed with breast cancer prior to receiving treatment with anthracyclines and/or trastuzumab. Women diagnosed with breast cancer are at risk for developing CVD and may experience increased risk factors related to breast cancer diagnoses and treatments. The specific aim was to determine baseline cardiovascular risk through the use of the Framingham General Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Score (FGCVRAS) calculation and heart/vascular age calculation. Subjects included 30 women (mean age 49.97). Mean FGCVRAS was 5.58% (SD 5.68), and mean heart/vascular age was 49.62 years …

Validation Of Shear‐Wave Velocity Models Of The Pacific Northwest, Haiying Gao, Yang Shen Jan 2012

Validation Of Shear‐Wave Velocity Models Of The Pacific Northwest, Haiying Gao, Yang Shen

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Four surface‐wave tomographic models in the Pacific Northwest and a combined CRUST2.0 and AK135 model are tested and validated systematically. Synthetic Green’s functions calculated with the models using a finite‐difference method are compared with empirical Green’s functions at periods of 7–50 s. To ensure high‐quality signals, empirical Green’s functions are extracted from the ambient noise cross correlation of vertical‐to‐vertical components between station pairs that have up to a decade of recorded data. The observed and synthetic Green’s functions are cross correlated at multiple frequency bands to determine phase delay times and cross‐correlation coefficients. The delay time predicted by the CRUST2.0 …

Sensing The Spirit: Wesley's Empiricism And His Use Of The Language Of Spiritual Sensation, James E. Pedlar

The Asbury Journal

This paper examines the relationship betweenJohn Wesley's empiricism and his use of the language of "spiritual sensation." Through a close reading of Wesley's own espousal of empiricism, as well as his use of the language of the spiritual senses, it will be argued that Wesley, while committed to empiricism as a natural epistemology, views the experience of the Spirit as something which is known intuitively. H is references to the spiritual senses are therefore best understood as an analogy for this intuitively known experience of the Spirit. While Wesley's discussions of spiritual sensation are not simply an extension of his …

Learning And Innovation In The Context Of Process-Focused Management Practices: The Case Of An Environmental Management System, Deepa Aravind Jan 2012

Learning And Innovation In The Context Of Process-Focused Management Practices: The Case Of An Environmental Management System, Deepa Aravind

Publications and Research

Adoption of process-focused management practices has been associated with inertia and rigidity in adopting firms. By drawing on the literature on routines and using survey data from 192 ISO 14001 certified facilities in the United States, I find that change catalysis or a deep form of learning which presents the opportunity for innovation can happen in this context. I also examine the internal and external determinants of change catalysis. By doing so I contribute to a better understanding of how process-focused management practices can be a source of innovation within firms.

Plasticity Of Corticospinal Neural Control After Locomotor Training In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Maria Knikou Jan 2012

Plasticity Of Corticospinal Neural Control After Locomotor Training In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Maria Knikou

Publications and Research

Spinal lesions substantially impair ambulation, occur generally in young and otherwise healthy individuals, and result in devastating effects on quality of life. Restoration of locomotion after damage to the spinal cord is challenging because axons of the damaged neurons do not regenerate spontaneously. Body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT) is a therapeutic approach in which a person with a spinal cord injury (SCI) steps on a motorized treadmill while some body weight is removed through an upper body harness. BWSTT improves temporal gait parameters, muscle activation patterns, and clinical outcome measures in persons with SCI. These changes are likely the result of …

‘Going Through The Mist’: Early Career Transitions Of Chinese Millennial Returnees, Emily T. Porschitz, Chun (Grace) Guo, José Alves

WCBT Faculty Publications

Over the past decade management practitioners have sought to understand the career expectations of the Millennial generation - those born between 1979 and 1994 (Myers and Sadaghiani, 2010) - who are rapidly becoming a dominant force in the global economy. As workers from the Baby Boomer generation move towards retirement, organization leaders are becoming more interested in understanding how to attract and retain millennial employees most effectively (Walmsley, 2007). A large body of research is devoted to uncovering the career expectations of millennial workers, so that practitioners can better understand them. Findings suggest Millennial have high expectations regarding career success …

A Comparative Examination Of Women’S Remittance Practices In Two Somali Communities: Johannesburg, South Africa, And Columbus, Ohio, Marnie Shaffer

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Women throughout the Somali diaspora are renowned for their commitment to provide financial support to their families abroad (see, for example, Horst 2007). Although it has only been in recent years that women have been migrating to South Africa, their sense of responsibility to remit is equally as strong as those women’s who left Somalia in the early 2000s and before. The author conducted research in Mayfair, a suburb near downtown Johannesburg in Gauteng Province, where the Somali community is most densely populated, and in Columbus, Ohio, where several pockets of Somalis are dispersed around the city. Study results indicate …

Rice

Faculty Articles

Judges as well as members of plaintiffs’ and defense bars agree: a class action is a superior, efficient, and inexpensive procedural tool to litigate disputes that present similar questions of fact and law. To be sure, corporations and insurers have a long history of filing successful class actions against each other in state courts. Yet those corporate entities convinced Congress to embrace an uncommon view: continuing to allow allegedly “hostile” and “biased” state judges and juries to hear and decide everyday consumers’ “purely substantive state law class actions” is unfair and inefficient. Responding to the plea, Congress enacted the Class …

Judge Bernard S. Meyer: First Merit Appointee To The New York Court Of Appeals, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

This is the story of Judge Bernard S. Meyer’s exhilarating, exhausting, and highly productive first year on the New York Court of Appeals. Based on a reputation for integrity and a record of professional accomplishment, Judge Meyer was chosen to the New York Court of Appeals in 1979, and the following seven-and-a-half years he spent there were highly productive. While on the Court of Appeals, Judge Meyer was a progressive reformer, and it was clear he intended to use his office to make the world a better place and, whenever possible, remedy injustice. He looked for ways in which the …
