Protology And Eschatology In The Writings Of John C. Polkinghorne: A Study Of Contrastive Roles Of Scripture, H. Nicholas De Lima Jan 2012

Protology And Eschatology In The Writings Of John C. Polkinghorne: A Study Of Contrastive Roles Of Scripture, H. Nicholas De Lima

Master's Theses

Problem The focus of this thesis is to address the problem of the contrastive roles of Scripture in protology and eschatology in the writings of John C. Polkinghorne. On the one hand, Polkinghorne rejects a univocal understanding of Gen 1-2, by invoking symbolic/analogical language for Gen 1-2, so that he can accept scientific protology. On the other hand, Polkinghorne introduces an apparent, relative univocity of biblical language in order to obtain his eschatology, contrary to the claims of pure scientific eschatology. This seems to suggest a dimension of internal methodological and theological incoherence in his system. Methodology This thesis provides …

Socially Constructing God: Gender, Culture, And A Stratified Trinity, Landon P. Schnabel Jan 2012

Socially Constructing God: Gender, Culture, And A Stratified Trinity, Landon P. Schnabel

Master's Theses

The Problem. Both hierarchicalist and equivalentist evangelicals use Trinitarian relations to argue for their opposing views on gender roles. How can this stalemate be broken if the Bible, the typical evangelical foundation for resolving doctrinal disputes, is used by both sides to argue their contrasting positions? -- Methods and Procedures. I explored the cultural determination of worldview, bringing the fields of sociology, psychology, history, and philosophy to bear on this theological debate and considered whether it may be differing presuppositions and subsequent opposing interpretations that cause the conflicting positions, rather than what the biblical text means. By looking through the …

Symmetry And The Order Of Events In Time. The Asymmetrical Order Of Events In Time In A Reversible Energy Converter, Ben-Zion Ginzburg, Randy Wayne Jan 2012

Symmetry And The Order Of Events In Time. The Asymmetrical Order Of Events In Time In A Reversible Energy Converter, Ben-Zion Ginzburg, Randy Wayne

Turkish Journal of Physics

The positive increase of entropy that occurs in irreversible processes has always served as a criterion for distinguishing the past from the future. The unerring ability of the Second Law of Thermodynamics to predict the order of events in time based on a change of entropy in macroscopic systems has led to the concept of the thermodynamical arrow of time. In this paper we analyze a cyclical reversible energy converter, in which thermal energy is converted into useful work without any net change of entropy. While it is usually assumed that time is an outsider in the equations of reversible …

Investigating The Ped Protein And Its Effect On Translational Control In Drosophila Melanogaster Spermatogenesis, David C. Keesling Jan 2012

Investigating The Ped Protein And Its Effect On Translational Control In Drosophila Melanogaster Spermatogenesis, David C. Keesling

Theses and Dissertations--Biology

Inactive mutants of the ped gene cause two phenotypes in Drosophila melanogaster: male sterility and the early translation of DHODH within spermatogenesis. Investigation of the PED amino acid sequence revealed an OTU domain and an ubiquitin interacting motif, suggesting that it is a member of the otubain sub-family of de-ubiqutinating enzymes. To test this, the putative active cysteine residue was mutated. Results show that this single cysteine residue is required for ped to confer male fertility. Purified wild type PED was also used to carry out in vitro deubiquitinating assays. These assays failed to show any ability for PED …

Adult Bmi Change And Risk Of Colon Cancer In Postmenopausal Women, Lyla Blake-Gumbs, Zhengyi Chen, Cheryl L. Thompson, Nathan A. Berger, Thomas C. Tucker, Li Li

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Purpose. We recently reported an association of adult BMI change with colon cancer risk. Here, we sought to further explore this association with respect to postmenopausal HRT use in a larger study population. Methods. We included 1,457 postmenopausal women participating in an ongoing population-based case-control study of colon cancer. Results. We confirmed a previously reported association of adulthood weight gain and increased risk of colon cancer: compared to those with <5 kg/m2 change of BMI, women who reported moderate (5–10 kg/m2) and large (>10 kg/m2) BMI changes since their 20s had OR estimates …

Federal Constitutions, Global Governance, And The Role Of Forests In Regulating Climate Change, Blake Hudson Jan 2012

Federal Constitutions, Global Governance, And The Role Of Forests In Regulating Climate Change, Blake Hudson

Journal Articles

Federal systems of government present more difficulties for international treaty formation than perhaps any other form of governance. Federal constitutions that grant subnational governments virtually exclusive regulatory authority over certain subject matter may constrain national governments during international negotiations - a national government that cannot constitutionally bind subnational governments to an international agreement cannot freely arrange its international obligations. While federal nations that grant subnational governments exclusive regulatory control obviously place value on stringent decentralization and the benefits it provides in those regulatory areas, the difficulty lies in striking a balance between global governance and constitutional decentralization in federal systems. …

Fail-Safe Federalism And Climate Change: The Case Of U.S. And Canadian Forest Policy, Blake Hudson Jan 2012

Fail-Safe Federalism And Climate Change: The Case Of U.S. And Canadian Forest Policy, Blake Hudson

Journal Articles

Recent research demonstrates the difficulties that federal systems of government may present for international treaty formation, a prime example being legally binding treaties aimed at harnessing global forests to regulate climate change. Some federal constitutions, such as the U.S. and Canadian constitutions, grant subnational governments virtually exclusive direct forest management regulatory authority for non-federally owned forests. With subnational governments controlling sixty-five percent of forests in the United States and eighty-four percent in Canada, the U.S. and Canadian federal governments may be constrained during international negotiations and unable to legally bind subnational governments to any agreement prescribing methods of utilizing these …

Whose Britain Is This Anyway: Questioning Race, Class, Immigration And Nationality In Great Britain Between 1948 And 2011, Christina Jayne Cruce Jan 2012

Whose Britain Is This Anyway: Questioning Race, Class, Immigration And Nationality In Great Britain Between 1948 And 2011, Christina Jayne Cruce

Senior Independent Study Theses

This work discusses how questions of race, class, immigration and nationality have changed since 1948. To answer it I looked at the 1981 Brixton race riot and the 2011 UK urban youth riots. I argue that, despite improvements in black and white race relations, British society has continued to discriminate against black-Brits on multiple levels. I have also found that since the 1980s there has been a governmental and, more generally, a societal neglect of the working-class population as a whole. In regards to the findings of other scholars and historians, my work looks at both urban, poor blacks and …

Better Learning Though Augmented Reality: Ar In The Classroom, Alex Manning, Russell Powers, Xan Pedisich Jan 2012

Better Learning Though Augmented Reality: Ar In The Classroom, Alex Manning, Russell Powers, Xan Pedisich

Anthós

This paper reports on the development of an augmented reality (AR) game that immerses students virtually and in their physical environment to view PSU in different ways. Players learn historical information, interact with contributions from previous players, and use language to describe what they see, discovering new and rediscovering old hotspots. By producing knowledge through activity and learning through action, students are engaged in and shape their own education in real scenarios instead of through book work alone. Player experience and dynamics are recorded and assessed with a view toward creating more powerful learning environments.

The Light-Sensitive Conductance Of Melanopsin-Expressing Joseph And Hesse Cells In Amphioxus, Camila Pulido, Gerardo Malagón, Camilo Ferrer, Jun Kui Chen, Juan Manuel Angueyra, Enrico Nasi, María Del Pilar Gomez

Publications and Research

Two types of microvillar photoreceptors in the neural tube of amphioxus, an early chordate, sense light via melanopsin, the same photopigment as in “circadian” light detectors of higher vertebrates. Because in amphioxus melanopsin activates a Gq/phospholipase C cascade, like phototransduction in arthropods and mollusks, possible commonalities in the photoconductance were investigated. Unlike other microvillar photoreceptors, reversal of the photocurrent can only be attained upon replacement of extracellular Na+. In addition to Na+, Ca2+ is also permeant, as indicated by the fact that (a) in normal ionic conditions the photocurrent remains inward at Vm > ENa; (b) in Na-free solution a small …

Pengangguran, Lama Mencari Kerja, Dan Reservation Wage Tenaga Kerja Terdidik, N. Haidy. A. Pasay, Ratna Indrayanti

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Number of educated unemployment is increasing every year. Of the 8.59 million unemployed labor force in 2010, 4.8 million of whom are middle and high educated unemployed. Meanwhile, unemployment duration was 11 months. Two step Heckman method is employed to estimate reservation wage. The OLS estimates duration of search for educated unemployment as well as by social, demographic, and regional characteristics. Search duration for middle and high educated workforce is longer than low educated workforce. The reservation wage of highly educated labor force by social, demographic, and regional characteristics is higher than other labor force.

Responding To Stern V. Marshall, Stephanie J. Bentley Jan 2012

Responding To Stern V. Marshall, Stephanie J. Bentley

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Stern v. Marshall is the most recent decision in a series of cases decided by the Supreme Court that involves the doctrine of public rights. The Court found that although 28 U.S.C. § 157(b)(2)(C) permits a bankruptcy court to enter final judgments on all counterclaims, Article III of the Constitution does not. The Court reiterated that Article III, Section 1 of the Constitution mandates the judicial power of the United States "be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish." The judges for these courts must have …

The Bederman Lecture On Law And Jurisprudence: Public Law & Custom, David J. Bederman Jan 2012

The Bederman Lecture On Law And Jurisprudence: Public Law & Custom, David J. Bederman

Emory Law Journal

Law professors love puzzles. Give us a legal doctrine that does not make sense, or appears counterintuitive, or does not appear to comport with some methodological assumption, and we can spend months (if not years) plumbing its depths and producing reams of paper in exploring its contours. The good news today is that my exegesis shall be limited to the length of this lecture. Let me first set out the character of the puzzle and see if I cannot solve it in the time allotted.

The Soybean Aphid, Aphis Glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae): Population Dynamics On Edamame Soybeans In Nebraska, Usa, Bamphitlhi Tiroesele, Thomas E. Hunt, Robert J. Wright, Erin E. Blankenship, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Edamame are soybeans harvested at a physiologically immature (R6) stage as a specialty food item for fresh and processed (frozen) markets. The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is a newly introduced insect pest of soybeans in North America. This field study was to provide baseline information on the impact of A. glycines on the edamame soybean. This study determined the population growth rate of A. glycines on two edamame soybean cultivars, ‘Butterbeans’ and ‘Envy,’ at two planting dates during 2004 and 2005 in Nebraska. Aphid population growth was significantly higher on 'Butterbeans' than on 'Envy' for the first planting date …

Mortality Impact Of Mon863 Transgenic Maize Roots On Western Corn Rootworm Larvae In The Field, T. L. Clark, D. L. Frank, B. W. French, Lance J. Meinke, D. Moellenbeck, T. T. Vaughn, B. E. Hibbard Jan 2012

Mortality Impact Of Mon863 Transgenic Maize Roots On Western Corn Rootworm Larvae In The Field, T. L. Clark, D. L. Frank, B. W. French, Lance J. Meinke, D. Moellenbeck, T. T. Vaughn, B. E. Hibbard

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Mortality of western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) due to feeding on MON863 transgenic maize (Zea mays L.) expressing the Cry3Bb1 protein was evaluated at three Missouri sites in both 2003 and 2004 and at one site each in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa in 2004. To do this, survivorship relative to survivorship on isoline maize (i.e., the same genetic background, but without Cry3Bb1) was evaluated. Comparisons were made using low (1650–2500 eggs/m) and high (3300–3500 eggs/m) western corn rootworm egg densities. Significantly fewer beetles were recovered from MON863 than from isoline maize. Emergence from MON863 as …

The Strange Career Of The Biblia Rabbinica Among Christian Hebraists, 1517–1620, Stephen G. Burnett Jan 2012

The Strange Career Of The Biblia Rabbinica Among Christian Hebraists, 1517–1620, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The Rabbinic Bible became a standard reference tool, above all for Protestant Hebraists during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It contained not only the Hebrew Bible text, but also Aramaic-language Targums (periphrastic translations of the biblical text, mostly dating from before 500) and Jewish biblical commentaries written between ca. 1100 and 1500. To use these works required that a Christian Hebraist know not only the language of the Bible, but also Targumic Aramaic and medieval Hebrew, which was rather different from biblical or mishnaic Hebrew. For Christian scholars who mastered these languages and were able to read these different texts, …

Competing Codes And Involuntary Confessions Of The Flesh In La Princesse De Clèves, Nora Martin Peterson Jan 2012

Competing Codes And Involuntary Confessions Of The Flesh In La Princesse De Clèves, Nora Martin Peterson

French Language and Literature Papers

In the Princesse de Clèves, confession, embedded this time in the courtly context, plays an undeniable, and yet complex, role in the unfolding of the main character's development. What I call involuntary confessions of the flesh—signs of the interior that slip out, unbidden, onto the exterior of the body—might appear to contradict the restraints of a century marked by René Descartes's privileging of the rational and by an increasingly strict imperative to rein in unruly signs of the flesh. In a court obsessed with appearance and dissimulation, how could involuntary confessions of the flesh possibly contribute to …

The Meaning Students Make As Participants In Short-Term Immersion Programs, Susan R. Jones, Heather T. Rowan-Kenyon, S. Mei-Yen Ireland, Elizabeth K. Niehaus, Kristan Cilente Skendall

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to present the results of a multi-site case study designed to investigate students’ experiences as participants in four week-long immersion programs (New York City, Peru, the Czech Republic, Chicago). Results highlight the significance of the context of the trips and specific characteristics of the trip (e.g., getting out of the bubble, boundary crossing, and personalizing), which served as the springboard for learning and meaning making. In particular, meaning making focused on developing new understandings of social issues, privilege, and stereotypes, reframing experiences upon participants’ return, and shifting sense of purpose and career planning.

Whose Water Is It Anyway? Comparing The Water Rights Frameworks Of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Georgia, Alabama, And Florida, M. D. Smolen, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Bekki Harjo

In most states surface waters, (streams, lakes, and coastal waters) are owned by the public. On the other hand, ground water may be privately or publicly owned. Because all waters are linked through the hydrologic cycle, and the hydrologic cycle is not confined within any geographic or political boundary, the question of ownership is generally replaced by one of who has the right to manage, divert, use, or sell the water.

The Effect Of Advertising-Focused, Short-Term Study Abroad Programs On Students’ Worldviews, Frauke Hachtmann Jan 2012

The Effect Of Advertising-Focused, Short-Term Study Abroad Programs On Students’ Worldviews, Frauke Hachtmann

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Global employers in the advertising industry are increasingly interested in hiring students with intercultural communication skills and cultural experience. While the benefits of long-term study abroad programs are well documented, this study focuses on advertising-specific, short-term study abroad programs. The purpose was to explore the effectiveness of such programs on students’ worldviews using a mixed methods design. The results show that students displayed lower levels of ethnocentrism after participating in short-term, advertising-focused study abroad programs. In addition, five qualitative themes emerged: an awareness of and appreciation for the out-group, an increased awareness of the in-group, the importance of communication, a …

Integrity And Retention Of Ear-Tag Radiotransmitters In Domestic Cattle And Feral Horses, Bryan M. Kluever, Laura Lagos, Stewart W. Breck, Larry D. Howery, Manuel L. Sanmartín, David L. Bergman, Felipe Bárcena

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Radiotelemetry is an important tool for wildlife management and research, but in some cases attachment of neck collars can be problematic. An alternative in large mammals is to attach transmitters to the ear, though little is published about ear-tag radiotransmitter integrity (i.e., how long a transmitter emits a useful signal) and retention (i.e., how long a transmitter remains attached to an animal). Here we report eartag transmitter integrity and retention from 2 studies monitoring free-ranging calves (Bos taurus) in eastern Arizona, USA, and feral horse (Equus ferus) foals in northwestern Spain. Transmitter integrity and retention was …

The Impact Of University Patenting On Mobility Of Scientists, Xi Ye Jan 2012

The Impact Of University Patenting On Mobility Of Scientists, Xi Ye

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

After the passage of Bayh-Dole Act, universities have been actively involved in patenting. At the same time, the booming of university patenting has brought up huge controversies and debates in academia. A large body of literature is devoted, from a broad macro-level view, to investigate the impact of intellectual property rights (IPR) on the research activities of universities. However, very few empirical studies have been conducted to study the impact of university patenting on the mobility of individuals who have been granted these patents. This study, aiming to provide a different insight to the extant literature, employs data from U.S. …
