Estimating The Efficiency Of Michigan's Rural And Urban Public School Districts, Rita Ann Maranowski
Estimating The Efficiency Of Michigan's Rural And Urban Public School Districts, Rita Ann Maranowski
Wayne State University Dissertations
This study examined student achievement in Michigan public school districts to determine if rural school districts are demonstrating greater financial efficiency by producing higher levels of student achievement than school districts in other geographic locations with similar socioeconomics. Three models were developed using multiple regression analysis of student achievement for high school graduation rates and student proficiency rates for eleventh grade students in mathematics and English language arts as reported from the Michigan Merit Examination results. These models compared student achievement by geographic location which included a selection of 10 independent variables and a sample size of 496 Michigan public …
Inequality In Health Care Utilization And Equity: A Cross-Country Comparision Of Low And Middle Income Countries, Satis Chandra Devkota
Inequality In Health Care Utilization And Equity: A Cross-Country Comparision Of Low And Middle Income Countries, Satis Chandra Devkota
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation identifies the sustainable policies that can reduce disparity in health care utilization, education and income from the low and middle income countries represented by Albania, Nepal, Tajikistan and Tanzania. Concentration indices are used to calculate the income related inequality in health care utilization and education, and Gini index is used to calculate the inequality in income. Likewise, horizontal inequity index is used to test whether the principle of equal treatment for equal need and equal schooling for equal need is maintained in all countries under study. Finally, a mechanism is proposed for the first time in the literature …
Flickering Cities: Multimedia City Fabrics And The Changing Nature Of Citizenship, Andrew Geddes Engel
Flickering Cities: Multimedia City Fabrics And The Changing Nature Of Citizenship, Andrew Geddes Engel
Wayne State University Dissertations
How do the multiple media in cities today cause us to rethink the constructions and locations of our artifacts and their effects on us? In this dissertation, I argue that city artifacts, and by extension cities themselves, exist as multiple iterations scattered across the whole range of the media spectrum. The new persuasive potential of these iterations in their different media necessitate a turn to “post-urban” city fabrics, and these new fabrics are expansion and re-expression of the urban in unexpected media. Therefore, we must work to acknowledge and take advantage of the ways cities “flicker” as their artifacts are …
The Effect Of Musical Training On Verbal And Tonal Working Memory, Ching-I Lu
The Effect Of Musical Training On Verbal And Tonal Working Memory, Ching-I Lu
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation explored the translation from print to sound of the tonal language Mandarin versus English versus musical notation in healthy volunteers. The performance of musicians and non-musicians was compared across a variety of reading tasks in an attempt to examine whether musical training can facilitate Mandarin tone or phonological processing. The effects of increasing working memory load on reading performance across tasks were also examined. Results showed that increasing demands on working memory in visual recognition tasks significantly decreased performance accuracy for both musicians and non-musicians across tasks. Significant differences in accuracy rates were observed between musicians and non-musicians. …
Wired & Dangerous: Hacks, Hair Extensions And Other Twists On Traditional Technical Communication, Hilary Anne Sarat-St Peter
Wired & Dangerous: Hacks, Hair Extensions And Other Twists On Traditional Technical Communication, Hilary Anne Sarat-St Peter
Wayne State University Dissertations
Ever since its inception as a "humanistic" research discipline (Miller, 1979; Dombrowski, 1994), technical communication has striven to balance workplace exigencies with attention to the broader rhetorical, social and ethical issues within which technical communication is situated. Recently, this humanistic agenda has expanded from a simple awareness of contextual factors surrounding work (see, for example, Collier and Toomey, 1997) to calls for technical communication research in non-workplace and other non-traditional sites. Frequently these calls for "extra-institutional" research (Kimball, 2007) are driven by the assumption that users' indigenous technical communication is inherently more user-centered - and therefore more democratic - than …
Narratives Of Possibility: Adolescent Girls Constructing And Negotiating Front And Back Stage Identities Through Blogs, Kattie Marie Hogan
Narratives Of Possibility: Adolescent Girls Constructing And Negotiating Front And Back Stage Identities Through Blogs, Kattie Marie Hogan
Wayne State University Dissertations
For young woman, the issue of self-expression is important to consider because there are many contexts where their voices and experiences are discounted, silenced, and suppressed. Venues for self-expression can provide a way for those voices and experiences that have been ignored in classrooms and other social outlets to be recognized. This research study explored the ways four girls between the ages of 16-19 used blogging to construct meaning of their experiences and negotiate their identities through a wide range of literary practices including nonfiction and fiction writing, photographs, self-created drawings, and other materials. Writing in these blogs girls moved …
A Case Of Conflict Of Cultures: End-Of-Life Decision Making Among Asian Americans, Pat K. Chew
A Case Of Conflict Of Cultures: End-Of-Life Decision Making Among Asian Americans, Pat K. Chew
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This essay presents a case example of a conflict between two cultures. One culture is the U.S. mainstream culture, as illustrated in a federal statute, the Patient Self-Determination Act. This statute provides legal guidelines for health care providers dealing with individuals' end-of-life decision making. Lawyers and health care providers refer to these guidelines in their counseling and treatments, apparently assuming that these guidelines are in the best interest of those they serve. The other culture is Asian American culture and its approach to end-of-life decision making. As this essay will discuss, Asian Americans have strong and long-established beliefs, values, and …
Conflicts As Inner Trials: Transitions For Clients, Ideas For Lawyers, Jonathan R. Cohen
Conflicts As Inner Trials: Transitions For Clients, Ideas For Lawyers, Jonathan R. Cohen
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
As times of transition, conflicts often produce significant inner trials for parties. This paper categorizes some of the more common inner trials parties in conflict face (e.g., coping with loss, strong emotions, uncertainty, etc.) and suggests that, as liminal times in people's lives, some conflicts may also hold within them important opportunities for learning, growth and self-definition. This paper also offers some ideas for how lawyers might best assist clients during such transitions.

The Status Of Canada Goose Branta Canadensis Subspecies In Greenland, Anthony D. Fox, David Sinnett, John A. Baroch, David A. Stroud, Kaj Kampp, Carsten Egevang, David Boertmann
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Three subspecies of the Canada Goose (Branta canadensis interior, B.c. parvipes and B.c. hutchinsii) have been reported from Greenland, where the species has increased dramatically as a breeding and summering bird in the last 30 years. We report results of catch data, new observations, re-examination of archive photographs and museum specimens that show the subspecies interior is the most common and widespread subspecies, which has been present in West Greenland since at least 1864 (predating the previous earliest record from 1976). Re-measurement of museum skins confirmed that all specimens of parvipes relate to individuals of the interior type, …
Improving Evapotranspiration Simulations In The Ceres-Maize Model Under Limited Irrigation, K.C. Dejonge, J.C. Ascough Ii, A.A. Andales, N.C. Hansen, L.A. Garcia, M. Arabi
Improving Evapotranspiration Simulations In The Ceres-Maize Model Under Limited Irrigation, K.C. Dejonge, J.C. Ascough Ii, A.A. Andales, N.C. Hansen, L.A. Garcia, M. Arabi
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Limitations on water resources for agriculture in places such as Colorado, USA, have caused farmers to consider limited irrigation as an alternative to full irrigation practices, where the crop is intentionally stressed during specific growth stages in an effort to maximize yield per unit water consumed, or evapotranspiration (ET). While crop growth models such as CERES-Maize provide the ability to evaluate numerous management scenarios without the costs associated with multiyear field experiments, recent studies have shown that CERES-Maize performs well under full irrigation but overestimates ET of corn under limited irrigation management. The primary objective of this study was to …
Chapter 5 Switchgrass Harvest And Storage, Robert B. Mitchell, Marty R. Schmer
Chapter 5 Switchgrass Harvest And Storage, Robert B. Mitchell, Marty R. Schmer
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The feedstock characteristics of the conversion platform will influence the optimal harvest and post harvest management practices for switchgrass. However, many of the harvest management practices are tied to plant phenology and will be similar across platforms. Proper harvest and storage of switchgrass will help provide a consistent and high-quality feedstock to the biorefinery. Bioenergyspecific switchgrass strains are high-yielding and in most cases can be harvested and baled with commercially available haying equipment. Many options are available for packaging switchgrass for storage and transportation, but large round bales or large rectangular bales are the most readily available and are in …

Impaired Object Tracking In Children With Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, Margarita H. Cabaral, Elliott A. Beaton, Joel Stoddard, Tony J. Simon
Psychology Faculty Publications
Background:
Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS) occurs in approximately 1:4,000 live births with a complex and variable presentation that includes medical, socioemotional and psychological symptoms with intellectual impairment. Cognitive impairments in spatiotemporal and visuospatial attention have also been reported. However, maintenance of selective attention to dynamic and interacting objects has not been systematically investigated in children with 22q11.2DS.
Methods:
We used a multiple object tracking task to assay capacity and resolution performance of children with 22q11.2DS aged 7 to 14 years versus age-matched typically developing (TD) peers.
Results:
Children with 22q11.2DS but not TD children demonstrated impaired performance when task …
