Effects Of Winter Weather Risk On The Profitability Of Beef Feedlots In North Dakota, Billiejo Mae Armbrust Shae Jan 2012

Effects Of Winter Weather Risk On The Profitability Of Beef Feedlots In North Dakota, Billiejo Mae Armbrust Shae

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This study examines the effects of management decisions, animal performance, weather risk, and economic variables on the profitability of the beef feedlot in North Dakota using data from the Dakota Feeder Calf Show and feed trials at North Dakota State University's Carrington Research and Extension Center. The effects of these variables were studied using an ordinary least squares analysis. Results demonstrated that severe cold stress reduced the profits of the feedlot in North Dakota. Results suggest that steers placed during the fall in North Dakota with placement weights > 600 pounds are more profitable to feed than lighter weight steers.

Myths And Measures: The Cultural Performance Of Portland’S Strip Club Identity, Wayne Coffey Jan 2012

Myths And Measures: The Cultural Performance Of Portland’S Strip Club Identity, Wayne Coffey

Geography Masters Research Papers

Identities of place develop through a multitude of perceptions. Place myths guide much of this perception. Portland, Oregon’s identity has evolved in particular around a much quoted but unchallenged statistic regarding the volume of nude dancing venues. This paper focuses on the literature specific to both nude dance venues and place identity; Portland’s legal history that contributed to this phenomenon; and some of the cultural and spatial variables pertinent to this issue. Two initiatives, aimed at restructuring the state constitution specifically to deal with nude dance venues and other adult entertainment, are analyzed.

The Implications Of Migration Theory For Distributive Justice, Alexander Sager Jan 2012

The Implications Of Migration Theory For Distributive Justice, Alexander Sager

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explores the implications of empirical theories of migration for normative accounts of migration and distributive justice. It examines neo-classical economics, world-systems theory, dual labor market theory, and feminist approaches to migration and contends that neo-classical economic theory in isolation provides an inadequate understanding of migration. Other theories provide a fuller account of how national and global economic, political, and social institutions cause and shape migration flows by actively affecting people's opportunity sets in source countries and by admitting people according to social categories such as class and gender. These empirical theories reveal the causal impact of institutions regulating …

Dynamic Ccd Pixel Depletion Edge Model And The Effects On Dark Current Production, Justin Charles Dunlap, Morley M. Blouke, Erik Bodegom, Ralf Widenhorn Jan 2012

Dynamic Ccd Pixel Depletion Edge Model And The Effects On Dark Current Production, Justin Charles Dunlap, Morley M. Blouke, Erik Bodegom, Ralf Widenhorn

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The depletion edge in Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD) pixels is dependent upon the amount of signal charge located within the depletion region. A model is presented that describes the movement of the depletion edge with increasing signal charge. This dynamic depletion edge is shown to have an effect on the amount of dark current produced by some pixels. Modeling the dark current behavior of pixels both with and without impurities over an entire imager demonstrates that this moving depletion edge has a significant effect on a subset of the pixels. Dark current collected by these pixels is shown to behave nonlinearly …

Encounters With Witchcraft, Norman Miller Jan 2012

Encounters With Witchcraft, Norman Miller

Dartmouth Scholarship

My first experience with witchcraft in Africa occurred in March 1960 in Mombasa, Kenya, just as I stepped off the gangway of the MS Inchanga following a voyage from India. Next to the ship in a dockside kiosk I saw a newspaper with the headline, “European Geologist Attacked in Gogoland: Witchcraft Suspected.” It was the story of a 22-year-old British geologist, William Hanning, who had been prospecting for minerals in a remote part of nearby Tanzania when by mistake he dug into a burial ground. He was believed to be a witch, disguised as a European, out to steal body …

Never Back Down, Ernest Hebert

Dartmouth Scholarship

I built Never Back Down along two tracks. First, it's my imagined life if I had never gone to college. The second track is based on Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I wanted to write a story that resonated with my roots in French Canada.

We present the first results from a detailed analysis of photometric and spectrophotometric data on the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 335, collected over a 120 day span in the fall of 2010. From these data we measure the lag in the He ii λ 4686 broad emission line relative to the optical continuum to be 2.7 °æ 0.6 days and the lag in the Hβλ 4861 broad emission line to be 13.9 °æ 0.9 days. Combined with the line width, the He ii lag yields a black hole mass MBH = (2. 6 °æ 0. 8) °ø 107M …

Artification And The Aesthetic Regime Of Art, Aleš Erjavec Jan 2012

Artification And The Aesthetic Regime Of Art, Aleš Erjavec

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The author discusses “artification” and attempts to ascertain whether some common features can be found between artification and Jacques Rancière’s aesthetics, especially his notion of the “aesthetic regime of art.” The author argues that Rancière’s project of “art become life” can be employed as a common denominator of both theoretical frameworks, that of artification and that of the aesthetic regime of art. Nonetheless, the art to which Rancière’s notion primarily applies is different from art in the traditional sense, which seems to form the empirical basis of the notion of artification.

The Role Of Cax1 And Cax3 In Elemental Distribution And Abundance In Arabidopsis Seed, Tracy Punshon, Kendall Hirschi, Jian Yang, Antonio Lanzirotti, Barry Lai, Mary Lou Guerinot Jan 2012

The Role Of Cax1 And Cax3 In Elemental Distribution And Abundance In Arabidopsis Seed, Tracy Punshon, Kendall Hirschi, Jian Yang, Antonio Lanzirotti, Barry Lai, Mary Lou Guerinot

Dartmouth Scholarship

The ability to alter nutrient partitioning within plants cells is poorly understood. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), a family of endomembrane cation exchangers (CAXs) transports Ca2+ and other cations. However, experiments have not focused on how the distribution and partitioning of calcium (Ca) and other elements within seeds are altered by perturbed CAX activity. Here, we investigate Ca distribution and abundance in Arabidopsis seed from cax1 and cax3 loss-of-function lines and lines expressing deregulated CAX1 using synchrotron x-ray fluorescence microscopy. We conducted 7- to 10-μm resolution in vivo x-ray microtomography on dry mature seed and 0.2-μm resolution x-ray …

Systemic Propaganda As Ideology And Productive Exchange, Gerald Sussman Jan 2012

Systemic Propaganda As Ideology And Productive Exchange, Gerald Sussman

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Informed by the works of Marx and his progeny (Lukács, Gramsci, Althusser) as well as more recent marxian scholarship, the purpose of this paper is to explore the role of ideology and propaganda in the production and circulation of commodities and in the informalization of the contemporary workplace, particularly in the context of the promotional economy, politics, and culture of the United States. The heightened functions of media and communication technologies mark the pinnacle expression of late capitalism—the production, reproduction and colonization of the sphere of consciousness as a necessary condition for the maintenance of the corporate state as it …

This report is a synthesis of ideas about what this new economy-in-society-innature could look like and how we might get there. Most of the ideas presented here are not new. The coauthors of this report have published them in various forms over the last several decades, and many others have expressed similar ideas in venues too numerous to mention. What is new is the timing and the situation. The time has come when we must make a transition. We have no choice. Our present path is clearly unsustainable. As Paul Raskin has said, "Contrary to the conventional wisdom, it is …

Evaluation Of Storage Techniques To Preserve Fermentable Sugars From Sugar Beets For Ethanol Production, Juan Manuel Vargas-Ramirez Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Storage Techniques To Preserve Fermentable Sugars From Sugar Beets For Ethanol Production, Juan Manuel Vargas-Ramirez

Agribusiness and Biosystems Engineering

New sugar beet varieties may qualify as an advanced biofuel feedstock in the U.S., but new alternatives to conventional pile storage are necessary to preserve fermentable sugars and allow yearlong beet ethanol production. Fermentable sugar preservation was assessed in sugar beets stored under aerobic and anaerobic atmospheres and in raw thick juice stored at acidic (2≤ pH≤ 5) and alkaline (8≤ pH≤11) conditions. Aerobic storage of sugar beets at 4°C for 14 wk resulted in higher fermentable sugar retention (99± 4%) than at 25°C or anaerobic storage at 4° C and 25° C. Raw thick juice retained ≥ 99% of …

What Matters Is Mutual Investment And Evidence-Based Dialogue: Designing Meaningful Contexts For Teacher Learning, Amy E. Ryken, Fred L. Hamel

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

How might teachers be supported as professional learners, in activities and conversations that assist, rather than distract from, the complex work they do each day? In this article we describe a public school/university partnership model designed to support practice-oriented communication among educators– where professionals from various roles, institutional affiliations, and experience levels, communicate together about the details of their teaching. We outline the principles behind our approach and describe the specific practices we use to promote communication that engages teachers’ pedagogical thinking. We share how teachers’ own practice can become a centerpiece of professional development, and how authentic questions and …

Collaborating To Teach Research Methods In Education, Todd Milford, Catherine Etmanski Jan 2012

Collaborating To Teach Research Methods In Education, Todd Milford, Catherine Etmanski

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this paper is to describe a pedagogical collaboration between two research methods instructors in a Faculty of Education in Canada. Both instructors represent different paradigms in the classic quantitative vs. qualitative dichotomy in that they were trained in vastly different ways and have tended to approach their research along these same lines. However, despite these differences the paper explores how they each viewed this as a potential limitation in their methods teaching and how through crossing over to each other’s classrooms were able to both expand their own understanding as well as offer a more balanced and …

Genetic Markers, Cattle Disposition, And Stress Relative To Variations In Beef Tenderness, James David Magolski Jan 2012

Genetic Markers, Cattle Disposition, And Stress Relative To Variations In Beef Tenderness, James David Magolski

Animal Sciences

The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of genetic markers, disposition, and animal stress on variations in beef tenderness. Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) values on 570 mixed breed heifers and steers were used to determine estimates of genetic selection. Cattle used for this analysis were marketed from 2008 to 2011, and included five different feedlot based research projects at the Carrington Research Extension Center (Carrington, ND). Tissue samples were collected for IGENITY® (Merial Limited, Duluth, GA) analysis. Results included both selection indices and molecular breeding values for hot carcass weight, ribeye area, yield grade, fat thickness, percent …

Subreption And Institutional Inquiry: Theoretical Philosophy And Evolutionary Thinking, John B. Hall, Alexander Dunlap Jan 2012

Subreption And Institutional Inquiry: Theoretical Philosophy And Evolutionary Thinking, John B. Hall, Alexander Dunlap

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

With this inquiry we respond to William Dugger‘s assertion that ―[s]ubreption is one of the least studied social phenomena of the twentieth century.‖ Our research seeks to fill a gap in the literature by clarifying subreption, and its origins in Philosophy to its importance in social science, and, especially, Institutional Inquiry. We conjecture that Thorstein Veblen borrows form Immanuel Kant‘s understanding of Erschleichung. In this respect, Veblen‘s understanding and use of subreption serves as conduit between its use in Roman law, through Kant‘s understanding, and on to what Veblen later introduces as an approach creatively relied upon by three other, …

Juvenile Justice In Louisiana: An Exploratory Study Of Trends Surrounding Juvenile Incarceration, Sabrina Michelle Whitney Jan 2012

Juvenile Justice In Louisiana: An Exploratory Study Of Trends Surrounding Juvenile Incarceration, Sabrina Michelle Whitney

LSU Master's Theses

In the State of Louisiana, one of the major problems surrounding youth is juvenile delinquency. Several studies have been conducted regarding juvenile delinquency, however, actual research pertaining to recidivism among youth offenders who were later incarcerated as an adult vs. those who were not incarcerated as an adult are limited. For this study, chi-square analyses were conducted to analyze the association between six variables and recidivism. The age of first OJJ contact was the only variable that was not statistically significant. Such knowledge is crucial for research and policy formation at the local, state, and national levels for positive progression …

The Asian And Pacific Islander Community In Multnomah County: An Unsettling Profile, Ann Curry-Stevens, Coalition Of Communities Of Color

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This report builds on the Communities of Color in Multnomah County: An Unsettling Profile publication in 2010, that provided a comprehensive and comparative study of the inequities facing communities of color, immigrants and refugees. The findings, backed up by accurate and extensive data, are indeed unsettling, highlighting the persistent and in some cases growing disparities facing our communities. We see this as a wake-up call for public officials and policy-makers, and an opportunity for increased partnership and collective action for the advancement of racial equity.

One key recommendation in this report is to improve standards that ensure the disaggregation of …

Freshest Advices On What To Do With The Historical Method In Philosophy When Using It To Study A Little Bit Of Philosophy That Has Been Lost To History, Bennett Gilbert

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The paper explores the question of the relationship between the practice of original philosophical inquiry and the study of the history of philosophy. It is written from my point of view as someone starting a research project in the history of philosophy that calls this issue into question, in order to review my starting positions. I argue: first, that any philosopher is sufficiently embedded in culture that her practice is necessarily historical; second, that original work is in fact in part a reconstruction by reinterpretation of the past and that therefore it bears some relation to historiographic techniques for the …
