Developing High-Density Diffuse Optical Tomography For Neuroimaging, Brian White Jan 2012

Developing High-Density Diffuse Optical Tomography For Neuroimaging, Brian White

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Clinicians who care for brain-injured patients and premature infants desire a bedside monitor of brain function. A decade ago, there was hope that optical imaging would be able to fill this role, as it combined fMRI's ability to construct cortical maps with EEG's portable, cap-based systems. However, early optical systems had poor imaging performance, and the momentum for the technique slowed. In our lab, we develop diffuse optical tomography: DOT), which is a more advanced method of performing optical imaging. My research has been to pioneer the in vivo use of DOT for advanced neuroimaging by: 1) quantifying the advantages …

Evaluation Of Knowledgeworkx's Cultural Mapping And Navigation Assessment : A Cultural Self-Awareness Instrument, Beth A. Yoder Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Knowledgeworkx's Cultural Mapping And Navigation Assessment : A Cultural Self-Awareness Instrument, Beth A. Yoder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory and original research project examined the Cultural Mapping & Navigation Assessment (CMN) in order to evaluate it as an intercultural training tool. This instrument was designed by KnowledgeWorkx's multicultural team to assist people in understanding cultural dimensions and developing cultural self-awareness, which are foundational to a person developing intercultural competence. The instrument was evaluated in several ways. The theoretical constructs being measured were reviewed in the literature. The questions used in the CMN were subjected to multilingual and multicultural reviewers and the instrument was statistically analyzed for reliability and validity. Based on that data, changes were made and …

Forced Options : Faculty Identity Development And Institutional Culture, Eileen Kogl Camfield Jan 2012

Forced Options : Faculty Identity Development And Institutional Culture, Eileen Kogl Camfield

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many faculty enter the professoriate with high ideals. They have identity conceptions of themselves as potential change-agents, expanding human knowledge and contributing to the greater good. Over time, for many, this idealism fades and is replaced with job dissatisfaction and bitterness. This study uses intersectionality as a theoretical frame to explore faculty identity development by examining the ways academic socialization into a competitive, hierarchical system privileges certain aspects of an individual's identity while imperiling others. In presenting data based on hour-long qualitative interviews with six mid-career university faculty members in the social sciences or humanities, the specific mechanisms that trigger …

The Impact Of Cross-Cultural Transition On Intercultural Relationships Using A Strengths-Based Approach, Kristen Naylor Calderon Jan 2012

The Impact Of Cross-Cultural Transition On Intercultural Relationships Using A Strengths-Based Approach, Kristen Naylor Calderon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the ways in which intercultural relationships are affected by cross-cultural transition through the lens of the female experience. Specifically, this research examined (1) in what ways women felt that cross-cultural transition impacted their relationship, especially with regards to cultural values and male-female role taking; and (2) what kinds of benefits women experienced in their relationships as a result of moving across cultures with their partner. A total of 15 non-Chilean women in intercultural relationships with Chilean men were interviewed; all women had lived with their partners in her home country and then moved together to Chile.

Results …

Atm Deficiency -- A Multifaceted Defect In Lymphocyte Development, Beth Helmink Jan 2012

Atm Deficiency -- A Multifaceted Defect In Lymphocyte Development, Beth Helmink

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The generation of a functional antigen receptor gene in developing lymphocytes requires that the second exon be assembled through a process known as V(D)J recombination, a process that necessarily involves the generation and repair of DNA double-strand breaks made by the Rag endonuclease. Double strand breaks incurred during G1 of the cell cycle activate ATM, a PI3-kinase-like kinase that, in response to genotoxic DNA damage, is known to phosphorylate hundreds of proteins with unique and diverse functions. Notably, deficiencies in ATM lead to ataxia-telangiectasia, a syndrome characterized by lymphopenia, genomic instability and a predisposition to tumors involving antigen receptor loci …

Molecular Dissection Of Ia Channels In Cortical Pyramidal Neurons, Aaron Norris Jan 2012

Molecular Dissection Of Ia Channels In Cortical Pyramidal Neurons, Aaron Norris

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The rapidly activating and inactivating voltage-gated K+: Kv) current, I A, is broadly expressed in neurons and is a key regulator of action potential repolarization, repetitive firing, back propagation: into dendrites) of action potentials, and responses to synaptic inputs. Interestingly, results from previous studies on a number of neuronal cell types, including hippocampal, cortical and spinal neurons, suggest that macroscopic I A is composed of multiple components and that each component is likely encoded by distinct Kv channel α-subunits. The goals of the experiments presented here were to test this hypothesis and to determine the molecular identities of the …

The Development And Application Of The "Petraeus Doctrine" During The 2007 Iraq Troop "Surge", Luke Mccorkel Jan 2012

The Development And Application Of The "Petraeus Doctrine" During The 2007 Iraq Troop "Surge", Luke Mccorkel

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In Spring 2007 President Bush ordered additional American troops to Iraq as part of a troop Surge to wage a counter-offensive based on the tactics of the newly developed Petraeus Doctrine. This thesis analyzes the events leading up to and surrounding the Surge and the role of the Petraeus Doctrine the successful defeat of the insurgency and strengthening the Iraqi Government and Security Forces enabling the Americans to being an orderly withdrawal. The Petraeus Doctrine did play a vital role in the defeat of the insurgency, but it was not the primary cause for the Surge’s success and merely took …

Outcasts Of The Universe: Shyness In Hawthorne And James, Ryan Stuart Lowe Jan 2012

Outcasts Of The Universe: Shyness In Hawthorne And James, Ryan Stuart Lowe

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In Outcasts of the Universe, I argue that shyness is a modern dilemma, problematized by the broader shifts in American society: the expanding marketplace, the idealization of the self-made man, the rise of feminism and ever-changing gender roles, and a slow consolidation of the bachelor, the artist, and the aesthete into the stigmatized figure of the homosexual. By drawing on both the lives and works of Hawthorne and James, I theorize shyness as an alternative model of social and sexual engagement in the nineteenth century.

In particular, I adapt the queer theory concept of closetedness, a concept that has no …

Movement Function Follows Spatial Form: Coordinate System Implications For Online Visual Feedback Control Of The Hand, Justin Brooks Jan 2012

Movement Function Follows Spatial Form: Coordinate System Implications For Online Visual Feedback Control Of The Hand, Justin Brooks

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Closed loop visual feedback control of the hand is essential for accurate reaching movements. Without visual signals of either the hand or target position, reaches are inaccurate and imprecise; therefore the brain uses a relative positional signal to control movements online. Previous studies suggest that movements are planned and represented in a polar coordinate system and that the dimensions, direction and extent are independently specified and processed. We were interested to find out whether there was behavioral evidence for the independent control of hand direction and extent as a movement unfolded. We asked subjects to make a reaching movement in …

The Role Of The Intestinal Microbiota In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Seth Bloom Jan 2012

The Role Of The Intestinal Microbiota In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Seth Bloom

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Inflammatory bowel disease: IBD) arises from complex interactions of genetic, environmental, and microbial factors. The intestinal microbiota is crucial for IBD induction and complex shifts in microbiota composition occur in IBD, but disease has not been consistently associated with presence or absence of a specific microbe. It is thus controversial whether fulfilling Koch's postulates for individual bacterial species is relevant to IBD and whether disease-associated alterations in microbial colonization are predictive of underlying etiology. Resolving these controversies has been challenging due to paucity of animal models with rapid disease onset, experimental reliance on gnotobiotic animals, and difficulty specifically isolating many …

Market-Oriented Subnational Debt Regimes: Empowering The Developing World To Construct Infrastructure, S. Samuel Young Jan 2012

Market-Oriented Subnational Debt Regimes: Empowering The Developing World To Construct Infrastructure, S. Samuel Young

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Globally, as national governments continue to decentralize fiscal and governmental responsibility, the sound facilitation of subnational debt markets will play a critical role in the construction of infrastructure. However, sparse scholarship exploring the optimal legal and financial frameworks for encouraging the construction of infrastructure at the subnational level has left a number of open questions. This Note primarily provides a basic overview of subnational debt trends and policies. It first reviews subnational debt regimes, comparing market-oriented regimes with regimes with varying levels of involvement by central governments. Though not always possible, the Note concludes that market-driven incentives generally produce the …

Plugging The Leak In § 1498: Coercing The United States Into Notifying Patent Owners Of Government Use, Steven Rushing Jan 2012

Plugging The Leak In § 1498: Coercing The United States Into Notifying Patent Owners Of Government Use, Steven Rushing

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

When the United States uses a patent for public, noncommercial purposes, it is required under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) to provide notification to the patent owner. However, the United States has never implemented legislation to conform with its obligation and is therefore in violation of TRIPS. This Note argues that by permitting obvious and smaller violations--such as lack of notification--to fester, the United States has left the door open for other members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to weaken the United States' overall trade policy. Members could likely accomplish this goal by first …

The Role Of International Law In Intrastate Natural Resource Allocation, Lillian A. Miranda Jan 2012

The Role Of International Law In Intrastate Natural Resource Allocation, Lillian A. Miranda

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

State natural resource development projects have become sites of intense political, social, and cultural contestation among a diversity of actors. In particular, such projects often lead to detrimental consequences for the empowerment, livelihood, and cultural and economic development of historically marginalized communities. This Article fills a gap in the existing literature by identifying and analyzing emerging international law approaches that impact the intrastate allocation of land and natural resources to historically marginalized communities, and thereby, carve away at states' top-down decision-making authority over development. It argues that while international law may have only been originally concerned with the allocation of …

Microinvestment Disputes, Perry S. Bechky Jan 2012

Microinvestment Disputes, Perry S. Bechky

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Salini v. Morocco sparked one of the liveliest controversies in the dynamic field of international investment disputes. Salini held that the word "investment" in the Convention establishing the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), although undefined, has an objective meaning that limits the ability of member states to submit disputes to ICSID arbitration. The Salini debate is central to this field because it shapes the nature, purpose, and volume of ICSID arbitration--and also determines who gets to decide those matters. In particular, Salini's decision to include "a contribution to development" as an element of its objective definition of …

Cooperation As A Service In Vanet: Implementation And Simulation Results, Hajar Mousannif, Ismail Khalil, Stephan Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The past decade has witnessed the emergence of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET), specializing from the well-known Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) to Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) wireless communications. While the original motivation for Vehicular Networks was to promote traffic safety, recently it has become increasingly obvious that Vehicular Networks open new vistas for Internet access, providing weather or road condition, parking availability, distributed gaming, and advertisement. In previous papers [27,28], we introduced Cooperation as a Service (CaaS); a new service-oriented solution which enables improved and new services for the road users and an optimized use of the road network …

Toward A Public Enforcement Model For Directors' Duty Of Oversight, Renee M. Jones, Michelle Welsh Jan 2012

Toward A Public Enforcement Model For Directors' Duty Of Oversight, Renee M. Jones, Michelle Welsh

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article proposes a public enforcement model for the fiduciary duties of corporate directors. Under the dominant model of corporate governance, the principal function of the board of directors is to oversee the conduct of senior corporate officials. When directors fail to provide proper oversight, the consequences can be severe for shareholders, creditors, employees, and society at large. Despite general agreement on the importance of director oversight, courts have yet to develop a coherent doctrine governing director liability for the breach of oversight duties. In Delaware, the dominant state for U.S. corporate law, the courts tout the importance of board …

In-House Counsel Beware!, Katrice Bridges Copeland Jan 2012

In-House Counsel Beware!, Katrice Bridges Copeland

Faculty Scholarship

This Article argues that the prosecution of Lauren Stevens for covering up the alleged crimes of GSK was misguided both as a matter of law and a matter of policy. In particular, this Article contends that the government should not prosecute attorneys for obstruction of justice or other cover-up crimes for actions taken in good faith during a government investigation into a client's conduct. Part I provides background on the Lauren Stevens case and the convergence of the four prosecution trends that led the government to indict her. Part II argues that Lauren Stevens did not obstruct the government's investigation …
