The Psychic Costs Of Violating Corruption Laws, Philip M. Nichols Jan 2012

The Psychic Costs Of Violating Corruption Laws, Philip M. Nichols

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Understanding corruption is imperative for legal scholarship, both as an intellectual subject and because corruption impedes the operation of law in much of the world and inflicts damage on well-being, governance, and quality of life. Legal scholars have contributed substantial quantitative research on corruption; this paper adopts a qualitative methodology. The similarities and differences between Singapore and Malaysia present opportunities for research. Interviews with discussants in those two countries indicate a real difference in the degree to which corruption laws have been internalized. Differences in the degree of internalization suggest differences in the psychic costs imposed by violation of corruption …

A Social Psychology Model Of The Perceived Legitimacy Of International Criminal Courts, Stuart Ford Jan 2012

A Social Psychology Model Of The Perceived Legitimacy Of International Criminal Courts, Stuart Ford

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

There is a large body of literature arguing that positive perceived legitimacy is a critical factor in the success of international criminal courts, and that courts can be engineered in such a way that they will be positively perceived by adjusting factors such as their institutional structure and outreach efforts. But in many situations the perceived legitimacy of international criminal courts has almost nothing to do with these factors. This Article takes the latest research in social psychology and applies it to survey data about perceptions of international criminal courts in order to understand how affected populations form attitudes about …

Relationships Between Exercise Self-Efficacy, Social Support, Transtheoritical Model And Self-Regulation On Perceived Wellness Among College Students, Zachary Sherman

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between social support, exercise self-efficacy, and self-regulation on perceived wellness (physical, emotional, social, intellectual, psychological, and spiritual) among college students. It is hypothesized that those with higher exercise self-efficacy and self-regulation will also have high perceived wellness. Relationships among social support with the social, physical, and emotional sub-dimensions of perceived wellness will also be researched. Specifically, the type of social support given as a reflection on individuals' perceived wellness will be researched.

A New Phase Speciation Leaching Procedure For The Determination Of Metals In Oxic And Anoxic Sediments, Brandon R. Gipson Jan 2012

A New Phase Speciation Leaching Procedure For The Determination Of Metals In Oxic And Anoxic Sediments, Brandon R. Gipson

OES Theses and Dissertations

Toxic trace elements such as cadmium, lead, chromium, and arsenic released by human activities can accumulate in marine and estuarine sediments, where these metals are often sequestered until local environmental changes (e.g., redox, salinity, and/or pH) allow these elements to be reintroduced into the food web. In order to assess the extent of toxic trace element contamination in sediment, numerous leaching schemes have been developed that separate sediment-bound trace metals into operationally defined geochemical phases. These "phase speciation" leaching schemes are typically designed with the purpose of being used on either oxic or anoxic sediments. However, natural sediments often contain …

Enhancing Spectrum Utilization In Dynamic Cognitive Radio Systems, Dusadee Treeumnuk Jan 2012

Enhancing Spectrum Utilization In Dynamic Cognitive Radio Systems, Dusadee Treeumnuk

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Cognitive radio (CR) is regarded as a viable solution to enabling flexible use of the frequency spectrum in future generations of wireless systems by allowing unlicensed secondary users (SU) to access licensed spectrum under the specific condition that no harmful interference be caused to the licensed primary users (PU) of the spectrum. In practical scenarios, the knowledge of PU activity is unknown to CRs and radio environments are mostly imperfect due to various issues such as noise uncertainty and multipath fadings. Therefore, important functionalities of CR systems are to efficiently detect availability of radio spectrum as well as to avoid …

The initial concept was to create an open access database of croplands research submitted by researchers from the Global Research Alliance Croplands Research Group, a consortium of over 30 countries. Due to the project's complexity, it was determined that a more manageable approach would be to pilot the project by including research from only the United …

Faculty Work

We demonstrate the feasibility of using qPCR on DNA extracted from vaginal Gram stain slides to estimate the presence and relative abundance of specific bacterial pathogens. We first tested Gram stained slides spiked with a mix of 108 cfu/ml of Escherichia coli and 105cfu/ml of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Primers were designed for amplification of total and species-specific bacterial DNA based on 16S ribosomal gene regions. Sample DNA was pre-amplified with nearly full length 16S rDNA ribosomal gene fragment, followed by quantitative PCR with genera and species-specific 16S rDNA primers. Pre-amplification PCR increased the bacterial amounts; relative proportions of Escherichia coli …

Using A Thinking Skills System To Guide Discussions During A Working Conference On Students With Disabilities Pursuing Stem Fields, Audrey C. Rule, Greg P. Stefanich Jan 2012

Using A Thinking Skills System To Guide Discussions During A Working Conference On Students With Disabilities Pursuing Stem Fields, Audrey C. Rule, Greg P. Stefanich

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Students with sensory or motor disabilities are often dissuaded from pursuing science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers. They are frequently underprepared to succeed in post-secondary STEM coursework because of inadequate high school preparation and limited post-secondary accommodations. A two-day working conference stimulated dialogue to improve attitudes toward, to better support, and to plan accommodations for students with physical disabilities in STEM areas. Discussion questions during the five small group dialogue sessions that followed panels of speaker presentations were based on Edward de Bono’s (2000) CoRT ten Breadth thinking skills. These thinking skills broaden perception so that thinkers might see …
