Influence Of Choice On Motivation To Learn For Students With Autism: Effect On Student Interest, Writing Achievement, Latency, And Behavior, Theresa M. Haskins Nov 2012

Influence Of Choice On Motivation To Learn For Students With Autism: Effect On Student Interest, Writing Achievement, Latency, And Behavior, Theresa M. Haskins

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Improving learning outcomes and increasing motivation to learn for students with autism is a growing concern for educators today. While schools strive to fully include students with autism in general education classrooms, the number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder continues to rise, increasing the need for effective interventions that educators can easily implement in their classrooms. This pilot study investigates the influence of choice on a second grade student with autism and his motivation to write. His teacher’s perception on the use and effectiveness of choice in her classroom is also examined. Using a single-subject baseline design, …

Attributes Of Ownership, Reid Thompson, David A. Weisbach Nov 2012

Attributes Of Ownership, Reid Thompson, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

We examine the tax rules for ownership of fungible securities in light of three recent cases addressing this issue, Samueli, Calloway, and Anschutz. We argue that ownership has no economic basis under an income tax because under a pure income tax ownership would not be needed to measure income. Rather than acting as a bedrock principle based in economics, ownership in a realization-based income tax acts as a default rule for assigning tax characteristics to positions. For example, ownership determine characteristics such as holding periods, eligibility for special tax benefits such as the dividends received deduction, counting toward control or …

Blt1 And Mid1 Provide Overlapping Membrane Anchors To Position The Division Plane In Fission Yeast, Merce Guzman-Vendrell, Suzanne Baldissard, Maria Almonacid, Adeline Mayeux, Anne Paoletti, James B. Moseley Nov 2012

Blt1 And Mid1 Provide Overlapping Membrane Anchors To Position The Division Plane In Fission Yeast, Merce Guzman-Vendrell, Suzanne Baldissard, Maria Almonacid, Adeline Mayeux, Anne Paoletti, James B. Moseley

Dartmouth Scholarship

Spatial control of cytokinesis is essential for proper cell division. The molecular mechanisms that anchor the dynamic assembly and constriction of the cytokinetic ring at the plasma membrane remain unclear. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, the cytokinetic ring is assembled in the cell middle from cortical node precursors that are positioned by the anillin-like protein Mid1. During mitotic entry, cortical nodes mature and then compact into a contractile ring positioned in the cell middle. The molecular link between Mid1 and medial cortical nodes remains poorly defined. Here we show that Blt1, a previously enig- matic cortical node protein, promotes …

Temporal Operators And (Metaphysical) Presentism, Matthew J. Bell Nov 2012

Temporal Operators And (Metaphysical) Presentism, Matthew J. Bell

Theses

In a paper titled “Tense, Modality, and Semantic Values,” (Philosophical Perspectives, 2003) Jeffrey King argues (in part) that tenses in English do not function as sentential operators but that they are more akin to object-language quantifiers over times. Although not an explicit concern of King’s in the paper under consideration here, his analysis poses several prima facie difficulties for the metaphysical position known as “presentism” (that is, roughly, the view that only what exists at the present is real). Specifically, the commonsense motivation for presentism is threatened because of the discrepancy King proposes between how tense actually functions …

Salivary Cortisol And Interpersonal Functioning: An Event-Contingent Recording Study In The Offspring Of Parents With Bipolar Disorder, Mark A. Ellenbogen, Anne-Marie Linnen, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Marije Aan Het Rot, Sheilagh Hodgins, Simon N. Young Nov 2012

Salivary Cortisol And Interpersonal Functioning: An Event-Contingent Recording Study In The Offspring Of Parents With Bipolar Disorder, Mark A. Ellenbogen, Anne-Marie Linnen, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Marije Aan Het Rot, Sheilagh Hodgins, Simon N. Young

Psychology Faculty Publications

Despite a large body of research in non-human primates, the relationship between naturalistic patterns of social behaviour and basal cortisol levels has been understudied in humans. The present study examined the relationship between patterns of interpersonal functioning and cortisol levels in 23 offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (BD), at high risk for the development of an affective disorder, and 22 offspring of parents with no affective disorder (controls) in late adolescence and young adulthood. Using event-contingent recording, participants rated their dominance, submissiveness, quarrelsomeness, and agreeableness in naturally occurring social interactions over 14 consecutive days and provided salivary cortisol twice …

Quantitative, Spectrally-Resolved Intraoperative Fluorescence Imaging, Pablo A. Valdés, Frederic Leblond, Valerie L. Jacobs, Brian C. Wilson, Keith D. Paulsen, David W. Roberts

Dartmouth Scholarship

Intraoperative visual fluorescence imaging (vFI) has emerged as a promising aid to surgical guidance, but does not fully exploit the potential of the fluorescent agents that are currently available. Here, we introduce a quantitative fluorescence imaging (qFI) approach that converts spectrally-resolved data into images of absolute fluorophore concentration pixel-by-pixel across the surgical field of view (FOV). The resulting estimates are linear, accurate, and precise relative to true values, and spectral decomposition of multiple fluorophores is also achieved. Experiments with protoporphyrin IX in a glioma rodent model demonstrate in vivo quantitative and spectrally-resolved fluorescence imaging of infiltrating tumor margins for the …

Women In Transition: A Qualitative Analysis Of Definitions Of Poverty And Success, Crystale M. Marsh-Mcdonald, Sybil Schroeder Nov 2012

Women In Transition: A Qualitative Analysis Of Definitions Of Poverty And Success, Crystale M. Marsh-Mcdonald, Sybil Schroeder

The Qualitative Report

A phenomenological approach examined the stories of ten women transitioning from childhood poverty to adult life. Women were chosen from a pool of participants in an Upward Bound program designed to assist low-income and/or first-generation college students in the Midwestern United States. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to retrospectively explore their lived experiences. Recurring themes included facilitators of change, specifically the people, including mental health professionals, family members, romantic partners, and friends who helped make change possible. Another frequent theme found in the research was the impact an education had on the participants. Finally, the participants shared their own insights related …

Electron–Phonon Coupling And Structural Phase Transitions On Au/Mo(112), Keisuke Fukutani Nov 2012

Electron–Phonon Coupling And Structural Phase Transitions On Au/Mo(112), Keisuke Fukutani

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The electronic structures, many-body interactions and Fermi surface topologies of Au/Mo(112) were investigated in detail and were found to play important roles in the newly discovered order-disorder structural phase transition of the system. First, the high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was utilized to characterize the electronic band structure of Mo(112) in far greater details than before. This elucidated the existence of several surface-derived states and their dispersion relations in high precisions near the Fermi level, as well as the symmetries of the bulk and surface electronic states, which are in good quantitative agreement with the ab-initio calculations. Such thorough understanding of …

This review addresses methods for obtaining sequence information directly from unamplified genomic length DNA. Our generic starting point is a large piece of DNA that contains many thousands of base pairs (kilobase pairs, kbp) or even millions of base pairs (megabase pairs, Mbp). We would like to determine the genomic distance between two repeats of a given sequence, indicated by the red dots on the coiled DNA molecule in Figure 1. Let us consider the case where these sequences are restriction sites, which can be selectively cut using proteins known as restriction enzymes. For decades, gel electrophoresis served as the …

On The Calculation Of Price Sensitivities With A Jump-Diffusion Structure, Youssef El-Khatib, Abdulnasser Hatemi-J Nov 2012

On The Calculation Of Price Sensitivities With A Jump-Diffusion Structure, Youssef El-Khatib, Abdulnasser Hatemi-J

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

An integral part of successful risk management in modern financial markets is the accurate calculation of the price sensitivities of the underlying asset. There are a number of recent research papers that have focused on this important issue. A strand of literature has applied the finite difference method which is biased. Another strand of literature has made use of the Malliavin calculus within a jump diffusion framework. However, the existing papers have provided the price sensitivities by conditioning on some of the stochastic part of the complicated random process. The current paper provides price sensitivities in jump diffusion model without …

Simplified Single Source Xml Model: For Student-Centered Educational Content Management, Tamara K. Taylor

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study investigates XML as a single source, recommending solutions and defining future needs for educators to manage student-centered educational content for diverse user preferences and multi-modal delivery. This research proposes a simplified XML single source model for educational course content management and XSL transformation of course material into multi-modal display/output that enables student-centered learning. The reviewed literature exposed four problem areas related to content management in which an XML single source might be a solution. Reviewed and synthesized literature related to XML into a cubed relationship with opposing the sides of the cube (content management/single source, corporate goals/educational goals …

Today was a gorgeous fall day with full sunshine for most of the day and a light breeze rolling across campus. However last week was as frigid as ever and next week we are forecasted to get snow possibly. This shows us yet again how crazy the weather in Ohio is. Roll back the clock 6 weeks and the weather was like today at the beginning of Fall Break.

We discuss radio sources in the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey region. By cross-matching the X-ray sources in this field with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey archival data, we find 12 candidate matches. We present a classification scheme for radio/X-ray matches in surveys taken in or near the Galactic plane, taking into account other multiwavelength data. We show that none of the matches found here is likely to be due to coronal activity from normal stars because the radio to X-ray flux ratios are systematically too high. We show that one of the source could be a radio pulsar, and that …

Decades ago the Federal Government created a system of systems to assist in eradicating extreme poverty, however in 2011 the poverty rate was at its highest rate in almost two decades leaving millions of families and individuals searching for assistance. Given today’s statistics it should not come as a shock that more and more families and individuals have accessed the system and government spending has significantly increased. The deterioration of the safety net has left many lost, looking for answers and for change to happen.

This research study focused on a small community in Brattleboro, Vermont and asked: What are …
