Estimating The Effect Of The 2003 Gaming Tax Restructuring On Riverboat Gaming Volume, Mikael Ahlgren, Michael C. Dalbor, Ashok Singh

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper analyzes the effect of the 2003 Illinois gaming tax increase on gaming demand. To model gaming demand, slot machine coin-in is chosen for the period January 2000 to December 2006. Multiple regression analysis is used to model both the tax increase and account for seasonality in the data. A Box Jenkins model was employed to address correlation of error terms. The findings reveal that Illinois experienced a decrease in gaming demand when the tax increases took effect. The findings indicate that legislators should acknowledge and evaluate the negative economic pressures tax increases have on the gaming industry.

Examining Resident Perceptions Of Negative Gambling Impacts With Factual Evidence, Deepak Chhabra Dec 2012

Examining Resident Perceptions Of Negative Gambling Impacts With Factual Evidence, Deepak Chhabra

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study attempts to establish a dialogue between perceived negative impacts associated with borrowing money to gamble and the resulting bankruptcies in three ways: matching local resident opinions with evidence they are asked to provide; determining causal effects of evidence on perceptions; and confirming the bankruptcy issues by using historical data. The results of the study are mixed. On one hand, they indicate a close tie between borrowing perceptions and real facts. However, on the other hand, they also report that bankruptcy related perceptions are not based on evidence and suggest that several factors are at play besides the casino …

Gambling Windfall Decisions: Lottery Winners And Employment Behavior, Bengt Furaker, Anna Hedenus Dec 2012

Gambling Windfall Decisions: Lottery Winners And Employment Behavior, Bengt Furaker, Anna Hedenus

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Based on a 2005 survey among Swedish lottery winners, the article throws new light on what those receiving a sudden windfall do with their existing jobs. Many may continue to work as before the winning, but others may alter their work situation in one way or another. We focus on three possible changes: (i) quitting the job; (ii) going on unpaid full-time leave; and (iii) shortening one's working hours. In our study less than 12% quit working, approximately 24% took unpaid full-time leave, 16% reduced their working hours, but 62% did not make any of these changes. In other words, …

Gambling Behaviors Of Former Athletes: The Delayed Competitive Effect, Stephen M. Weiss, Sherri L. Loubier

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Gambling behaviors in current athletes, former athletes and non-athletes were examined. Gambling tendencies were determined from participants' responses on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). A delayed competitive effect among athletes that might surface in the form of pathological gambling was investigated. To test this novel theory, participants were divided into three groups: athletes who are currently playing sports, former athletes who used to play competitive sports and non-athletes who have never participated in competitive sporting events. A 2 x 3 independent groups AN OVA was utilized comparing SOGS scores across gender and athletic status. The mean score for former …

Do Job, Age, And Place Of Residence Matter For Gaming Activity? A Study Of The Mid-Colorado River Communities, Wuyang Hu, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Leigh J. Maynard Dec 2012

Do Job, Age, And Place Of Residence Matter For Gaming Activity? A Study Of The Mid-Colorado River Communities, Wuyang Hu, George W. Borden, Thomas R. Harris, Leigh J. Maynard

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

A household survey in the mid-Colorado River communities of Laughlin, Nevada and Bullhead City, Arizona examined local residents' gaming activities. A censored regression analysis distinguished between factors affecting gaming participation versus expenditures. Results suggest that gaming behavior can often be predicted with knowledge of individuals' residence, workplace, and other household demographic characteristics. Both local government agencies and casino managers can use the results to make better-informed decisions.

Industry Labor Force Quality: An Investigation From The Customer Service Perspective, Zheng Gu, Ricardo Chi Sen Siu

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

To investigate the labor force quality deficiency in the Macao casino industry, this study conducted a survey among Macao casino guests on their assessment of customer service. The mean scores of different service features were calculated and compared across casinos operated by different casino companies. Furthermore, different service features were examined for their importance to the overall customer satisfaction based on an estimated regression model. The study found that most of the service features were below satisfactory rating, but Wynn Resorts stood out as the top performer among the four gaming companies. The regression model identified "respect", "smile" and "skill" …

The Leader As Moral Agent: Praise, Blame, And The Artificial Person, Joseph Hester, Don Killian Dec 2012

The Leader As Moral Agent: Praise, Blame, And The Artificial Person, Joseph Hester, Don Killian

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The leader as the moral agent can be both a singular and a collective entity. Regardless, that individual or group of individuals must establish and live by a moral paradigm where self-respect and respect for co-workers is paramount. In essence, the moral agent must "lead by example." And it is not simply sufficient to choose the correct pathway but to care about choosing the correct pathway, stripping the decision-making process of disingenuous or superficial motives and injecting heart, concern, and passion for doing what is right.

Relating Nanoparticle Properties To Biological Outcomes In Exposure Escalation Experiments, Trina Patel, Cecile Low-Kam, Zhaoxia Ji, Haiyuan Zhang, Tian Xia, Andre E. Nel, Jeffrey I. Zinc, Donatello Telesca

COBRA Preprint Series

A fundamental goal in nano-toxicology is that of identifying particle physical and chemical properties, which are likely to explain biological hazard. The first line of screening for potentially adverse outcomes often consists of exposure escalation experiments, involving the exposure of micro-organisms or cell lines to a battery of nanomaterials. We discuss a modeling strategy, that relates the outcome of an exposure escalation experiment to nanoparticle properties. Our approach makes use of a hierarchical decision process, where we jointly identify particles that initiate adverse biological outcomes and explain the probability of this event in terms of the particle physico-chemical descriptors. The …

Synthesis Of Polymer Coated Ceria Nanoparticles For Biomedical Applications, J. Manuel Perez Figueroa, Atul Asati, Sudip Nath Dec 2012

Synthesis Of Polymer Coated Ceria Nanoparticles For Biomedical Applications, J. Manuel Perez Figueroa, Atul Asati, Sudip Nath

UCF Patents

Procedures and methods for synthesizing biodegradable polymer coated nanoceria result in stable nanoparticle preparations in aqueous systems and physiological relevant colloidal solutions, such as phosphate buffer saline. The coated nanoceria preparations increase the nanoparticle concentration in aqueous or colloidal solutions as most needed for antioxidant, free-radical scavenger, and autocatalytic biomedical applications, including, biological, pharmacological and potential clinical use. To meet this need, a facile synthetic procedure for preparation of a biodegradable polymer-coated nanoceria is disclosed; the preferred biodegradable polymer is dextran. The synthesis method occurs under ambient conditions in an aqueous phase without the use of surfactants and results in a …

Urban-Rural Differences In Concern About The Environment And Jobs In The Puget Sound Region, Thomas G. Safford, Matthew Cutler, Megan M. Henly, Karma Norman, Phillip Levin

Carsey Publications

Using data from a phone survey of 1,980 Puget Sound residents conducted in 2012, this fact sheet examines the severity of different environmental problems and compares the strength of concern about the lack of jobs and beliefs about the environment. Too few jobs and the loss of wildlife habitat were the two community issues most likely to be ranked as important problems among residents of Puget Sound. Environmental concern is higher among urban than rural residents, while those in rural areas are more likely than urbanites to believe the lack of jobs is a threat to their community.
