Comparison Of Coleoptera Emergent From Various Decay Classes Of Downed Coarse Woody Debris In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Usa, Michael L. Ferro, Matthew L. Gimmel, Kyle E. Harms, Christopher E. Carlton

Insecta Mundi

Coleoptera species composition and succession in downed woody debris habitats are poorly known in eastern North America. A photoeclector emergence chamber was used to concentrate Coleoptera that emerged from various decay classes of fine and coarse woody debris (FWD and CWD, respectively) collected in primary and secondary forest sites in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA. A total of 5673 adult beetle specimens, representing 305 lowest identifiable taxa within 227 genera and 51 families, was collected. One hundred fifteen species (38%) were represented by single individuals. Many more specimens and species were collected from CWD (4129 and 247, respectively) …

Effects Of Sn Doping On The Morphology And Properties Of Fe-Doped In2o3 Epitaxial Films, Tie Zhou, Lin Wei, Yanru Xie, Qinghao Li, Guoxiang Hu, Yanxue Chen, Shishen Yan, Guolei Liu, Liangmo Mei, Jun Jiao

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

(Sn, Fe)-codoped In₂O₃ epitaxial films were deposited on (111)-oriented Y-stabilized ZrO₂ substrates by pulsed laser deposition with constant Fe concentration and different Sn concentrations. The influence of Sn concentration on the crystal structure and properties of Fe-doped In₂O₃ ferromagnetic semiconductor films has been investigated systematically. Experimental results indicate that Sn doping can effectively reduce the surface roughness and suppresses breakup of the films into separated islands. At the same time, the optical band gap increases and the electrical properties improve correspondingly. However, although the carrier density increases dramatically with the Sn doping, no obvious change of the ferromagnetism is observed. …

Study Of Morphological Changes In Mgh2 Destabilized Libh4 Systems Using Computed X-Ray Microtomography, Tabbetha Dobbins, Shathabish Narasegowda, Leslie G. Butler

Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to apply three-dimensional x-ray microtomographic imaging to understanding morphologies in the diphasic destabilized hydride system: MgH2 and LiBH4. Each of the single phase hydrides as well as two-phase mixtures at LiBH4:MgH2 ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 2:1 were prepared by high energy ball milling for 5 minutes (with and without 4 mol % TiCl3 catalyst additions). Samples were imaged using computed microtomography in order to (i) establish measurement conditions leading to maximum absorption contrast between the two phases and (ii) determine interfacial volume. The optimal energy for measurement was determined to be 15 keV …

Modular Joystick Design For Virtual Reality Surgical Skills Training, Michael Head Nov 2012

Modular Joystick Design For Virtual Reality Surgical Skills Training, Michael Head

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A modular control interface and simulated virtual reality environment was designed and created in order to determine how the kinematic architecture of a control interface affects minimally invasive surgery. A user is able to selectively determine how many, the type, and location of degrees of freedom they require for the specific surgical simulation through the use of modular joints and constraint components. Furthermore, passive locking was designed and implemented through the use of inflated latex tubing around rotational degree of freedom joints. It is believed these features will have the ability to effectively simulate a variety of surgical simulations and …

Predicting Vehicle Dynamics For Roadside Safety Using Multibody Systems Simulations, Brett D. Schlueter Nov 2012

Predicting Vehicle Dynamics For Roadside Safety Using Multibody Systems Simulations, Brett D. Schlueter

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Accurate means for predicting vehicle dynamics is required in the design and testing of roadside safety hardware. Past research has used finite element (FE) modeling to this end, but multibody systems (MBS) modeling may provide a more efficient way to solve these problems. MBS modeling using Adams/Car was investigated by first compiling an introduction to the program, then performing basic vehicle dynamics simulations using a supplied model. Next, a model of a 2270 kg pickup was created and validated against physical test data involving impact with a speed bump. Finally, pickup trajectories in 4H:1V and 6H:1V V-ditches were predicted for …

Hydrologic Pulses Of Agricultural Waters: Effects On Wetland Plants And Soils In The Greenhouse, Constructed Drainage Ditches, And Bottomland Hardwood Forests, Melissa Boyce Koontz Nov 2012

Hydrologic Pulses Of Agricultural Waters: Effects On Wetland Plants And Soils In The Greenhouse, Constructed Drainage Ditches, And Bottomland Hardwood Forests, Melissa Boyce Koontz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Upstream water management affects downstream ecology, especially the wetland plants and soil. The primary goal of this dissertation was to quantify the dynamic responses of plants and soil to variable hydrologic inputs. Measurements were taken at different spatial scales, which were in the greenhouse, constructed drainage ditches, and bottomland hardwood forests. Wetland plants grown in greenhouse conditions were exposed to variable hydrology and aqueous nitrogen fertilization treatments. The study species was rice cutgrass, Leersia oryzoides. Individual plants were able to modify physiological responses, elemental tissue concentrations, and biomass allocation in order to withstand environmental stress. The plants grown in partially …

Civic Ecology: Living Community Systems For Sustainability, Tim Smith Nov 2012

Civic Ecology: Living Community Systems For Sustainability, Tim Smith

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Civic Ecology is a stakeholder-driven, whole systems framework for creating sustainable communities. The framework focuses on empowering citizens of all ages, cultures, and abilities to envision, create, and manage their community’s unique “software” -- the integrated energy, nutrient, water, waste, material, and food systems, as well as economic flows and cultural interactions that animate their place. Exploring and supporting these flows allows communities to enhance their local wealth (environmental, economic, and social), resilience, and competitiveness, and help them take control of designing and managing their future through collaboration and innovation. The Civic Ecology framework can be the foundation upon which …

Design And Development Of A Novel Transcranial Doppler Headset For Assessment Of Cerebral Blood Flow, Brian P. Watt Nov 2012

Design And Development Of A Novel Transcranial Doppler Headset For Assessment Of Cerebral Blood Flow, Brian P. Watt

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Examining physiologic responses of cerebral blood flow (CBF) for subjects in challenging situations requires development of new technology. Challenging circumstances include strenuous physical activity, intensive care, and surgical procedures involving the head, neck and thorax. Headset technology to employ transcranial Doppler (TCD), which is commercially available, fails to meet several requirements for monitoring in these situations. These requirements include stable signal acquisition, non-interference with other physiological monitors, ability to fit all head sizes including infants and children. The design and development of a novel TCD headset was performed to meet these requirements. The new device theoretically allows the user to …

Stable Fluorinated Antimicrobial Coatings, Asima Chakravorty Nov 2012

Stable Fluorinated Antimicrobial Coatings, Asima Chakravorty

Theses and Dissertations

Contact antimicrobials for use in the medical device industry are being studied extensively to minimize the risk of hospital acquired infections, which are among the top ten leading causes of death in the US. Surfaces modified with quaternary ammonium containing side chains have been known to demonstrate excellent antimicrobial properties. Prior work has indicated that polyurethane surfaces with copolyoxetane soft blocks consisting of fluorinated and quaternary ammonium side chains can act as good antimicrobials. However, stabilizing the positive charge on the surface has been a challenge. The dissertation is aimed at creating a surface modifier that would confer a stable …

Septin Phosphorylation And Coiled-Coil Domains Function In Cell And Septin Ring Morphology In The Filamentous Fungus Ashbya Gossypii, Rebecca A. Meseroll, Patricia Occhipinti, Amy S. Gladfelter Nov 2012

Septin Phosphorylation And Coiled-Coil Domains Function In Cell And Septin Ring Morphology In The Filamentous Fungus Ashbya Gossypii, Rebecca A. Meseroll, Patricia Occhipinti, Amy S. Gladfelter

Dartmouth Scholarship

Septins are a class of GTP-binding proteins conserved throughout many eukaryotes. Individual septin subunits associate with one another and assemble into heteromeric complexes that form filaments and higher-order structures in vivo. The mechanisms underlying the assembly and maintenance of higher-order structures in cells remain poorly understood. Septins in several organisms have been shown to be phosphorylated, although precisely how septin phosphorylation may be contributing to the formation of high-order septin structures is unknown. Four of the five septins expressed in the filamentous fungus, Ashbya gossypii, are phosphorylated, and we demonstrate here the diverse roles of these phosphorylation sites …
