Values-Based Leadership: A Shift In Attitude, Joseph Hester Dec 2012

Values-Based Leadership: A Shift In Attitude, Joseph Hester

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

To genuinely refer to leadership as “values-based,” a shift in attitude is required and the “ethics of care” must be embraced. This modification will ostensibly involve a subjective commitment to reason consistently and prudently, to care for others, and to dedicate oneself to reconsider his or her actions and behaviors.

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Effects Post Discharge Phone Calls Have On Readmission Rates For Medicare Beneficiaries, Heaven Owens

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

One in five Medicare patients is readmitted within 30 days of a previous hospitalization, which impacts patients and the healthcare system with exponential expenditures (Allaudeen, Vidyarthi, Maselli, Auerbach, 2011). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have mobilized recovery audits to begin recapturing funds related to readmission, and medical institutions must take an active role to ensure their financial integrity and protect their clinical reputation. For the purpose of this project, the population of interest was Medicare beneficiaries age 50 through 88 with a primary diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). The intervention included …

The Effect Of Co-Teaching On Student Achievement In Ninth Grade Physical Science Classrooms, Karen M. Lafever Dec 2012

The Effect Of Co-Teaching On Student Achievement In Ninth Grade Physical Science Classrooms, Karen M. Lafever

Dissertations

Co-teaching is a method that is increasing within schools across the US as educators strive to leave no child behind. It is a costly method, having two paid instructors in one classroom, with an average of 24 students shared between them. If it significantly increases the achievement of all students, it is well worth the costs involved. However, few studies have analyzed the effectiveness of this method on student achievement. This research follows the academic accomplishments of students in a ninth grade physical science course. Nine sections of the course “Force and Motion” were taught with a single teacher, and …

Structural Design Of Flexible Etfe Atrium Enclosures Using A Cable-Spring Support System, Ryan Paul Bessey Dec 2012

Structural Design Of Flexible Etfe Atrium Enclosures Using A Cable-Spring Support System, Ryan Paul Bessey

Theses and Dissertations

This research designed and analyzed an innovative structural support system for ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) atrium roofs between buildings. A cable-spring system was conceived, which is much lighter and more flexible than arches, frames, trusses, and beams which usually support ETFE roofs. Flexibility was a desirable property because the displacements may vary significantly among the buildings supporting the ETFE atrium roof during wind and seismic loading. The springs in the cable-spring system allow large differential displacements without exerting large support reactions on the buildings. The flexibility of the cable-spring system was compared to the cable-strut system which is used to support …

Viewpoints: Liberatory Ensemble And Character, Christopher Layton Clark Dec 2012

Viewpoints: Liberatory Ensemble And Character, Christopher Layton Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation, submitted in article format, explores how the physical movement theories of Anne Bogart's Viewpoints may lead to a liberatory setting, one which echoes the theories of Paolo Freire, for college theatre students. It examines whether Viewpoints is effective in creating a studio classroom culture and whether the Viewpoints exercises can lead to a heightened clarity in individual performance, with a much more satisfying and involved learning experience for students of the theatrical arts. In addition, this dissertation applies the theory of Mead's symbolic interactionism to the discoveries that students make while using Viewpoints exercises. Research methods include autoethnography, …

Adoption Of Innovation: Impact Of Rituximab (Rituxan®) Faster Infusion On Oncology Nurses' Perceptions, Practice, And Resource Utilization, Keith Dawson

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The translation of advances in clinical research into clinical practice in a manner that provides benefits while reducing potential harm is a challenge within the health care delivery system. Data from a phase III multicenter clinical trial led to the 2012 US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of a 90-minute infusion of rituximab (Rituxan) starting at Cycle 2 for patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma who did not experience a Grade 3 or 4 infusion-related adverse event during Cycle 1. The 90-minute rituximab faster infusion will result in a significant change in how nurses in the United States have been administering …

Like all undergraduate students, Savanna Yount had her fair share of class projects, homework, and research papers. But while most students are happy to say goodbye to a project once it is complete, Yount was more than willing to take hers to the next level. The Clinical Advisor, a widely read magazine for nurse practitioners and physician assistants, has selected Yount’s student article on postpartum depression (PPD) to be featured in its December 2012 issue. “Publishing a scholarly paper as an undergraduate is a big deal at this or any university,” said Dr. James Morgan, Associate Professor of Psychology and …

Resonance In Anisotropic Layered Media, Stephen P. Shipman, Aaron Welters Dec 2012

Resonance In Anisotropic Layered Media, Stephen P. Shipman, Aaron Welters

Faculty Publications

When a periodic anisotropic layered medium is interrupted by a slab of contrasting material, electromagnetic resonance can be manifest in a variety of ways. In one scenario, anisotropy allows for frequency intervals in which waves propagating perpendicular to the layers coexist with evanescent waves. This permits energy to be trapped within the slab at frequencies embedded in the continuous spectrum. These are unstable states that result in resonance under small perturbations. In another scenario, a stationary inflection point in the dispersion relation of an ambient magnetic anisotropic layered medium leads to unidirectional propagation and resonant interaction between Bloch waves and …

Spatiotemporal Capacity Management For The Last Level Caches Of Chip Multiprocessors, Dongyuan Zhan Dec 2012

Spatiotemporal Capacity Management For The Last Level Caches Of Chip Multiprocessors, Dongyuan Zhan

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Judicious management of on-chip last-level caches (LLC) is critical to alleviating the memory wall of chip multiprocessors (CMP). Although there already exist many LLC management proposals, belonging to either the spatial or temporal dimension, they fail to capture and utilize the inherent interplays between the two dimensions in capacity management. Therefore, this dissertation is targeted at exploring and exploiting the spatiotemporal interactions in LLC capacity management to improve CMPs' performance. Based on this general idea, we address four specific research problems in the dissertation.

For the private LLC organization, prior-art proposals can improve the efficacy of inter-core cooperative caching at …
