The 2011 annual meeting of the Children's Tumor Foundation, the annual gathering of the neurofibromatosis (NF) research and clinical communities, was attended by 330 participants who discussed integration of new signaling pathways into NF research, the appreciation for NF mutations in sporadic cancers, and an expanding pre-clinical and clinical agenda. NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis collectively affect approximately 100,000 persons in US, and result from mutations in different genes. Benign tumors of NF1 (neurofibroma and optic pathway glioma) and NF2 (schwannoma, ependymoma, and meningioma) and schwannomatosis (schwannoma) can cause significant morbidity, and there are no proven drug treatments for any form …

The Texas Heart Institute Journal
The BioSTAR bioabsorbable septal repair implant is a new transcatheter secundum atrial septal defect occlusion device that is absorbed and replaced by healthy native tissue. This retrospective analysis was designed to determine the most significant factors for its successful use in children. From October 2009 through December 2010, 33 children underwent catheterization to close secundum atrial septal defects by means of the BioSTAR. The mean age of the patients was 6.8 ± 3.4 years (range, 2.5-13 yr), and the mean body weight was 22.6 ± 11 kg (range, 11-55 kg). The device was successfully implanted in 91% of patients (30/33). …

Transcatheter Retrieval And Repositioning Of Embolized Stent From The Right Ventricle In An Infant, Daisuke Kobayashi, Harinder R Singh, Daniel R Turner, Thomas J Forbes, Srinath T Gowda
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Intracardiac stent embolization is a challenging complication in a small infant. A Palmaz stent was placed across the atrial septum in a 3-month-old boy to relieve symptoms of right-side heart failure. On routine chest radiography one week later, the stent was found to have embolized into the right ventricle. The stent was retrieved and repositioned by means of transcatheter technique, without subsequent complications. We found this method to be a viable alternative to surgery in a high-risk infant. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the successful transcatheter retrieval and repositioning of an expandable intravascular stent from an …

After Avandia: The Use Of Antidiabetic Drugs In Patients With Heart Failure, Khaled I Khalaf, Heinrich Taegtmeyer
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Managing diabetes mellitus is an ongoing concern, especially in the presence of heart failure. Recent reports have drawn attention to adverse cardiovascular events associated with the use of thiazolidinediones, including rosiglitazone (Avandia). In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration implemented a stringent “restricted access program” for the prescription of Avandia. Other studies, which have revealed increased mortality rates in association with tight glycemic control, raise serious concerns about managing diabetes in heart-failure patients.
Herein, we provide a perspective on the management of noninsulin-dependent diabetes in patients with heart failure. We point out that thiazolidinediones exert their major effects through …

Emotional Intelligence Levels In Baccalaureate-Prepared Early Career Registered Nurses, Glenda Schooler Reemts
Emotional Intelligence Levels In Baccalaureate-Prepared Early Career Registered Nurses, Glenda Schooler Reemts
Education
The increasing complexity of the healthcare environment calls for increasing emotional intelligence (EI) competence in nurses so as to establish effective relationships that facilitate positive patient outcomes. Because nurses need to be competent in EI, it is important to determine if professional nursing programs prepare graduates in emotional intelligence and whether years of professional experience contribute to development of emotional intelligence. This study assessed the emotional intelligence competence of 164 baccalaureate nursing alumni who graduated during the years 2007-2010 from three Benedictine institutions in the Midwest to see if there was growth of EI with experience as a registered nurse, …

A Pmsg-Based Wind Energy Conversion System Assisted By Photovoltaic Power, Abrez Mondal
Electrical and Computer Engineering
This work discusses a hybrid power conversion scheme consisting of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind energy system and photovoltaic panels. The two energy sources are integrated with a battery to store extra photovoltaic energy during the day and to meet any additional power requirement in the absence of sunlight. The PV panel is interfaced to the battery through a SEPIC converter for maximum power point tracking. The wind energy from the PMSG is supplied to the battery through a boost converter which regulates the output. The total power obtained from the hybrid system is fed to a three-phase …

Designing Of A Small Wearable Conformal Phased Array Antenna For Wireless Communications, Sayan Roy
Designing Of A Small Wearable Conformal Phased Array Antenna For Wireless Communications, Sayan Roy
Electrical and Computer Engineering
In this thesis, a unique design of a self-adapting conformal phased-array antenna system for wireless communications is presented. The antenna system is comprised of one microstrip antenna array and a sensor circuit. A 1x4 printed microstrip patch antenna array was designed on a flexible substrate with a resonant frequency of 2.47 GHz. However, the performance of the antenna starts to degrade as the curvature of the surface of the substrate changes. To recover the performance of the system, a flexible sensor circuitry was designed. This sensor circuitry uses analog phase shifters, a flexible resistor and operational-amplifier circuitry to compensate the …
Design Of An Audio-Visual Display For Cross-Modal Experimentation, Gail Jeanne Myers
Design Of An Audio-Visual Display For Cross-Modal Experimentation, Gail Jeanne Myers
Electrical and Computer Engineering
The present paper shows the characteristics of a hardware/software display capable of presenting, at different spatial locations, multiple audio-visual stimuli in real-time. The system has been developed to provide a tool in neuroscience in event-related potential (ERP) studies, with presentation delays of less than one millisecond. The high time precision achieved makes it possible to overcome problems from previously used technologies in order to create a realistic environment of cross-modal stimulation. The design presented here has been built using a modular approach, which makes the system flexible and adaptable to different experiments or studies. The capability of presenting different stimuli …

Analysis Of Deoxynivalenol And Deoxynivalenol-3-Glucoside In Wheat, Kimberly Burgess
Analysis Of Deoxynivalenol And Deoxynivalenol-3-Glucoside In Wheat, Kimberly Burgess
Food Safety
Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced in cereal grains infected by Fusarium Head Blight produced by Fusarium graminearium and Deoxynivalenol-3-β-D-glucopyranoside (DON-3G), were studied during processing using LC-MS-MS and GC. DON reduced significantly (P<0.05) 61.8% during milling into flour. Therefore, DON was concentrated mostly in the bran and germ. DON increased 40.8% during the fermentation stage of baking. DON increased in dough more than flour and mixed dough. Milling reduced by 23.7% but fermentation did not. But bread was significantly lower in DON-3G at 0.15 ppm than flour and dough at 0.31 ppm. The baking increased DON and decreased DON-3G showing a difference in stability of the mycotoxins during processing. Enzyme hydrolysis on DON using α-amylase, cellulase, protease, and xylanase, showed a significant increase with cellulase (20.8%), protease (11.4%), and xylanase (35.6%) compared to wheat composite. DON may be bound to the cell wall or protein component of the kernel.
Delineating Sexual Dangerousness, Fredrick E. Vars
Delineating Sexual Dangerousness, Fredrick E. Vars
Articles
Only “dangerous” individuals may be indefinitely detained. Is a one percent chance of a future crime clear and convincing evidence of dangerousness? For sex offenders, fear and uncertainty in case law leave open this passage to limbo. This Article closes it. The due process balancing test used to evaluate standards of proof provides the framework. This Article explains the relationship between the standard of proof and the definition of “dangerous” and argues that only an approach combining the two is consistent with the Constitution. Applying decision theory with assumptions favoring the government, this Article calculates a minimum likelihood of recidivism …
Ecological And Sociological Considerations Of Wind Energy: A Multidisciplinary Study, Lucas J. Bicknell
Ecological And Sociological Considerations Of Wind Energy: A Multidisciplinary Study, Lucas J. Bicknell
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Wind energy is quickly becoming a critical technology for providing Americans with renewable energy, and rapid construction of wind facilities may have impacts on both wildlife and human communities. Understanding both the social and ecological issues related to wind energy development could provide a framework for effectively meeting human energy needs while conserving species biodiversity. In this research I looked at two aspects of wind energy development: public attitudes toward wind energy development and wind facility impacts on local bat populations. These papers present aspects of wind energy development that have been the subject of increasing study. This preliminary research …
Population Genetics Of The Western Prairie Fringed Orchid, Andrew August Ross
Population Genetics Of The Western Prairie Fringed Orchid, Andrew August Ross
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
The Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (WPFO) Platanthera praeclara is listed as a federally threatened species in the United States. The habitat of the WPFO is highly fragmented, causing the possibility of genetic isolation among populations. I assessed microsatellite polymorphism in eight WPFO populations using six polymorphic microsatellite markers. High levels of within population genetic diversity were found: 12.5 alleles per locus and mean expected heterozygosity (HE) of 0.622. The genetic structure among the populations was weak; the overall FST value was 0.0692. A mantel test showed no correlation between genetic and geographic distance r = 0.2793 (P = 0.31). The …
Phosphate Removal And Recovery Using Iron Nanoparticles And Iron Cross-Linked Biopolymer, Talal Bakheet Almeelbi
Phosphate Removal And Recovery Using Iron Nanoparticles And Iron Cross-Linked Biopolymer, Talal Bakheet Almeelbi
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles and iron cross-linked alginate (FCA) beads were successfully used for the first time for phosphate removal and recovery. NZVI was successfully used for phosphate removal and recovery. Batch studies indicated a removal of ~96 to 100% phosphate in 30 min (1, 5, and 10 mg PO43--P/L with 400 mg NZVI/L). Phosphate removal efficiency by NZVI was 13.9 times higher compared to Microscale ZVI (MZVI) particles. The successful rapid removal of phosphate by NZVI from aqueous solution is expected to have great ramification for cleaning up nutrient rich waters. The presence of sulfate, nitrate, and humic …
Ecological Complexity Of Non-Native Species Impacts In Desert Aquatic Systems, Sujan Maduranga Henkanaththegedara
Ecological Complexity Of Non-Native Species Impacts In Desert Aquatic Systems, Sujan Maduranga Henkanaththegedara
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Without an adequate understanding of complex interactions between native and non-native species, management of invasive species can result in unforeseen detrimental impacts. I used both field and laboratory experiments to study reciprocal species interactions between the endangered Mohave tui chub (Siphateles bicolor mohavensis) and invasive western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). I also examined the impacts of both fish species on the aquatic invertebrate communities in desert springs. I demonstrate a case of intraguild predation (IGP) as a mechanism facilitating co-persistence of the endangered Mohave tui chub with invasive mosquitofish using field mesocosm experiments. In this case of IGP, adult tui chub …
