From Bacteria To Human: Biophysical Studies Of Inward Rectifying Potassium Channels, Wayland Cheng Jan 2012

From Bacteria To Human: Biophysical Studies Of Inward Rectifying Potassium Channels, Wayland Cheng

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Inward rectifying potassium: Kir) channels are important in regulating cellular excitability in organs such as the heart, brain and pancreas. Prokaryotic KirBac channels are structurally similar to eukaryotic Kir channels, but distantly related and of unknown function. The goal of this thesis has been to investigate the functional properties of KirBac1.1 and to relate these findings to eukaryotic Kir channels. The approach was to use recombinantly-expressed, purified K+ channels--KirBac1.1, KcsA, Kir2.1 and Kir2.2--in order to integrate findings from functional studies, using liposomal flux assays and patch-clamping, with high-resolution crystal structures. By reconstituting KirBac1.1 into giant liposomes for patch-clamping, I show …

American Women Writers, Visual Vocabularies, And The Lives Of Literary Regionalism, Katherine Mary Bloomquist Jan 2012

American Women Writers, Visual Vocabularies, And The Lives Of Literary Regionalism, Katherine Mary Bloomquist

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

American Women Writers, Visual Vocabularies, and the Lives of Literary Regionalism reads American literary regionalism through its visual vocabularies--such as sketches, photographs and portraits. Though critics often deemed this genre inferior or unfinished, using visual vocabularies of the "sketch" or "local color," later books of regionalism simply brim with visual vocabularies, when characters are seeking the lives of others or filling in the blanks of their own. The writers in my dissertation--Sarah Orne Jewett, Willa Cather, and Ann Petry--ground literary regionalism in the politics of writing places, but draw also from the arts of life writing circulating in the late …

Cell Signaling Components Of The Drosophila Circadian Pacemaker, Laura B. Duvall Jan 2012

Cell Signaling Components Of The Drosophila Circadian Pacemaker, Laura B. Duvall

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Daily rhythms in physiology are conserved throughout evolution. The molecular oscillations that underlie rhythms have been well characterized and are required in a specific set of pacemaker cells in the Drosophila brain for locomotor rhythms. These cells are divided into distinct subgroups and evidence suggests that subgroups of pacemaker cells may control distinct components of circadian behavior although these assignments are not rigid, and depend critically upon environmental conditions. Plasticity in the neural circuits controlling circadian behavior allow the animal flexibility in responding to fluctuations in environmental inputs, for example changing day length over seasons.

Young Children's Understanding Of The Relationship Between Conventionality And Communication, Kathleen R. Sullivan Jan 2012

Young Children's Understanding Of The Relationship Between Conventionality And Communication, Kathleen R. Sullivan

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation explores children's understanding of the conventionality of language, the notion that shared knowledge of the meanings of linguistic symbols enables communication using those symbols. Three studies investigate whether monolingual children recognize that different speakers share knowledge of lexical conventions, in this case the labels for objects, independent of children's own knowledge of those labels. Further, children's ability to use evidence of shared conventional knowledge when reasoning about communicative interactions is tested using a novel third-party communication task. Results indicate that three-year-old children track consistent labeling of novel objects across different speakers, and infer underlying shared knowledge of object …

Writing Workshop: A Comparison Of Theory And Practice, Brandi Dawn Delveau Jan 2012

Writing Workshop: A Comparison Of Theory And Practice, Brandi Dawn Delveau

Honors Program Theses

Good writing starts with good teachers. Being a good teacher of writing involves understanding the most effective practices of writing. These effective practices are brought together through the implementation of the writing workshop in classrooms, although there will be slight variations from one author or educator to the next. Having a firm understanding of the writing workshop is a foundation for teaching writing in any elementary grade. The writing workshop is a teaching framework that allows children to learn to use the writing process, which consists of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The various components of the workshop (mini-lessons, …

Key Elements Of Poverty Influencing Language Development And Academic Achievement, Joanna L. Eggert Jan 2012

Key Elements Of Poverty Influencing Language Development And Academic Achievement, Joanna L. Eggert

Honors Program Theses

This paper investigates central issues surrounding poverty and how it influences a child's language development and academic achievement. It examines the differences in amounts of language input in the home environments of children from varying socioeconomic statuses and how this shapes their language acquisition. The research also explores the exposure to prenatal teratogens in addition to environmental toxins associated with poverty that may play a role in disparities in development, such as lead exposure. Furthermore, the issue of unequal healthcare and educational access between individuals of differing income levels is addressed. Ultimately, the purpose of this research is to call …

Lost In Translation: In Search Of The "Real" "Wulf And Eadwacer", John Anderson Jan 2012

Lost In Translation: In Search Of The "Real" "Wulf And Eadwacer", John Anderson

Honors Program Theses

In this thesis, I seek to uncover the nature of translation through examining those elements of "Wulf and Eadwacer" that work against producing a definitive translation. Using the combined lenses of literary analysis and the philosophy of language, I will also investigate the ties between translation and interpretation inherent in this work and what we can learn about the project of translation in general, ultimately arriving at my own re-presentation of the text. I will then briefly consider how this can inform our approaches to translations of other texts, in particular our understanding of translations of the Bible, one of …

Spanish Through Music: A Model For The Content-Based Classroom, Anna Gansen Jan 2012

Spanish Through Music: A Model For The Content-Based Classroom, Anna Gansen

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to identify reasons for Spanish teachers to implement content-based instruction and provide resources that support appropriate integration of musical content into foreign language classrooms while simultaneously upholding the priorities of the national standards for foreign language learning. I have combined research on content-based instructional methods with research on the relationship between language and music to determine common strategies foreign language teachers should remember when implementing music-based instruction. In addition, descriptions are included of a variety of music-centered activities that address national foreign language standards for learning and enhance both normal and content-based classrooms. Finally, …

Family Matters: Influential Factors Of Choice Regarding The Family-Career Dichotomy For The Next Generation Of Mothers, Beth Lindberg Jan 2012

Family Matters: Influential Factors Of Choice Regarding The Family-Career Dichotomy For The Next Generation Of Mothers, Beth Lindberg

Honors Program Theses

This study was performed for an undergraduate thesis project for a university honor's program. The thesis project sought to discover female college students' viewpoints on stay-at-home mothering and various influences on said viewpoints through the administration of a survey to college women. Various statistical tests, such as t-test, chi-square, correlation, and regression tests, were completed to analyze the data. From this data, it was found that most participants in the study had positive, socially constructed, stereotypical viewpoints of stay-at-home mothers. Three influences were found to be unique predictors for the choice to plan to be a full-time stay-at-home mother: number …

Spinning Wheels, Weaving Words, And Cupbearing: The Wife's Lament And Female Power, Agency And Resistance In Anglo-Saxon England, Alison Leytem Jan 2012

Spinning Wheels, Weaving Words, And Cupbearing: The Wife's Lament And Female Power, Agency And Resistance In Anglo-Saxon England, Alison Leytem

Honors Program Theses

Looking through the lens of Anglo-Saxon womens' roles as peaceweavers, cupbearers, inciters or "whetting women" in their ability to practice and assert power, resistance and agency within conjugal bonds with husbands or lovers, we can better understand the ambiguous Old English poem The Wife's Lament. By exploring the poem, documents that history has left us, and previous foundational research, I will investigate whether the role women played in Anglo Saxon society mattered, and if either way, they had significant opportunity for agency.

An Evaluation Of The Species Status Of Physaria Intermedia (Brassicaceae), Katie Arp Jan 2012

An Evaluation Of The Species Status Of Physaria Intermedia (Brassicaceae), Katie Arp

Honors Program Theses

The taxonomy of the genus Physaria (Brassicaceae) has been continually under revision as many species groups have proved difficult to resolve. Physaria intermedia (S. Watson) O'Kane Al-Shehbaz, has been a species whose circumscription has more recently been questioned and in need of clarification. The uncertainty surrounding the species stemmed from a combination of its geographical distribution, inhabiting two disjunct locations, as well as some minor differences in morphology that warranted a closer look. The species had been described as occupying southern Utah, northern and eastern (in northern 2/3) Arizona and southwest New Mexico with the remaining specimens inhabiting an isolated …

Piercing The Veil Of Secrecy: Securing Effective Exchange Of Information To Remedy The Harmful Effects Of Tax Havens, Hedda Leikvang Jan 2012

Piercing The Veil Of Secrecy: Securing Effective Exchange Of Information To Remedy The Harmful Effects Of Tax Havens, Hedda Leikvang

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The enforcement of tax laws abroad has long posed problems for authorities. However, that enforcement becomes increasingly more problematic when the information necessary for proper enforcement is located within an impenetrable system whose sole purpose is to protect that information from tax authorities in other countries. Although much effort has been expended to remedy the harmful effects of tax havens, few strategies have succeeded. But with the prospects of a record federal deficit and an ever-increasing tax gap, U.S. authorities have begun to look for new ways to strengthen the enforcement of U.S. tax laws abroad. The most prominent of …

The Mass Media's Coverage Of Political Campaigns, Katherine Elizabeth Pauk Jan 2012

The Mass Media's Coverage Of Political Campaigns, Katherine Elizabeth Pauk

Honors Program Theses

This study explores the media's coverage of political campaigns focusing particularly on the differences in the amount of issue coverage used by different media outlets. By analyzing the transcripts of five media outlets (The New York Times, the NBC Nightly News, The O'Reilly Factor, The Rachel Maddow Show, and Anderson Cooper 360) I was able to compare and contrast the differences in types of media coverage as well as explore the reasons for those differences. I ran an independent samples T-test in order to find any statistical significance in the data. My study found that there were significant differences among …

The Grass Is Always Greener: Keystone Xl, Transboundary Harms, And Guidelines For Cooperative Environmental-Impact Assessment, Wyatt Sassman Jan 2012

The Grass Is Always Greener: Keystone Xl, Transboundary Harms, And Guidelines For Cooperative Environmental-Impact Assessment, Wyatt Sassman

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

While general understanding of environmental harms has become more geographically sophisticated, environmental-impact assessment (EIA) law has lagged behind. Although nations now understand complex environmental processes and relationships that extend well beyond their borders, EIA law remains trapped in a domestic structure that is ill-prepared to assess harms outside its jurisdiction. By looking at the U.S. environmental assessment of the Keystone XL pipeline, this Note recasts the problem of transboundary environmental harms in EIA using recent, remarkable events. Key assumptions made in the Keystone XL assessment illustrate that the typical domestic structure of EIA law does not allow adequate assessment of …

Alumni Participation In Lis Program Review: The Case Of Mlis At University Of The Punjab, Khalid Mahmood, Farzana Shafique

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Emergence of the digital era has posed rapid social, cultural and technological changes and challenges to the human society. The library as a social institution and librarianship as a service-oriented profession are now at the focal point of revolutionary changes. These changes not only added a new dimension of information science to the library education during the mid 1960s but further crystallization of the information and retrieval systems during 1970s caused the information science component to gain an upper hand, transforming the discipline and introducing new concerns, issues and challenges. Keeping this reality in view Rehman [1] pointed out that …

Preparing Lis Professionals For Leadership, Suresh Jange

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In the Changing scenario of Information industry and tremendous impact of multi-disciplinary disciplines, Library and Information Science has emerged as a multi-disciplinary subject with a fusion of educational technology, psychology, management, and information technology and computer science. The traditional roles of the library and information centres are no longer adequate to support the changed environment. It is seen in an academic and research environment particularly state universities and colleges; library leadership is lacking results an unhealthy environment that becomes an obstacle for development of an institution or library to achieve the desired goals. Hence, a new kind of leadership with …

Bibliographic Control Of Publications: The Impact On African Countries, Anthony Agena Igbashal, Jacob F. Tsegba

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

African continent is full of written culture and activities being produced and preserved by her people, not only for posterity but for academics, students and the larger bibliographic communities. That information is generated on the face of African continent on daily bases is not in doubt as printing and publishing has become the order of the day. Libraries and information centers are expected to record and make available all that is written on request. Bibliographic control has become a major determinant of book accessibility and utilization and a key factor to information search. In many countries of the world, individuals …

This paper focuses on an evaluation of recidivism rates of parolees with severe and persistent mental illness enrolled in a mental health/ substance abuse treatment program (M-COIT) at a community mental health center in southeastern Michigan. The two partners in the study were a community mental health center located in a city bordering the southern part of Detroit and Eastern Michigan University located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The purpose of the study was to identify the recidivism rates and factors that affected these rates for parolees who participated in the M-COIT Program. This was a retrospective medical record review. The practical …

Pursuing High Performance In Rural Health Care, A. Clinton Mackinney, Keith J. Mueller, Andrew F. Coburn, Jennifer P. Lundblad, Timothy D. Mcbride, Sidney D. Watson

All Faculty Scholarship

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) called for transformation of the United States health care system to make it safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable.1 The journey toward these six aims in public policy and the private sector is underway, but fundamental challenges detailed by the IOM remain. Patients are injured at alarming rates, wide variation in care exists across geographies, patients complain of insensitive and/or inaccessible health care providers, health care costs are nearly twice that in other developed countries, and nearly 50 million Americans lack health insurance. As a result, our health care is often fragmented, …

New Nip In The Bud: Does The Obama Board's Preemptive Strike Doctrine Enhance Tactical Employment Law Strategies?, Michael C. Duff Jan 2012

New Nip In The Bud: Does The Obama Board's Preemptive Strike Doctrine Enhance Tactical Employment Law Strategies?, Michael C. Duff

All Faculty Scholarship

In this essay I revisit the classic debate concerning when worker activity is sufficiently “concerted” to be covered by the National Labor Relations Act, a statute covering certain private sector protected “concerted” activity by workers. When workers are obviously engaged in concerted “labor” activity — classically activity like striking, picketing, or even just complaining about working conditions — they are generally protected against employer reprisal for doing so. Over the last few decades there has been disagreement about the definition and limits of “concert.” My renewed interest in this dormant but not dead subject was piqued by the “Obama Board’s” …

The Hierarchy That Wasn’T There: Elevating “Usage” To Its Rightful Position For Contracts Governed By The Cisg, William P. Johnson

Under domestic U.S. sales law, usage of trade is relevant in ascertaining the meaning of an agreement, and it can be used to supplement, qualify, or explain an agreement. However, usage of trade may not be used under domestic U.S. sales law to contradict a written agreement. Moreover, any course of performance or course of dealing between the parties will prevail over inconsistent usage of trade. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, or CISG, similarly provides for consideration of usage to establish the terms of the agreement between the parties, as well as to …

Cyber Commodification, Miriam A. Cherry Jan 2012

Cyber Commodification, Miriam A. Cherry

All Faculty Scholarship

When it comes to commodification on the Internet, it is a wild, wild World Wide Web. Researching encyclopedia articles for Wikipedia is an unpaid labor of love, but connecting to your friends on Facebook is a $100 billion enterprise. Newspaper classified advertisements are definitely commercial, but their equivalent on Craigslist was mostly non-commercial – until the Delaware Chancery Court stepped in. Selling your organs is prohibited in the United States, whereas selling hair promises to rescue third-world citizens from poverty. Selling sex is illegal as prostitution, but selling adultery online is a hot new business model. And a small company …

Support Of Non-Biological Children In Jewish Law, J. David Bleich Jan 2012

Support Of Non-Biological Children In Jewish Law, J. David Bleich

Articles

Adoption as a legal institution is unknown in Jewish law. Suppression of parental identity, as generally occurs in closed adoption, is banned “lest the earth become filled with licentiousness” (Leviticus 19:29). Rabbinic tradition interprets that verse as expressing concern regarding the possibility of a future incestuous marriage. Nevertheless, raising an orphan in one’s home is regarded as highly meritorious. However, binding obligations of support and maintenance can be undertaken only by means of contract. Such a contract in favor of a stepchild may be verbal if entered into at the time of marriage. Otherwise, a formal kinyan, i.e., one of …

The Foolosophy Of Justice And The Enigma Of Law, Peter Goodrich Jan 2012

The Foolosophy Of Justice And The Enigma Of Law, Peter Goodrich

Articles

The article explores the symbolic meaning of legal images, particularly the figure of Justitia (Justice) and her blindfold, in 16th-century legal texts. It argues that these images, often overlooked, are enigmatic symbols rooted in legal and theological traditions, conveying meanings that have been forgotten over time. The blindfold, in particular, signifies the separation between divine and human law, emphasizing the limits of human understanding and the enigmatic nature of legal symbolism.

The Sexual Socialization Of Sexual Offenders: How They Learn About Sexuality And How It Influences Their Future Behaviors, Erin Nicole Ditscheit

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Every day, stories of individuals who have been sexually victimized dominate headline news. Despite the large amount of research conducted on sexual offenders, there is no known single etiology for their offense. This study investigates how sexual socialization plays a role in an offender's sexual attitudes and beliefs. Using data from a sample of 71 convicted sexual offenders from a single district in the Midwest, it was found that there is a relationship between certain media sources and negative attitudes towards women and sexuality. Additionally, by comparing the convicting offense of each of the participants and their attitudes, it was …
