Examining Students’ Experiences As A Foundation For Multicultural Curriculum Development, Candace Schlein, Elaine Chan Jan 2012

Examining Students’ Experiences As A Foundation For Multicultural Curriculum Development, Candace Schlein, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

CANADA IS BECOMING increasingly diverse through immigration and the birth of children into immigrant families (Statistics Canada, 2007a, 2007b, 2007c, 2008). This cultural pluralism is also reflected in school communities. Thus, there is a related growing requisite for issues of educational quality to be defined according to notions pertaining to multicultural education in order for educators to identify and to develop innovative ways of meeting the needs of diverse classroom populations. Moreover, there is a progressive need for pre–service and in–service educators to learn about effective ways of working with English Language Learners (ELLs) to support their rapid integration into …

On 'Shock:' The Artistic Imagination Of Benjamin And Brecht, Mara Polgovsky Ezcurra Jan 2012

On 'Shock:' The Artistic Imagination Of Benjamin And Brecht, Mara Polgovsky Ezcurra

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

“Shock” is perhaps the central concept of modernist aesthetics and Walter Benjamin its best known theorist. It has been well documented that Benjamin’s long-lasting friendship with Bertolt Brecht and the latter’s dramatic theory had a profound influence on his thinking about this notion. Brecht's techniques of interruption and juxtaposition in the practice of epic theater were in close relationship with Benjamin’s use of montage as a mechanism to “liberate” meaning. Despite Theodor Adorno’s and Gershom Scholem’s attempt to situate Benjamin’s thought in a different aesthetic tradition, Brecht’s understanding of Verfremdung (estrangement) and Benjamin’s idea of “shock” are often deemed identical. …

Buyer's Equilibrium With Capacity Constraints And Restricted Mobility: A Recursive Approach, Gabriele Camera, Jaehong Kim Jan 2012

Buyer's Equilibrium With Capacity Constraints And Restricted Mobility: A Recursive Approach, Gabriele Camera, Jaehong Kim

ESI Working Papers

We study a decentralized trading model as in Peters (1984), where heterogeneous market participants face a trade-o between price and trade probability. We present a novel proof of existence of a unique demand vector in Nash equilibrium, based on a recursive approach that exploits the monotonicity of matching functions.

Performance-Based Compensation And Firm Value: Experimental Evidence, Glenn Pfeiffer, Timothy W. Shields Jan 2012

Performance-Based Compensation And Firm Value: Experimental Evidence, Glenn Pfeiffer, Timothy W. Shields

ESI Working Papers

Motivated by research reporting positive price reactions to adoption of performance-based compensation plans, we examine price reactions to compensation contracting in experimental markets. The design allows us to manipulate variables separately and study issues of adverse selection (sorting) and moral hazard (incentives). We find that managers select contracts based on their private information, and that information is conveyed to the market by the choice of compensation contract and reflected in price. Additionally, we find that managers do not always exert costly effort in spite of favorable incentives to do so (shirking). As a result, the market is skeptical of incentive …

Asymmetry And Deception In The Investment Game, Irma Clots-Figueras, Roberto Hérnan-Gonzalez, Praveen Kujal Jan 2012

Asymmetry And Deception In The Investment Game, Irma Clots-Figueras, Roberto Hérnan-Gonzalez, Praveen Kujal

ESI Working Papers

Several situations in our daily interactions are characterized by uncertainty and asymmetric information regarding the final outcomes. For example, an investor may overstate a project’s value, or a superior may choose to under, or over, state the gains from a project to a subordinate. We modify the standard investment game to study the effect of possible deception, i.e. over-, or under-, statement of the true value, on investee (and investor) behavior. We find that deception is prevalent and around 66% of the investors send false messages. Investors both over-, and under-, state the true value of the multiplier, k. We …

Facing Your Opponents: Social Identification And Information Feedback In Contests, Shakun D. Mago, Anya C. Savikhin, Roman M. Sheremeta Jan 2012

Facing Your Opponents: Social Identification And Information Feedback In Contests, Shakun D. Mago, Anya C. Savikhin, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

We experimentally investigate the effect of social identification and information feedback on individual behavior in contests. Identifying subjects through photo display decreases efforts. Providing information feedback about others’ effort does not affect the aggregate effort levels but it does change the dynamics of individual behavior. We develop a behavioral model based on relative payoff maximization, and use it to estimate the degree of pro-social/status-seeking behavior. We find that decrease in ‘social distance’ between group members through photo display promotes pro-social behavior. Information feedback reduces the within-group volatility in effort level and facilitates greater adherence to the ‘group norm.’ Finally, in …

Higher-Order Beliefs In Simple Trading Models, Timothy W. Shields, Baohua Xin Jan 2012

Higher-Order Beliefs In Simple Trading Models, Timothy W. Shields, Baohua Xin

ESI Working Papers

We examine the role of higher order beliefs in asset markets where coordination between a buyer and seller can lead to gains to trade. The scenarios are modeled such that trader’s strategies do not only depend upon their beliefs of underlying economic phenomena, but also upon the others’ beliefs regarding the beliefs of themselves. Under certain parameters the breakdown of coordination is predicted–even when both traders are certain the underlying phenomena dictates trade is advantageous. We demonstrate the equilibrium predictions can be constructed via a small number of iterated thought exercises. The experimental design allows us to control for various …

Are You A Good Employee Or Simply A Good Guy? Influence Costs And Contract Design, Brice Corgnet, Ismael Rodriguez-Lara Jan 2012

Are You A Good Employee Or Simply A Good Guy? Influence Costs And Contract Design, Brice Corgnet, Ismael Rodriguez-Lara

ESI Working Papers

We develop a principal–agent model with a moral hazard problem in which the principal has access to a hard signal (the level of output) and a soft behavioral signal (the supervision signal) about the agent's level of effort. In our model, the agent can initiate influence activities and manipulate the behavioral signal. These activities are costly for the principal as they detract the agent from the productive task. We show that the agent's ability to manipulate the behavioral signal leads to low-powered incentives and increases the cost of implementing the efficient equilibrium as a result. Interestingly, the fact that manipulation …

Experimental Evidence On The Properties Of The California’S Cap And Trade Price Containment Reserve, Rachel Bodsky, Domenic Donato, Kevin James, David Porter

ESI Working Papers

We report on a series of experiments to examine the properties of California’s Reserve Sale allocation mechanism to be implemented as part of the forthcoming cap and trade program and compare it with an alternative reserve sale mechanism. The proposed reserve sale mechanism allows covered entities to purchase allowances after the primary auction sale at fixed prices. If demand for units is greater the amount supplied in the reserve sale, a Proportional Rationing rule is used to distribute allowances based on submitted request for units. This rule is contrasted with to an alternative rule, Equal Rationing in which allowances are …

Multi-Battle Contests: An Experimental Study, Shakun D. Mago, Roman M. Sheremeta Jan 2012

Multi-Battle Contests: An Experimental Study, Shakun D. Mago, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

This study examines behavior of subjects in simultaneous and sequential multi-battle contests. In simultaneous contests, subjects make positive bids in each battle 80% of the time and bids fall within the predicted boundaries. However, 35% of the time subjects make positive bids in only two, instead of all three, battles and they significantly overuse moderately high bids. In sequential contests, theory predicts sizable bids in the first battle and no bids in the subsequent battles. Contrary to this prediction, subjects significantly underbid in the first battle and overbid in subsequent battles. Consequently, instead of always ending in the second battle, …

Reflected Appraisal Through A 21st-Century Looking Glass, Harry M. Wallace, Dianne M. Tice Jan 2012

Reflected Appraisal Through A 21st-Century Looking Glass, Harry M. Wallace, Dianne M. Tice

Psychology Faculty Research

The concept of reflected appraisal—also known as reflected self-appraisal or the looking-glass self—refers to the processes by which people's self-views are influenced by their perceptions of how others view them. Reflected appraisal is reflected in the metaphor that people use others as a mirror (i.e., looking glass) for judging themselves, and also in the sense that others' judgments are reflected in self-judgments. The concept refers simultaneously to person A's self-appraisal and person A's appraisal of person B's appraisal of person A. These appraisals exert reciprocal influence: Self-views affect judgments of others' views, and judgments …

The Development Of An Intervention To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening Among Guatemalan Women, Ellen Christine Thompson Jan 2012

The Development Of An Intervention To Increase Cervical Cancer Screening Among Guatemalan Women, Ellen Christine Thompson

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Latin American women experience higher rates of cervical cancer, mainly due to lower rates of participation in cervical cancer screening. This study used community-based participatory research to create and implement a tailored lay health worker (LHW) outreach program to increase cervical cancer screening participation in a Guatemalan community. Surveys with Guatemalan women revealed that they would be more likely to participate in screening if they had more information and one of their main sources of information was their peers. An analysis of the existing resources showed that there was not a method of communicating accurate information through the social networks …

Environmental Justice And Hydraulic Fracturing: The Ascendancy Of Grassroots Populism In Policy Determination, Nancy C. Carre Jan 2012

Environmental Justice And Hydraulic Fracturing: The Ascendancy Of Grassroots Populism In Policy Determination, Nancy C. Carre

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Exploration and development of natural gas resources includes the use of hydraulic fracturing, a process that can potentially contaminate domestic water sources. While industry seeks access to BLM leases for new wells, their proximity to communities can have serious negative consequences on their health and life style, raising questions of how sites are selected and concerns about environmental justice. This case scenario explores the manner in which the residents of Delta County, Colorado, organized in response to proposed lease sales, and how grassroots mobilization uses technology and proactive mechanisms to affect public policy.

Descriptions Of Childhood Trauma, Effects Of The Trauma, And How Adults Moved Through The Trauma To Normalized Behavior, Alice Katherine Schaaf

Dissertations

Problem. People who are not able to overcome the effects of childhood trauma often waste their human potential on substance abuse and illegal and illicit lifestyles; they end up in prison, uneducated, or develop self-destructive behavior. They often struggle with poor learning and social skills and are not able to be successful in life. However, some individuals do succeed. This study interviewed eight individuals who suffered childhood trauma and developed ways of overcoming that trauma to live prosperous, productive, and, in many regards, full lives.

Method. This qualitative study used interviews to explore how adults traumatized as children described childhood …

The idea of integrating both content areas in order to enhance and deepen student understanding of each subject is a useful tactic in order to achieve the goal of improved mathematics and science academic achievement by American students. The emphasis should be on what the students will be doing to learn these content areas, so that …

Fault Tolerance: Validating A Mathematical Model Via A Case Study Of Raxml, An Hpc Community Code, Bidisha Chakraborty Jan 2012

Fault Tolerance: Validating A Mathematical Model Via A Case Study Of Raxml, An Hpc Community Code, Bidisha Chakraborty

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Researchers have mentioned that the three most difficult and growing problems in the future of high-performance computing will be avoiding, coping and recovering from failures. As the scale of computing increases, the Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) of the entire system decreases and, therefore, system resilience and fault tolerance techniques become mandatory. One of the most commonly used fault tolerance schemes is checkpoint/restart, however, it has been predicted that the current checkpoint/restart approach is not scalable. Thus, current research seeks to find scalable fault tolerance techniques as well as to extend the scalability of checkpoint/restart.

The periodicity of the checkpointing …

Minimizing The Retransmission Delay And Energy Expense Of Arq With The Optimal Placement Of Caching Routers In A Video Communication Network, Jesus Enrique Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The use of intermediary caching routers to service retransmission requests was investigated in this thesis. The main goal is to reduce the expected retransmission delay in a video communication network where the capacity for intermediate caching routers is constrained. In order to reduce the retransmission delay, the effect of the placement of routers with caching ability is investigated. Moreover, as a consequence of reducing the retransmission distance, the energy spent on retransmitting video packets is reduced as well. The average retransmission delay and the average energy consumption were modeled with mathematical programs that select the optimal placement of caching routers …
