All participants completed a 45- item survey. The constructs were measured using the Mehrabian and Russell (1974) pleasure, arousal, and dominance scale; the Zuckerman Kuhlman sensation seeking and impulsivity scale; the Swanson (1978) absorbing experience scale; and an analytical scale developed by …

The results indicate that median wages of highly unionized occupations in the Las Vegas HGR industry are significantly higher than wages of identical occupations in Reno. Little difference in wages is observed in the WRT industries of the two regions. In light of …

Educating For The Gaming Industry: Need, Profile, And Suggested Schema, Leslie E. Cummings

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

As legalized gambling becomes increasingly widespread and competitive, operators seek employees who understand its unique culture and demands. Today, few baccalaureate programs offer gaming management education. Gaming subject areas for college programs span three content spheres: (a) gaming and games themselves; (b) gaming interfaces with other hospitality subjects (lodging, accounting); and (c) the gaming/hospitality environment (regulation, economics). In a given academic program, gaming content integration can be measured along a continuum, from nonexistent, to somewhat integrated within existing courses, to comprising a central educational focus.

An Examination Of University Student Gambling Practices, Michael Yuan, Susan Yuan, Patricia Janes

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Concerns about student gambling behavior are often based on the popular opinion that students gamble all the time, that students spend too much money gambling, and that students readily become addicted to gambling. The purpose of this study was to examine whether popular opinions related to student gambling are factually based. This was done by examining the relationship among demographics, gambling practices, and views of personal gambling practices of Central Michigan University students. The study results suggest that these popular opinions regarding student gambling may not be factual, or at least may not be as serious as initially perceived.

Mentorship Modes: Strategies For Influencing Interactive Learners, Brad Gyori Dec 2012

Mentorship Modes: Strategies For Influencing Interactive Learners, Brad Gyori

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

In the age of the Internet, students are clamoring for immersive and participatory learning experiences, but how can teachers share autonomy without losing control of their classrooms? In an effort to address this important question, this article suggests three mentorship modes that educators can employ in order to effectively engage with today’s interactive learners. Lecture-based instruction is a single mode form of teaching in which information is disseminated by a lone authority-figure. In contrast, learning-centered mentorship is a three-mode process in which autonomy is shared and authority flows in multiple directions at once: bottom-up (modeling), laterally (collaborating), and top-down (organizing …

The Moral Foundations Of Ethical Leadership, Joseph Hester, Don R. Killian Dec 2012

The Moral Foundations Of Ethical Leadership, Joseph Hester, Don R. Killian

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Hester and Killian stress that principled leadership does not necessarily require discarding past practices; rather, they emphasize the importance of using what is good about the past, eliminating self-interest, and injecting passion into contemporary, valuesbased leadership. Passion, as used by the authors in this sense, refers to neither rage nor anger; rather, it is an excitement and enthusiasm that comes from leading with vision, integrity, and respect for others. Subsequently, when such passion is coupled with moral purpose, the idea of serving others, and building and sustaining relationships, the organization will inevitably experience positive growth — one person at a …

Earning The Right To Lead In Defining Moments: The Act Of Taking Leadership, Tom Karp, Jon-Arild Johannessen

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

True leaders emerge and earn their right to lead — not as a result of an organization’s day-to-day activities — but through courageous acts exhibited during the organization’s defining moments, whether such moments be characterized as stable or disastrous. Remaining strong and steadfast in testy situations while demonstrating the ability to bond to earn the trust of others are the predominant emotional and interpersonal characteristics on display when a leader earns his or her right to lead.

Conscious Leadership: Transformational Approaches To A Sustainable Future, John Renesch Dec 2012

Conscious Leadership: Transformational Approaches To A Sustainable Future, John Renesch

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

There is no room for the status quo. Apathy and lack of true leadership will simply perpetuate the unsustainable, self-destructive course we have embarked upon and continue to perpetuate. Renesch passionately calls to end any legitimacy given to dysfunctional systems; to seek long-term approaches necessary to achieve a sustainable future; to terminate polarization in order to seek common ground; and to take corrective measures without fearing failure.

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The test of a good leader is staying in the fight despite the popularity or lack thereof of the issue. Long Thompson reflects that this message is the result of a combination of a good work ethic, a solid supportive group of family and friends, and commonalty of purpose. She opines that voters elect representatives to use good judgment and fully research issues before committing to a particular course of action.

Mitigating Inadequate Security Claims Through Effective Security Measures, Susan H. Ivancevich, Daniel M. Ivancevich

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Gaming and hospitality operators are currently facing a litigation crisis. Recent court decisions, such as Tailhook, have established that hospitality operators are responsible for foreseeable security problems. Because of the increased responsibility placed on gaming and hospitality operators to provide a safe and secure environment for their guests, patrons, and employees, companies must take a proactive stance regarding security. While the surveillance and security programs in place at most gaming establishments are often quite sophisticated, care must still be taken to remain current with technological advances in security and changing industry security standards. The implementation of security measures can help …
