The Rwandan Genocide: Why Early Warning Failed, Gregory H. Stanton Nov 2012

The Rwandan Genocide: Why Early Warning Failed, Gregory H. Stanton

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

Early warnings of the Rwandan genocide were ignored because policy makers perceived it as a "civil war," denied the facts, and decided not to intervene, preventing U.S. and U.N. lawyers from calling the killing "genocide." Early reinforcement of UNAMIR could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives, but "group-think" precluded consideration of direct military intervention by the U.S. and allied forces, though they were near Rwanda and rescued their own nationals. Unwilling to financially and militarily support a reinforced UNAMIR, the U.S., U.K. and U.N., the Security Council ordered UNAMIR to leave Rwanda; because they did not consider Rwandan lives …

The Question Of The Recent Expulsion Of Rwandans From Tanzania, Charles Gasarasi Nov 2012

The Question Of The Recent Expulsion Of Rwandans From Tanzania, Charles Gasarasi

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

From 2000 to 2006, more than 33,000 Rwandan immigrants were expelled from Tanzania. Most of them were expelled without regard to international conventions on rights and duties of countries that host legal or illegal immigrants. Tanzanian authorities accused the expelled persons of illegal settlement and implication in various crimes. The expelled immigrants, on the other hand, deplore acts of injustice, corruption, humiliation and theft of their goods perpetrated against them by Tanzanian local and regional authorities of Kagera Region. A correct diplomacy, facilitated by the Joint Technical Team, set up to resolve the expulsion related problems, has helped to moderate …

The Relationship Of Food And Academic Performance: A Preliminary Examination Of The Factors Of Nutritional Neuroscience, Malnutrition, And Diet Adequacy, Allison Woodhouse, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D. Nov 2012

The Relationship Of Food And Academic Performance: A Preliminary Examination Of The Factors Of Nutritional Neuroscience, Malnutrition, And Diet Adequacy, Allison Woodhouse, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D.

Christian Perspectives in Education

This article examines the extent of food’s impact on children’s academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to summarize existing research concerning the food-learning correlation and to synthesize studies regarding nutritional needs of the brain, malnutrition during development, and overall diet quality as related to academic achievement. Data finds a fundamental link between nutrition and cognition. Results suggest to the extent the brains of many United States schoolchildren do not receive the nutrients needed for optimal cognition, that academic performance may be consequentially reduced. Finally, a discussion of related learning theory and current debate, and practical implications for educational …

Arts And Education: An Investigation Into The Impact Of The Arts Academy On High School Students, Nigel Sangster Nov 2012

Arts And Education: An Investigation Into The Impact Of The Arts Academy On High School Students, Nigel Sangster

Theses and Dissertations

The broad topical area of my research study involved an investigation of the impact of the arts academy on the students of Cooper Ruth Performing and Fine Arts Middle-High School (pseudonym), using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Being a proponent of the arts, one of the premises of my research was to bring about a greater sense of awareness in my school and school district, that the arts were not "frills" in the educational processes of children (Perrin, 1994). Focus was given to various strands of the arts disciplines in my efforts to substantiate the significance of the overarching question …

Methods For Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners, Johannah M. Strohman Nov 2012

Methods For Teaching Hispanic English Language Learners, Johannah M. Strohman

Senior Honors Theses

With the increase of diversity in American schools and the growing importance of English around the world, teaching English as a second language has become an essential aspect to education. It is difficult to have students of different cultural backgrounds in the classroom who are not proficient in English. A teacher cannot expect these students to succeed in an English only classroom setting. It is important that there be specialized teachers to address the needs of these students in order to reach all students where they are and help them accomplish all that they need to in order to succeed. …
