“What Do You Think Of Bleak House?”: Dickens’S Serial Novels And Victorian Literary Fandom, Susan Jane Ballinger Nov 2012

“What Do You Think Of Bleak House?”: Dickens’S Serial Novels And Victorian Literary Fandom, Susan Jane Ballinger

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The objective of this thesis was to explore the many ways in which original readers experienced Victorian serial novels. Because the novels were published in parts over an extended period of time, often more than a year, readers experienced events in the novels in what they perceived as real time. This produced in readers an emotional connection not only between the events and characters of the novels, but between the readers and authors. The intensity of readers’ involvement in these novels is illustrated by the letters they wrote to the authors asking for clues, offering suggestions and criticism, and pleading …

A New Approach To Safety Assessment At Gated Highway–Rail Grade Crossings, Zheng Luo Nov 2012

A New Approach To Safety Assessment At Gated Highway–Rail Grade Crossings, Zheng Luo

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A significant number of pedestrians and bicyclists (i.e., non-motorists) use the roadway system in the U.S. Research pertaining to the safety of them, especially their safety at highway-rail grade crossings (HRGCs), has drawn much attention in the past decade, and remains an important issue of safety research. Yet, the majority of existing research has examined non-motorist safety at intersections or motorist safety at HRGCs separately. Such research has related primarily to exploring relationships between safety countermeasures (e.g., engineering devices, education, enforcement, etc.) and crash frequency/severity, using different quantitative analysis approaches. A primary limitation of these studies is that few have …

There's No Place Like Home: How Residential Attributes Affect Family Functioning, Carly Marie Thornock Nov 2012

There's No Place Like Home: How Residential Attributes Affect Family Functioning, Carly Marie Thornock

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which actual (e.g., density and openness) and perceptual (e.g., crowding and distance) elements of the spatial home environment act as predictors of family functioning. Data were gathered from 126 families whose child was attending a university’s preschool/kindergarten facility in a mid-sized community in the Western United States. Structural equation modeling (SEM, AMOS 19.0) was employed to examine the strength of the relationships within the model. Results showed that though actual home items (specifically density and great room openness) affect family functioning outcomes, perceived crowding was especially influential as a …

Improving Rapid Prototyping Through The Installment Of 3d Printers In Automotive Companies, Kelly Mccarthy Nov 2012

Improving Rapid Prototyping Through The Installment Of 3d Printers In Automotive Companies, Kelly Mccarthy

Honors Theses

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a relatively new form of additive manufacturing that has the potential to induce a second industrial revolution. This technology utilizes a print head to lay down raw materials in successive layers to fabricate a three dimensional object. There are several techniques in 3D printing, two of which will be discussed hi this proposal: fused deposition modeling (FDM), and inkjet/polyjet matrix 3D printing.

Although this technology has been around since the 1980s, it is constantly evolving and new materials, uses, and objects are created daily. This technology presents the potential to manufacture a variety of objects across …

3d Double Difference Velocity Tomography Of The Middle America Subduction Zone Beneath Nicaragua And Costa Rica, Melissa M. Driskell Nov 2012

3d Double Difference Velocity Tomography Of The Middle America Subduction Zone Beneath Nicaragua And Costa Rica, Melissa M. Driskell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Waveform and arrival onset data collected on five amphibious arrays deployed along the Costa Rica-Nicaragua portion of the Middle America subduction zone are integrated to conduct high resolution velocity and location studies. Pick quality is evaluated using an automated arrival detection algorithm based on the wavelet transform and Akaike information criterion, resulting in revised pick weights for inversion studies. I explore the effect of new weighting and removal of poor data by relocating hypocenters through a minimum one dimensional velocity model and conducting double-difference local earthquake tomography (LET). Analysis of the hypocenter relocation and seismic velocity tomography results suggest that …

Using Computer Assisted Tomography To Acquire More Detailed Subject Specific Information For Kinematic Analysis, Devin J. Conner Nov 2012

Using Computer Assisted Tomography To Acquire More Detailed Subject Specific Information For Kinematic Analysis, Devin J. Conner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Experimental knee simulators have been used to study knee kinematics of total knee replacements (TKR) in cadaver knees. Kinematic results are often reported using a Joint Coordinate System (JCS) introduced by Grood & Suntay in 1983. The JCS relies on bone landmarks in the knee which are removed when a TKR is performed. While it may be expedient to use the closest equivalents of the landmarks from the TKR to build the JCS (rather than the actual anatomic landmarks) doing so may introduce errors that could lead to misinterpretation of the kinematic results. Cadaver studies were performed on two posterior …

The Relationship Of Campanian Paleoseismites In The Eagle Formation To Initial Laramide Deformation Of The Elk Basin Anticline, Wyoming And Montana, William Thomas Jackson Jr. Nov 2012

The Relationship Of Campanian Paleoseismites In The Eagle Formation To Initial Laramide Deformation Of The Elk Basin Anticline, Wyoming And Montana, William Thomas Jackson Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Paleoseismites occur throughout the Campanian package exposed in the Elk Basin anticline. Within marine units convolute-bedding typically involves single sandstone beds with vertical to overturned strata on either side of a near-vertical vent, whereas the non-marine Eagle Formation contains planar clastic dikes derived from liquefied sand-source beds. Liquefied sand was injected upward and laterally across mudstone and/or coal along pre-existing planar, near-vertical, near-surface joints. Orientations of 145 sandstone-dikes were compared with 61 previously reported Laramide joint-orientations. Although dike- and joint-trends are similar, dikes preferentially fill cross-joints whereas strike-joints are the dominant later Laramide joint-set. Dike orientations are consistent with their …

The judge's work in child abuse and neglect cases is among the most challenging of any judicial proceeding. The complexities are substantial. Such cases depend upon the exercise of discretion and good judgment together with the application of sound legal principles. The judge must call upon his or her most cherished skills—objectivity, wisdom, patience, and foresight—in circumstances of acute stress. Lives are literally at stake—the lives of the most vulnerable children and youth in our communities and the lives of families wracked by generations of poverty and despair. Families, children, and youth who have experienced intense trauma; who may be …

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

We sequenced and compared the genomes of the Dothideomycete fungal plant pathogensCladosporium fulvum (Cfu) (syn. Passalora fulva) and Dothistroma septosporum (Dse) that are closely related phylogenetically, but have different lifestyles and hosts. Although both fungi grow extracellularly in close contact with host mesophyll cells, Cfu is a biotroph infecting tomato, while Dse is a hemibiotroph infecting pine. The genomes of these fungi have a similar set of genes (70% of gene content in both genomes are homologs), but differ significantly in size (Cfu >61.1-Mb; Dse 31.2-Mb), which is mainly due to the difference in repeat content (47.2% …
