The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright Nov 2012

The Forensic Burke: A For(U)Mative Member Of The Parlor, Courtney James Wright

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I detail the forensics education of Kenneth Burke, a leading rhetorical theorist and critic of the twentieth century. After investigating this previously unexamined area, I argue that Burke’s competitive forensics experiences pivotally informed his rhetorical schema. Theoretically guided by Burke’s pivotal term the forensic, I begin by mapping the contours of Burke’s educational biography. Next, I analyze and reconstruct Burke’s forensics education by focusing on the forensic organizations of Peabody High School, Burke’s literary society experiences at Ohio State University and Columbia University, and the literary activities of Greenwich Village. Finally, I proffer connections between forensics …

Modular Joystick Design For Virtual Reality Surgical Skills Training, Michael Head Nov 2012

Modular Joystick Design For Virtual Reality Surgical Skills Training, Michael Head

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A modular control interface and simulated virtual reality environment was designed and created in order to determine how the kinematic architecture of a control interface affects minimally invasive surgery. A user is able to selectively determine how many, the type, and location of degrees of freedom they require for the specific surgical simulation through the use of modular joints and constraint components. Furthermore, passive locking was designed and implemented through the use of inflated latex tubing around rotational degree of freedom joints. It is believed these features will have the ability to effectively simulate a variety of surgical simulations and …

Predicting Vehicle Dynamics For Roadside Safety Using Multibody Systems Simulations, Brett D. Schlueter Nov 2012

Predicting Vehicle Dynamics For Roadside Safety Using Multibody Systems Simulations, Brett D. Schlueter

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Accurate means for predicting vehicle dynamics is required in the design and testing of roadside safety hardware. Past research has used finite element (FE) modeling to this end, but multibody systems (MBS) modeling may provide a more efficient way to solve these problems. MBS modeling using Adams/Car was investigated by first compiling an introduction to the program, then performing basic vehicle dynamics simulations using a supplied model. Next, a model of a 2270 kg pickup was created and validated against physical test data involving impact with a speed bump. Finally, pickup trajectories in 4H:1V and 6H:1V V-ditches were predicted for …

Artist/Teacher: Toward A More Creative Curriculum, Matthew L. Auch Moedy

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

This thesis investigates the formation of my teaching identity. It seeks language for why I orient my teaching toward artistic thinking in my preparation and content. Features of artistic thinking discussed include students have personal interests, teachers need to expose and build on what students bring to class, artistic thinking is not linear and creativity invites the unexpected, play and creativity require both time and space and are best accomplished through situated freedom, process ought not be separated from product, making process visible and valuing process will make a positive difference in a student’s future. Vignettes from my teaching experiences …

Publications and Research

Background The recent H1N1 influenza A pandemic was marked by multiple reports of illness and hospitalization in children, suggesting that children may have played a major role in the propagation of the virus. A comprehensive detailed analysis of the attack rates among children as compared with their contacts in various settings is of great importance for understanding their unique role in influenza pandemics. Methodology/Principal Findings We searched MEDLINE (PubMed) and Embase for published studies reporting outbreak investigations with direct measurements of attack rates of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza A among children, and quantified how these compare with those of …

An Examination Of The Principals And Teachers Relative To Elements Of Shared Decision Making In Selected Urban, Suburban, And Rural Schools, Andrea M. Foxx Nov 2012

An Examination Of The Principals And Teachers Relative To Elements Of Shared Decision Making In Selected Urban, Suburban, And Rural Schools, Andrea M. Foxx

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Schools nationwide are experimenting with methods that promise to better educate students and improve schools performance. The educational structure in the United States has been moving from primarily centralized systems to more decentralized ones. Shared decision making is designed to improve education by increasing the autonomy of the school staff to make school site decisions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual and desired levels of shared decision making as perceived by teachers in public elementary schools in West Tennessee. In this study two research questions were posed: (1) How do teachers and principals rank the educational …

Predictors Of Wait-Time For Antibiotic Initiation And Its Association With Length Of Hospital Stay And Icu-Admission Among Children With Cancer At The Southern Philippine Medical Center, Jeannette Enk Kirby Nov 2012

Predictors Of Wait-Time For Antibiotic Initiation And Its Association With Length Of Hospital Stay And Icu-Admission Among Children With Cancer At The Southern Philippine Medical Center, Jeannette Enk Kirby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A window of one hour or less from start of signs and symptoms of infection to antibiotic administration (AWT) is considered good clinical practice in developed countries, but less feasible in resource poor countries. This study aimed to identify predictors of AWT and studied its association with hospital length of stay (LOS) and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. A survey of healthcare providers assessed quality of care associated with the institutional capacity and response. AWT averaged four days with patient status being the only predictor upon multivariate analysis. For predictors associated with outcomes, parental education and patient status were associated …

When Worldviews Collide: What Linguistic Style Matching And Distal Language Reveal About Deception In Political Discourse, Lucille Marie Booker Nov 2012

When Worldviews Collide: What Linguistic Style Matching And Distal Language Reveal About Deception In Political Discourse, Lucille Marie Booker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Political discourse is an observable, measurable, and testable manifestation of political worldviews. However, when worldviews collide, notions of truth and of lies are put to the test. The challenge for researchers is how to establish confidence in their analysis. Despite the growing interest in deception research from a diversity of fields and industries, the trend is to focus on validating the assessment approach to the data without considering validity issues related to the data itself. Such a trend is concerned more with how to assess linguistic features and less with what is being assessed. By contrast, this dissertation is concerned …
