Effets Du Sida Sur La Côte D'Ivoire Et Stratégies Culturellement Pertinentes Pour En Prévenir La Propagation, Austin Lawry
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
Côte D’Ivoire remains a vital case in the fight against AIDS proliferation due to its status as one of the most centralized and influential state in West Africa. This paper analyzes the unique case that Côte D’Ivoire presents socially, economically and politically and how an effective and comprehensive prevention program must incorporate these three dimensions. Particular attention is given to the impact of recent cultural shifts in understanding HIV/AIDS, the Migrant Labor Thesis, the costs of the disease, and the role of war. Finally, through integrating these unique dimensions with the problems reported by existing AIDS prevention programs, several solutions …

Thermalization And Initial State-Recurrence In Discrete Kdv-Like Lattices, Garrett Taylor Nieddu
Thermalization And Initial State-Recurrence In Discrete Kdv-Like Lattices, Garrett Taylor Nieddu
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Three discretizations of the Korteweg de-Vries equation are studied; convergence rate, initial state-recurrence, and the energy distribution of the three schemes are all considered. For each discrete scheme over 300 lattices with varying grid sizes were investigated, and the solutions were compared with other lattices from the same scheme, as well as solutions from the other two. It is found that the two schemes that are least accurate display the best recurrence at intermediate grid sizes, away from convergence. This is a notable result because the best recurrence is expected to be found in the most accurate, and converged lattices. …
Monitored Disclosure: A Way To Avoid Legislative Supremacy In Redistricting Litigation, Mark Tyson
Monitored Disclosure: A Way To Avoid Legislative Supremacy In Redistricting Litigation, Mark Tyson
Washington Law Review
The Speech or Debate Clause of the U.S. Constitution protects members of Congress from testifying about “legislative acts” or having “legislative acts” used against them as evidence. U.S. Supreme Court decisions delineating the scope of what constitutes a “legislative act” have an episodic feel and have failed to create a readily applicable test for new factual scenarios. One such scenario occurs when members of Congress communicate with state legislators regarding congressional redistricting. Courts must know how to handle instances where members of Congress assert legislative privilege in the redistricting context, and specifically when members of Congress assert the privilege in …

A Millenial Little Pieces: Selected Writings From A Gen-Y, Lauren Elizabeth Valentine Servideo
Journalism Program
This is an anthology of my favorite pieces written during my time at SUNY Albany. The subject matter of each piece differs wildly from the next, but they do share one thing in common, and that is my focus on character and cultural studies. Exploring and dissecting the works of Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, Martha Gellhorn, and various other literary journalists throughout my undergraduate career has inspired the style of all the creative non-fiction included in A Millenial Little Pieces: Selected Writings from a Gen-Y.

Interactive Marketing Strategies In Television Networks: Incorporating Satellite Media Tours In Twitter, Kathleen Maloney
Interactive Marketing Strategies In Television Networks: Incorporating Satellite Media Tours In Twitter, Kathleen Maloney
Journalism
The following study investigates how to design and implement an effective interactive marketing strategy for the television industry. The study also explores how satellite media tours and social media, specifically Twitter, can be used together in an interactive marketing plan. As new technology is continuously being developed and target audiences are increasingly demanding instantaneous interactive content, it is pertinent to understand how to successfully use these tools in a marketing plan to engage audiences. According to Nick Abramovich, the Chief Executive Officer of Synaptic Digital, a multichannel digital media creation and distribution platform (Inc Magazine, 2011), “brands are realizing that …

The Reviresco Rainbow Interactive Theatre Model: A Study Combining Theatre Of The Oppressed And Theatre In Education For The Development Of A New Model For Social Literacy, Dustin M. Carlson
Master's Theses
The Reviresco Rainbow Interactive Theatre Model reflects an intense quest into the use of theatre and dramatic role play for the enhancement of social education. Apathy is a common problem in today’s learning environment due to the overwhelming pressure of academia and the ignorance of social literacy. The Reviresco Rainbow Interactive Theatre Model gives students, educators, and the community creative avenues to address the current learning climate in schools, and tools to instill the value of theatre arts in education. The model includes the study, analysis, and combination of Theatre of the Oppressed and Theatre in Education practices to form …
Evidence-Based Policy For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In The Institutionalized Elderly, Anna Rachel Olson
Evidence-Based Policy For Asymptomatic Bacteriuria In The Institutionalized Elderly, Anna Rachel Olson
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
The practice of mistaking asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) for urinary tract infections (UTI) is widespread in nursing homes and is contributing to patient overtreatment and adverse side effects such as clostridium difficile and multi-drug resistant microorganisms. The purpose of this DNP capstone project was to (a) write evidence-based policy and procedures (P&Ps) for evaluating institutionalized elders with clinical status changes when UTI was suspected, (b) utilize nursing leadership teams (NLT) in four northern Colorado nursing homes to implement evidence-based practice (EBP), and (c) evaluate implementation methods for their success in changing practice. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, Plsek’s philosophy of adopting innovation in …

False Smut Of Rice: Histological Analysis Of Infection, Liem Thi Thanh Nguyen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
False smut of rice, caused by Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takahashi (Teleomorph: Villosiclava virens), has become a common disease in most major rice growing regions throughout the world. Considerable confusion exists regarding the infection process and the disease cycle. Therefore, a clearer understanding of pathogenesis caused by Ustilaginoidea virens is critical for future efforts to develop genetic and chemical tools to manage false smut in Arkansas and other regions of the world. The overall goal of this research was to clarify the infection process underlying false smut, with emphasis on comparing and contrasting the histological basis of root and foliar infections. …
Comparing The Effects Of Simulated, Intelligent Audible, Checklists And Analog Checklists In Simulated Flight, Bryan Hilton
Comparing The Effects Of Simulated, Intelligent Audible, Checklists And Analog Checklists In Simulated Flight, Bryan Hilton
Dissertations
This study examined the effect of using a simulated intelligent audible checklist in simulated flight as compared to a standard analog (paper) checklist. Participants were three Western Michigan University students in the College of Aviation. All participants were licensed pilots with instrument ratings. The main dependent variable was the number of checklist errors or omissions committed by the pilots in simulated flight. During each flight, each participant could make up to 42 errors. The error count would initiate at the appropriate time to perform the “before-take off checklist” and would end one minute after parking the plane, the logical time …

Funding Health-Related Vr Services: The Potential Impact Of The Affordable Care Act On The Use Of Private Health Insurance And Medicaid To Pay For Health-Related Vr Services, Robert Silverstein
All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications
One of the myriad of issues affecting the administration of the vocational rehabilitation (VR) program by State VR agencies under Title I of the Rehabilitation Act is how to maximize access to and use of all available funding sources to pay for VR services and supports for VR applicants and clients. In March 2010, Congress passed and the President signed into law the "Affordable Care Act" (ACA). 1 On June 28, 2012, the United States Supreme Court upheld all of the provisions of the ACA, with the exception of provisions mandating Medicaid expansion. The Supreme Court held that if a …

“A Key Area Of Knowledge Delivered By Someone Knowledgeable”: Feminist Expectations And Explorations Of A One-Off Economics Lecture On Gender, Emily Henderson
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper explores the action of attending a visiting academic’s one-off lecture, whether in the lecture theatre or on the Internet, in order to gain knowledge from a recognised expert of an unfamiliar but relevant field of research. The actions of entering the theatre and sitting for an hour, or of clicking “play,” appear to be simple gestures for the acquisition of knowledge; this paper explores the complexity of the processes surrounding the lecture, and the way in which the lecture constructs a passive listening position for the audience. The exploration takes place in the frame of one such lecture: …
An Exploration Of African American Male Community College Students' Experiences Concerning Their Successful Postsecondary Enrollment, Robin Dabney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite increased numbers of African American male students in higher education, their academic achievement levels continue to be at disproportionate numbers compared to other ethnic groups and genders (U.S. Census Bureau, 2005). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore lived experiences of African American male community college students concerning factors hindering their academic progress and to understand perceptions of factors that influence their academic achievement in higher education. The current study identifies pertinent factors that will assist African American males to become successful in their postsecondary experiences. Findings from this study provide insights into predictors that may lead …
A Phenomenology Of Academic Support In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Homes Of At-Risk Students, David Barber
A Phenomenology Of Academic Support In Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Homes Of At-Risk Students, David Barber
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
I examined the home environment and the amount of academic support non-English speaking parents are able to provide for their English Language Learner (ELL) children in the United States school system. In particular, the focus is on the families of children who struggle academically in the state of Georgia, where non-English speaking children are mainstreamed into regular education classrooms with limited support. Although there has been a great deal of research on how ELLs learn and what type of program can be used to best facilitate mastery of academics as they are learning the English language, the focal point of …

Eliciting Usable Gestures For Multi-Display Environments, Teddy Seyed, Chris Burns, Mario Costa Sousa, Frank Maurer, Anthony Tang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Multi-display environments (MDEs) have advanced rapidly in recent years, incorporating multi-touch tabletops, tablets, wall displays and even position tracking systems. Designers have proposed a variety of interesting gestures for use in an MDE, some of which involve a user moving their hands, arms, body or even a device itself. These gestures are often used as part of interactions to move data between the various components of an MDE, which is a longstanding research problem. But designers, not users, have created most of these gestures and concerns over implementation issues such as recognition may have influenced their design. We performed a …
