Moving Toward The User-Centered Library: Learning Behaviors And Their Impact On Library Planning, Leah M. Dunn
Moving Toward The User-Centered Library: Learning Behaviors And Their Impact On Library Planning, Leah M. Dunn
Charleston Library Conference
Hege Library at Guilford College has been engaged in a set of planning activities funded by an LSTA grant from the State Library of North Carolina. Through these planning activities, the library hired a consultant to administer a learning behaviors survey to help align library services with the College’s upcoming Strategic Long Range Plan for 2011-2015.
This presentation will discuss how the library administered a “Learning Behaviors Survey” for Guilford College with the goal of better understanding the existing learning geography of its campus and the place of the library in that geography. The Learning Behaviors Survey looked at 12 …

Supporting Effective Communication And Workflows In Social Science Research: Findings And Summary Of A Group Discussion, Bernie Folan
Charleston Library Conference
At the end of 2010, at an event hosted by SAGE and facilitated by the Research Information Network, a group of academic librarians and doctoral researchers came together to discuss the provision of information services for researchers in the social sciences. The event was designed to both explore ways of improving the provision and consumption of information during the research process and to discuss how the value of the content that researchers and librarians choose and supply could be demonstrated. This article summarizes some of the key findings from the event and encourages further discussion with an aim to finding …

General Method To Unravel Ancient Population Structures Through Surnames, Final Validation On Italian Data, Alessio Boattini, Antonella Lisa, Ornella Fiorani, Gianna Zei, Davide Pettener, Franz Manni
Human Biology
We analyze the geographic location of 77,451 different Italian surnames (17,579,891 individuals) obtained from the lists of telephone subscribers of the year 1993.
By using a specific neural network analysis (Self-Organizing Maps, SOMs), we automatically identify the geographic origin of 49,117 different surnames. To validate the methodology, we compare the results to a study, previously conducted, on the same database, with accurate supervised methods. By comparing the results, we find an overlap of 97%, meaning that the SOMs methodology is highly reliable and well traces back the geographic origin of surnames at the time of their introduction (Late Middle Ages/Renaissance …

Speaking Of Rivers: Demystifying Foreign-Born Blacks Through A Secondary Esl Context, C. D. Williams
Speaking Of Rivers: Demystifying Foreign-Born Blacks Through A Secondary Esl Context, C. D. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Linguistic imperialism and societal assumptions can become dominant issues that lessen the significance of the identity, language, culture, and communication of minorities in English as a second language (ESL) settings, which may hinder the possibilities of acceptance and success (Amin, 1997; Ibrahim, 1999; Morgan, 1997; Ogbu, 1992a). Students from Africa and West Indies, foreign-born Blacks, represent English language learners (ELLs) who have distinct cultural and linguistic mores that often go unnoticed. Foreign-born Blacks possess uncommon mother tongues and cultural behaviors that present struggles with salient entrenched racialization in ESL because the historical aspects of English are associated with Whiteness, dominance, …

Transfer Seminars: The Impact On Transfer Student Collegiate Adjustment, Amanda Farina
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study was to investigate the impact transfer seminars at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey had on transfer students' adjustment to college. The study explored the college goals/outcomes, and study strategies students used both before and after taking the transfer seminar. This study utilized archival data from 328 surveys collected since 2003. Students were administered a survey at the beginning of the transfer seminar course and then again at the end of the semester. Results from the data analysis showed some statistically significant changes from pre to post survey. Most notably, students were concerned about …

Choosing The Best Plant For The Job: A Cost-Effective Assay To Prescreen Ancient Plant Remains Destined For Shotgun Sequencing, Nathan Wales, J. Alberto Romero-Navarro, Enrico Cappellini, M. Thomas P. Gilbert
Anthropology Articles
DNA extracted from ancient plant remains almost always contains a mixture of endogenous (that is, derived from the plant) and exogenous (derived from other sources) DNA. The exogenous ‘contaminant’ DNA, chiefly derived from microorganisms, presents significant problems for shotgun sequencing. In some samples, more than 90% of the recovered sequences are exogenous, providing limited data relevant to the sample. However, other samples have far less contamination and subsequently yield much more useful data via shotgun sequencing. Given the investment required for high-throughput sequencing, whenever multiple samples are available, it is most economical to sequence the least contaminated sample. We present …
Embracing The Opposition: Normative Culture And Candid Communication At The Buffalo Mountain School, Christian Mccrory
Embracing The Opposition: Normative Culture And Candid Communication At The Buffalo Mountain School, Christian Mccrory
MA TESOL Collection
This paper examines the relationship between two approaches to disruptive behavior used at the Buffalo Mountain School, where the author works as a Special Education Provider for behaviorally and developmentally challenged students. These are the Normative Approach, established by the Northeastern Family Institute, and the Candid Approach, which is defined by the author based on his observations of practitioners at Buffalo Mountain. Each of these are used in an alternative school setting to redirect anti-social or disruptive behavior. The purpose of this paper is to determine the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches along with the parameters of their efficacy. …
