Time And Meaning: The Use Of The Fishing And Fowling Scene Through Time In Ancient Egyptian Non-Royal Tombs, Elissa J. Ferguson
Time And Meaning: The Use Of The Fishing And Fowling Scene Through Time In Ancient Egyptian Non-Royal Tombs, Elissa J. Ferguson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis is an introductory investigation into the iconographic and compositional developments of the fishing and fowling scene in Egyptian private tomb through the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. Scenes are selected from a corpus created by the author and examined to understand how the scene is used in each period and what visual elements are included or omitted. The information gathered here is synthesized to establish trends in development and used to test existing theories on the meaning and purpose of the fishing and fowling scene in private tomb decoration. The results reveal an evolving meaning, originating in the …

Saints, "Savages," And Smallpox: Epidemic Disease And The Colonization Of New England, 1616-1637, Steven Charles Buckingham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis argues that native epidemics of European infections were crucial to the English colonization of New England. In the early seventeenth century, this region was densely populated with natives who were happy to trade with Europeans but prevented them from establishing permanent settlements there. But in 1616, an epidemic, probably of smallpox, killed thousands of natives along the New England coast, creating conditions that helped ensure the survival of the Pilgrims' settlement at Plymouth and facilitating subsequent English expansion in New England. Then in 1633, in the midst of the Puritan "Great Migration," another smallpox outbreak caused extensive native …

The Social, Economic, And Political Connotations Of The Tomb Of Huy (Theban Tomb 40) For Foreign Relations With Ancient Nubia In The 18th Dynasty, Grace Marie Lahneman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis examines the tomb of Huy, the viceroy of Nubia under the reign of the 18th Dynasty king, Tutankhamen (ca. 1333-1323 BCE). An analysis of the tomb narrative in the tomb of Huy at Thebes reveals, and highlights, how the viceroy Huy perceived the world as an elite Egyptian. Two scenes in particular are analyzed with scrutiny: the Nubian tribute scene on the west wall and the viceregal state vessel scene on the east wall. A comparison of the iconographic significance of these two scenes with the archaeological evidence from the Egyptian Nubian frontier area reveals how his tomb …

This poster explains what the Illinois State University Campus Crusade for Christ (ISU Cru) members stand for in their spiritual journey to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Through the use of visual ethnographic methods (interviewing with photographs and participant-observation) to facilitate conversation and collaboration with active male and female leaders of Cru, a general consensus was reached about the main goals and beliefs of this growing evangelical Christian movement. The research illustrates the importance of a group trying to live together and grow in their relationship with Christ through evangelism and discipleship.

Alternative Individual Cartridge Case Identification Techniques, Curtis H. Sedlacek
Alternative Individual Cartridge Case Identification Techniques, Curtis H. Sedlacek
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Individual cartridge case identification is an essential component of historic battlefield archeology. With individual cartridge case identification archeologists are able to track the movement of the combatants as they move across the battlefield, giving a highly detailed view of the past. While useful, current methods of individual cartridge case identification require expensive equipment and extensive training and time to conduct. In this thesis two alternative methods of cartridge case identification are evaluated in order to determine if recent developments in the areas of 3D scanning and statistical analysis can be utilized to develop new methods of individual cartridge case method. …

This paper describes a household survey of Inuit in northern Alaska and how the survey data were used to better understand the relative importance of jobs, wild food harvesting, and social ties for life satisfaction. It emphasizes the importance of non-material measures for life satisfaction. It builds on other research showing the importance of harvesting wild food and the persistence of a mixed economy—one that combines cash income and wild food harvests. An empirical model estimates the relationship between people's choices to work, and/or hunt and fish, and individual satisfaction with life. The model includes economic and non-economic measures of …

School Culture: A Sequential Mixed Methods Exploratory Meta-Analysis, Cynthia Pritchett
School Culture: A Sequential Mixed Methods Exploratory Meta-Analysis, Cynthia Pritchett
Theses and Dissertations
This multi-national study used systematic review as a data collection technique to determine the current field of empirical studies that posit a definition of school culture and its characteristics. The data gathered from a qualitative synthesis and analysis of the acquired studies informed school culture taxonomy. The taxonomy presented domains, classes, categories, characteristics, and elements, which became the variables for meta-analysis. This adapted methodological process resulted in a valid and generalizable definition of school culture. The adapted sequential mixed methods exploratory approach used in this study resulted in the generation of grounded theory. The grounded theory is a definition of …

The Sociology Of Harriet Martineau In Eastern Life, Present And Past: The Foundations Of The Islamic Sociology Of Religion, Deborah A. Ruigh
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This paper is a critical analysis of Harriet Martineau’s philosophical stance and epistemological modes, her systematic sociological methodology, her use of this methodology, and her sociology of religion. How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838), Eastern Life, Present and Past (1848), and other relevant works will be used to examine Martineau’s evolving epistemological modes as well as her sociology of religion. How to Observe, Martineau’s treatise on systematic sociological methodology and cultural relativism, will serve as an exemplar for analysis of Martineau’s methodological practice as evidenced in Eastern Life. The research problem herein is three-fold: (1) to examine …
